RABBINIC REFLECTIONS — Share in Shabbat Annually at this time of the year our Torah reading cycle brings us to Mount Sinai. The children of Israel have first emerged from Egypt and before their journey is two months old, they are hearing God speak to them from the mountain. Nothing will ever be the same again. At Sinai, the People of Israel hear the voice of God and Moses descends from the mountain with the Ten Commandments. These ten utterances have formed the foundation of our faith, and the ultimate meaning of what it means to be a Jew. Each of these Commandments is an essential teaching of Judaism and none can be said to be more important than another, but of all the Commandments one has defined Jewish practice throughout the ages. The Fourth Commandment tells us “Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy,” and throughout history, Jews have been keeping Shabbat and using it as a standard of their commitment to God. While we use the term “Shomer Shabbat,” keeping Shabbat, as a description of our fidelity to God, it was the Zionist writer, Ahad Ha’am who wrote, “More than the Jews have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews.” Ahad Ha’am recognized that the observance and the meaning of Shabbat had cemented in the Jewish people a unique identity. Shabbat helps distinguish between Jews and non-Jews in a cultural as well as in a religious sense. He believed that strong senses of Jewish identify and pride was a direct result of observing and acknowledging Shabbat as our holy day. What he recognized over a century ago is even more accurate today. In a Jewish world that is that is under siege by the forces of assimilation and where people are struggling with purpose and meaning, there is no more important celebration than Shabbat. The observance and celebration of Shabbat helps cement our commitment to God, strengthen our relationship with the Jewish people, enhance our connection to community and reinvigorate our bond with our family. We do not keep Shabbat holy as much as Shabbat keeps us whole! Shabbat is a foundational element of EBJC. From Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday evening to Havdalah on Saturday night, Shabbat is the focal point of our community. Our mission as Jews must be to enhance the Shabbat experience for our members and Jews in our community. To that end we began a program last month that I call “Share in Shabbat.” It is a Friday night experience where Shabbat is the theme. We began with a family style singing service followed by a multigenerational Shabbat meal. We ate, we sang, we schmoozed and we played board games. Some played cards, some played checkers, all celebrated Shabbat in the spirit of Shabbat. This month we continue this tradition. Join Elana and I on Friday Night February 13th, for a singing service at 6:30 PM and stay for Shabbat dinner, cards, table games, talk and tea. We will Share in Shabbat as a community and as we do so we will be uplifted. For those senior adults who need round-trip transportation, we are pleased to offer a shuttle bus service with support of The Wilf Campus For Senior Living and the Jewish Federation of Middlesex County. Space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the EBJC office to reserve transportation. The Talmud tells the story of a Roman official who was speaking to Rabbi Joshua ben Hanania. He asked the Rabbi, “Why has the Sabbath dish such a fragrant odor?” The Rabbi told him, “We have a certain seasoning, called the Sabbath, which we put into it, and that gives it a fragrant aroma.” Indeed Shabbat gives this special aroma and flavor to our lives.
