SC&I ACCOLADES Distinction & Honors Professor Vikki Katz Lecturer Nancy Kranich Professor Susan Keith Keith Receives Susman Award for Teaching Excellence Journalism and Media Studies Professor Susan Keith received the Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching on May 5. Named in memory of Rutgers professor and historian Warren I. Susman, the university gives this award to faculty “in recognition of outstanding service in stimulating and guiding the intellectual development of students at Rutgers University.” The award includes a $1,000 honorarium. Keith believes that being committed to the subject matter and being available to the students are probably the two most important parts of teaching. “Understanding students and their needs and understanding who you are as a teacher is a process, like working a puzzle. You won’t always solve it quickly or well, but if you are tenacious, there are rewards for the work,” she said. Katz Receives Rutgers Research Fellowship Communication Professor Vikki Katz received the Rutgers Board of Trustees Research Fellowship for Scholarly Excellence on May 5. This award honors faculty who have recently been promoted with tenure and whose work “shows exceptional promise.” Only 13 fellowships were awarded across the entire university. SC&I had a strong showing, with former Journalism and Media Studies Professor Aram Sinnreich also a recipient. ALA Honors Nancy Kranich with 2015 ALA Ken Haycock Award Library and Information Science Lecturer and Rutgers Special Projects Librarian Nancy Kranich received the 2015 American Library Association Ken Haycock Award for Promoting Librarianship in recognition of her “significant contribution to the public recognition and appreciation of librarianship through professional performance, teaching and/or writing.” TOC Wolfson Wins Clarion Award The Association for Women in Communications honored Journalism and Media Studies Professor Todd Wolfson with the 2015 Clarion Award in the “Newspaper Investigative Series” category for “Tapped Out,” a series of articles that focus on poverty in Philadelphia that appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News. Professor Todd Wolfson Greenberg Appointed as OAH Distinguished Lecturer Journalism and Media Studies Professor David Greenberg has been appointed as a distinguished lecturer for 2015–2016 by the Organization of American Historians (OAH). “I consider this lectureship both an honor and a form of service to the OAH,” said Greenberg. Four Graduates Accepted to Columbia School of Journalism The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism accepted four graduates of the Journalism and Media Studies program, including Azadeh Dehghan, Christopher Etienne, Carlett Spike and Santiago Melli-Huber. Rising Stars SC&I STUDENTS Journalism and Media Studies Chair and Professor Jack Bratich said, “We give students analytic and production techniques with an eye to social issues and community engagement. This intellectual and practical training makes our students attractive to top graduate programs.” “We’re fortunate to have some of the best qualified and well-prepared students in our classrooms,” said Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies Steven Miller. “We work with them to achieve their personal goals because this is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ major.” Graduate Carlett Spike New Student Organization and its President Honored with Awards Women in Technology and Informatics (WITI), launched in 2013 by Professors Rebecca Reynolds and Sharon Stoerger, received the Excellence in Organizational Achievement in Outstanding New Student Organization Award from Rutgers Student Life last spring. WITI co-president Shiffa Rizki, who interned at Alcoa, received the Internship Excellence Award in the Health, General Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math category from University Career Services in May. Rizki graduated in May and is an infrastructure analyst at Accenture. Grad Student Julia Cuddahy Helps Community Library Reach Underserved Julia Cuddahy, who is pursuing a Master of Information degree, recently embarked on a project in Professor Kay Cassell’s Planning Outreach Services class that resulted in improving the outreach of her local library to an underserved population. Cuddahy conducted a survey that was aimed at improving the Hamilton Township Free Public Library services for their Hispanic population, including many Trenton residents.
