Making packaging solve 

global food waste crisis 

I've spent several hours booking 

another foreign trip on a 

way-too-expensive inconvenient 

flight to an airport some distance 

from where I need to be. When 

I get there, I'll be sharing the 

basement of an elderly lady’s 

house with a ceramic fireplace 

collection and most likely an 

Italian label machine sales guy. 

Yes. It’s interpack time again. 

So will start another chance to 

be amazed and astounded by the 

quantity and variety of packaging 

machines, products and materials 

as 2,700 exhibitors and 160,000 plus visitors vie for their share of 

the $797billion worldwide packaging market. ‘The biggest industry 

you've never heard of’ is also in the spotlight as global concerns 

about sustainability, efficiency and waste take up more of the 

media and public awareness. 

Roughly 50% of packaging is food related and interpack is 

highlighting the huge annual carbon footprint of worldwide food 

waste – 3.3 Gigatons of CO2. Compared to national CO2 

emissions, this puts food waste behind only China and the 

USA’s total CO2 output. 

This presents our industry with a real opportunity to make a 

difference to our environment by developing and using innovative 

new packaging concepts, machines and technologies to reduce 

this staggering figure. The German exhibition and our own PPMA 

Show later in the year will present the results of many businesses 

that have put sustainability at the heart of their corporate planning. 

Waste reduction will follow the ability to form and use less or 

thinner materials, with improved barrier properties, potentially with 

‘intelligent’ coatings, to increase shelf life and therefore the 

percentage of food sold that is actually consumed. New systems 

for flexible packaging reduce volumes of incoming materials and 

outgoing packs. And new disinfection and aseptic systems at the 

point of packaging will minimise spoil and pack integrity testing 

while rejection in high risk areas will allow repacking of good food. 

Automation reduces human contact with food and allows the 

maximum potential speed of lines to be maintained thus reducing 

the time from pack to ship and the energy consumed creating 

each pack. Advanced sensing and new vision systems combined 

with condition monitoring and predictive maintenance systems will 

keep machines running for a higher proportion of the time and 

will ensure packs are correctly filled and labelled. 

There are many ways that designers and companies in our 

industry are developing new ideas in this field. PPMA figures 

suggest that 43% of Machinery Update readers package food.

And in case you fear a 

backlash from putting your 

head above the parapet, then 

it can all be conducted 

anonymously. And in case you 

think this is still too risky, you 

can rely on trade associations 

to put your views anonymously. 

And it’s not just associations 

such as the Food & Drink 

Federation and the National 

Farmers Union, it also 

includes the PPMA. 

Survey coming 

Indeed, the groceries code 

adjudicator will be conducting 

a survey in the coming weeks 

that will be distributed to direct 

suppliers but also to indirect 

suppliers via the PPMA. 

The aim of this survey is to 

benchmark today’s situation 

against future events and to 

see if the Groceries Supply 

Code of Practice – or GSCOP 

– is levelling the playing field. 

“Survey findings will be 

published with the Annual 

Report and Accounts in the 

summer,” explains head of 

operations and policy in the 

adjudicator’s office, Angela 

Latta. “I would encourage all 

suppliers to take part as we 

want it to be as robust as 

possible,” she tells Machinery 

Update. “The more we can 

promote the Code of Practice 

the better,” she says. 

“This is good news as far 

as automating the food sector 

is concerned and for our 

members as most supply their 

machinery to the sector,” says 

the PPMA’s Grant Collier. “After 

surveying the 367 manufacturers 

that went through the 

government’s automating 

manufacturing programme 

there is clear evidence that the 

reluctance to adopt automation 

is in part driven by endless 

squeezing of supplier margins 

by the major multiple retailers. 

“Hopefully the adjudicator’s 

actions will help change this 

culture and enable long 

needed automation of the 

UK’s largest manufacturing 

industry.” 

PPMA Show 

Christine Tacon is a former 

boss of the Co-operative 

Group’s farming business and 

was appointed to the role of 

groceries code adjudicator 

last January. She is 

responsible for enforcing 

GSCOP which regulates 

interactions between the ten 

largest supermarkets and their 

direct suppliers. 

In this role, she has the 

power to launch investigations 

into suspected breaches of 

the code, impose fines and 

also arbitrate disputes 

between large supermarkets 

and their suppliers. Indeed, 

she will be sharing the very 

latest state of play at the 

PPMA Show at the NEC, 

Birmingham in the autumn.

Apprenticeships 

– get involved 

With National Apprenticeship 

Week taking place at the 

beginning of March, Skills 

and Enterprise Minister 

Matthew Hancock believes 

there has never been a 

better time to start thinking 

about offering a young 

person an apprenticeship or 

a traineeship. 

Hundreds of employers 

are now behind traineeships, 

helping to unlock the 

potential of motivated young 

people who are not yet work 

ready. And the Government 

is urging even more 

employers to get involved to 

help 16-23 year olds gain 

the vital work experience 

needed in order to get an 

apprenticeship or other job. 

Traineeships give 

unemployed young people 

work preparation training 

and work experience as 

well as English and maths 

qualifications. 

“We introduced 

Traineeships to unlock the 

great potential of young 

people,” says Hancock. 

“Employers involved in the 

programme are now helping 

their trainees to develop 

the skills that are required in 

the workplace.” 

Meanwhile, the search is 

now on to find the country’s 

top apprentices and 

apprenticeship employers. 

The National Apprenticeship 

Service challenges the top 

apprenticeship employers 

and apprentices to come 

forward and show how 

apprenticeships have made 

a real difference to them. 

