SWEETWATER CENTER FOR THE ARTS EXPANDS
PROGRAMMING INTO BEAVER COUNTY
Over three years ago, the Sweetwater Center for the Arts Board (SCA) entered into an informal
agreement with the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation (BAHF) to expand SCA offerings in the
Beaver County area. This SCA “satellite campus” will offer an introductory variety of classes hosted
at BAHF’s 3 acre Cultural and
Heritage campus in Beaver,
PA.
Beginning in January 2016, SCA
will offer a wide variety of their
most popular programming
ranging from pre-school, teen
to adult in areas including
water colors, drawing, preschool
clay and children’s
art sampler to teen improv.
comedy. As local response
dictates, programming will
be expanded to include other
popular SCA course offerings.
Classes will be held in BAHF’s recently
renovated national historic district designated
former P&LE Passenger Station renamed
“Beaver Station”. Over $2.5 million was
raised to purchase and make badly needed
repairs and complete the transition of the
threatened and deteriorating 8,500 square
foot building into a cultural and event center
with landscaped trackside courtyard and
event lawn. This multipurpose meeting and
event space is available to rent for corporate
training, non-profit fundraisers and cultural
and entertainment programming or family
gatherings such as wedding receptions.
The campus also includes BAHF’s national
award-winning local history museum in a
restored RR freight station and an authentically
reconstructed circa 1810 log home.
About Russell Recchion...
Russell Recchion is a nationally acclaimed and award winning portrait painter.
A native of Pittsburgh, Russell attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh right out
of high school. While there he spent a semester traveling abroad and ending
up studying in Florence, Italy. That trip changed his life. Upon returning from
Europe, Russell worked as an illustrator and graphic designer in Pittsburgh for
a few years. Yearning to follow his passion for painting and wanting to improve
his craft, he enrolled at the most prestigious art school in the country, The
Since then Russell has painted portraits of many notable people, including CEO’s of fortune 500 companies,
presidents of colleges, philanthropists, judges, and many private portraits of children and families. Word of
EXHIBITIONS
Sweetwater’s Balcony Gallery is open to the public for viewing during Sweetwater’s business hours.
Please see page 1 for building hours of operation.
Poetic Logic: Collage & Assemblage
Exhibition Dates: January 16 - February 26, 2016
Reception: January 16, 2016, 7:00-9:00 PM
In the early 20th century, with the advent of mass production of materials and media, artists like Pablo
Picasso, George Braque and Kurt Schwitters began developing collage as a way of reappropriating and
repurposing materials and images to imbue their works with juxtaposed information that expressed a
kind of poetic logic of association.
In our current culture of mass information and media it is not surprising that artists are finding a
continued purpose in investigating such relevant processes. This exhibition showcases artists working
in collage and assemblage.
“Poetic Logic” is juried by Shawn Watrous. Shawn Watrous is a painter and collage artist from San
Francisco who currently lives and works in Pittsburgh, PA. His work has been exhibited locally and
nationally including shows at The Painting Center in NYC, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the
Mattress Factory Museum, among others. Shawn received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute
and his MFA from Kent State University. He is an Adjunct Instructor at Penn State University teaching
an art overview class that focuses on western art history. www.shawnwatrous.com
Express.
IN PERSON: You may register in person at the Sweetwater office. Please see page 3 for building hours.
TRANSFER POLICY: Students may transfer without any charge from one class to another by calling Sweetwater. Transfers must be made
between accounts. Students are responsible for any price difference in tuition for the transfer.
information, and click “Search.” Click on your class to view the required materials.
SWEETWATER COURSE POLICY: Sweetwater makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as indicated in the catalog. However,
we reserve the right to cancel courses, change instructors, and combine classes when necessary without prior notification.
GIFT CERTIFICATES: Gift certificates must be used at the time of registration. Sweetwater does not offer refunds for gift certificates after
the student has registered. Gift certificates can only be used when registering over the phone or in person. Online redemption is not
available.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS: Sweetwater does not offer make-up classes or tuition reimbursement for student absenteeism. Sweetwater
does not prorate tuition for classes that the student cannot attend. If Sweetwater must cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment,
registered students will be notified one or two days before the start date, and tuition will be reimbursed within two weeks of notification.
If the student must cancel his/her enrollment in a course, the following cancellation policy will apply: Class cancellations must be made
at least 3 business days prior to the start date of class. Students may receive a partial refund ($25 cancellation fee per class will be
applied) OR a credit voucher in the full amount if they cancel no less than 3 business days before the class start date. No refunds or
credit vouchers will be given without 3 business days notice. Credit vouchers are non-transferable between students and may only be
applied towards class tuition.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: Sweetwater makes every effort possible to keep its programs running during periods of inclement weather.
Closing decisions are based on weather alerts, road and school closings, and the ability of the Sweetwater staff to get to and from the
Center and operate the facility safely. In case of closing and/or program cancellations, Sweetwater will update its website’s homepage,
main voicemail, and Facebook page. Website: www.SweetwaterArtCenter.org; Main Voicemail: 412-741-4405; Facebook Page: www.
facebook.com/wherecreativityflows. PLEASE NOTE: Sweetwater no longer calls students to inform them of class cancellations due to
inclement weather. In the event that Sweetwater cancels a class due to inclement weather, a make-up class will be scheduled. If a makeup
class cannot be scheduled, students will be issued a credit voucher or refund for the cancelled class.
CHILD DROP-OFF AND DISMISSAL POLICY: The following policy applies to children enrolled in Preschool, Children’s, and Teen classes
(ages 4-15): In order to keep your child safe, please escort him/her to class every day. If anyone other than yourself is to pick your child
up, please write a note and give it to the instructor at class. If you give your teen permission to walk home or to meet you outside after
class, then you must write a note stating this and give it to the instructor. A photo ID must be shown when picking up children from class.
ACCESSIBILITY: Sweetwater welcomes individuals with disabilities to our facility and is committed to providing the best access possible
to our events and programming. We encourage questions, requests, and suggestions to help us achieve our ongoing goal of creating a
comfortable, enjoyable environment suited to all unique needs and abilities. Accessible entrances to our building include the Bank Street
entrance (to the lower level of our building) and Sweetwater’s parking lot entrance (to the upper level of our building). Once inside,
the lower level and upper level are connected only via stairs. Accessible restrooms and water fountains are available on each level.
Due to the nature of our historic building, Sweetwater’s gallery, located on the mezzanine, is not accessible for persons with limited
mobility. Reserved parking is available for people with disabilities on Bank Street and in Sweetwater’s parking lot. For inquiries concerning
accommodations, please contact Julie Domineck at 412-741-4405 or jdomineck@sweetwaterartcenter.org. Large print materials are
We call it like we see it. When one of the world’s most admired companies puts its
name on a real estate sign, that’s a sign home buyers and sellers want to see. When the
name stands for stability, integrity and strength, that’s a good sign for the market, and
a good sign for home buyers and sellers. Why settle for anything less?
We’re simply the best.
