EDITOR’S NOTE
Happy New Year!!!
Welcome to the second edition of the Seaweld
Times; a collection of interesting stories and events
which took place over the last six months in
Seaweld and the Ghanaian Oil & Gas Industry.
Beginning on Page 1, we revisit Seaweld’s second
successful seafastening campaign of nine suction piles for MODEC &
EMAS AMC on the LAMNALCO1 barge and the NORMAD INSTALLER
supply vessel. On the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) front,
Seaweld has been actively engaged in supporting child education and
infant health care initiatives in Ghana. Read more about the company’s
efforts on Pages 8 & 15.
As champions of Health & Safety in the industry, we teamed up with
New Crystal Hospital to educate and vaccinate staff on Hepatitis B
virus. There was also lots of fun during our emergency medical mock
drill which highlighted the need to dispense effective first aid in the
event of workplace casualty.
Finally, we have taken time (and space!) to congratulate ourselves
once again for being named Fabrication Company of the Year at Oil
and Gas Ghana Awards (OGGA) and Engineering / Construction
Company of the year at the Ghana Oil & Gas (GOGA) award
ceremony. We say Ayekoo to everyone who made this fantastic
achievement possible.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy this edition of our newsletter. Do not
SEAFASTENING of
Suction Piles for MODEC & EMAS
eaweld Engineering was recently contracted
Sby MODEC Ghana to seafasten nine (9)
suction piles constructed by Group Five
onto the LAMNALCO 1 barge and the NORMAND
INSTALLER supply vessel by EMAS, for
transportation to the Tweneboa-Enyenra-Ntomme
(TEN) oil field.
Seafastening of the suction piles included
the fabrication of 114pcs of H-beams (1920mm of
short H-beams and 3760mm of long H-beams);
472pcs of stiffeners; and welding of 88pcs of
stoppers. The height of the suction pile was 21m
with a diameter of 4.5m and a weight of 123 MT
(Metric Tons).
The project took place at the Sekondi
Naval Base and Takoradi harbour from May 12,
2015 and took approximately 28 days for to
complete. Our expert welders, fabricators, safety
officers, MPI certified technicians and project
engineers worked day and night to ensure the
project was completed on time, on budget and to
client satisfaction.
The cutting of stoppers and stiffeners was
done at our Beahu workshop, with the use of
oxygen acetylene to cut the steel plates. After all
cutting was done, the welders then grinded the
cut-out plate to make it smooth for welding. Our
well experienced welders used the tack welding
process to hold the stiffeners to the H-beams
together, whiles our expert fabricators marked out
segments of the barge where the short and long
H-beams will be placed depending on the client's
drawings.
All alignments were checked before full
welding of the H-beams were welded on to the
barge according to the weld lengths given by the
client. MPI was conducted on every weld to
ensure they met international standards. The
project passed all quality tests.
There was also seafastening of client
provided items (CPI) such as Polyester Reels onto
the vessel for transportation to the TEN Oil field.
The scope of work on board the Normand
Installer included beveling and welding of four (4)
gusset plates per suction pile and welding of d-
rings on deck which was used to fasten 20
polyester reels.
Seaweld also welded bumper plates and
stoppers onto the RDS beams and remedial works
on RDS adapters. Visual inspection and magnetic
particle inspection (M.P.I) was carried on all welds
by our NDE providers to ensure our work met
industry standards and satisfied the expectations
of our clients EMAS and MODEC.
Suction piles are used under water by the
oil and gas industry to support floating vessels
such as rigs and oil platforms. The term suction
refers to the method of installation, which implies
Welding & Fabrication
It is an open and closed tube, opened at
the bottom and closed at the top. Suction piles
design differs from various deep sea. The suction
pile design for the Gulf of Mexico will be different
from the one designed for the Gulf of Guinea due
to the nature of different sea-beds.
sucking out the water entrapped in the pile once it
has been penetrated into the seabed under its
self-weight, in order to drive it down to its design
penetration.
