Simply the best place to be naturally
Quite simply, people come to Mid Wales because it’s good for the soul. A home-from-home with
a generous sprinkling of magic, Mid Wales and the Brecon Beacons knows how to soothe, and
surprise her visitors.
Offering natural highs and stunning surrounds, there’s the pleasure of lazy days and long lunches
followed by a gentle stroll to the nearest market, calming cruises along pretty canals, nostalgic
rides by rail and plenty of pre-dinner treats such as that long-deserved pamper session in a salon
or spa. With evenings filled with good company, fine food and first class entertainment, it’s no
surprise people come back for more.
Then there’s her adventurous side for the sport-minded, with dynamic challenges and breathtaking
experiences in the air, on top of a mountain and in the water. And for those who just want some pure
old fashioned fun, there are festivals and fayres, visitor centres and pastimes of every description.
But that’s not all. This small but beautifully formed county not only gives the time-out to relax and
soak in the friendly atmosphere, it also invigorates with the sweet discovery of cultural and artistic
delights from a multi-talented land and people.
Free-fall, dive-in, free-wheel or just breathe deeper, a kaleidoscope of sensations awaits. The
Welsh-homed skill of a warm welcome is renowned, for good reason. With strangers viewed just
as people not yet met, and a friendly nod and smile never far away, it’s got the charm, the variety,
and the space, for everyone, especially visitors, to feel they belong.
Drink in the spirit and exploremidwales.com where time slows down, and the stresses and strains
of contemporary life melt away.
Come and share the infinite amount of fresh air we have here! Be inspired by the green grass
landscapes which take you far and away from daily life.
The mountains are serene with high peaks and hidden waterfalls, soared over by ravens, buzzards
and red kites. But the great thing is, you don’t have to climb them! Admire from afar, then follow
quiet lanes and gentle footpaths to the nearest inn.
We pride ourselves on our green credentials. With eco-accredited businesses, dedicated bus
services, nature reserves and protected areas, the Brecon Beacons are a green paradise. We even
have a European award for it!
For local produce served with good taste
There’s nothing stuffy about Welsh food. The art is its simplicity, high quality fresh produce, locally-
grown or reared, packed with goodness, and available as nature intended, at the right time of
year. That’s not to say you’re limited by the seasons there’s more than enough choice to satisfy the
most discerning of palates and the most ravenous of appetites, useful considering Wales offers the
active so many good excuses to eat more!
The Welsh care passionately about what they eat, and where it comes from. Based on a tradition
of hearty fare for the working man home from the field, sea or coal-face, the wide variety reflects
the ever-changing Welsh landscape. From the heady mountain-tops through to the emerald grasses
and pure waters, the cheeses and wines, meats, fish and seafood, cakes and pastries ooze richness
and good taste.
And the love-affair with good food doesn’t stop there. In true Welsh-style, everything edible is
celebrated at the many festivals and fayres. Designed to entertain the taste-buds and nourish
mind, body and soul, food is presented in all its glory, with demonstrations, tastings and hands-on
activities for all food fans – from the beginner to the confirmed foodie.
And the cherry on the ‘Llech Cymreig’ traditional cake, (best served
a meal fit for kings and queens. For detailed information on the many
Produits du terroir servis avec
bon goût
Les gallois aiment passionnément ce
qu’ils mangent et la provenance des
produits.
Daarom
is er een ruime waaier aan verse,
lokale producten, waaruit kan worden
gekozen. Van al deze producten
druipt rijkdom en goede smaak.
En hun voorliefde voor lekker eten
stopt niet hier. Heel het jaar door
zijn er tijdens het weekend tal van
festivals, beurzen en ambachtelijke
markten die u het uitstekende excuus
geven om toe te geven aan deze
verleiding!
Einheimische Produkte mit gutem
Geschmack
Die Waliser sorgen sich mit großer
Leidenschaft darum, was sie essen
und woher ihr Essen kommt. Dies
ist auch der Grund dafür, dass
es solch ein reiches Angebot an
frischen, einheimischen Produkten
gibt, aus dem man auswählen kann.
Alle Produkte sind in üppiger Fülle
vorhanden und bestechen durch
einen guten Geschmack.
Ihre Liebe zu gutem Essen hört hier
nicht auf. Das ganze Jahr über gibt es
durch unzählige Feste und Jahrmärkte
sowie Bauernmärkte an den meisten
Wochenenden viele vortreffliche
Gründe, dieser Versuchung zu erliegen
Where the greenest
gardens grow
Set against the backdrop of stunning scenery and breathtaking views, the gardens of Mid Wales and
the Brecon Beacons reveal the Welsh belief in the simple things in life. From the small places of
enchantment found in Grandma’s Garden at Machynlleth, to the soldier-like borders with flowers
standing to attention in the grounds of the historic Powis Castle in Welshpool, the Welsh people
know that a good garden nourishes the emotions and cultivates a sense of well-being.
