Side Trip:
Are your patio pots filled with colorful
blooms? Is your garden planted? Or
are you waiting for two consecutive
days without rain before attempting to get
seeds in the ground?
I’ve visited a couple
of greenhouses in the
last week in search of
flowers but resisted
the temptation to
buy vegetable plants.
As much as I’d enjoy
the fresh produce,
nurturing the plants
throughout the summer
has not proven
to be my strength in
recent years.
By midsummer, I
end up feeling guilty
when grasshoppers eat my green beans and
blight takes over my tomato vines.
I’m sticking with herbs again this year
— basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano and
such. I picked those up at the greenhouse
last week and have been keeping them alive
in their little pots waiting for an evening
that I’m home and that it’s not raining.
Herbs seem to do just fine without attention
from me, and while it’s not much,
they do add a touch of freshness to summer
cooking.
My very sad tulips come back each year, a
few persistent strawberries (that the birds usually
eat before we get to them) and the chives.
And now the mint.
If you have ever had a patch of mint, you
know what I’m talking about. The shoots
are springing up everywhere, taking over the
herb garden little by little, seemingly each
day. But that mint did come in handy for
the week leading up to the Kentucky Derby
when my son asked about the ingredients
to make a mint julep.
I couldn’t provide him with the traditional
metal cup for serving, but finding enough
mint was not a problem.
Now that I think about it, this may be the
summer of mojitos.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words.
The newest photography exhibit at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center says a lot more
than that.
“Okoboji’s Photographic Palette” is on exhibit
in the Weaver Lobby Gallery and McIlrath Landing
Gallery from April 18-July 6.
This exhibit was curated by local photographer
Tom Gustafson and features 11 local artists. The
exhibit works alongside his book by the same
name. The collection features some photography
veterans as well as some photographers for whom
this will be their first gallery exhibit.
“This show is exciting because we have photographers
who have used their medium and art
form in a lot of different ways from those who do
it for a magazine or newspaper, to those who have
a passion for it and others who have made it into
their business,” said Danielle Clouse Gast, the visual
arts director at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.
The subject matter that the exhibit features is
also something that Clouse Gast is excited about.
“It’s a really fun combination of photographers
and it’s so fun to see their different views of the
Iowa Great Lakes — it’s one location but there are
so many different perspectives,” Clouse Gast said.
Giving locals a chance to show off why they
love the Iowa Great Lakes is something that
Clouse Gast enjoys about this exhibit.
“I enjoy any chance the art center has to feature
where we live and to feature local artists,” Clouse
Gast said. “When people walk into the art center
they are greeted with the Okoboji landscape from
a variety of perspectives — from night captures to
drone photography.”
Make sure to take in the exhibit and see just
what words these pictures communicate to
you. F
Ritual
Kelly Devitt comes full circle with new exhibit
Student, intern, featured artist.
It’s a full circle moment for
Kelly Devitt with her new exhibit,
“Ritual,” now on display at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
“As a kid I actually took a lot of
courses here at the art center and I
actually interned here when I was
doing my undergrad at Iowa State, so
this is definitely super special,” Devitt
said.
Devitt had actually begun pursuit
of a career in interior design when
she took a ceramics class. That pivoted
her toward a degree in integrated
studio art followed by a master’s degree
in fine arts from the University
of Massachusetts — Darthmouth.
“Ritual” is derived from work she
began during her grad school years
and is her first major body of work
outside of that time frame.
A series of anthropomorphic ceramic
pieces in vibrant as well as a
wall installation will inspire reflection
and introspection in the viewer.
“This show is very
much about the daily
rituals and practices
we have in the sense
of doing the same
motions over and over
again, primarily in
terms of taking care
of one’s body,” Devitt
said. “The piece on
the wall is made of
around 150 CeraVe
bottles — lotion I put on every day
and created from models I made. A
lot of the work started in grad school
and morphed into being about confidence
or a lack of confidence. I find
a lot of viewers can relate to the work
in some sort of bodily way.”
Even attempts to stitch together
mistakes in a particular work fit into
the overall theme of the show.
“I very much embrace the mistakes
and the flaws and so when there are
mistakes I’m able to punch in medical
sutures. It’s also about the idea of
fixing something that maybe can’t be
fixed,” Devitt said.
Devitt invites viewers to inspect
the pieces and check out those mistakes
up close and personal.
