Control and repressions of the totalitarian society:<br />

Directorate (GRU) responsible for the foreign military<br />
intelligence and their cover institutions. The LSSR KGB was<br />
not an exception in recruiting their staff employees from the<br />
nomenclature of the Komsomol. During the Stalinist period,<br />
the nomenclature closely cooperating with the KGB had<br />
participated in the crimes of the Soviet totalitarian regime.<br />
Evidence for the previously mentioned comes through the<br />
concept of secrecy for Komsomol activities, in particular, the<br />
subscription for keeping the work of Komsomol secret, for<br />
example, its participation in repressions.<br />
After the report of Nikita Khrushchev during the 20 th<br />
Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1956,<br />
partial De-Stalinization took place. The leadership of the<br />
Komsomol of the LSSR, following instructions of the Central<br />
Committee of the Communist Party of the LSSR, nominated<br />
their members for positions at various levels of the KGB and<br />
provided support for renewing its network of agents and<br />
staff. However, overall, the nomination process concerning<br />
the members of the Komsomol of the LSSR can be judged as<br />
comparatively inactive in filling positions within the KGB. The<br />
nomination process was much more active in other republics<br />
of the USSR, including occupied Lithuania.<br />
By the mid-1960s the situation had changed,<br />
however, and the involvement of Latvians in the LSSR KGB<br />
remained comparatively low. In 1959, because of the<br />
campaign against “bourgeois nationalism” and the national<br />
communists relying on compromising information provided<br />
by the KGB, the first secretary of the Komsomol of the LSSR<br />
Vladislavs Ruskulis was dismissed along with other leaders of<br />