Now in their eleventh year, 

the awards are an 

opportunity to highlight the 

success stories.

Investment plans boost 

GB economic activities 

Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) 

has announced plans to invest 

£1million a week this year to 

boost productivity and 

efficiency in its business in 

Great Britain. 

Key projects include the 

installation at the company’s 

flagship Wakefield factory of a 

new production line dedicated 

to making the iconic contour 

Coca-Cola bottle in large PET 

sizes (1.25 litre and 1.75 litre). 

The company also plans to 

install a CHP (combined heat 

and power system) at 

Wakefield, which will save 

1,500 tonnes of CO2 a year. 

And in March, CCE officially 

opened a £30million 

automated 

warehouse at the 

site – with 

capacity to hold 

30,000 pallets.

its 25th 

anniversary this 

year and the

installations

canning line at its Sidcup 

facility. The line’s capacity will 

almost double to 120,000 cans

investment and it will have 

the flexibility to 

produce multiple 

formats including 

150ml mini cans 

and 250ml 

slimline cans. 

With the 

latest 

announcement, 

CCE has 

invested 

more than 

£200million in 

its business 

since 2011. 

And Simon 

Baldry, 

managing 

director at CCE, said: “Our 

latest funding pledge shows 

once again our desire to invest 

significantly in the most 

innovative and efficient 

technologies available.” 

The news coincides with 

the results of independent 

research into the economic 

impact of Coca-Cola in GB. 

Led by eminent economist 

Professor Ethan Kapstein 

the socio-economic impact 

assessment revealed that 

every pound of value created 

by Coca-Cola supports an 

additional £8 elsewhere in the 

British economy – the 

equivalent of nearly 

£2.4 billion annually. The 

research also shows that 

Coca-Cola supports a further 

34,500 high-quality, skilled 

British jobs across the economy.

apprentice. Primarily, he will be 

shadowing members of the 

technical team in the 

workshop, developing his core 

engineering skills and learning

Investments will be made across factories including the Sidcup plant 

conveyor systems as well as 

attending college. 

“The majority of our team 

have been in engineering for 

over 30 years and it gives 

them a chance to pass on their 

knowledge to a younger 

generation,” says production

has launched a new 

certification mark service for

UK vision forum 

sees all areas 

Stemmer Imaging in 

conjunction with the 

European Imaging Academy 

has announced that an 

industrial vision technology 

forum will be held in the UK 

on 22 May. This will be 

based on the successful 

version held in Germany last 

year, which attracted more 

than 400 visitors. 

“This is likely to be the 

biggest event of its kind in the 

UK in 2014,” says Mark 

Williamson, director – 

corporate market development 

at Stemmer Imaging. “There 

will be a wide range of 

informative talks covering all 

aspects of machine vision, 

from introductory to advanced 

user level, with a number of 

parallel sessions so that 

visitors can choose to attend 

the blend of talks that best 

meet their needs. 

“The talks will focus on the 

latest technology and 

developments rather than 

specific products,” he 

continues. “At the same time, 

over 25 machine vision 

manufacturers are expected 

to exhibit, running hands-on 

demonstrations of hardware 

and software that visitors can 

dip in and out of between 

presentations.”

Full packing line is 

open day event hit 

Over 50 visitors attended 

an Open Day event at 

Pacepacker Services in March 

to see a complete bulk solids 

packing line. Designed to bag 

and palletise loose products 

including aggregates, food 

and animal feed, the 22sq 

metre line demonstrated the 

latest sack, box and crate 

handling technology. 

Working as an automation 

integrator, Pacepacker 

managed the entire project 

which featured equipment from 

a further five technology 

partners: Festo, Fanuc, Tascol 

Shore, Aetna and Lock 

Inspection. The turnkey system 

included weighing, inspection, 

bagging, palletising and stretch 

wrapping equipment, as well 

as the latest pneumatics 

technology used throughout 

the line. 

Dennis Allison, managing 

director of Pacepacker was 

delighted with the turn out 

which included producers and 

packers from overseas. “It’s 

not often that our customers 

get to see a full packing line at 

our manufacturing facility,” he 

says. “A highlight of the event 

was the first time viewing of 

Fanuc’s new generation 

palletiser which is stronger, 

faster and more compact than 

its predecessors.” 

Following the success of the 

event, a second open day is 

planned for June to showcase 

Pacepacker’s pick and place 

robot handling and assembly 

technology in association with 

Fanuc and Festo. Those 

looking to find out more about 

pick and place robots will see 

both Cartesian and delta style 

systems.

Widely respected

businessman Ronald 

Yates has died at the 

age of 86. 

Ron founded end of 

line equipment 

company Endoline 

Machinery in 1981 

and since that time 

has helped drive the 

company from designing and 

manufacturing small case 

taping machines to its position 

today as a leading 

international manufacturer of 

a wide portfolio of end-of-line 

The turnkey system featured equipment from six technology partners 

Ron Yates with two generations of his family at Endoline 

packaging machines and 

systems. 

While handing over the 

managing director reins to his 

son Alan in the 1990’s Ron 

took on the role of company 

secretary and, until 

recently, continued to 

help steer the company 

forward. The next 

generation of Yates’ 

now work at the 

company as Alan’s 

sons Richard, Andrew 

and Christopher run the 

production, quality, 

sales and customer 

services departments. 

Ron will be greatly missed by 

his family and friends, but also 

by the packaging industry for 

which he was an extremely 

effective champion.

NTS top seal flow wrapping 

machine to build on the 

success of its popular 

HTS model. 

