Retreatin1979foranimaginarysitenearCordoba,Spain.The<br />
minimalistconceptofthehousewasintegratingthehousein<br />
thenaturallandscape.ItislocatedatthefootoftheSierra<br />
Morenahils,surroundedbyalake,olivegrove,andwild<br />
animalswhichissituated40km from Sevile.Itisastunning<br />
exampleofmodernarchitectureinfusedwithsustainable<br />
designprinciplesandreformulationofthetraditional<br />
Andalusianhouse,centeredaroundapatio,ontowhichal<br />
roomsopen.<br />
Twotal,roughstuccoed,whitewalsmeetatarightangle,<br />
creatinganenvelopeforthehouseanddefiningitsentrance.<br />
Thebindingedgeoftheouterwalsisorientedtothenorth,so<br />
thebalconyisshadyandlightenteringthehouseismoderated<br />
bythesolarreflectionontheinnersidesofthewals.The<br />
houseiscenteredaroundthesquarecourtyard,ontowhichal<br />
therooms,asintheArab-Andalusiantradition,itisan<br />
extensionsquarecourtyardoutdoorlivingspaceswithwalsof<br />
glastoalowfreemovementbetweeninsideandoutside.The<br />
houseconsistssimplyofalargecontinuousspace,containedby<br />
sinuouswals,withdiferentareasdefinedbysmoothcavities<br />
excavatedintothefloorandechoedbytheceilingabove.The<br />
housewasbuiltintheopenair,andthencompactedbyearth<br />
againsttheirwalstocreateaberm surroundingtheentire<br />
livingspaceandisolatingit.<br />
Italsofocusesonfeaturessuchasthepresenceoflight,the<br />
murmurofwater,themanipulationofperspectiveandthe<br />
inhabitationofspace.<br />
