Traveling as I have so much over the last
three months, and being one who sleeps
poorly in hotel rooms, I have seen lately
more than my share of television at what I
call the “Magic Pill Hour.” You might know
yourself, those wee hours of the morning
when you can flip channels and find infomercial
after infomercial touting the miracle
solution to every problem in our American
life. There is a magic pill to help you
stop smoking, a magic pill to help you have
clearer skin, and above all, there are magic
pills to make you lose weight. You don’t
need prescription drugs, you don’t need
will-power, you don’t need the slow,
steady work of diet and exercise. You only
need three easy payments of $19.95 … if
you call right now, operators are standing
by.
Are there really that many gullible people
out there? I would like to think that we as
a society are a little more educated, a little
more sophisticated, a little less sleepdeprived
than to fall for that. But apparently
I’m wrong. There’s a real market for
magic pills … and not just for matters of
health.
We don’t want to sweat. We don’t want to
strive. We don’t want to wait patiently for
results. We want results in six weeks or
less. Wars should last a month. Coach hasn’t
won the World Series in seven years?
Find a new guy who will win it this year!
We are a society that is addicted to quick
fixes.
But quick fixes are rarely good fixes. We
had a meeting recently of the youth leaders
of the parish to talk about what we
could do to keep our children in the church
as they moved into the college years and
beyond, for that is ultimately the goal of
our youth ministries. I did some research
on the subject: what programs work best?
What style of ministry proves effective?
Do you know what I learned? There is no
magic pill.
There are groups that have done scientific
surveys on these issues. Do you know
what they showed? The prescription for
growing young people who are actively
involved in church in their adulthood is
this: you raise them in a family where the
parents love each other and where the father
and the mother are weekly churchgoers,
all four seasons of the year. There is
no program, no sports league, no summer
camp, no retreat, no revival that can match
this combination for making lifelong church
-goers out of our kids.
THE VOICE January 2014
Today I have been asked to speak to you about stewardship. Stewardship of our church is really one of those areas where we
have indulged the fantasy of magic pills. Why do we have this community, with this building and this staff and these activities?
In a word, salvation. This whole business of church—and it behooves us to use the word “business” in this discussion—
this whole business of church exists for one reason and one reason only. To bring you to salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You are here because you understand yourself to be perishing and you seek from God the salvation that you need.
Now, who should pay for your salvation? You? Or someone else? The costs associated with spiritual development: who
should bear them? You? Or some non-parishioners with a taste for souvlaki and baklava? Churches have budgets: too often
churches try to meet that budget in ways that involve other people’s money.
We make plans to get salvation and to have someone else foot the bill. Often such plans don’t work so well. And even when
the fund-raising projects succeed, they fail—because they give the parishioners a sense that the working out of their salvation
falls to a third party and not utterly on themselves.
There is no magic pill to replace stewardship. Only dedicated, regular, sacrificial giving of your treasures, proportional to the
blessings you receive—only this in the long run serves to fund churches adequately.
It’s a lot to ask. And the church wouldn’t ask it of you … except it’s the only way. Nothing else works. Like diet plans that call
for no “carbs” or no meat or only salads before 3 pm, quick fixes don’t work for very long. If you want to lose weight, the
only proven approach is the slow steady lifetime approach of diet and exercise, of sweat and self-discipline.
If you want to have a church, a community with a building to house its worship and its activities, you have to ante up. You
have to give—and give a lot.
And you have to give up things you might otherwise like. You have to make your
church the top priority in your charitable giving, and not number two or three on
the list. There are lots of other worthy causes out there—the museum, the symphony,
Doctors without Borders— but spiritual health starts with a healthy local
church. No other organization in history has been the seedbed for human compassion
like the Christian Church. It is the soil in which most other humanitarian movements
have sprouted.
And to be a good steward, you also have to balance your spending on creature
comforts. You have to weigh the pleasures of life against the good of your soul. It
is problematic when a Christian spends more in a year on the country club than he
gives to his church, or spends more on concerts or season tickets or cable TV than
he gives to his church. There is a problem there, a profound problem of spiritual
wellness.
Here’s the bottom life: good stewardship is hard. We fool ourselves when we fail to say that out loud. It’s really a burden to
keep a church going, a burden on the families that hope to find salvation through the church. A lot of churches advertise
stewardship like something fun and easy. It isn’t. It won’t be. And if it is, then whatever you’re doing isn’t really stewardship.
There is no magic pill.
And yet … there is. If you really do commit yourself to the hard work of good stewardship, you will find that your sacrificial
giving is itself the magic pill.
Faithful, sacrificial stewardship is the amoxicillin that helps clear up the infection of materialism.
Faithful, sacrificial stewardship is the Motrin that relieves the pain and swelling of selfishness and hedonism.
Faithful, sacrificial stewardship is the Ritalin that helps us stay focused on the life of the Kingdom of God.
THE VOICE January 2014
It is the Xanax that relieves us of the worries that we have about the fate of our children and grandchildren in our present
society.
