SEE & HEAR: FAYETTEVILLE
COURTESY OF THE ARTISTS
Dig the sound
Downtown Fayetteville and Dickson
Street hold the keys to entertaining eves
By Joe Mack
Things in downtown Fayetteville and its adjoining
cosmic corridor of Dickson Street are seemingly
in a state of flux, and we’re not just talking about a
change in the weather.
“Things around here ain’t like they used to be,”
the late, great Bruce Walker of Flying Possum
Leather told me way back in 2008 when I was doing
an interview for another snazzy alt-monthly.
Walker’s former Dickson Street storefront is one
of many structures that’ve been through the mill as
more restaurants and boutiques move in.
Luckily, contrary to the lines uttered by another
giant who’s surrendered to the ether – Tom
Skinner – there are still places to go dancing in this
town; you know, if you’re the dancing type.
Ryleigh’s on Dickson, located at 313 W. Dickson,
keeps the high-energy music coming on select
weekend dates. This month get your body and mind
moving to The Magic Beans on Nov. 7, new-soul
sensation Branjae and her hypnotic band on Nov.
14, and a co-billing of Crazy Neighbor and the
cleverly concocted Fuggins Wheat Band on Nov.
28. Learn more at www.ryleighsondickson.com.
Ye old Smoke & Barrel at 324 W. Dickson are
indeed purveyors of fine whiskey and facilitators of
funk, jazz, improv and songwriter savvy shindigs.
Here you can enjoy performances by the likes of
local funk heroes Mudhawk on Nov. 6, raucous reggae
unit Hypnotion on Nov. 13 and the outlandish,
guitar-led MSG (featuring guit-pirate extraordinaire
Matt Smith) on Nov. 21. Get show times and
go times at www.smokeandbarrel.com.
More great live music can be found often at the
Dickson Street Pub, located at 303 W. Dickson,
where the focus is more on acoustic-based singer/
songwriter solo and duo acts on Thursday, Friday
and Saturday evenings beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Visit www.dicksonstreetpub.com for a continually
updated music menu. Similarly, visit www.
The Magic Beans sprout up at Ryleigh’s on Nov. 7.
commongroundsar.com for special shows getting
brewed up at The Common Grounds, located at
412 W. Dickson, on select Sundays.
Turning our attention even further uphill and
towards the Square, music fills the air beginning
at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday morning at Fayetteville
Underground’s Family Music Tuesdays,
where youngsters get to wrap their heads and hands
around harmony, then take it home! Fayetteville
Underground, which is housed at 101 W. Mountain
Street, also hosts Shirkey’s Pickin’ Post Presents
at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20. For a complete class list
and details visit www.new.fayettevilleunderground.
com.
Finally, when JR’s Lightbulb Club has a show
– be there. Don’t ask questions. Buy the ticket, take
the ride, thank your friends at NWA Mag later (hint:
post-punk unit Nervous Curtains are performing
on Nov. 21, and they have blue vinyl – do you have
blue vinyl?!).
Things ain’t what they used to be, and that’s okay,
because it’s obvious there are still things. We miss
our friends dearly, but perhaps there’s a few we
haven’t met yet waiting at one of these ‘digs?
