Three Point Club
More Than Just a Great Name
With an appropriate name representing both
the basketball shot and the trident wielded
by Triton, the Three Point Club is an
organization where all members of the San
Clemente High School Basketball
community – players, coaches, parents,
teachers, administrators, local residents and
business owners – come together as a
support system for the boys' basketball
program
The club is involved in just about every
aspect of Triton Basketball except, of
course, coaching and playing the games.
Foremost among these initiatives is the
financial support the Three Point Club
provides to the basketball program through
its fundraising efforts. Capistrano Unified
School District, like most school districts in
California, provides little money for athletic
programs. That leaves it to the teams
themselves to generate the funds necessary
to compete.
For Triton Basketball that means nearly
$70,000 must be raised to fund program
operations for 2015-16. It's such an
important part of the Three Point Club's
work that there is a page on its website
devoted exclusively to fundraising:
http://www.tritonbasketball.com/
fundraising.html
But the Three Point Club's work doesn't
stop with fundraising. It provides a wide
range of services to the basketball program
in order to keep costs down while enhancing
the players' experience..
Among the efforts in which the Three
Point Club is involved, besides publishing
this game program/media guide, are
managing the snack bar for all home games,
organizing transportation for away games,
coordinating pre-game varsity team meals at
team parent homes before home games,
running the Annual Basketball Awards
Banquet, hosting the Annual Summer
Barbecue, coordinating the Team Store,
providing a team parent for each division,
facilitating game support services such as
scorekeeping, statisticians, photo/video and
intermission entertainment, and running the
program's previously mentioned website
and social media efforts.
Last season the Three Point Club helped
put together the team's 50 th Anniversary
Celebration, including introduction of the
All-50 Team, the 50 greatest players in
SCHS history, who are honored with a
poster in this publication. In 2008, the
Three Point Club recognized a need and
converted an old coach's office into a topnotch
varsity team room. And next year the
organization plans to hold its inaugural Tip
Off Classic Golf Tournament, both as a
fundraiser and more importantly as a means
of building a sense of community among
7
Triton Basketball supporters.
Finally, it's important to note there are no
membership fees or enrollment forms to be
part of the Three Point Club. If you are a
supporter of Triton Basketball, you're
already part of the club. To contact the
Three Point Club and find out how you can
be more involved, send an email to
GETTING THINGS DONE – Organizing Triton Basketball's Annual Senior Night is just one of the
many responsibilities of the Three Point Club.

TritonBasketball.com:
“No way.” That's become the universal
response when interested parties take a look
at the Google Analytics stats showing that
TritonBasketball.com, the official website of
SCHS Boys' Basketball, draws nearly 350,000
visitors per year.
Even webmaster John Hauser did a
double take the first time he saw the site's
daily visitor count soar above a thousand. “I
think it was the first day we posted and
announced player profiles were online for
the 2013-14 teams,” he said. “We thought
we'd see a small surge, but were really
amazed as the numbers just kept growing
until we watched the ticker go into four
figures sometime after 11 o'clock that night.”
Since then, the critically acclaimed website
has averaged nearly 1,000 visitors per day,
A WEALTH OF INFORMATION – Here's the
home page of TritonBasketball.com as it
appeared in early November during the SCHS
Boys' Basketball Program's annual fundraising
campaign.
with a new peak of more than 3,400
viewers in a single day occurring in
February 2015 after OC Varsity referred its
readers to TritonBasketball.com for the
“best preview” of the CIF Playoff game
last February between the Tritons and
Tustin High School.
Steve Breazeale of the San Clemente
Times has called it “next level, without a
doubt.” On three different occasions the
SoCal Hoops basketball message board has
had post strings initiated about the high
quality of the site. And after ranking
Orange County student sections last year,
OC Sidelines said it probably wouldn't be
fair to other schools to do a similar ranking
of OC basketball websites.
“TritonBasketball.com is without a doubt
the finest high school basketball website in
at least Orange County, and probably
beyond,” said Tim Mann, 2014-15 president
of the Three Point Club, the official
booster organization for SCHS Boys'
Basketball. “I've personally looked at many
others, either trying to get information
about opponents, or just to see what else is
out there.”
The Three Point Club (TPC) operates
the website, and it was Mann's predecessors
at the helm, 2013-14 Co-Presidents Tim
Crankshaw and Michael Darnold, who
approached Hauser in the spring of 2013
about volunteeting to revamp the basketball
program's somewhat dormant domain.
Hauser was an award-winning journalist
early in his career and had previously put
together a small website for locally based
club basketball teams.