Seaweld was a major contributor towards the second FPSO vessel for the Tweneboa-Enyenra-
Ntomme TEN oil eld which is named after late President John Evans Atta Mills. We welded and
fabricated over 250 tons of Deck Stools and Pipe Racks to MODEC for the construction of
Ghana's Second FPSO at Jurong Shipyard in Singapore.
Industry News
Second FPSO named after
Late President Mills
he Jubilee partners
Tformally named their
second floating
production, storage and
offloading (FPSO) vessel for the
Tweneboa-Enyenra-Ntomme
(TEN) oil field after late President
John Evans Atta Mills. The formal
commissioning was done in
Singapore by the partners.
The government settled
on Professor John Evans Atta
Mills after scrutinizing some
names put forward by the lead
operator of the field, Tullow Oil.
The decision to name the vessel
after the late President is said to
have received enormous
approval by President John
Mahama and his Cabinet.
The vessel which would
be used in collecting, processing,
storage and offloading crude oil
from the country's second
biggest oil field after Jubilee is
expected in the country by first
quarter of 2016. This would pave
the way for commercial
production to take off from the
second quarter of 2016 from the
oil field.
The FPSO was converted
from double-hulled very large
crude carrier turret moored with
9 mooring lines. It has a length
of 340 meters, 56 width and a
depth of 31. 8 meters. It will have
the capacity of producing 80,000
barrels a day with a storage
capacity of 1.7 million barrels.
The country's first FPSO
was named after Dr. Kwame
Nkrumah. Partners in the TEN
project are Tullow, Kosmos
Energy, Anadarko Petroleum,
Petro SA and the state-owned
Ghana National Petroleum
Corporation's (GNPC).
The TEN fields are located
which covers an area of more than 800 square
kilometers and lies around 20 kilometers west of
Tullow's Jubilee field.
The TEN project is expected to deliver first
oil in 2016, with a plateau production rate of 80,000
barrels of oil per day. Future development of gas
resources at TEN is anticipated following the
commencement of oil start-up.
Ghana expects at least $20 billion of
investment in its booming oil industry over the next
five years, mainly from foreign companies. The
money would mainly be spent on developing three
offshore blocks - the Deepwater Tano/Cape Three
Points block, the Tweneboa/Enyera/Ntomme (TEN)
block and the Sankofa block.
protect them from the deadly Hepatitis B virus. The
health screening comes as a follow up effort by the
company after it engaged staff a month earlier with a
health Talk themed “This is Hepatitis, Know it,
Confront it!
Hepatitis B vaccine can prevent individuals
from getting the virus, and the serious consequences
of its infection. Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused
by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is transmitted when
blood, semen, or another body fluid from a person
infected with the Hepatitis B virus enters the body
of someone who is not infected.
The Head of Operations at New Crystal
Hospital, Takoradi, Dr. Hope Dogbo, who has
been spearheading the awareness creation
and disease prevention campaign conducted
the staff immunization with a team of nurses
and lab technicians.
In all about 40 participants took part in
the screening session for the first shot of the
vaccination. The process started with taking
blood samples of individuals to know the
status of the virus. After the staff was declared
negative, the first shot of the vaccine was
injected. The second shot will follow in about a
month's time after which the concluding shot will
be taken three months after the second dose.
Three doses are generally required to complete
the Hepatitis B vaccine series, although there is an
accelerated two-dose series for adolescents. The
vaccination gives long-term protection from Hepatitis
B infection, possibly lifelong. The best way to prevent
Hepatitis B is by getting vaccinated.
n Tuesday 29th September, 2015 the HSEQ
Odepartment organized a First Aid
Emergency Response Drill in conjunction
with New Crystal Hospital to assess staffs’
preparedness to respond to a workplace casualty.
The drill was preceded by an awareness training
session by Anthony F. Timpabi (HSE Officer) who
demonstrated steps to be taken in case a member
of staff collapses.
