Letter from the Executive Director
The fall season is in full swing here at the League. I hope you’ve been taking advantage
of what’s been going on or will be coming in soon. If you live too far away to get to
57th Street or the Vytlacil Campus, please stay in touch through the League’s Facebook
page and other social media and enjoy this issue of Lines from the League.
Our fall lecture series has featured League instructor Timothy J. Clark sharing his insights
on Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends, the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, and a
panel and film about League alumnus Al Hirschfeld, the subject of an exhibit at the New-York
Historical Society. In late October, I will moderate a panel in conjunction with The Society
of American Graphic Artists’ Centennial Exhibition, which runs from October 22 through
November 6 in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery. And our 140NOW anniversary celebration
on October 17 promises to be a night of art and revelry!
Among our new classes this fall is “Drawing Fundamentals” with Alex Zwarenstein. This
12-session class introduces students to the elements of drawing in all its forms. More new
classes will be offered in the new year. As always, the League continues to offer classes for
everyone from beginner to professional in from drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking,
and mixed media. Study with us for an afternoon—or for a lifetime! Please read the letter
below from student Joan Haskell to get a feel for the excitement of studying at the League.
Ira Goldberg
Executive Director
Dear Mr. Goldberg,
Please allow me to thank you and the League for a
most memorable year as a student in the watercolor class of
Frederick Brosen (Sept. 2014–May 2015).
From the beginning when I had little experience in the
medium, I progressed to a level of competency that contributed
to my selling a painting (for the first time), which
was exhibited in the class show of March 3–9, 2015.
Without the institution, guidance, and amazing talent
of Mr. Brosen, I would still be a beginner. His class was
not simply about technique but also included art history,
significant painters and styles, the New York art scene,
galleries, and most critical of all, discerning what makes a
great subject. I will always consider him a mentor.
Enclosed is a copy of one of my paintings from the
class. How truly fitting that, at the League, art is everywhere—even
the doorknobs!
Again, my thanks to you, the League, and Frederick
Brosen for a wonderful year of art.
With kind regards,
Joan Haskell