“We basically said let's take a look at the
football program's newly redesigned
website and see if we can do anything that's
even close. I think we succeeded in that,
and more,” Darnold said.
Since the summer of 2013, Triton
Basketball.com has posted more than a
thousand articles, over 7,500 photos and
dozens of hours of video. There has been a
same-day recap of nearly every game in
every division. Game programs have been
made available online. Scores and schedules
are updated on a timely basis, usually on
game day. Schedules for the 2015-16 season
were posted in May of 2015, months earlier
than they had been available historically.
But all the content in the world, isn't any
good if no one knows it's there. According
to Crankshaw, part of the strategy always
has been to make the website the
communication hub of the basketball
program. Behind the scenes, an entire email
8
With More Than 300,000 Annual Viewers, It's
Not Your Average HS Basketball Website
system based on the TritonBasketball.com
domain keeps key constituents informed and
directs them to the site for detailed
information. An active social media presence
on Facebook (SCTritonBasketball) and
Twitter (@SCTritonHoops) also links
followers to the website for the latest
updates on the program.
If it all seems like a lot of effort for a high
school basketball team, the Three Point Club
points to a three-part mission outlined for
the domain when the redesign began: 1)
Inform and entertain those who follow the
program; 2) Promote any players who may
have the opportunity to play at the next level;
and 3) Monetize the website by building its
audience to the point that it is a highly viable
medium for local advertisers.
“Like all high school sports, the basketball
program relies on community support to
fund its operation. With Triton Basketball.com
we are able to offer real, tangible
numbers that should translate into customers
for businesses who choose to advertise on
our website,” said Joe Spurgeon, vice
president of program development for the
boosters club.
TritonBasketball.com did not begin
accepting advertising until this year. Hauser
explained that it was mostly by intent. “We
wanted to have proof of concept in hand
before we asked sponsors to spend their
valuable advertising dollars with us,” he
added. “Now I think it's perhaps one of the
best advertising values in town.”
Businesses interested in advertising on
TritonBasketball.com can contact the TPC at
advertising@tritonbasketball.com.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE PLAYERS – Every Triton
player and every one of their games is covered
on the website, whose goal is to inform,
entertain and promote the SCHS Boys'
Basketball program.

One of my earliest basketball memories of
my son, Dylan, who will be a senior on this
year's Triton Varsity, occurred when he was
just over two years old. We were returning
from a family vacation on Maui and on final
approach to LAX. United Airlines was
playing a video highlighting the various
tourist attractions in the Los Angeles area.
When Dylan, who had been carefully
buckled in for landing, saw the Lakers on the
screen, he somehow immediately popped up,
standing in his seat with his arms raised and
screaming at the top of his lungs, “Shaq.”
The other passengers erupted into laughter
as my son beamed with joy.
Since the moment he first posted up with
his back to the Fisher-Price basket,
emulating the moves being made by the
Laker center on the family room TV, the
game of basketball has brought him an
immense amount of happiness. He and his
teammates, from an early age, wanted
nothing more than to play basketball as
Tritons. I am blessed as president of the
Three Point Club to have this opportunity to
thank those who made this possible.
Traditionally, this game program/media
guide represents the culmination of the
TPC's fundraising efforts. Advertising in this
publication, as well as the Adopt-A-Player
sponsorships listed herein, provide the vast
majority of funding for Triton Basketball.
Once again, the community's response has
been heart-touching. And we thank you
from the bottom of it.
This year, we introduced our new
Corporate Sponsorship Program and
advertising on our critically acclaimed
website, TritonBasketball.com. These
mediums and our participating sponsors
represent a much-appreciated look to the
future of Triton Basketball fundraising.
Of course, none of this would be
possible without an extremely talented and
dedicated corps of parent volunteers who
make it all happen. They are led by the TPC
Board of Directors: Craig Birmingham, vice
president of finance; Mary Ellen Butler, vice
president of special events and volunteer
services; Amaury Medrano, vice president
of support services; and Joe Spurgeon, vice
president of program development. This
group began its work in May to ensure the
success of the 2015-16 season.
You are holding the most tangible result
of these efforts. The 2015-16 issue of
Hoops, the official game program/media
guide of Triton Basketball, is the handiwork
of Joe Spurgeon, who served as its
executive editor through a comprehensive
redesign process. While you'll see the final
results about the same time we do, we
believe it may turn out to be arguably the
finest high school basketball media guide in
the county. For the second consecutive year,
Triton parent Desiree Nelson coordinated
our program advertising. And Mary Crapo,
the originator of Adopt-a-Player at SCHS,
once again led our player-sponsorhip
program with strong assists from Kelley
Birmingham and Tina Moran.