“Having the viewer come close
and experience the materiality of it,
interacting and questioning what
it’s made out of — that’s important
to me,” Devitt said. “Ultimately the
overall theme is about one’s confidence
and sense of belonging and
how we’re all connected through the
structure of our bodies.” F
Classics and Pops
concert
Whether you’re a fan of jazz, pop,
country, blues, folk, rock ’n’ roll
or classical music, the Worthington
Area Symphony Orchestra has your
favorite genre covered this month.
“Classics and Pops,” their spring concert
scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May
21, at Memorial Auditorium Performing
Arts Center, features a collaboration with
the nationally renowned men’s vocal octet,
Cantus.
As a result, the 90-minute concert will
touch on a variety of musical tastes, ranging
from Billy Joel’s “Lullabye” (Goodnight,
My Angel) to Marvin Gaye’s “Dancing
in the Street” to Aaron Copland’s
“Hoedown” and more.
“The audience will truly have a good
time and will recognize a lot of the popular
tunes we’ll be sharing,” assured Beth
Habicht, a WASO violinist and leadership
team member. “Cantus planned a tour to
towns in southwest Minnesota and contacted
us — and we’re so excited to have
them.
Indeed, the Twin Cities-based Cantus
performs at least 80 concerts in an average
year; in 2024, their travels will take
them to Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Georgia,
Alabama, Arizona and Tennessee,
among other locations.
Recent Cantus engagements have been
at St. Paul’s Ordway Center for the Performing
Arts and Landmark Center and
at Westminster Hall and the Luminary
Arts Center in Minneapolis. In past years,
they’ve sung to sold-out houses at the
Kennedy Center for the Arts and toured
China, Taiwan, South Korea, Colombia
and Scandinavia.
Therefore, the chance to hear (close to
home and for a reasonable ticket price)
the classically trained ensemble, known
for its members’ entertaining flair, tuneful
voices and harmonies that prompt
swooning, is one that shouldn’t be
missed, organizers emphasize.
“It would cost a lot more to hear Cantus
at a Twin Cities venue,” said Tammy
Makram, managing director of Memorial
Auditorium. “I’m thrilled for WASO and
Worthington to have Cantus here; it will
be one of those nights that will lift you
right out of your seat, and I especially like
that they’re doing both classics and pops
music.”
In addition to the Tuesday evening
concert, Cantus will share a daytime program
with Worthington middle and high
school students.
As WASO wraps up its 14th anniversary
year, collaborating with Cantus is a fitting
way to mark another annual milestone.
Every week there will be different offerings in
terms of music, kids activities and vendors.
“Part of what makes our market unique is that
we highlight our vendors and add an aesthetic
with music, kids activities, and yoga,” said Krissy
Thiessen, who started and runs the event. “This
year we have a full schedule of bands, yoga with
The Studio Yoga and Barre, and kids activities
from various local establishments every Saturday.”
This year, there will be a great variety of vendors
to check out each week.
“We have 42 vendors this season. I think all of
them offer something unique and are worth highlighting.
However, our crowd can expect a lot of
our returning vendors paired with a few new ones
including Alpha’s Alternatives (hemp products),
Nova Patisserie (freshly made crepes), Pleasant
Lake Peppers (wide variety of hot sauces), and
Boji’s Bloody’s (homemade Bloody Mary mixes),”
Thiessen said.
Thiessen is excited about offering up an event
to bring local producers and the community together.
“The goal of Farmers Market in the Park has
always been to increase awareness and advocate
for buying local as well as building community
around that goal. We love that our golden rule
of the market is ‘you must make or grow your
own items.’ Everyone carefully hand-crafts their
products and creates something truly special,”
Thiessen said. “Increasing community awareness
of these products is our mission. I also want to
mention that we could not accomplish any of this
without the huge amount of support from our
sponsors!”
Thiessen is excited for this summer’s Farmers
Market in the Park — to be bringing people together.
“I’m most looking forward to seeing our community
come together once again to support all
these local growers and craftsmen,” Thiessen said.
“It is such a heart warming and special event and
we couldn’t be more thrilled with the level of
growth we’ve seen since our first season.” F
Bar’s most popular event.
“You know whenever there’s a full
There’s nothing better in Okoboji than
dancing under the palm trees and howling
at the moon.”
GoodRoad is no stranger to the Barefoot
Bar and most recently appeared on the
stage there during Winter Games, when
Johnson noted that they really brought the
party and he expects nothing less with the
first Full Moon Party of the year.
