Like a rocket Meteor Guitar Gallery continues to burn brightly in downtown Bentonville By Laurie Marshall Almost 90 years ago, The Meteor Theater opened just off the square in downtown Bentonville. Its Barton Silver-Toned pipe organ was in place and posh guests attended opening night to view the first silent picture ever shown in Benton County. The refurbished pipe organ is now installed at the Presbyterian Church of Bentonville, but as an entertainment venue The Meteor is still appealing to folks who love spending an evening on the town on Central Avenue. When owner Leslie Key’s sons started asking about taking guitar lessons, his wife encouraged him to enroll along with them. He is left-handed, and always had trouble finding a guitar that worked for him, but wanted to learn. He was persuaded, and his passion for guitars was born. Unlike most newcomers to a hobby, Key didn’t take baby steps – instead, he started buying guitars and taught himself to restore them. Through his work, and contacts made as a buyer and seller of guitars, he made many contacts in the music business, which led him to a windfall opportunity when Dave Crocker, a musician and promoter in Missouri, offered to sell him the entire inventory of his own guitar shop. Crocker was also one of the folks who encouraged Key’s interest in opening a music venue and gallery in Northwest Arkansas, and The Meteor Guitar Gallery has been rocking and rolling in downtown Bentonville since June 2014. Since opening, the place has transitioned from being an art gallery and instrument store into a legitimate music venue, museum, and even a radio station that will begin broadcasting early next year on 103.3-FM KOBV. Open Mic nights are held on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m., and they host a youth fellowship night every Sunday. Key says they will also present live improv comedy shows beginning in January, so keep an eye out for that on their schedule.
