Food Network was filled with Thanksgiving 

cooking shows over the weekend. 

There were traditional menus, the “perfect” 

roast turkey and debates about stuffing vs 

dressing. One cook advocated 

for corn bread 

as the basis of her dressing, 

another insisted 

adding oysters was a 

real holiday treat and a 

third loaded her recipe 

with mushrooms, to 

which my son commented 

as he passed 

through the kitchen, 

“Please don’t do that.” 

The most interesting 

were the classic side

dishes with a twist. Green beans, without 

cream of mushroom soup. Caramelized Brussels 

sprouts with butternut squash and dried 

cranberries. Sweet potatoes with marshmallows 

folded in, not sprinkled on top. 

I decided to try that last one. 

The celebrity chef I watched placed a baking 

sheet of miniature marshmallows under the 

broiler, toasted them until they were just one 

step before charred, let them cool, then broke 

them apart and folded into the sweet potato 

mixture along with cream, eggs, butter and 

brown sugar. 

I kept a close eye on the broiler, thought the 

marshmallows weren’t quite toasty enough, so 

returned to the recipe and finished chopping 

pecans. 

Unfortunately, I finished that task and 

moved onto another, completely forgetting my 

marshmallows. 

The smell of a campfire reminded me of the 

oven. Too late. We were now several steps past 

toasted. 

That big black mess of marshmallows was

Rewind to the Renaissance this 

Christmas season. 

Iowa Lakes Community College’s 

music department will host its 

16th annual Elizabethan Madrigal 

Feaste on Dec. 5-6 at the VFW Post in 

Estherville. 

Visitors to the event will feel like 

they’re walking back in time as VFW 

Post 3388 is transformed into a 16th 

century castle for a lord and lady’s 

Christmas feast. 

“It’s like a giant play the whole evening 

and the guests are all part of it as 

nobility attending a Christmas feast 

hosted by the lord and lady,” Iowa 

Lakes Community College instrumental 

director Carol Ayres said. 

The event came to Estherville by 

way of Wayne, NE, and Iowa Lakes 

Community College choir director 

Brett Fuelberth. As a student at Wayne 

State College, Fuelberth had a professor 

who wrote scripts for madrigal 

dinners. 

“He kind of pioneered them in the 

Midwest and I bought some of the 

scripts from him,” Fuelberth said. 

“We were looking to perform something 

here and it has turned into a 

wonderful evening of food and entertainment.” 

The entertainment starts the minute 

guests enter under a canopy of swords 

to the announcement of their names. 

It continues throughout the evening 

with jokes from the court jester, stories, 

songs and musical performances. 

The sounds of the Royal Iowa Lakes 

Chamber Choir, My Lady of the Lakers 

Handbell Ringers, The King’s Brass 

Ensemble and Her Majesty’s Recorder 

Consort ring throughout the hall during 

the five-course meal. 

Some guests will already be familiar 

with the festivities at the Madrigal 

Feaste. 

“Some of our audience members 

have been here every year and some 

even wear costumes,” Ayres said. “It’s 

become a tradition for some people.” 

Medieval-themed attire is not a requirement 

for attendance, but reservations 

should be made soon. 

The Madrigal Feaste regularly sells 

out both nights. Tickets are $20 and 

reservations must be made and paid 

for by Dec. 3 to secure a spot at the 

king’s castle. 

“It’s a really fun night,” Ayres said. 

“The VFW has wonderful food, it’s a 

really festive atmosphere with a play 

going on in the middle of it all.” 

While the true Christmas feasts of 

the middle ages would often last for 

several days, this one concludes after 

about three hours. 

Some traditions originating in 16thcentury 

England, like wassail toasting, 

flaming pudding and parading a 

boar’s head into the dining hall, live 

on during the madrigal in Estherville. 

It all makes for quite an evening. 

“We work on the music for four 

months and it’s our big performance 

of the fall semester,” Fuelbert said. 

“It’s more than an event, it’s really 

an experience. You really get into the 

Christmas mood and it’s truly a fun 

night.”

The holiday season is officially 

here and it’s time to get into the 

Christmas spirit. The Big Sioux 

River Valley Historical Society, also 

known as the Hawarden Historical 

Society, has a plan for helping you get 

into the spirit of the season. 

Six homes will be opening their 

doors to visitors on Saturday, Dec. 5, 

from 1-4:30 p.m. for the Hawarden 

Holiday Tour of Homes. 

“On Saturday, Dec. 5, you can tour 

six homes in town,” said David Pusey, 

the president of the Hawarden Historical 

Society. “All the homes will be 

decorated for Christmas and each will 

have something special. I know one

of the homeowners will feature her 

collection of vintage China dolls and 

stockings.” 

The homes have a distinct feel and 

were built at different times. 