Craig Birmingham exemplifies the
volunteer spirit by fitting his board
responsibilities around an arduous business
travel schedule, often approving team
expenditures from thousands of miles away.
Not only that, he is already at work
organizing Triton Basketball's inaugural Tip
Off Classic Golf Tournament, which will
be played in the fall of 2016.
With our Spirit Wear program being run
by a husband-and-wife duo who work for
Nike and Hurley, respectively, we are pretty
confident we will have some of the bestdressed
fans around. Brian and Jennifer
Bang did, well, a bang up job getting
everyone clad in red and black. This
includes our very special “bling-alicious”
offerings for the ladies. And the Triton bling
doesn't stop there, as Amaury Medrano
shared his expertise in the jewelry industry
to make Triton Basketball keychains,
earrings, pendants and charms available to
San Clemente fans. I would suggest you
check with the Triton Snack Bar as soon as
possible, while supplies last.
Speaking of the Triton Snack Bar, Mary
Ellen Butler, now in her third year as its
coordinator, may prove to be tough to
replace aftr her son Aidan graduates this
9
year. She also has run our annual awards
banquet and has just generally been an
outstanding go-to person when something
needs to be done and done right. But to
make sure the torch gets passed, she'll be
shadowed and assisted this year by Debby
Mircheff and Carol VanGinkel as co-snack
bar coordinators and Jennifer Chin as cobanquet
coordinator.
Debby is also among those making sure
this great season is memorialized by serving
as the program's photography coordinator.
She organized our annual Photo Day with
Kelly Mitchell of Action Sports Photography,
which resulted in a great majority
of the photos seen in this program. She will
continue to work with him and other,
mostly parent-volunteer, photographers
throughout the season to capture all of the
special moments. Junior parent Shannon
Banks and freshman parent Christy Sherrell
will ensure Senior Night on February 11 is
among those special moments.
Now in her third year as video
coordinator, Kelly Paterson will provide for
all games to be recorded for coaching
purposes. But she didn't work her way into
the volunteer post by producing game tape.
Her highlight video of the 2012-13 Triton
Frosh, which debuted at that season's
banquet, is epic, leading to her being asked
to make sure all divisions have similar reels.
Craig Birmingham (varsity), Andrew Varos
(junior varsity), Larry and Joelle Dunnwald
(sophomore), and Paul Melby (freshman)
already have stepped up as videographers
for those teams.
Even on this eve of the 2015-16 season,
as this volume of Hoops goes to press,
there is still a lot of work to be done in
more than 150 volunteer roles in order to
make this year a success. And while times
have changed, and this program is actually
produced on a digital printer rather than a
press, there is one thing we can always count
one. From verifying contact information at
our Tip-Off Meeting to cleaning up after
our Season-End Banquet and all of the
scorekeeping, stats, web reporting, etc. in
between, the Triton Basketball community
never fails to deliver for the coaches and
players we love.
And while playing at an even six feet tall
during his senior season, Dylan is far more
likely to go to the basket on a cross-over
dribble than any of the post moves he
modeled as a toddler. he and his teammates
are grateful nonetheless for the generous
community support which allows them to
pursue their hoop dreams as San Clemente
Tritons. Those dreams include a 2016 South
Coast League championship. Let's 'defend
the coast.'

Pop, Pop & Pop
Exploring the Other
Branch of the Popovich
Coaching Tree
Last April, when Mike Budenholzer of the
Atlanta Hawks was named 2015 NBA
Coach of the Year, there was renewed
interest in the coaching tree of Gregg
Popovich, the Hall of Fame leader of the
San Antonio Spurs. Closer to home,
another branch of the Popovich coaching
tree was bearing fruit, as San Clemente
High School's Marc Popovich led his
Tritons to their second league championship
in three years – a significant
achievement considering the program
previously had not won a title since
notching its first 38 years earlier.
With Marc Popovich's success, the
inevitable question began “popping” up
again. What's the connection between the
local high school coach and five-time NBA
champion Gregg Popovich.
“I'm glad to see the family business is
doing well,” quipped the normally deadpan
Spurs coach.
When asked, SCHS Assistant Varsity
Coach Duwayne Horn, either jokingly or
misinformed, indicated that Gregg is
Marc's uncle. The truth is there is no family
relationship, though there is a strong
connection among the Popoviches dating
back more than four decades.
Marc's father, Steve Popovich, played
college basketball for Wyoming, and many
times competed against Gregg, who
attended the Air Force Academy. During
this time, Steve was featured in a Sports
Illustrated photograph in which he had the
unenviable task of guarding the greatest
scorer of all time, UCLA's Lew Alcindor,
who later changed his name to Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar. Fortunately for Popovich,
NCAA rules at the time prohibited
dunking.