The NTS is designed to 

provide enhanced versatility 

and, with its flexible modular 

construction, reduced

A three axis drive control 

for product flexibility is

GT5 tray sealer to adapt to 

any type of packing operation. 

This includes atmospheric 

sealing, MAP gas flushing, 

vacuum MAP sealing, skin

Jenton has licenced its 

patented uv lamp technology 

to MicroTek who is using it to 

treat opaque liquids such as 

milk and orange juice to 

substantially extend the shelf 

life of these products. 

And, because this is a lower 

temperature method, it does 

not change the taste due to 

less fouling. 

The lamp is powered by 

microwave energy instead of 

direct connection to 

electricity as seen in more 

conventional uv systems. 

This leads to higher 

efficiency in converting 

electricity to uv radiation. 

Jenton’s novel 

electrodeless high output, 

low pressure mercury lamps 

use pulsed uv predominantly 

at 254nm wavelength that 

exposes the product to 

pulsed uv radiation. Fluids 

passing through the system 

are kept turbulent to help 

with uv exposure. 

According to MicroTek’s 

managing director Allan 

Slater, using this process on 

milk has improved flavour, 

extended shelf life and 

lowered costs when 

compared to competing 

processes.

radiation is widely used for 

sterilisation of water, air and 

some surfaces but is only

applications. “One reason for 

this is the low penetration 

depth of uv in turbid or 

coloured fluids, however

opaque liquids.”

GIC is celebrating its 30 year 

anniversary with record sales. 

The company has recently 

installed several systems 

including a twin bagger for an 

instant potato product, a 

bullion plant to pack cash into 

bags for a well-known bank 

and a new volumetric filler for 

rice that is combined with a 

filler from All-Fill, and all 

operated via one, specially 

designed HMI. 

“Last year was our busiest, 

even in tough economic 

times,” explains GIC director 

Luke Murphy. “We sell mainly 

into the fresh produce sector 

however, bullion, hardware, 

frozen foods, powders, pulses 

and confectionary are also 

important to us.” 

Originally, the company 

offered electrical contracting to 

various industries and went on 

VFFS packaging machinery manufacturer GIC is enjoying record sales 

to build all the electrical panels 

used on Rose Forgrove 

packaging machines, before 

the Leeds-based company’s 

demise. 

In the 1990s, the company 

developed its own range of 

machinery including a vertical 

bag maker and linear weigher 

with emphasis on its VFFS 

machines. This range 

continues to be strengthened 

and today, the company 

boasts a UK operating 

machine base approaching

Knight Warner has ensured a 

handling system it devised 

with Nampak has achieved 

adequate supply of the right 

type of milk bottle, at the 

right time, in the correct 

orientation and undamaged 

at a large dairy in Northern 

Ireland. 

This handling system 

delivers HDPE bottles to the 

milk filling heads at speeds of 

up to 500 bottles a minute at 

the Pennybridge dairy in 

Ballymena. 

According to Colin Powell, 

technical director at Knight 

Warner, the key was in the 

integration of its patented 

‘stripping system’ in 

conjunction with the latest 

PLC technology and 

sophisticated safety systems. 

“This allowed us to provide 

a solution which met all the 

requirements of the dairy, 

along with the installation of 

the equipment into the 

minimum possible footprint,” 

he says. 

The installation includes 

de-baggers, conveyors and 

management information 

system interfaces. 

“Provision was made in the 

design to cater for the 

handling of our lightweight 

Infini bottle which reduces the 

weight of existing milk bottles 

by up to 20%,” explains 

Jamie Tinsley, commercial 

director at Nampak Plastics. 

The ability for remote access 

to the equipment allows 

continuous plant condition 

monitoring and produces 

efficiency performance data. 

It can also highlight alarm trips 

and fault codes, and also

Atwell Labellers’ bespoke 

offering to the daffodil market 

has seen the company deliver 

its ninth machine to 

Winchester Growers to cope 

with approximately 24 million 

bunches this season. 

Included in this number are 

the charity labels produced for 

Marie Curie currently running 

as a promotion throughout 

the UK. 

Six years ago Atwell was 

approached by Winchester 

Growers to design a machine 

and a label that could be 

applied automatically, and at 

speed, to a bunch of freshly 

picked daffodils. This was to 

replace the very labour 

intensive method of the 

previously used plastic. 

Atwell designed and 

supplied the first two 

machines back in 2008 which 

at the time, were only labelling 

about two million bunches of 

daffodils. As the product has 

been developed over the 

years however, the use of 

these labels has expanded 

following their adoption by the 

majority of major UK retailers 

as well as users in mainland 

Europe and the US. 

The label has been 

developed with the growers 

over the years to include a 

specific shape and size to 

handle a variety of bunches of 

daffodils. A specific material, 

varnish and adhesive for the 

product have also been 

developed along with a 

special adhesive pattern to 

allow the label to be applied 

around the bunch of daffodils 

without leaving any residue on 

the stems. This adhesive 

pattern also maximises 

machine application. 

This development also 

means that daffodils no longer

recession is now paying off. 

“We expanded our service 

team to allow our customers to 

keep running equipment when 

money was tight and there 

was no money for new ones 

and expanded the services 

available to our customers,” 

he says. “Indeed, we are still 

expanding the service and 

consumable side of our 

business as well as the core 

machinery side to ensure we 

give our customers everything 

they need.”

Success at dairies 

Yorkshire Packaging Systems 

(YPS) has seen an uplift in 

activity in the milk sector in 

the past few months with no 

fewer than five of its dairy 

systems being supplied – a 

record for the shrink wrapping 

systems company. 