The Historical House was built at 

the turn of the 20th century. The “Pink 

House,” now owned by Bob and 

Kathy Fitch, was built in the American 

Queen Anne style in 1889. There are 

also three Craftsman homes on the 

tour as well as a house that was built 

in 1978. There will be a home for just 

about everyone’s taste. 

Tickets can be purchased prior to 

the event at a variety of businesses 

in Hawarden, but on the day of the

At the Historical House, people will

be able to enjoy some refreshments,

Homes is a fundraiser for the Hawarden 

Historical Society. In addition to the 

tour, another fundraiser that will be 

running concurrently is a quilt raffle. 

Tickets for the raffle can be purchased 

at the same places that are selling 

the tickets for the Tour of Homes. 

Tickets for the raffle cost $5 for a 

single ticket or three tickets for $10.

old city hall, as well as reviving and 

maintaining Calliope Village,” Pusey

In addition to being a fundraiser, 

the organizers hope this event spreads 

some holiday cheer. 

“We hope this helps get people in 

the Christmas spirit and they are kind 

of neat homes as well just to be able 

to see,” Pusey said. “We are so thankful 

to the homeowners who are opening 

their homes and letting us do this 

event. It takes a lot of work on their 

part and we’re so happy.” F

with the Rock Valley Festival

Lighting up the night 

Festival of Lights jumpstarts the season in Rock Valley 

Winter lengthens the nights 

but during the holiday season 

that darkness takes on 

a sparkly glow with the addition of 

Christmas lights. 

Rock Valley will be hosting an event 

where those lights take center stage. 

The 3rd annual Festival of Lights is 

set to take place on Thursday, Dec. 3, 

from 3:30-7 p.m. 

“It’s a family type of event and provides 

an outing for kids and families,” 

said Keith Sietstra, the community activities 

and chamber director in Rock 

Valley. “It’s our way of welcoming the 

holiday season.” 

The Festival of Lights kicks off at 

3:30 p.m. at the Lighthouse facility 

downtown, which is located just west 

of Pizza Ranch. At that indoor location, 

they have all kinds of activities 

and crafts set up for kids to have a 

ball. They will be making ornaments, 

coloring bags and decorating cookies. 

“We have tables full of activities 

and chamber businesses volunteer to 

man those tables,” Sietstra said. “We 

also bring over 300 Christmas tree 

cookies with green frosting. The kids 

can make and take them home or eat 

them right there.” 

The Lighthouse will also be the 

place to hear some music, visit with 

Santa, as well as watch a holiday movie. 

They’ll be playing “Home Alone” 

for those who want to stay inside 

where it’s warm. 

There will also be sleigh rides 

around downtown and this year they 

are incorporating something completely 

new into the Festival of Lights 

event. 

“We’re going to be doing a downtown 

holiday scavenger hunt. There 

will be 15 different places where kids 

or parents or families can go,” Sietstra 

said. “They’ll collect clues and come 

back. If people are able to get to all 

the places then they will get a free 

smoothie.” 

Hegg Memorial will be hosting the 

3rd annual Frosty 5k and Merry Mile 

fun run/walk later on in the evening at 

5:30 p.m. They will be giving a prize 

for the best costume. 

“Last year, they had about 75-100 

runners. They were all decked out in 

twinkly lights, jingle bells, Santa hats, 

and other fun things,” Sietstra said. 

After the race wraps up, it’s time to 

don the winter gear and head to 14th 

Street for the main event. 

The lighted parade starts around 6:15 

p.m., and while it’s not huge, it is impressive 

in a completely different way. 

“We usually only have about 15 

bussinesses or groups with a lit float 

and we go down 14th Street, because 

it is a street that doesn’t have a ton of 

lights. Everyone really enjoys seeing 

it,” Sietstra said. 

“I think it’s one of the most fun 

things to see the lighted parade. It’s 

fun to see the excitement of the holiday 

season in the eyes of the youth, 

residents and visitors.” F

comes Sinterklaas. Right down 

Central Avenue. Astride his great 

white horse and trusty helper Piet. 

Families are invited to welcome them 

to town and join in the parade to 

town hall in Orange City. 

The annual Sinterklaas Day kicks off 

at 10:30 a.m. with everyone gathering 

at the Stadscentrum in downtown 

Orange City to greet Sinterklaas. 

“There will be a brass brand and 

songs to welcome Sinterklaas to 

town,” Dutch Heritage Boosters board 

member Randy Van Peursem said. 

“Then we will parade down Central 

Avenue to town hall with the town 

crier heralding our arrival.” 

Once at town hall the children will 

get to take in a puppet show from 

Lisa Laird and hear educational and 

historical stories about Sinterklaas. 

“We try to make the experience fun,

entertaining and educational at the 

same time,” Van Peursem said. 