THE DRILL
At 10:25am, the drill started when a staff
member entered the reception after working at the
warehouse and collapsed. Help was sought by
eyewitnesses present who immediately called one of
the nominated company first aiders to help revive
the patient.
The first aider arrived, and first conducted an
ABC (Air ways, Breathing and Circulation of Blood)
check. He then had made an emergency call to New
Crystal Hospital to inform them of the incident and
also requested for an emergency response team
should be sent over. He then continued with the
WOMEN WAHALA
KES
One day, a woman asked her son to call her
husband to ask him what he wanted her to cook
for dinner. After the sixth time the boy
complained to his mother that a female voice
was what he heard every time he called and the
lady would not let him speak to his dad.
By the time the man got home that evening, his
wife was fuming seriously.
She was so angry that she met him at his car and
grabbed his shirt right there in the front yard.
"How dare you cheat on me?" she shouted,
attracting the neighbors instantly. "How could
you? After all we have been through?”
The confused man stared at her - he could not
fathom why she was so mad at him. The
neighbors tried to calm her down but she
refused, and when someone asked for evidence,
she recounted the phone call episode and called
on Junior to repeat everything the lady on the
phone said.
“The number you are calling is not reachable at
the moment. Please try again later," Junior said.
LAWYER AND JAMAICAN MAN
ON AIRPLANE
A lawyer and a Jamaican are sitting next to each
other on a long flight.
The lawyer is thinking that Jamaicans are so
dumb that he can fool them easy...
So the lawyer asks if the Jamaican would like to
play a fun game.
The Jamaican is tired and just wants to take a
nap, so he politely declines and tries to catch a
few winks. The lawyer persists and says that the
game is a lot of fun.
'I ask you a question, and if you don't know the
answer, you pay me only $5; You ask me one,
and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you
$500..'
This catches the Jamaican's attention and to
keep the lawyer quiet, he agrees to play the
game.
The lawyer asks the first question.
'What's the distance from The Earth to the
moon?'
The Jamaican doesn't say a word, reaches in his
pocket pulls out a five-dollar bill, and hands it to
the lawyer.
Now, it's the Jamaican's turn.
He asks the lawyer, 'What goes up a hill with
three legs, and comes down with four?'
The lawyer uses his laptop, searches all the
references he knows.
He uses the air-phone; he searches the Net and
even the Library of Congress.
He sends e-mails to all the smart friends he
knows, all to no avail.
After one hour of searching, he finally gives up.
He wakes up the Jamaican and hands him $500.
The Jamaican pockets the $500 goes right back
to sleep.
The lawyer is going nuts not knowing the
answer.
He wakes the Jamaican up and asks, 'Well, so
what goes up a hill with three legs and comes
down with four?'
The Jamaican reaches in his pocket, hands the
lawyer $5 and goes back to sleep.
Visits
A visit by
Regional Maritime University
n Thursday 30th July 2015, a
Odelegation from the Regional
Maritime University (RMU)
led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Elvis
Nyarko paid a visit to Seaweld as part
of an awareness creation campaign
for their first ever Alumini
Homecoming. This was the first visit
by the university to the company
though the two entities have had
several encounters in the past. The
delegation was received by the CEO
Mr. Alfred Fafali Adagbedu and other
senior management staff.
Prof. Nyakor and his entourage stated
several reasons for visiting the
company. Firstly, it was their desire for
Seaweld to assist their students
obtain internship placements on
Ghana's Floating, Production, Storage
and Offloading (FPSO) vessels and
other offshore rigs operating in the
country.
This he said would help students gain
a lot of practical experience in their
field of study and prepare them for
the job market when they complete
their courses. He stated that since
Seaweld is a major beneficiary of the
Local Content Policy and a key
contributor to the construction on the
country's second FPSO, it is best
placed to assist with their request.
Their visit was also to help solicit
funds to complete major projects the
University has undertaken in recent
years. The university has plans of
completing an ultra-modern complex
which will cater for staff offices and a
library. Current structures have not
been rehabilitated in number of years
now and is unable to support the
needs of the growing number of staff
and students.