After graduation, Steve and Gregg
continued to battle while competing for
club teams in the Serbian National
Federation. Then, as they settled into their
adult lives, they remained in contact as
both took head coaching positions in
Southern California – Steve at Marina High
BROTHERS ON THE COURT – While there is no familial connection, Hall of Fame Coach Gregg
Popovich (left) and Steve Popovich, recently retired from a successful 40-year career coaching
Orange County high school and junior college basketball, share a bond forged while competing
against each other that has lasted to this day.
School in Huntington Beach and Gregg at
Pomona-Pitzer College.
To this day, the bond remains between
Steve and Gregg, with the NBA coach at
times hosting the San Clemente
Popoviches at games in both Los Angeles
(Lakers and Clippers) and San Antonio.
Even there, the staff isn't quite sure what
the connection is. “It's really quite
something when we show up at will call to
pick up our tickets in San Antonio,” Steve
said. “As soon as I give our name
everyone snaps to attention and they really
roll out the red carpet for us.”
Steve explained that the Popovich
surname is common in the Serbian comcommu
midwest
14
munity. “If you go to parts of the midwest,
Indiana or Illinois, for example, there are
probably just about as many Popoviches as
there are Smiths or Joneses,” he said.. The
nickname “Pop” also is shared by the three
coaches.
One of the longest-serving OC high
school coaches when after 19 years he
stepped down at Marina in 1994 to accept a
coaching position at Saddleback College,
Steve lists among the highlights of his
career coaching future NCAA champion
(1992, Duke) and NBA first-round draft
pick (12 th overall, Dallas Mavericks)
center/forward Cherokee Parks. “We had a
really good run there for seven or eight
years

years before that, too,” he said.
He reminisced about driving home after a
day of teaching to pick up his family and
drive them back to Huntington Beach for
games. “Not sure I could do that in today's
traffic.”
And Marc remembers fondly sitting at
the end of the bench and watching his dad
coach. Today, the tables are somewhat
turned, as Marc affectionately describes his
father as “that tall gentleman sitting in the
stands glowering at me.”
In actuality, Steve is quite proud that his
son decided to get into coaching. “He could
have done anything he wanted. He's smart,
has a great memory, a great voice. I'm really
happy that he found something he really
loves to do in coaching.,” he said.
But San Clemente almost never had its
Pop. Following the 1991-92 season, Steve
accepted a position in Aurora, Colo., which
would have meant Marc would never have
graduated from SCHS or returned to coach
his alma mater. As fate would have it, the
soft real estate market at the time prevented
the family from selling its home and
relocating. So they never left, and the rest is
Popovich history.
Steve hung up his whistle after the 2014-
15 season, completing his 40-year coaching
run with posts at both Saddleback and
Orange Coast College. Marc said one of the
highlights of his coaching career thus far is
coaching with his dad for a year at
Saddleback.
HEAD COACH'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the 2015-16
Triton Basketball Season
By Marc Popovich, Head Coach
On behalf of the entire San Clemente Triton Boys' Basketball Program, I'd
like to welcome you to our 2015-16 season. The coaching staff, players,
boosters club and administration have worked extremely hard to make the
Triton Basketball Progam one of excellence and we hope to prove that to
you this season.
The program is dedicated to the achievement of our young men on and
off the court. As a staff, we emphasize the following traits for our student
athletes to have: teamwork, discipline, commitment, respect, perseverance
and collective responsibility. We use these traits to help each player and team
reach their full potential.
Each student athlete is committed and dedicated to giving their full effort
in the classroom and community as well as on the basketball court. The
coaching staff is grateful for the opportunity to use basketball as a teaching
tool for the game of life.
It is with great honor that I welcome you back to another exciting season
of basketball. On behalf of the entire Triton Basketball family, enjoy our
games this season and thank you for your support.
Marc Popovich
HEAD COACH
Now the longest tenured and winningest head coach in San Clemente High School Boys’ Basketball
history, Marc Popovich is in his ninth season at the helm of the Tritons. His teams have made the
CIF Playoffs in each of the last seven years. He is the ninth boys’ basketball head coach in the
school’s 51-year history.
San Clemente has won league championships in two out of the last three seasons under Popovich,
with the 2012-13 title being only the second in school history and breaking a 38-year dry spell.
Prior to being named the Tritons’ leader, Popovich spent five seasons as the JV Head Coach and
varsity assistant at Tesoro High School, where he helped lead the program to two league titles and
four consecutive playoff berths.
