SESSION D
Friday 27 November: 3.05pm – 4.05pm
D8
Nanotechnology Workshop
Phebe Sabbarapu,La Trobe University
Suitability: Years 7 - 10/VCE Unit 1
Come and experience a hands-on
opportunity to produce gold nano
particles and ferrofluid as well as
investigate a number of additional
demonstrations and experiments
which characterize this exciting area of
science. Use the experience gained at
this workshop to engage your students
by conducting nanotechnology
demonstrations at your own school.
Experiments are suitable for middle
years and senior science. All teachers
will receive experimental procedures,
teacher guides for the above
experiments and information on how to
obtain resource materials.
Delegates Note: this is a DOUBLE
SESSION with C8
Curriculum: Chemistry
D9 CERES Mobile Energy
Classroom
Shane French, CERES
Suitability: All/VCE Units 1, 2, 3 & 4
Come and experience the new “pop
up” CERES Mobile Energy Classroom; a
traveling energy education tool for all
ages. We deliver experiential learning for
students and adults alike. We focus on
current energy sources and issues, future
energy, and how our lifestyle choices will
affect the direction of our energy needs
and the environmental and social impact
of this new energy future.
Join us, get inspired and find out how
we can support your teaching; adding
to your sustainability learning in the
classroom.
D10 Interactive Science Tests for
the Australian Curriculum
Bill Healy, Kilbaha Multimedia Publishing
Suitability: Years 5 - 10
Paper based testing is on the way out!
NAPLAN Testing will move online in
2017. Learn how to take your Science
Tests online with automatic marking.
See Interactive Science Tests developed
for the Australian Curriculum for Years 5,
6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Each question in each test
has an Australian Curriculum Reference.
One free interactive science test with
automatic marking for a class level of
your choice for all attendees.
D11 Yes, you really can teach an
old dog new tricks!
Brad Rundle, Trinity Grammar School
Suitability: All
There is no such thing as a mean
nasty dog. There is no such thing as a
stubborn cat. There is no such thing as
an annoying parrot. But, there is such a
thing as a dog that associates pain with
a human hand. There is such a thing as
a cat that has been forcefully pushed
through a pet door and will now avoid
the door at all costs. There is such a thing
as a parrot that has learnt that its owner
yells back when it screeches. You cannot
teach ‘nasty’ to a dog. You cannot teach
‘stubborn’ to a cat. You cannot teach
‘annoying’ to a parrot. But, you can teach
a dog to associate its owner’s hand with
love and affection. You can teach a cat
to respond and even come when called.
You can even teach a parrot to use a
quieter voice. An animal’s behaviour is
purposeful. If the behaviour served no
purpose then there would be no need
for the animal to continue the specific
behaviour. With time and patience, all
behaviours can be changed. Even innate
behaviours show room for modification
and improvement. Dr. Brad Rundle is
a biology teacher at Trinity Grammar
School and a Visiting Academic in the
Department of Zoology at The University
of Melbourne. This talk explores the
link between behaviour and learning
through the eyes of the animal kingdom.
This talk may contain nuts.
D12 Narmbool - engaging students
in the environment, science and
sustainability
Janelle Spierings & Mathew Dowler, The
Sovereign Hill Museums Association
Suitability: Years 4 - 10/VCE Units 1 & 2
Narmbool Environmental Discovery
Programs have been running since
2005 over which time they have
evolved to address specific curriculum
requirements in learning about
sustainability and biodiversity. By
investigating some biodiversity ‘hot
spots’ across the property, students
learn about the characteristics of healthy
habitats, how all things are connected
in ecosystems, and the impact of human
decisions in maintaining a healthy
environmental balance.
Narmbool Education Officers are
experienced teachers who understand
the planning requirements for a school
camp and can help plan curriculumrelated
outcomes as well as give
students the opportunity to build new
friendships, gain resilience and selfesteem
and build on social skills.
D13 Flipping Science
John Pearce, Salty Solutions Educational
Consultancy
Suitability: Years 4 - 10
The Flipped Classroom is “a pedagogical
approach in which direct instruction
moves from the traditional classroom
space to an individual learning space”,
but what does this mean in practical
terms. This session will explore some
ways in which you can flip your science
teaching to include more meaningful
“work done at home” for students as
well as potentially enable more time for
student engagement in class time.
Delegates Note: Please bring your
own earphones if you would like to
listen to embedded movies during the
presentation.
