You’ve just celebrated the ringing in of the new year,
but in no more than a few months, you’ll also be celebrating the
beginning of a whole new Key Club term. District Convention
and everything leading up to it—club elections, your local
Conclave, and the transitioning of newly-elected appointed
officers—will be a whirlwind of change, but these upcoming
months will allow time for so many new opportunities;
you can choose to grow so much within that time.
All of this change can be startling, but one thing
will definitely remain constant: You’re going to keep on
caring. You’re going to keep living out the meaning of
service, and you’re going to continue expanding your own
definition of leadership when others might not even try.
Whether it’s your first or last year (or something in
between) in Key Club, there’s no reason not to try; you have
every reason to embrace each opportunity that comes
your way this upcoming year. You know what they say: new
year, new you. It’s up to you to set those SMART goals of your
own, to write down those action steps in aiming to achieve
your resolutions, and to decide for yourself how you’ll be like
as a person by year’s end. How will you make 2016 yours?
In the spirit of service,
Happy New Year, CNH!
I hope the holiday season has given you the chance
to reflect on a wonderful year full of service and achievements.
When making your resolutions, remember to make SMART
goals and take small steps to reach your aspirations. Set
benchmarks for yourself, and make an action plan for you to
follow throughout the year. As you’re making goals for yourself
this year, don’t forget Key Club as well! Talk to your club officers
about your ideas that can be an inspiration for change. Pursue a
new service project or start a new tradition – leave your legacy.
As we slowly but surely approach convention, let’s
think back to our District Goals. 5 service projects per month,
$170,000 for Pediatric Trauma Program, and 5 new members
beyond retention per club. As a district, we have already
accomplished our fundraising goal, but what have you
done to help your club achieve the rest? Make it one of your
priorities to continue your outreach within your school and
spread the joy of service to all. Afterwards, join the rest of the
California-Nevada-Hawai’i District at Convention with your
dues-paid club by registering on-time before February 10th!
Additionally, take some time to check out the various contests
located on the CNH CyberKey and apply to make sure
you or your club is recognized for the work you have done.
We have accomplished a lot in 2015, but there
is still a lot of work we still have to do. We have broken
numerous records at Fall Rally, chartered brand-new
clubs in more areas, and expanded our outreach through
several training conferences and awareness weeks. CNH
Bees, it’s been a great 2015. Thank you for letting me a
part of it. Now, let’s gear up for the next couple of months
as we kickstart another year full of service and leadership.
Aloha CNH Bees!
I hope each and every one of you was able
to celebrate a year full of service in 2015 and are
even more prepared for what lies ahead in 2016!
It may be hard to believe, but we are now preparing
for the end of the term. This month, we begin preparing for
the next term as we elect our new 2016-2017 Lt. Governors.
By attending conclave, YOU and the club you serve can
have a role in deciding who will lead the division you
serve for the 11 months after District Convention! Contact
your Lt. Governor for more information about conclave.
Speaking of District Convention, has the club you
serve registered to attend District Convention this April in
sunny Sacramento? If not, make sure you are mindful of the
deadlines: February 10th for on time and March 1st for late
registration. District Convention is a wonderful event where
we celebrate our achievements from the past term, learn
about various topics by attending training seminars, elect
our new district executives, and get excited for the start
of a new term! Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity.
We are almost there, at the end of the 2015-2016
term, and we are SO close to achieving our district goals!
We’ve successfully fundraised over $170,000 for the Pediatric
Trauma Program, served hundreds of thousands of hours in our
communities, and grown, both as individuals and as a family.
Let’s see what we can do in these final 4 months to leave our
lasting imprints upon our homes, schools, and communities.
If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns,
don’t hesitate to contact me at cnhkc.ds1516@gmail.com!
“Bee Team”
Hello CNH BEEs!
Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year! The fresh new
calendar brings us countless opportunities to start off the year
fresh and open to new opportunities and beginnings. For our
district, it is the beginning of an important season: transition.
Elections are beginning to sprout around; I highly
encourage anyone and everyone to take a risk to serve others.
Running for office is such an eye-opening experience and will
definitely be rewarding, no matter the outcome. Whether
you win or lose, it’s not about the result, it’s about the work
you did to get there! In the end, we are all Key Club leaders,
and it is important to remind others that a leadership title
does not necessarily signify higher importance, just additional
responsibilities that they want to uphold. Individual members
make the difference: that is why each Key Clubber is a leader.
I highly encourage clubs to hold their club
elections as soon as possible to promote convention
attendance. Club Officers can receive insightful training from
convention workshops, and it is important that newly elected
officers have enough time to plan out a way to attend
convention. Along with convention planning, the earlier
the election, and the longer each officer has to transition!
Training elected officers gives them an opportunity to ease
into their duties and responsibilities, rather than rush into it.
Remember that DCON is not just for officers! It is
a chance for CNH to come together and celebrate the
amazing term we are currently serving. This is a once in
a while experience and if you have not registered yet,
do so immediately! You will have the wondrous chance
of meeting people from three different states and
experience for yourself what it means to be a CNH BEE!
Happy New Year CNH Bees!
The year 2015 was full of exciting Key Club news, such as introducing
Saudi Arabia into the Key Club family, reaching $100 million raised
for ELIMINATE, and receiving a record-breaking number of YOF grant
applicants. To top it off, things are going incredibly well for the CNH
District too! When you all look back over the year and make resolutions,
don’t forget to shoot high because you have set the bar high already!
To continue from last month, I will go over #4-7 of the top
7 most common characteristics of a standout Key Club:
#4+5 High-performing Key Clubs actively involve their new members
and have a functioning committee/board system. To maintain high
standards for the year, they build a culture of involvement early
in the member experience, which is often supplemented with the
opportunities to lead in a committee system. It all works together!
#6 Top clubs also establish strong relationships with school
faculty: notable the principal. If you get an active, functioning
relationship with your school principal, then things will be much
easier! No matter what, the principal is always available; it
would be a shame to not have such a resource on your side.
#7 Attendance to District Convention also has some correlation to
high-standing Key Clubs. What’s more important though, is how a
club takes advantage of district-level contacts. There’s a power
in networking out that cannot be rivaled - and when clubs band
together for one cause, so much can be accomplished (ex: Fall Rally).
Just as a reminder, a club does NOT need to have these
characteristics to be great! These just stem from statistics; however,
encouraging your clubs to do the things above will only have positive
effects. 2015 has been real, and I know 2016 will be even better!
Service with a smile,
Division 8 Kiwanis Advisor: T. Burt Mcnaughton
Meet T. Burt Mcnaughton!
Standing in the back right of the photo, T. Burt
always puts the members he watches over before
himself. Serving the students of Rodriguez High
school for years, his long-term and full-hearted
service has been recognized. Always spirited,
always dedicated, and always willing to help and
serve, T. Burt Mcnaughton is well deserving of
Kiwanis Advisor of the month!
Some words to describe T. Burt Mcnaughton:
Inspirational: Members use the word to describe him due to many years of
service, proving not only his dedication but willingness to
help. Officers and members alike can all agree that they look
up to him because of his love for service and for Key Club.
Consistent:
T. Burt attends all club meetings and Kiwanis DCMs and only misses
if he truly can’t avoid it. The dedication he shows to the club he
supervises and club he serves is truly something to be proud of!
Friendly:
Always serving with a smile, even the members know he is very
friendly and approachable! Because of him, many people were able
to get over their fear of talking to adults. Isn’t that amazing?
Why are we losing Club Activity at this time of the year?
As we bid autumn a goodbye, we give a warm welcome to the
beginning winter. We also welcome the loss of club activity during this time of
the year. There are many factors contributing to the loss of club activity, some of
which include winter break for many schools across the district. In addition,
many members are away for the holidays and are unable to attend service
projects or events.