He is an alumnus of San Clemente High School, Kansas State University and Cal State Fullerton,
where he received his bachelor of arts degree in history and his teaching credential in social science.
Popovich began his coaching career in 2001 as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team
at Saddleback College, where for one year he got to coach with his father, Steve Popovich, the legendary former Marina High School
head coach.
Coach Popovich embraces the philosophy of playing “hard, smart, and together,” and enjoys using the game of basketball to teach life
lessons to his players.
He currently teaches World History and AP European History at SCHS, and is the voice of Triton Football, having taken over public
address responsibilities for varsity home games in 2014. Besides educating the youth of America, he enjoys attending live sporting events,
going to the movies and hanging out with friends.
Popovich and his wife, Kristin, live in San Clemente with their two children - Sydney, age 4, and Mila, 2.
Triton Coaching Staff
Duwayne Horn
Assistant Coach, Varsity
Having been a part of 13 varsity basketball league championships at SCHS, Coach Duwayne Horn is in his fifth
year as an assistant varsity coach in the boys’ program. Previously, he worked for more than a decade with Mary
Mulligan-Crapo and the SCHS girls’ program, winning the league title in each of the 11 years of his tenure. He has
since added two boys’ titles to his resume in his first four years on this side of the gym.
Coach Horn has coached a number of youth travel/AAU teams, predominantly at the 13U and 14U levels, which
have helped feed the SCHS boys’ program. In fact, he has coached youth basketball for the vast majority of boys in
the Triton program over the past six years, including a number of players who have gone on to earn all-league and/
or all-CIF honors.
In addition, early last decade Coach Horn began offering local, low-cost skills clinics. Many past and current
Tritons honed their shooting skills and developed their ball-handling talents under his tutelage.
He is also the father of three former Triton athletes, all of whom are graduates of SCHS. His knowledge
and experience will continue to help the program thrive. When not coaching, Coach Horn is sales manager for a
company in the sports uniform and team apparel industry.
Matthew King
Assistant Coach, Varsity
Though a new addition to the Triton Basketball coaching staff for the 2014-15 season, Assistant Varsity Coach
Matthew King is certainly no stranger to San Clemente basketball.
Coach King started coaching locally with the National Junior Basketball All-Net program during the 2006 season.
Now, he manages the entire NJB program for the San Clemente chapter. Almost every player on this year’s the
Triton Basketball rosters played NJB at some point during their youth careers.
Additonally, Coach King started a new program in 2014, King’s Basketball Club, where he has enjoyed success
developing players and building new teams. His coaching responsibilities with Triton Basketball will include player
development for all divisions.
Among his the highlights of his coaching career is leading the NJB Elite Club program. In 2014, his NJB Elite
team competed in the AAU Division 1 Nationals in Orlando, where it posted a 4-2 record against some of the
best teams in the nation. The squad wrapped up 2014 as one of the top-ranked AAU teams in the entire State of
California.
Coach King earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Liberty University. He and his wife,
Diana, have a son named Kenneth. He says they are all very excited to be a part of the SCHS Triton family.
Oscar Montecino
Head Coach, Junior Varsity/Assistant Coach, Varsity
Oscar Montecinos is in his ninth season coaching basketball at San Clemente High School, where he also coaches
football and baseball. His basketball teams have posted 20-plus win seasons in each of the past four years.
This is not surprising considering the fact Coach Montecinos not just played all three sports while attending SCHS,
he received All-South Coast League honors in all three.
In basketball, the 1998 SCHS grad was the high school sparkplug point guard teammate of SCHS Varsity Head
Coach Marc Popovich. Further, In January of 2015, he was selected as a member of Triton Basketball’s All-50 Team,
the 50 greatest players in the history of the program. He frequently can still be seen lifting weights at local gyms or
playing highly competitive organized or pick-up basketball games. For the past several years he has been the player
coach for the alumni team in the program’s traditional Alumni Game.
After high school, Coach Montecinos moved on to Saddleback College, where he played football and basketball.
Then he attended Greenville Christian College in Illinois, where he continued to play basketball and was voted
captain of the football team.
Montecinos earned his bachelor of arts degree in both criminal justice and history with a minor in political science.
Triton Coaching Staff
Daniel Montecinos
Assistant Coach, Junior Varsity
The 2015-16 season will mark Daniel Montecinos’ 10th year coaching at San Clemente High School. A Triton alum
(class of 1999), Montecinos competed in football, basketball and track and field during his high school career. For
the past 15 years he has held the record for tackles in a single game at 22.
Coach Montecinos attended Saddleback Community College before transferring to the University of Redlands,
where he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and liberal arts in 2005.