This range is designed for 

independent dairies that 

require more flexibility and 

quicker changeover times on 

shorter runs compared to the 

large, multinational

Pouch handling is gentle 

Benefits of reduced packaging

visibility have seen pouch use 

soar on the continent with 

Cama developing packaging 

machinery, and robots, to 

ensure gentle product handling 

while maintaining high line 

efficiencies. 

One European installation at 

a major pet food manufacturer, 

for instance, involved Cama 

designing a solution with 

minimum product drop of the 

foil pouches. The full system 

unloads the pouches from 

transit crates direct from the 

warehouse, packs them into 

display cartons and then into 

corrugated cases ready for 

palletisation.

are fed into a robot loading 

buffering system comprising 

four individual cells with two 

axis robots unloading the 

pouches flat onto an infeed 

vision conveyor which detects 

the orientation and product 

availability. 

Minimum product drop was 

achieved by the style of preerected 

cartons formed on a 

triple head erecting machine 

and their positioning on 

the 45 degree angled 

feed conveyor to the 

loading cells. This carton 

position enables the 

pouches to be loaded 

with minimal drop, 

giving gentle handling 

and controlled loading 

accuracy for higher line 

efficiencies, especially over the 

more standard vertical loading 

systems available, says Cama. 

Delta robots pick and place 

640 pouches a minute into the 

awaiting cartons positioned on 

the angled conveyor. Filled 

cartons are closed within the 

system, then grouped and 

loaded into a wraparound 

case packing machine ready 

for palletisation. The line has 

been designed to handle up to 

720 pouches a minute with the 

capability of packing both 

individual and multi flavoured 

cartons with up to four 

different flavours. 

For one of the latest baby 

food projects, gentle handling 

and loading was key to the 

success in preventing product 

damage for high speed 

throughput of the flexible drinks 

pouch. Pouches are received 

at up to 240 a minute on 

customer upstream conveyors, 

four across and with narrow 

edge leading. By using three 

Cama Delta robots with vision 

systems, the pouches are 

picked and turned through 90 

degrees regardless of the 

position and orientation and 

placed broad side leading onto 

a single feed flat belt conveyor. 

With the pouches broadside 

leading, loading into the 

pocketed conveyor is 

minimised and by using a 

waterfall feed system, the 

pouches are gently positioned 

into pockets reducing any 

potential product damage. The 

loaded pockets are fed into the 

intermittent cartoning machine, 

where two cartons are loaded 

per cycle slowing the machine 

operation time. 

Filled cartons are then turned 

on edge and enter the Cama 

FW748 wraparound case 

packing machine which 

operates at 20 cases a minute. 

The complete line has been 

designed to handle different 

size pouches and pack them in 

single or flavoured packs of up 

to three different varieties with 

minimal size changeover times.

Compact sieve ensures product quality 

When Altro developed a new 

range of safety flooring a new 

sieving machine was required 

to meet its exact quality 

requirements. 

At Altro, recycled glass 

granules is one of the 

materials used to increase the 

hardness of the flooring while 

adding to its robust safety 

features. In addition, the use 

of recycled glass conforms to 

Altro’s sustainability plans. 

Before the glass is fed into the 

flooring, it is passed through a 

sieving system via a hopper 

where oversize particles are 

removed, leaving the fine 

material needed. Correct 

particle size material is then 

added to the product line.

Finex separators from Russell 

Finex eight years previously, 

Altro arranged an onsite trial 

for a 600mm diameter 

Russell compact sieve to be 

installed within the new 

processing line so its staff 

could monitor the effectiveness 

and suitability of the machine. 

Sieving recycled glass 

during the trial proved very 

successful and the purchasing 

decision was made. “The trial 

allowed us to put the machine 

through the toughest 

conditions and it needed to 

succeed to ensure that 

product quality would not be 

compromised,” says Richard

Congress takes place in the 

Congress Centre South 

(CCD Süd) at the Düsseldorf 

fairgrounds. 

This two-day event is 

directed at both non-profit 

organisations and industry and 

will highlight the topics of 

global food loss and food 

waste and explore the aspects 

involved. 

The SAVE FOOD initiative is 

a co-operation between the 

Food and Agriculture 

Organisation of the United 

Nations (FAO) and Messe 

Düsseldorf. It was originally 

launched in 2011 and is now 

being supported by the United 

Nations Environment 

Programme (UNEP).

Redesigned filler is future 

The Adelphi Group has 

redesigned its range of filling

System F is not just a tweak, 

it is a fundamental redesign of

Representing a complete

revamped and redeveloped

association SIBA. This means 

craft brewers are seeking

which can keep up with 

quickly changing demands, 

such as short runs or different 

pack formats, says Linx

Versatility and portability was 

the key purchasing factor for 

one craft brewer who invested 

in a Linx CJ400 continuous ink 

jet printer. This is described as 

an ideal solution for micro 

brewers as it can code both 

bottles and cans and it can 

also be moved easily between 

production lines, when required, 

as it only weighs 14.5kg. 

New equipment for smaller 

brewers has been developed 

to offer the flexibility required

developed a specially 

shaped solution to 

pack ground coffee 

and tea leaves – a 

‘coffee-pot’ shaped 

stand up pouch. The 

pouch comes with an 

integral filter, zipper 

closure system and 

corner valve insertion 

for pouring the freshly 

brewed coffee and tea. 

This pouch is made 

of high barrier flexible 

materials coupled with easy opening and 

reclosing features to allow hot water to be 

poured into the pouch 

and subsequently 

reclosed. The pouch

company who applies very short run, digitally 

printed shrink sleeves to beverage cans. 