Stewardship is the Valtrex that suppresses outbreaks of covetousness.
It is the Celebrex that helps us breathe freely the air of joyful, grateful living.
It is the Prozac that alleviates the depression of feeling like our lives aren’t making a difference in the world, because as faithful
members of the church, we become part of God’s inexorable plan to redeem the entire universe.
When we give up on looking for magic pills to solve our church’s financial problems, paradoxically, we discover God’s miraculous
medicine for so many of our spiritual ills: namely, faithful, meaningful, generous, committed, proportional, regular sacrificial
stewardship.
The time has come to adjust your meds for the year to come. I come to you like Morpheus before Neo in the Matrix, with two
pills. What will you choose? The magic pill of wishful thinking? Or the miraculous medicine of giving back to God according
to the measure with which He has blessed you?
May our one true God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, enlighten you as you declare your commitment to the Lord in
your act of stewardship.
PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS
Our parishioner, John Lazares, was honored on November 26 th , as the name of the Warren County Alternative School was
officially changed to the John K. Lazares Alternative School. In 1995, John envisioned an alternative school designed to keep
students from dropping out of high school. Warren County Career Center donated land and $700,000 was raised for the project.
The school services grades 7-10 and over the last 15 years has won numerous awards.
Dr. Sarah Uhimchuk (mother of Beth Uhimchuk) was chrismated on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at St. George Greek Orthodox
Cathedral in Greenville, South Carolina by Father Athas John Pistolis. She took the name Kathrin and her sponsor was
Vasso Apostolides.
Outreach Ministries: Our Food Pantry
2013 marked the third year of our Good Shepherd Food Pantry. What started out as a way to
help families in need has grown into a vibrant Community Outreach Ministry. Our Holiday Outreach
Program touched over 200 families lives. As a community we worked together to help our
neighbors share in the blessing of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
We would like to thank Peter and Karen Aamodt for taking on the leadership responsibility for
this ministry. We also would like to extend our thanks to Kroger (Independence, KY) Walmart
(Smiley Road, Cincinnati), UFCW 75 Union for their generous contributions toward this program.
Even though Thanksgiving is eleven months away, discussions have begun for a much bigger goal for 2014. Many of our parishioners
have expressed an interest in cooking and serving a Thanksgiving meal for our neighbors. This is a very big project
and would take committed leadership and planning. If you think that you might want to volunteer for this committee, please
contact Fr. Bill, Fr. Irenaeus or Eugene Nicholas at 591-0030. We need to find a leadership team as soon as possible if this is
something that our Community would like to do this year.
Thank you to all of the individuals that have given so generously to make this ministry possible!
CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS
Happy New Year!
OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson
We had a great turnout for our Thanksgiving luncheon. And,
as always, we had a delicious lunch prepared by R&R Catering
and cranberry sauce by Alex Jonson.
This past year we had 118 paid members, 16 of which were
new. The new members are Chris and Lydia Batsakis, Eleni
Caddell, Karen Cook, Christine Economacos, Pete Gormas,
Ben Haninia, Dora Inempolidis, Gary and Maria Kalemanis,
John and Erato Kambelos, Helen Kostarides, Dina Naser,
Dorothy Polard, and Tina Zaferes.
We had four (4) members, past or present, that passed away
this past year. They were Marge Misali, Chris Petrou, John
Prasinos and most recently, Mary F. Beam. May their memories
be eternal. We will remember them always.
Our sympathy to Angie Sampson on the passing of her
brother this past November. May he rest in peace. Our sympathy
to the family of Mary F. Beam, who passed away on
December 2. I can only say, “She was such a sweet person
and always with a smile on her face”. A candle was lit in her
memory. May she rest in peace.
As always, I would like to thank my husband, Alex; his
brother, Jim; Jinny Balli and Koula Alex for their support and
to the many hosts and hostesses who helped us throughout
the year. To those of you who always just help without anyone
asking for your help, thank you, especially, Dave Dargis,
Dean Kamtchy, John Morris, and Irish Condorodis. Thank you
to my friend, Evridiki Vidas for helping me with the flyers.
Thank you to Eugene Nicholas and Chris Jonson for helping
me out whenever I needed them. Also, thank you to all of
you who donated towards desserts this year. It helps the
treasury so much. And, I am sure there are others that have
helped who I may have missed. Thank you.
Our next luncheon will be on January 18 at a restaurant.
PHILOPTOCHOS…Georgianne Gaz
The Ladies Philoptochos Society would like to thank everyone
in the community for their support of our Sweet Treats from
the Greeks Bake Sale. This bake sale is the primary Philoptochos
fundraiser, allowing our Chapter to not only meet its
National and Metropolis commitments, but to assist our local
community as well. I would like to give my sincerest appreciation
and gratitude to Eleni Zaferes who headed up the
Sweet Treats again this year. But as we all know, it is not a
job that can be done alone, and the Philoptochos members
and ladies of our community turned out regularly every Tuesday
through the months of October and November to prepare
the pastries. The efforts and skills of these women have
helped to build and maintain our community, and to them I
say THANK YOU for a job well done.
