Kathleen Turner as Eileen in The Perfect Family
The Perfect Family’s Cleary Family
Featrure Article
The Perfect Family boasts a star-studded
cast: Kathleen Turner, Emily Deschanel,
and Jason Ritter. Kathleen Turner was
intrigued by the humor and complexity
of the main character, Eileen Cleary, who
struggles with the faults of her supposed
perfect family, and was the first to sign on
to the project. The film explores the preconceived
ideals of family in our evolving
culture, as well as current LGBT themes. It
is a wonderful example of a dramatic and
humorous film that started with an InkTip
script listing and later found traction in the
festival circuit and indie market.
“I was thrilled to find InkTip,” Anne
Renton stated. “I want to really thank
InkTip for allowing me to be on the site
and for the support in getting my script
lead out to the writers. That was the seed
to enable me to move forward with my
first film project!”
Another award-winning film found on
InkTip is Scout, a coming-of-age indie
film written and directed by Laurie Weltz
and produced by Beverley A. Gordon
with BrownBag Pictures. Scout won
Official Selection of the 2015 Newport
Beach Film Festival. When asked why
writer/director Laurie Weltz utilized
InkTip to market her script, she said, “I
had put another project up on InkTip and
had success with it, so I decided to do it
again. I think it is a great vehicle for writers
to get their work viewed by people
who might not ordinarily see it.”
Like Kathleen Turner’s interest in Eileen
Cleary, it was the multi-dimensional
character of Scout that attracted Beverley
to the script, and the question of “what is
family” that the script raises, which connected
with Beverley’s ideal to produce
moving, inspirational films.
“While reading the screenplay I was
inspired by the lead character Scout. She
was a refreshingly smart, resourceful,
desperate, and flawed female character
whose development and journey I
thought rose above being superficial and
stereotypical. I thought her story was
being told in a serious, yet still humorous
way,” Beverley said.
Operator, A Horse for Summer, The
Perfect Family, and Scout are all contemporary
films. Many times InkTip is asked
if period pieces sell in Hollywood. Yes,
they are harder to sell, to finance, and to
distribute, but they are made – and made
off of InkTip. Shadow on the Mesa is a
western that was discovered on InkTip