Tintag allows its clients to interact in all parts 

of the shrink sleeve label design to create a

B&R Automation has enjoyed much success in the drinks market by meeting the needs of major 

players and their customers for increased outputs while simplifying operation and using less energy. 

Machinery Update reports 

Last year, Sidel celebrated its 30th year of 

PET bottle production by introducing a new 

range of blowing, filling, capping and 

labelling equipment – the Sidel Matrix. To 

optimise the performance of this new 

modular system design, Sidel spent a year 

evaluating some of the biggest automation 

suppliers on the market in search of a 

partner who could help bring the parts 

together into an integrated whole with the 

advanced features and performance its 

customers expect. 

A key goal of Sidel’s new modular Matrix 

system was to optimise the way the line 

operates as a whole. It recognised that this 

called for a single, fully integrated 

automation solution, which meant finding a 

global automation supplier able to offer 

versatile solutions that accommodated all 

machine types in addition to any planned 

future innovations. The biggest automation 

players in the market took part in a oneyear 

Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) 

evaluation. 

“The technical requirements for the new 

automation solution were very high,” 

explains Isabelle Maillot, vice president of 

product innovation at Sidel. “During the 

ESI evaluation, B&R offered the most 

suitable solutions, with autonomous 

ACOPOSmulti servo drives that were able

Succesful evaluation 

“B&R’s solutions scored successfully 

among 80 criteria of the ESI evaluation,” 

adds global sourcing manager David 

Dumouchel, “and easily met our most 

stringent requirements. Moreover, a 

selection of 90 different B&R models 

covers the needs of the whole range of 

Sidel Matrix machines.” 

The hard real-time capabilities of the 

POWERLINK network protocol, the high 

performance of the Automation PC – which 

allows seamless processing of both control 

and HMI tasks on the same hardware 

platform – as well as the exceptional level 

of integration achieved with the Automation 

Studio development tool were decisive 

factors in Sidel’s choice to equip the new 

Sidel Matrix machines with B&R systems, 

believes Simon Goodwin, general 

manager of B&R in the UK. 

To support Sidel in this new challenge, 

B&R assembled dedicated teams for 

training, testing and support in every 

country where Sidel has production 

facilities. The relationship between the 

Sidel and B&R teams evolved quickly as 

they collaborated to bring all of B&R’s 

innovative technologies to the Sidel 

machines. “With B&R always available for 

support and advice, Sidel retained full 

control of the machine development 

project and ensured that every line of code 

was written by Sidel engineers,” explains 

Goodwin. “This guarantees that Sidel’s 

technical staff has all the knowledge 

necessary to provide support, optimise 

processes and quickly develop new 

machine options on demand,” he says. 

For Sidel, another aspect of providing its 

customers optimal service was to make 

the new machines as easy as possible to 

maintain. The System Diagnostics 

Manager (SDM) tool that comes integrated

in each B&R X20 PLC gives 

Sidel easy access to detailed 

status information about each 

and every axis and I/O channel 

on its machines, either locally or 

remotely. Since SDM can be 

used in any web browser, Sidel 

Matrix users don’t need a 

special software tool or extra 

training to perform diagnostics. 

When it came to the Sidel 

Matrix design, Sidel divided the 

machines into smart mechatronic 

modules. The high performance 

of POWERLINK and the embedded 

openSAFETY protocol ensures seamless 

communication of both functional and 

safety data between all automation and 

drive components, both within individual 

modules and across the entire bottling line. 

Modular approach 

Thanks to this modular approach, 

Sidel teams based in Octeville, France, 

and Parma, Italy, were able to develop the 

blowing and the filling 

modules independently, 

resulting in a combined 

solution. At the 

equipment level, the 

modules interact 

through standardised 

interfaces. This allows 

each of them to evolve 

separately and still 

come together 

seamlessly, bringing 

new levels of 

performance to market 

significantly faster. 

“The cooperation 

between the Sidel and 

B&R technical teams 

was a key factor in the 

success of the Matrix 

project,” explains 

Thierry Deau, manager 

of automation 

innovation at Sidel. “With the help of the 

local B&R teams, we have made the B&R 

technology our own, and in this way, we 

can take full advantage of its distinctive 

features and pass on all the added value 

to our customers.” 

With the PLC and motion simulation 

tools provided in B&R’s Automation Studio 

development environment, Sidel was able 

to develop and test the new machines 

largely in the comfort of the office.

Nevertheless, the bottling line 

manufacturer tested critical functions over 

millions of cycles on actual machines to 

ensure maximum reliability. 

And B&R worked closely with Krones 

when it developed the third generation of 

its Contiform series of PET stretch blow 

moulding machine. 

This machine features excellent 

production output, increased precision and 

freedom in the stretch-forming process, 

while still reducing power 

consumption significantly. 

The bottling specialist 

achieved this 

development leap by 

switching from pneumatic 

and belt drives to an 

electric direct drive 

solution and an integrated 

drive solution based on 

B&R technology. 

With up to 36 blow 

moulding stations, the 

Contiform 336 rotary 

stretch blow moulding 

machine can achieve an 

output of 81,000 PET 

containers an hour. 

The bottle preforms are 

heated to a temperature 

of 100 to 120deg C in 

an infrared linear oven 

and then guided by a 

starwheel into the aluminium blow mould. 

As soon as the mould closes, a stretch 

rod is inserted in the neck of the preform to 

stretch it axially while applying up to 40 bar 

of blowing pressure. This presses the sides 

of the preform against the interior wall of 

the mould to shape the bottle, which is 

then collected by an output starwheel. 

