See how technology has changed traditional approaches such as a written practical report into an interactive digital format. Explore how iTunes U courses can be used to present differentiated multimodal content and how the introduction of digital workbooks has changed and created how students submit work. This workshop explores the skills and practices students need to develop in junior and middle school Science to be best prepared for VCE. Using backwards planning techniques and building blocks of a Science skills scope and sequence, you will gain the resources necessary to equip your students with the tools to confidently to tackle VCE science. Curriculum: General 12 B16 Workshop on using chemistry demonstrations in the classroom Peter Barnard & Jason Dutton, La Trobe University Suitability: All Classroom chemistry demonstrations represent a valuable tool for illustrating scientific principles and as a means of promoting student learning. Many students respond favourably to visual learning techniques and classroom chemistry demonstrations provide teachers with a means or arousing a student’s curiosity and enthusiasm in the lesson being taught. Although classroom demonstrations offer the many advantages some teachers may be disinclined to use them as a result of the perceived inconvenience or difficulty in setting up the demonstration and the potential hazards associated with using chemistry demonstrations. In this workshop we will provide clear instruction on how a range of exciting and informative chemistry demonstrations are setup and safely performed. We will also discuss the scientific concepts illustrated by each demonstration. Delegates Note: This presentation will involve an oral presentation and a workshop to be held in the chemistry teaching laboratories at La Trobe University Curriculum: Chemistry B17 Immersion in Marine Science - Engaging kids with critters Sonny Voss, Dive Victoria Group Suitability: Primary/Secondary By making use of the unique form and function of marine animals and plants there is an opportunity to excite and engage students to explore concepts that might not otherwise be possible. Scaffolded activities from direct instruction to open-ended questions involving body form and survival strategy has the potential to hook students into their studies. In this presentation we look at the opportunities, activities and local locations that bring the marine world to your classroom or you to it. Curriculum: Biology B18 Exploring resources designed to help teachers extend students in science Debra Smith, Australian Science Innovations Suitability: All In this workshop teachers will be introduced to new resources that have been specifically designed to help teachers provide challenging extension activities available for academically gifted students. These include the new online resources available free of charge to all students who are contemplating sitting the Australian Science Olympiad Exams – the ultimate challenge for high school science students. It will also cover in a practical way how the results of competitions can be unpacked by teachers to help guide teaching and learning, using results from the Big Science Competition as an example. In this session, we will provide insights into how STEM can be seamlessly embedded into such a course of study: From shaping and testing boomerangs and other aerofoils to the study of avian anatomy in the search for design inspiration, participants will have hands-on experience of student inquiry activities. Also discover how 3D printing is changing the classroom, and PEGS’ unique partnership with the Qantas Flight Training facility.