At home, he is happily married to his Canadian wife, Julie, whom he met while on a two-year holiday in Australia.
In addition to his coaching role, Montecinos owns a real estate investment company with his wife, helping families
affected by foreclosure. He also has been a certified personal trainer for the past 11 years.
Coach Montecinos is excited to be coaching by his brother’s side for another competitive season. Since rejoining
Oscar in the 2013-14 season, their teams have posted an impressive 45-4 record, which includes two league
championships and wins over each of the teams to which they lost.
He also has become known for creating impressive posters to share with the team from the many tournament
championship photos they have posed for over the past few years.
Christopher Schefter
Head Coach, Sophomore
Christopher Schefter returns for his seventh year of coaching basketball at San Clemente High School and his third
at the helm of the sophomore team. During his tenure, Schefter’s teams have earned five league championships,
including a share of last year’s sophomore boys’ crown.
Prior to joining the boys’ program, he coached the SCHS girls, where he was honored to lead the frosh/soph team
to three league titles and numerous tournament championships.
Additionally, he has played and enjoyed the game for more than 40 years, and is particularly fond of the heyday of
Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers’ “showtime” era.
A teacher in the Capistrano Unified School District for 24 years, Schefter has spent the last nine teaching
psychology/sociology at SCHS. Prior to that, he was at Marco Forster Middle School for 14 years. He jokes that
middle school didn’t kill him, obviously, but did make him stronger and more appreciative of his assignment at
SCHS.
He lives in Lake Forest with his wife, the team’s biggest fan. Both animal lovers, they share their home with three
rescued dogs, several reptiles and an eminently confident conure named Peekaboo.
John Smetona
Head Coach, Freshman/Strength and Conditioning Coordinator
John Smetona begins his fifth season coaching at the freshmen level. – this time as the head coach and overseeing
the strength and conditioning program for the entire basketball program. Coach Smetona has lived in San Clemente
since 1963 and graduated from SCHS in 1977.
He spent the past summer working with the incoming freshman team during league and tournament play, and has
been coaching since his oldest son, Ian, now 30 began team basketball at the age of six. Coach Smetona has coached
at all levels of the local NJB and club team programs.
He worked with his four oldest children Ian, Dustin, Sean (who graduated from SCHS in 2006 and played on
the varsity basketball and volleyball teams) and daughter Tanja. His youngest child, 12-year-old Sarah, is an avid
equestrian and enjoys song and dance. Sean will be joining him on the sideline this season as his assistant coach.
Coach Smetona promotes fundamentals, defense and working as a team. He looks forward to using basketball
as another tool to help prepare young men for the challenges they will face in the coming years. He is a NASM
Certified personal trainer with a specialization in sports performance. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, biking and,
of course, working out. Coach Smetona and his wife, Monika, live in San Clemente.
Triton Coaching Staff
Sean Smetona
Assistant Coach, Freshman
Joining the SCHS coaching staff as assistant freshman coach for the 2015-16 season will be Sean Smetona, who with
his father, John, will form the second family coaching staff in the Triton Basketball program. Brothers Oscar and
Dan Montecinos coach the Triton JV.
A 2006 graduate of SCHS, Coach Smetona lettered in both basketball and volleyball during his high school career.
Smetona says, “I didn’t take the best route in high school, and had to work really hard to make up for some immature
mistakes. The silver lining is it’s helped me relate to young people in a ‘don’t try this at home’ sort of way. I’ve
mentored high school students through a program called Young Life, and that’s also helped me grow as a person.”
Coach Smetona embraces the same coaching philosophy as his dad: “Coaching and sometimes yelling during
practice, but being an uplifting cheerleader during games.” He adds, “I don’t want kids to be afraid to take a shot, or
afraid to fail. Of course, they have to work hard and be coachable.”
Off the court, he works as a freelance designer specializing in brand development. Coach Smetona’s hobbies
include bodyboarding, Muay Thai, drums, guitar, volleyball and an occasional video game.
He resides locally with his wife, Ashley, and a one-year-old daughter, Eve.
TRITON STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
It's Not All About 'Getting Big Like Smetona'
Every edition in the last five years of
Triton Basketball's annual game program/media
guide has featured several boys
stating in their player profiles that their
ambition in life is “to be big like Smetona.”
The Smetona in question is John Smetona,
coordinator of Triton Basketball's strength
and conditioning program since 2011.
And while he looks every bit the part,
Smetona is quick to point out that “getting
big” may be a by-product of his program,
but it's not high on its list of goals. He says
that in addition to getting stronger, quicker
and more explosive there is a major focus
on being more flexible and durable.