This method is used to produce about 

300 billion bottles per year. “With this 

number growing rapidly, bottling plants are 


demanding more and more 

performance from their 

machines but all this 

performance must not come 

at the expense of 

sustainability,” says 

B&R’s Goodwin. 

With this revamp of the 

Contiform series, the main 

challenge was balancing the 

top priorities of maximum 

output with minimum power 

consumption. 

To achieve this jump, the 

engineering team replaced the belt drives 

with direct drives and used torque motors 

that provide up to 2,300 Nm of torque. 

Servo Drive Control 

These motors are controlled using Krones’ 

SDC (Servo Drive Control) solution based 

on B&R technology, which the company 

has used across multiple divisions for over 

five years. The SDC solution allows an 

unlimited number of axes to be coupled via 

POWERLINK in a wide range of 

topologies. The inverters come from 

B&R’s ACOPOSmulti series, with an 

X20 CPU acting as the controller. 

The great leap in performance seen in 

the new Contiform generation isn’t 

explained by the torque motors alone. Only 

by combining this innovation with the move 

from pneumatic to electromagnetic control 

of the stretch system were the Krones 

engineers in a position to achieve the 

output required. In place of pneumatic 

drives, tubular linear motors now control 

the movement of the stretch rods in the 

blow stations. 

The motor was designed for operation 

on a standard three-phase ACOPOS 

drive from B&R with a DC bus voltage of 

800 V. The B&R ACOPOSdrive also 

evaluates and linearises the signal from 

the Hall sensor. 

Krones says the programming involved 

here is not to be underestimated. 

For the inverters controlling the linear 

motors, Krones selected B&R’s 

ACOPOSremote with IP65 protection 

together with a B&R X20 CPU to provide 

control for the blowing module. To 

provide valve control and monitor the 

blowing pressure, IP67 I/O modules are 

connected to the controller’s second 

POWERLINK interface.

gets automated 

Independent Wiltshire brewers Wadworth has automated its 

cask labelling operations at the Victorian tower brewery in 

Devizes with the installation of a 400 series print and apply 

labeller from Logopak. It is part of Wadworth’s commitment to 

combining a tradition of craft with modern production techniques. 

This 410 TK keg/cask labeller replaces a manual labelling 

operation, increasing efficiency and ensuring accurate label 

application. The 410 prints and applies two label sizes onto 

multiple products – including two cask sizes – at speeds of up to 

six casks a minute. 

An on-board library of product data accommodating multiple 

template designs is stored on the labeller with each being 

recalled using a large touch screen display. Each label template 

is displayed on this screen to help operators. 

Variable data such as shelf life, production date, Julian date 

codes and best before dates are automatically calculated and 

printed on the label. 

The labeller is supplied in a stainless steel enclosure with 

pneumatic trap-door to protect it from the harsh production 

environment in the brewery. This, says Logopak, helps to ensure 

the 10-15 year lifespan that is synonymous with Logopak products.

Bottle wrapper launch 

Yorkshire Packaging Systems has introduced the EPB bottle 

wrapper designed for wrapping trayless bottles in a variety of 

formats at medium speeds. 

Designed for the independent bottler, the machine achieves 

speeds of up to 10 packs a minute in a range of formats and, 

says the company, provides the perfect combination of speed 

and flexibility. 

Set up is easy, as are format changes, as no change parts

a minute at its Rugby beverage

1620 UHS is that it is over 40% faster 

than its existing printers, allowing 

operators greater flexibility to run 

faster or print more content, 

increasing the line speed by 25% to 

150 metres a minute and increasing 

the size of the print character from 

7x4 to 7x5, and all without 

compromising print quality. 

The integrated core consolidates the

Krones, so flexibility in the production 

process is an imperative. 

Learning the lessons from ‘big’ brewing 

technology and using them for making 

speciality beers in small batches, Krones 

has developed the CombiCube system. 

It is designed for smaller breweries with 

up to 250,000 hectolitres of beer and 

ones that handle a diverse range of types 

and seasonal products. However, large 

industrial-scale breweries can also use 

this system to brew small batches of their 

speciality beers, or as a pilot installation 

or a mobile brewery. 

This modular system permits a 

customised design configuration and can 

be expanded easily. The type and 

number of vessels can be selected to suit 

individual requirements. Krones believes 

that with CombiCube, breweries have an 

option for making top quality products 

using different brewing processes and 

high volume variance.

its champagne is not impaired during 

automatic cartoning by installing a special 

‘stress-free’ system from Schubert at its 

winery in Rheims, France. 

The system packs 75 cl bottles into two 

different box sizes – the smaller box 

contains two cardboard inserts holding 

three bottles each while the larger design 

has space for four inserts. 

“We now package our champagne with 

higher output and flexibility,” explains 

Henri Darré, technical director at the 

French winery. 

The TLM system achieves an output of 

150 bottles a minute and has replaced a 

mono-format system with an output of 

100 bottles a minute. It consists of eight 

sub-machines and integrates a product 

belt for the incoming bottles, a 

transmodule section for the boxes and 

another section for the carton inserts. 

A TLM-F3 robot removes two flat 

blanks for the carton inserts from the 

magazine and transfers them to a 

TLM-F2 which erects them and places 

them into the size plate of the waiting 

transmodule. The tool fixes the carton 

inserts without using glue.

moves as a chain whose speed is 

controlled by the product flow for the 

‘pick-and-place’ process. 