We would also like to thank the community for your generosity
in support of the Philoptochos Christmas Eve Tray.
The beginning of 2014 brings with it a busy schedule for the
Ladies of Philoptochos. The normal meeting schedule for
January has changed to Sunday, January 5, after services, in
order to accommodate the Vasilopita Breakfast.
The following Sunday, January 12, the annual Vasilopita
Breakfast and Auction will take place, which is open to the
community. Mary Simos will be heading up the meal preparation.
The cost of breakfast, which will include juice, scrambled
eggs, sausage, hash browns, fruit and of course VASILO-
PITA, will be $6 for adults and $3 for children. After breakfast,
the “auction” of Vasilopita will take place. Please bring
your family and join us for a great meal, fun and fellowship.
The proceeds will all go to help the children and staff of St.
Basil’s Academy.
Outreach Sunday will take place January 19 following Divine
Liturgy, and each of the Church organizations will participate
in the Outreach Sunday Chili Cookoff. Last year we had a
fantastic and varied selection of chilis… from goat chili to
chicken chili to vegetarian chili. We hope to increase the selection
of chili entries to be judged, and hope you all will join
us and participate.
The Ladies of Philoptochos would like to wish everyone in
our community a very healthy and happy 2014, and invite
you and members of your family to join us throughout the
year!
SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL…Cara Chryssovergis
The Annual parents Open House visits will be on January 26
and February 2. The intent of the Open House is to give parents
an insight into our classes and teaching methods. There
will be two sessions to accommodate families with multiple
children. The parents are invited to observe and participate
in our classrooms on January 26 for grades: K,1,4,5,7,8.and
on February 2 for grades: Pre-School,2,3,6,9-12. Please be
our guest in your child's classroom and see how much you
remember from your SCS days!
THE VOICE January 2014
Our Church School has classes for ages 3 years to high school
senior. In addition, SCS has introduced, "Living the Orthodox
Life"-- A Class for ADULTS to refresh understanding of Orthodox
essentials and explore the Orthodox faith with respect to
life. All SCS classes begin each Sunday with the Divine Liturgy
at 9:30 am. Class instruction begins directly following the
distribution of Holy Communion and ends at 11:45 am. One
of the best ways for anyone to build a foundation as an Orthodox
Christian is to attend Divine Liturgy and Church
School on a regular basis. Our SCS program is offered free of
charge thanks to your generous Stewardship donations.
We are in desperate need of assistant teachers or parent
helpers for Pre-School, and grades 6, 7, and 8. If you love
children and your Orthodox faith, we need you! Please consider
this opportunity to serve your parish and make our SCS
program exceptional. If you have any questions or would like
to volunteer your time and talents, contact Cara Chryssovergis
at 513-226-2746 or htsnscs@gmail.com.
Last year SCS converted to an all electronic registration system.
Because of the medical authorization form ALL STU-
DENTS must be registered electronically every year. A link to
the registration form is available on the Church website.
Please register your children if you have not already done so.
AHEPA…Andy Stefanopoulos
AHEPA concluded the 2013 year with the initiation of three
new members at our December meeting., This brings a total
of eight new members initiated in 2013: Dr. Ilias Iliopoulos,
Dr. Kostas Biliouris, George Loukoumidis, Nick L. Sarakatsannis,
Justin Bates, Militiades Karlos, James Schultz, and Nektarios
Papasavvas.
Our two main fundraising events, The Greek Independence
Dinner/Dance and the 100 Raffle were both successful. As a
result, our philanthropic donations went to The American
Farm School in Greece, National Alliance for Mental Health,
Youth and Shelter Services, IOCC, and the Buckeye Scholarship
Foundation.
We also gave scholarships to: Gabriella Stroplos, Katerina
Stroplos, Evan Stathis, and Stephanie Rodish.
We were also very pleased to be able to donate $5,000 to
the roof repair fund at Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas.
An added honor went to our chapter as we were awarded
the 2013 Chapter of the Year in the Buckeye District.
We look forward to 2014 as we will be hosting, along with
the Daughters of Penelope, the District Convention on June
13 – 15.
We trust you had a very Merry Christmas and may you have
a wonderful new year. We also wish to thank the entire community
for its continued support.
Roof Repair Update
The roof project is now complete. Our final bill came in below estimate. The complete
project cost just over $140,000. As of December 17th, we have raised $49,745 in donations
from 105 families and 1 organization. We have borrowed $62,000 from our line of
credit to make roof payments. If each household in our parish would consider a donation
of $250, we could minimize the amount of additional borrowing to pay for this project.
At this time in the life of our Parish, stewardship does not cover our daily expenses. Funding for these unexpected repairs
and capital improvements must be raised through your generosity.
Thank you to the parishioners who have already responded and to the ones who are planning to assist with our efforts.
