In 1940s Brighton, the vicious criminal Pinkie Brown
(the late great Richard Attenborough) is the leader
of his small-time gang. After Brown murders a rival,
he finds an alibi through a waitress, Rose (Carol
Marsh), whom he promises to marry in return for her
corroboration. Despite the police ruling it a suicide, Ida
Arnold (Hermione Baddeley), a woman who was with
Brown’s victim before the murder, continues with her
own investigation. Meanwhile, Brown is rapidly losing his
grip on the situation. Based on Graham Greene’s novel
and screenplay, you can see this classic black and white
gangster film back on the big screen this winter.
In the week leading up to their 45th wedding
anniversary, a couple receive an unexpected letter
which contains potentially life changing news - turning
an apparently everyday story of a marriage in quiet
crisis into something rather extraordinary. Is there such
a thing as a ‘good and happy’ marriage? Can secrets
and desire tear that marriage apart and can we ever
really know someone and what they are thinking? Full
of emotion and triumph and starring award winners
Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, see this critically
acclaimed film (tipped for an Oscar) at Square Chapel.
“A moving and absorbing drama...wonderfully
acted.” Peter Bradshaw - The Guardian