Following the proven counterdirectional 

running principle, the bottles 

reach the picker stations from the 

opposite direction. Photocells detect their 

position on the product belt and then six 

four-axle TLM-F4 robots pick up the 

bottles individually, tilt them by 90 

degrees horizontally and place them in 

the carton inserts in the required 

alignment – ‘head to foot’. 

The TLM system arranges the bottle 

formations in the carton insert without 

using a grouping chain. This process 

differs fundamentally from conventional 

solutions which translates to significant 

advantages in protecting the 

product, says Schubert. This is 

because the mechanical 

system of a grouping chain 

can stress the products. 

Schubert prevented this 

potential hazard to the elegant 

bottle cover by using the TLM-F44 

picker stations for Veuve Clicquot. In 

addition, the tools of the TLM-F4 are 

constructed in such a way that the 

suction surface avoids the label. There is 

also no longer impact or direct contact 

during the rest of the process to ensure 

that the champagne leaves the machine 

in the same condition it was fed in.

Moving transmodules one after another 

is just one of the many possibilities offered 

by the patented TLM components. Each of 

the single-axle robots can move on the rail 

section autonomously which means the 

packaging processes can be easily 

decoupled, such as for Veuve Clicquot. 

Another key benefit of the transmodule 

is that it allows for a smaller machine 

design – this system is only 3 metres wide.

palletising machine with level compensation that 

processes up to 500 layers per hour. And, as it 

has a low-level pack feed this performance

The reason this machine can work so fast is 

that there is a cross conveyor built into the front 

end of the palletiser which can be opened. 

A barrier construction is used in place of the 

previously used integrated bar construction. This 

means that after placing the last layer onto the 

pallet the cross conveyor no longer has to be 

raised and then wait there until the finished 

pallet has been discharged from the system. 

Instead, the cross conveyor can travel down to 

table level before and the new layer picked up 

during the change of pallet which considerably 

increases the palletising speed. 

The Innopal PB1NF also has all the benefits 

associated with a low-level pack feed on 

palletisers. One of these is that neither a platform 

nor inclined or spiral conveyor are needed which 

has the advantage of reducing investment costs

Thermal coder offers larger print area 

Walsall Engineering has provided a space 

saving conveyor solution for Thomas Hardy at 

its Kendal site following the installation of a new 

shrinkwrapper. The company’s experience in 

plant layout design saw it modify the bottle 

conveyors feeding the new machine at the 

contract packer. 

Walsall Engineering’s solution involved the 

design and installation of a new bottle conveying 

system, from the labeller discharge to the infeed 

of the shrinkwrapper, with a bottle recirculation at 

the heart of it. The main advantage of the 

recirculation system was to provide a compact 

bottle accumulation solution where space was at 

a premium. 

The end of line packaging system was soon 

producing good levels of production over a wide 

range of bottle sizes with frequent changeovers.

Vision reduces line stoppages 

A vision system developed by Olmec UK 

is checking that the correct beer kegs 

are present in the correct orientation 

on the filling lines at Molson Coors 

brewery. 

The system inspects the special filling 

tube in the top of the keg, known 

as the spear, to determine whether 

the keg can proceed for 

sterilisation and filling. About 2.5% 

line stoppages are directly 

attributable to attempting to fill the 

wrong keg types, since trying to fit 

a particular filling head to the 

wrong spear can cause significant 

damage. 

Introducing the vision system 

has reduced this figure to 0.5%. 

Molson’s filling line is used for a 

wide variety of brands and 

therefore many different keg types 

are used. A GigE vision camera 

with red ring light illumination is 

positioned above the filling line to image 

the tops of the kegs as they pass by. 

Since there are several different keg 

diameters, the system is set up to record 

an image every 100ms, ensuring 

that an image of the spear will be 

recorded regardless of the barrel 

diameter.

Following its success at Propack Asia 

last year, Kliklok is continuing to 

expand its presence in the region by 

supplying a new Certiwrap 

wraparound cartoning line to 

F&N Dairies in Thailand. 

Here, the fully integrated cartoning 

system is handling multiple cans of 

flavoured milk. 

Cans arrive in a single lane, so 

Kliklok designed a ‘petal starwheel’ 

device to split this into two lanes 

which then guide the products into a 

scroll infeed system which collates 

the cans in the required 2x2 and 

2x3 formats. 

Once the groups of cans are 

cartoned, finished packs travel 

through a right-angle transfer and 

flap closing unit which closes the 

minor and lower major flaps to form a 

‘gusset’ to enable secure product 

retention.

a selectable 1-to-4 lane diverger 

system to take the finished packs 

from a single lane, and divide them 

into up to four lanes, ready for

Controlling cheese cuts 

Newtech has updated its extruded cheese cutting equipment with an open-architecture machine automation 

controller from Omron, resulting in a range of benefits to itself and end users alike 

When Newtech decided to 

bring its code development 

operations in-house, its control 

engineer was keen to explore 

the latest technologies 

available, which led to a 

complete review of the control 

technology it used. 

“We were looking for a 

controller that could offer ease 

of programmability as well as 

a modern, compact design to 

help us enhance our product 

offering,” explains sales 

manager at Newtech Phil 

Waters. “We were also looking 

for reliability and, having 

worked with Omron for over 

10 years, we felt comfortable 

with the quality and reliability 

of its products. 

“We needed a programming 

environment that would allow 

for fast configuration, 

programming and offline 

simulation, owing to the tight 

delivery timescales demanded 

by many of our customers and 

Omron’s Sysmac NJ controller 

offered us all of this,” he 

explains. 

