After consultation with the pastor of
the church they attended, he referred
them to a professional therapist who
was also part of the congregation.
Everything seemed to be going great.
The therapist had the same ethical
and spiritual values they had, was part
of the same community of faith and
exercised the ministry of counseling
in a office that was close, all for free.
Without wasting time decided to
make an appointment and begin
counseling as soon as possible, the
therapist could not have been more
friendly. He explained in great detail
to them that the first thing the had
to learn as a couple was to identify
what was really important to both
of them, once these variables where
determined; what followed was to see
how things had replaced those ideals.
After scheduling the first appointment,
he gave them a reminder, he asked
them to bring their checkbook,
along with their most recent bank
statement , it seemed a little strange,
but before hanging up the phone
he gave them the same reminder.
The husband asked him if there had
been a misunderstanding, as far as
they knew the consultations would
be free. The therapist told them that
there was no error, the reason for
wanting to see their bank statements
and copies of their paid checks was
to see where the time and money
had been spent, to determine what
was truly important to them and to
to see what they valued the most.
The reality of this couple is the same
reality for each and every one of
us. Beyond what we secure, what
is important in our life is what we
spend our resources and time on,
this being the time devoted to school
or work, money we spend on buy
electronic devices or entertaiment,
our attention and effort we spend with
people we hold dear to our hearts or
what we spend watching or listening
to, is what we invest our capital that
we truly consider valuable to us.
If you are like the couple in the
story you also wonder why things
are not going as well as they should,
do a count and see where you are
spending your valuable resources
and will clearly realize what really is
important to you. Nothing like a self
exam to reveal what was is hidden and
what lives within us. Many of these
trends come to us in a very subtle way
and can be difficult to detect, so if
necessary seek help from a friend that
can be honest and write down all the
tendencies he/she notices on yourself.
