EXHIBITS
W.O. Mitchell:
Folksy, Foothills Philosopher.
Ongoing. Artifacts, images and multi-media
showcase the story of the Mitchell family’s
20 years in High River, and the impact of the
people and prairies on W.O.’s writing. Not
only did W.O. write remarkable literature,
the stories about the Canadian icon himself
are just as entertaining.
Precious Gifts: Recent Acquisitions.
Ongoing. Although much of the museum
collection was lost in the 2013 flood,
the museum has continued to receive
remarkable donations of artifacts, archival
materials and photographs from generous
donors. We are honored to share many of
these historically important objects from
the Highwood region with our visitors.
Museum of the Highwood
On Location: Film in the Foothills.
October 24, 2015 to May 20, 2016. In 1906
the first “moving picture” or “Friscoscope”
was shown at the Victoria Opera House
in High River. In 1919, “moving picture
operators” arrived for the visit of Edward,
Prince of Wales and “captured a few shots
of local views”.
This set off a long series of events that
became interwoven with our history. The
spectacular and varied scenery of the
Highwood area has provided a backdrop for
many films and television shows.
Since the early 1920s, more than 140
films and television series have been filmed
in Southern Alberta. The exhibit features
artifacts and props from Heartland,
Superman, Fargo and more. Grab your
popcorn and take in this “moving” exhibit.
scenes of the business of showing movies with
our beloved local theatre boss Syed Kidwai.
demanding job. Syed will share stories about
the changes in film technology and how he got
involved in the theatre ‘biz’.