“That's why we emphasize compound,
multi-joint movements in what we do in the
weightroom. Having bigger and stronger
muscles isn't worth much unless we're also
building up the connective tissues and
support structure,” he says. “What we're
looking at is how can we help make the
joints more stable, protect them, and
thereby make them far less susceptible to
injury.”
“Movements like deadlifts and clean-andpress
are much more a part of our program
than more static exercises like bench presses
and curls in which most of your body is
locked in place while a limited sets of
muscles is utilized. Those exercises may
look good on the beach. They just aren't as
effective for the combination of durability
and pliability we seek,” Smetona says.
And it isn't all about the weightroom for
Smetona. In fact, incoming freshmen don't
touch a weight for the first six weeks.
“They focus on body-weight movements,
stability and learning proper technique,”
he says. Each boy is sent home with the
link to a video entitled “Yoga for
Flexibility for Beginners.” There is also a
strong running and jumping component
to the program, including many length-ofcourt
sprints.
Senior guard James Paterson credits the
program for helping him bounce back
from a devastating hip injury that cost him
half of his sophomore season. “It's not
just getting the joint and the surrounding
muscles stronger and more durable. It's
also building the confidence that
everything is back even better than it was
Senior guard James Paterson credits the
strength and conditioning program with
helping him make a strong return from injury.
18
before I got hurt,” he says.
Many other upper division players have
embraced the program's philosophy to the
extent that they supplement it with off-site
workouts at nearby gyms. Smetona is
pleased with that, as long as they don't let
their technique breakdown when away from
the SCHS weightroom.
“It's just like when they play in pickup
games and just jack up threes or stand
around on defense. We don't want to see
anyone doing more harm than good by
ignoring the fundamentals,” Smetona says.
Once again this year, more than one
Triton player says in his profile that he
hopes these fundamentals help him “get big
like Smetona.”
A beautiful San Clemente fall afternoon was
perfect for JV forward James VanGinkel to
take to the field for some 30-yard sprints.

SEASON PREVIEW
Reloaded Roster Sets Out to 'Defend the Coast'
“Defend the coast.” That's the mantra
around Triton Gym on the eve or the 2015-
16 basketball season, as the varsity squad
looks to do something which none of its 50
predecessors have done – win back-to-back
league championships.
While he will have only four lettermen
and one starter returning from his 2015
South Coast League Champion squad, Head
Coach Marc Popovich is undaunted. “It's a
largely different cast and a different team,
but the goal remains the same. Win league
and make a nice, long playoff run,” he said.
He is counting on the fact that his
returnees – Cole Fotheringham, James Paterson,
Gage Shelmidine and Dillon Waikle
– are all battle-hardened. Fotheringham and
Shelmidine are past all-league selections, in
2014 and 2015, respectively. Shelmidine
also was the team's defensive player of the
year during his sophomore campaign.
Paterson was MVP of the class of 2016's
frosh team. And 2014-15 Most Impoved
Player Waikle, at 6-11 with shooting range
beyond the three-point arc, could pose a
matchup problem for many opponents.
In addition, Popovich has promoted the
most-decorated lower-division players of his
tenure. With the exception of one player
who moved to town and successfully tried
out for a spot on the roster, every player on
the 2015-16 team has earned at least one
major team award during his SCHS career.
Other seniors are newcomer David
Breen, Aidan Butler, Jake Cameron and
Dylan Hauser. The five juniors on the squad
are Blake Birmingham, Roberto Medrano,
Michael Moran, Isaac Rex and Joey
Spurgeon. Chris Kane is the lone
sophomore on the varsity.
There are five other past lower division
MVPs on this year's varsity (Birmingham
(2), Hauser, Kane and Spurgeon); three past
offensive players of the year (Cameron, Rex
and Waikle); three past defensive players of
the year (Hauser and Medrano (2). Butler
(JV Ironman) and Moran (sophomore most
improved) round out the lower division
honor roll that Coach Popovich hopes will
translate into a successful season.
Newcomer Breen achieves instant cred,
having moved to Camp Pendleton with his
Marine father after spending the last
several years stationed in Germany.
The cohesion of this new unit will be
tested early. San Clemente opens the
season on November 30 in the Diablo
Inferno Tournament at Mission Viejo
High School against Capo Valley
Christian, which some early polls have
picked as a top-five team in Orange
County. Perennial Inland Empire playoff
teams Eisenhower and Valley View are
also in the Tritons' pool.
Adding to the early-season challenge is
is the fact that three of the Tritons' front
court players, forwards Fotheringham,
COLE FOTHERINGHAM
20
Kane and Rex, are likely to be unavailable.