Ways to Stay Active
Create and coordinate meaningful
service projects that appeal to members.
Maintain a healthy and stable amount of
club activity.
Include fun and exciting fundraisers for
your local club.
Resources on Staying Active

Involve all of your members in the club so
they feel like a part of the team.
o If there is a perception that a few
people make all the decisions then
it becomes more difficult to sustain
the members’ interest in the club.
Encourage members to stay
active
It is a crucial part of Key Club to
encourage members to attend service
projects and events. Without members,
there would be no club.

A system of rewards can work to get
people to join and be active members in
your club.
o Invest in your members’ personal
or professional goals.
Create a clear mission statement that
accurately reflects the club and make
sure that all members believe in and
support it.
o Allow everyone to take part in
creating a Collective Vision
Assign responsibilities to sustain yearlong
involvement.
Provide thoughtful and memorable
o Designate responsibilities to various
events for the members.
members each month or every
Division
Council
Meeting?
A Division Council Meeting (DCM) is a meeting conducted by
the respective Lieutenant Governor for the members of his or
her respective division. DCMs are full of information about
upcoming events, education about Key Club, and much
more. There is always something for everyone at a DCM!
At DCMs, you will learn more about various projects and
events, get involved with the division and its people, and gain
a better understanding of how great this organization truly is.
You are encouraged to attend in order to learn more about
what’s been happening in Key Club, and why it matters to
you. Some DCMs are even combined with a service project,
fundraiser, or social event so you can be there for more than
one reason!
