How About Changing the World?<br />

Every February, the Guatemala<br />

Stove Project (GSP), a registered<br />

Canadian charity, brings a group<br />

of volunteers to the western<br />

highlands of Guatemala as part<br />

of its work to improve the lives of<br />

the poorest of the poor by building<br />

safe, efficient masonry cook<br />

stoves.<br />

The travelling conditions are<br />

not glamorous — you’ll work<br />

hard and live simply — but you<br />

will change the lives of several<br />

poor families by improving their<br />

health, their economic situation<br />

and their local environment.<br />

You will be the one to truly gain<br />

from this experience, as you will<br />

be given a rare opportunity for a<br />

person from the first world: the<br />

opportunity to see, touch and<br />

make a difference in the life of<br />

people in the developing world.<br />

You will have the unique opportunity<br />

to visit the homes of Mayan<br />

families and experience daily<br />

life in rural Guatemala.<br />

After the stove building sessions,<br />

there are possibilities to<br />

further explore the culture and<br />

beauty of Guatemala and to forge<br />

new friendships with other volunteers.<br />

What is the Guatemala<br />

Stove Project?<br />

Three billion people on our planet<br />

cook over open fires, and indoor<br />

air pollution from cooking<br />

fires is a major cause of illness and<br />

death in the developing world. In<br />

Guatemala, Mayan families traditionally<br />

cook over a “3-stone<br />

fire”. These open cooking fires fill<br />

the homes with smoke and ash,<br />

coating the interior walls and<br />

ceilings with creosote. They burn<br />

wood inefficiently, which leads to<br />

local deforestation as these poor<br />

subsistence farmers seek fuel<br />

for cooking their meagre meals.<br />

Over the past sixteen years,<br />

working with partner organizations<br />

in Guatemala, the GSP has<br />

funded and built over 5000 improved<br />

masonry cook stoves in<br />

the western highlands.<br />

These stoves are efficient and<br />

burn more cleanly, and their<br />

chimneys take the smoke and<br />

soot outside the home. This<br />

greatly improves the living conditions<br />

of all in the household,<br />

especially the children and women.<br />

More efficient burning means<br />

the family needs less fuel, and<br />

can use those resources for other<br />

pressing needs. This also means<br />

reduced deforestation of the hillsides,<br />

benefitting the environment<br />

in many ways.<br />

The GSP is a group of volunteers<br />

who will be doing something<br />

interesting and meaningful<br />

this winter. If you are interested<br />

Fundraising Dance on<br />

November 14<br />

The GSP will be holding their Fall<br />

Fundraiser on Saturday, November<br />

14. Featuring a silent and live<br />

auction and music by Dave Balfour<br />

with No Principles, this is a<br />

perfect opportunity to learn more<br />

about the organization while having<br />

a great time!<br />

The event will take place at the<br />

Perth Civitan Hall, 6787 Hwy 43.<br />

Doors open at 7pm, and tickets<br />

are $20 ($15 for students) from<br />

Coutts & Company or Shadowfax,<br />

or at the door.<br />