All three are tight ends for Triton Football,
which if seeding holds up would be playing
in the CIF Southwest Division Championship
Game on December 4. The Tritons,
finalists last year, are seeded second.
And once these players complete their
football season, it stands to reason it will take
them at least some time to recover from
playoff bumps and bruises, as well as regain
their shooting touches.
“No excuses.” said Popovich. “If we're
going to achieve our goals, there are always
times in a season when players have to step
up. Our time just may come early this year.”
The Tritons play their home opener on
December 10 against Woodbridge, then by a
fluke
Fotheringham for 3
Senior Forward has Personal
Milestones Within His Reach
Besides becoming the first four-year varsity
letterman in Triton Basketball history to wear
four different jersey numbers during his
career, senior forward Cole Fotheringham can
achieve a couple of more notable milestones
during his senior season.
First, he has an opportunity to become the
first San Clemente player to win three varsity
league titles. Further, with just 10 more wins
he will be at 59 for his career, becoming the
winningest player in Triton Basketball history.
When informed of the possible signposts
ahead, Fotheringham said, “That's cool, not
because of the individual stuff but because if
and when it happens it means we're having
success as a team.”
He is already set to become the first fouryear
varsity letterman since Taylor Harrison in
2006.
With a title repeat, three other seniors,
James Paterson, Gage Shelmidine and Dillon
Waikle, would join the elite club of Triton
players who have won more than one varsity
league championship. Currently, only
Fotheringham and 2014-15 co-MVPs Nick
Crankshaw and Sam Darnold have done so.,
with titles in 2013 and 2015.

fluke of the schedule do not return to
Triton Gym until January 22 for a Coast
View Athletic Conference Crossover game
against San Juan Hills.
This points out another challenge the
team will need to overcome if it is to repeat
as champions – the entire first half of
South Coast League play is on the road.
Before then, it will play at Oceanside in
the San Diego/Orange County Challenge
and against Valencia at El Toro in the North
OC/South OC Challenge. Additonal
tournaments will be Irvine World News and
the Estanica Tustin Classic.
San Clemente also has a non-league
contest at Troy to open 2016 before entering
South Coast League play at Dana Hills,
El Toro, Mission Viejo and Aliso Niguel.
In the second half of South Coast
League play, the Tritons host Mission, El
Toro, Aliso Niguel and Dana Hills in that
order. The Dana Hills game on February 11
is Senior Night and the regular season finale.
If San Clemente qualifies for the CIF
Playoffs for the seventh consecutive year,
the Division 1AA bracket will be announced
on Sunday, February14.
GOING TO THE WELL – Head Coach
Marc Popovich had some resources to
draw from in rebuilding his roster after
losing 11 seniors to graduation from last
year's South Coast League championship
team, namely the program's SCL titleists in
three divisions. Clockwise from top left are
the 2015 champions in the varsity, junior
varsity and sophomore divsions. Every
player on this year's Triton Varsity has won
at least one major team award at some
point during their SCHS careers.
LEADING THE WAY – Senior guard Gage
Shelmidine at the Hugh O'Brien Youth World
Leadershiip Congress.
OFF THE COURT
Point Guard Shows
Real Leadership
Point guards are expected to be leaders on
the court. Triton senior Gage Shelmidine
has taken his leadership skills far beyond.
As a sophomore, he was one of 14 SCHS
students selected as a finalist to attend the
Hugh O'Brien Youth Foundation Southern
California Leadership Seminar at Chapman
University. After submitting an essay, he was
selected to represrent SCHS at the event.
From there, he was one of two selected
to attend HOBY's World Leadership Congress
in Chicago. “The experience completely
diversified my outlook on life as I
spent time with 426 ambassadors from 16
countries and 48 states,” Shelmidine said.
While at the world congress, he was
inspired with an idea for a non-profit
helping families who struggle with drug
addiction. “The ultimate goal is to help the
kids realize they have others there for them,
and that they do not have to fall down the
same path their parents did,” he explained.
This idea earned him an additional
scholarship to HOBY's Advance Leadership
Academy in Atlanta.
“At HOBY SoCal I found my voice, at
WLC I discovered my purpose/dream, and
at ALA I learned the tools to make my
dream a reality,” he concluded.
21
PLAYING THE ONE – While he spends most of
his time on the basketball court playing at the
four, senior forward Aidan Butler is the first chair
violinist for SCHS's critically acclaimed
Chamber Orchestra. He is in his fourth year
performing for the ensemble.
ELECTED OFFICIALS – Junior guards Roberto
Medrano, left, and Blake Birmingham, shown
here at the SCHS Homecoming Parade, are the
ASB vice president and commissioner of
athletics, respectively.