The Sysmac NJ, which 

forms part of the Sysmac 

automation platform, provides 

synergy with the whole Omron

runs PLCopen motion function 

blocks, and adheres to the

because the controller uses 

these open technologies that 

are driven by end users and 

widely employed through 

industry, a control engineer 

should immediately understand 

the technologies, making 

migration to the new controller 

easy. The resulting code 

should also be more reliable, 

better structured, and therefore 

more readable, which means 

lower maintenance costs 

throughout the life of the 

machine it is controlling. 

The first cutting machine in 

the Newtech range to benefit 

from the control upgrade was 

the Autosonic-E machine which 

is designed to accurately and 

consistently cut extruded 

cheese products. “The 

simplicity of the Sysmac Studio 

programming environment 

enabled us to design, 

programme, implement and 

test the machine within just a 

few weeks and helped us to 

ensure delivery of the machine 

within the customer’s tight 

timescale of only nine weeks,” 

says Waters. 

Communication 

Communication between the 

robot and the Sysmac NJ is 

via the DeviceNet protocol. 

“We use DeviceNet because it 

is a well-defined protocol used 

extensively in the industry – it 

is compatible with most control 

devices offering seamless 

communication,” said Waters. 

Omron is also able to 

provide local support across 

the globe. “This is a good 

selling point for us, in light of 

the fact that the first of our new 

Autosonic-E machines was 

destined for Tasmania. It is an 

added benefit that we can now 

offer a machine with remote 

diagnostics and troubleshooting 

features. We can connect to 

equipment anywhere in the 

world, via the internet, from our 

offices in the UK.” 

Newtech believes that the 

remote diagnostic capabilities 

will give it a real competitive 

advantage, because many 

food producers are not as 

self-sufficient – in terms of 

engineering support – as some

Any machine that has EMC sensitive electrical or electronic components must meet the requirements of the 

EMC Directive, unless they are fixed installations. Paul Laidler explains what constitutes a fixed installation 

To comply with the Machinery 

Directive, any machine that has 

EMC sensitive electrical or 

electronic components must 

meet the requirements of the 

EMC Directive (2004/108/EC) 

and the only machines not 

subjected to this conformity 

assessment are fixed 

installations. 

However, while fixed 

installations are excluded from 

some of the requirements of the 

EMC Directive, and are not 

assessed by testing to 

harmonised standards, they must 

still meet the essential protection 

requirements. They must also be 

installed applying good 

engineering practices, which 

have to be documented and the 

documentation held by the 

‘designated Responsible 

Person’, who remains 

responsible for the installation for 

as long as it is in operation. 

One key area of confusion is 

what actually constitutes a 

fixed installation. 

Fixed installation 

The European Commission’s 

Guide for the EMC Directive 

2004/108/EC (February 8, 2010) 

defines a fixed installation as “a 

particular combination of several 

types of apparatus and, where 

applicable, other devices, which 

are assembled, installed and 

intended to be used permanently 

at a predefined location”. The 

guide goes on to state that ‘fixed 

installation’ is thus an allencompassing 

term that applies 

to all electrical installations that 

have been constructed with the 

intention of being permanent. 

The guide also states that the 

term ‘fixed installation’ also 

applies to large machines, such 

as production lines. This is where 

many manufacturers and owners 

of machinery fall down as they 

presume that they have a fixed 

installation and therefore are 

exempt from the requirements 

of the EMC Directive. 

Often the presumption is that if 

machinery is screwed to the floor 

it can be considered a fixed 

installation. However, if such a 

machine, or assembly of 

machines into a production line, 

is moved and modified at any 

time, it ceases to become a 

fixed installation. 

Misunderstanding 

It is therefore very rare that 

something that is presumed to be 

a fixed installation actually is and 

we regularly see this 

misunderstanding when we 

make site visits. For example, a 

machine that is part of the fabric 

of a building, such as a power 

press (where the foundations of 

the building have been adapted), 

would be considered a fixed 

installation, but more common 

assembly lines, which can be 

reconfigured at any time are not. 

The Provision and Use of 

Work Equipment Regulations 

1998 (PUWER) describes what 

an employer needs to do to 

protect employees in the 

workplace. Section 10 states that 

“every employer shall ensure that 

an item of work equipment has 

been designed and constructed 

in compliance with any essential 

requirements”. 

For machinery owners, they 

must ensure that the equipment 

which their employees use is 

EMC compliant. For example, if 

the control system of a machine 

experiences electromagnetic 

interference it may malfunction 

and create a dangerous situation. 

Conversely, if the electrical and 

electronic systems fitted to a 

machine generate a high level of

Executive considers that “if it is 

reasonably practicable to carry 

out testing for immunity to

Best practice 

Despite what EMC compliance 

is, or is not, required for true 

fixed installations, the reality is 

that these machines could still 

electromagnetically interfere or 

be interfered with by other 

machinery, potentially creating 

a health and safety hazard. 

A best practice approach 

would be to err on the side of 

caution and conduct onsite 

pre-compliance EMC tests for 

machinery, even if it could 

possibly fall within the fixed 

installation definition. While full 

compliance is not required, such 

test results would prove a 

machine is not giving out 

electromagnetic interference, nor 

is it susceptible to such. 

For manufacturers of 

machinery, they may wish to 

consider the independent support 

of a Notified Body to prove due 

diligence. For most machinery, 

the Responsible Person (the 

manufacturer or their authorised 

representative) can self-certify a 

product’s conformity. However, 

for higher risk machinery, the 

Responsible Person has to follow 

a different conformity assessment 

procedure that requires the direct 

involvement of an accredited 

Notified Body to verify 

independently the product’s 

compliance and in some cases 

the manufacturer’s quality and 

manufacturing system.