A variety of games will be set up for 

children in various age groups ranging 

from pre-kindergarten to fourth 

grade. The games themselves, while 

entertaining and fun, also have an 

educational tilt. 

There is Schieten Noten, or Shooting 

Nuts, a Memory Game as well as 

Drop the Carrot. 

Traditionally children in Holland 

leave shoes outside filled with carrots 

and hay for Sinterklaas’ horse, 

Amerigo. 

“It’s educational and historical and 

good, clean fun for families and kids,” 

Van Peursem said. “There will be 

some coloring as well and a chocolate 

treat at the end.” 

The whole event lasts a little over 

an hour and Van Peursem thinks it’s 

something everyone can enjoy. 

“It’s geared towards kids and they’ll 

definitely enjoy the show and games, 

but really the parents have fun a lot of

Sinterklaas, also known as 

Saint Nicholas, is dear to the 

hearts of Dutch children. He can 

be recognized by his eye-catching 

red cape with red miter 

and his long white beard. The 

saintly man arrives each year in 

mid-November on a steam boat 

filled with gifts and together 

with his helpers, all referred to 

as ‘Piet’ (Peter). 

For children, this means they 

can put their shoe next to the 

chimney or back door. At night, 

Sinterklaas rides across the rooftops 

on his white horse, Amerigo, 

and places little treats or gifts in 

the children’s shoes, assisted by 

his helpers, the Peters. Traditional 

sweets are gingerbread men, 

spiced biscuits, marzipan and 

chocolate letters. Satisfy your 

sweet tooth and buy these sweets 

at any supermarket or bakery. 

The holiday itself is celebrated 

in Dec. 5, when gifts are exchanged. 

Children sing songs 

to Sinterklaas at the top of their 

lungs until they hear a knock on 

the door. If they have been good, 

they will find a bag filled with gifts 

just outside the door.

Spencer Community Theatre presents “A Christmas Carol” 

One of Charles Dickens’ most 

popular tales is coming to life 

in Spencer. 

The legendary anti-Christmas, Bahhumbuging 

character of Scrooge will 

take the stage in an adaptation of 

Charles Dickens’ perennial holiday 

favorite, “A Christmas Carol.” 

But this isn’t your average production 

of the show. 

The basic plot of the show will remain 

the same. It features the grumpy 

Scrooge on Christmas Eve as he meets 

three ghosts, The Ghosts of Christmas 

Past, Present and Future. The audience 

can watch as Scrooge transforms 

from the villain of Christmas to the 

embodiment of the Christmas spirit. 

The Spencer Community Theatre 

production is adding a twist to this 

well-known story. 

Here comes, 

Scrooge! 

The production that will be on stage 

at the Spencer Community Theatre 

from Dec. 4-13 will be set to music. 

“This show is a very close adaptation 

of the original novella he wrote 

in 1843, but it’s a musical,” said Cara 

Gerlock, the show’s director and the 

artistic director at the Spencer Community 

Theatre. “It’s a faithful adaptation 

with the addition of a little spectacle 

— music, singing and dancing.” 

The music for the show was composed 

by Alan Menken with lyrics by 

Lynn Ahrens. 

“The music is by some of the same 

people who composed for ‘The Little 

Mermaid,’ ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Beauty and 

the Beast,’” said Gerlock. “Disney’s 

heavy-hitters composed the music for 

this show and it’s just beautiful. It has 

funny and scary moments. This is the 

version we’ve been waiting for.” 

And Spencer Community Theatre 

has been waiting a long time. 

This is the 56th season of the Spencer 

Community Theatre, and they 

have never before staged a production 

of “A Christmas Carol.” 

“We’ve been wanting to do ‘A 

Christmas Carol’ for some time. There 

are many stage adaptations out there 

and we’ve been waiting for the right 

one for our organization,” Gerlock 

said. “This is one of those productions 

that you can find tons of options, and 

we wanted to find the right one.” 

The cast for this production numbers 

61 and ranges in age from adults 

to kids. They started rehearsals for this 

Christmas classic way back in October 

and bringing this show to life has 

been a fun experience for both cast,

“Honestly, my favorite part is that 

I love the rehearsal process. It’s very 

enjoyable for me and it’s the very first 

show I’ve gotten to direct with my 

children in it,” Gerlock said. 

It’s also a story that has been loved 

for 173 years. 

“There’s something about this 

show that can resonate with everybody. 

There’s some little part of us 

that has one of Scrooge’s vices or 

idiosyncrasies. There’s a little Scrooge 

in all of us,” Gerlock said. “It’s a message 

of hope, redemption and joy 

that we all still respond to. If we can 

hold out that hope and find joy and 

happiness we can change ourselves 

for the better.” F
