ORANGE CITY—Hospice care provides peace for<br />
people in their final moments, but finding a comfortable<br />
place to stay while receiving such services<br />
is a challenge in N’West Iowa.<br />
Janelle Volkers of Orange City knows from personal<br />
experience how valuable quality hospice care<br />
facilities can be, and she’s seeking to build a hospice<br />
care facility of her own in Orange City.<br />
Fundraising material describes the facility, named<br />
Evensong Hospice Home, as Iowa’s first and only<br />
nonprofit private-pay hospice home.<br />
“The name Evensong was in my devotions about<br />
four years ago,” Volkers said. “It’s a Gaelic term for<br />
the end of the day, the last songs of the day or the<br />

REGIONAL—It’s been a bit of a slow flow<br />
for the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System<br />
for the past few months, but another<br />
round of federal funding has led to a rush<br />
of excitement.<br />

year 2023 Appropriations Bill on Dec. 29,<br />

winter vacation this week as another<br />
snowstorm rolled in, with this one topping<br />
which includes $18.6 million for ongoing<br />
construction for Lewis & Clark.<br />
While Lewis & Clark received $22 million<br />
from the same bill last fiscal year, the $18.6<br />
million is what leaders from the regional<br />
water system were asking for in 2023.<br />
“We were very pleased. Part of it was<br />
proposed by the administration and the<br />
biggest chunk came from a congressional<br />
request, known as an earmark,” said Troy<br />

in 2019. The award recognizes<br />
Americans who have responded to<br />

acted bravely to prevent the victimization<br />