And the fact that gardens mean different things to different people is not a problem either. With a
diverse mix of traditional, formal and eclectic – and the odd one, just plain crazy – with greens so
deep you can drown in them, there is a garden for every occasion…and every personality.
www.exploremidwales.com
For the dreamers and meditators, there’s the tranquility of such gardens as Coity Mawr and Woodhill,
where you can let nature do the work and bask in a world away from it all. For the sensually-led, a
banquet of smells, sights and sounds awaits at Ashford House (not to mention at the many small gems
supported by the National Garden’s scheme). And for those looking for a source of fascinating information
into the world of plants, and a chance to study landscape and design, or marvel at the variety of wildlife,
there’s The Hall at Abbey Cwm Hir near Llandrindod Wells, and the more public spaces of the Rock Park
a stone’s throw away in the heart of Llandrindod Wells.
Unearth a wide range of private gems open to the public on specific days from the National Garden’s Scheme
For inspiring walks at your own pace
Setting out on foot amid the picturesque and varied tracks and trails of Mid Wales and the Brecon
Beacons is pure bliss. There’s nothing like walking to get the true feel of this country, and the
pleasures stretch way beyond just being good for the waistline.
For the uninitiated, the satisfaction is in losing yourself in never-ending landscapes and in finding
things you’re not even looking for: the glimpse on an otter; the perfect souvenir from a local craft
shop; the sighting of a majestic red kite. Then there’s the feel-good factor. The perfect antidote to
the fast-pace of modern life, walking energises weary minds and bodies, giving you a sense of
well-being from the moment your legs begin to move.
So whether your preference is to head out to a nearby village or market town; to stroll along a
river-bank bursting with wildlife or hike up a mountain to breathe in the purest of air, you’ll find
it in Mid Wales and the Brecon Beacons.
For golf with greens of envy…
It’s not by chance that ones of Wale’s best kept secrets took an age to come out. You see they’re
not in a hurry in Wales, and neither is their golf.
It also took a while for the word to spread because, although those in Mid Wales are quite rightly
proud of their diverse choice of courses – from heath, moor and parkland, to upland links and
mountain (guaranteed to raise the pulse a notch or two) they’re not into red carpets, preferring the
green kinds that are fast becoming the envy of the world.
While Mid Wales and the Brecon Beacons’ appeal as a golfing destination has grown, it remains
unspoilt in every sense of the word. With well-maintained courses, readily available tee times and
clubs where the only tilting of hats is a friendly nod to say hello, the slogan now associated with
the great game as played in Wales, ‘Golf as it should be’, is well-deserved. In fact, the only thing
‘unconventional’ is that you’ll find quality, variety and hospitality, without making too large a hole
in your wallet, or purse.
www.exploremidwales.com 14
Fired up by winning the bid to host the 2010 Ryder Cup just down the road at Celtic Manor near Newport,
Where crystal-clear waters reel you in
It’s not only anglers that will fall hook, line and sinker for the waters found in this part of the world.
An area awash with the purest range of rivers, upland lakes and lowland still-waters, with a variety
of water-sports and activities to match, it’s the perfect destination for water-enthusiasts.
And that’s without a mention of the two great rivers, the Wye and Usk. Distinct in their paths, yet
sharing the sense of awe and wonder they create, the Usk winds its way across the forever changing
landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park from its source high on the Black Mountain, while
the Wye, carving out a passage through the stunning borderland, lazes in the shadows and then
kicks up her heels with some grade 2 rapids – ideal for canoeing and kayaking. With both the Wye
and Usk classified as sites of special scientific interest, they are as famed for great salmon fishing and
sailing, as for boating, bird watching and bathing.
For fishing, nature seems to have colluded with the waters and their banks to create perfect platforms,
nooks and niches from which to perch, lounge or cast-off. With just about any species gracing these
rivers, from barbell and chubb to salmon and trout, you’ll be hard-pressed to find better.
With rivers and lakes of every description and every pedigree
winding their way through the countryside, throwing up white
water, gushing down ravines, and meandering along to create silent
pools, the wide choice of activities and sports spring naturally from
the varied landscape.
Where journeys begin
Spoilt for choice with the option of exploring remote corners on horse-back, steam train or narrow-
boat, arriving in the Mid Wales and the Brecon Beacons is just the start of the journey. Travel in
style as you discover the secret places hidden along the narrow-gauge tracks, bridle-paths and
waterways…
The Brecon and Monmouth Canal
The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal is considered by many to be Britain’s most picturesque
canal it offers stunning views of the Brecon Beacons mountain range as it follows the scenic Usk
Valley from Brecon to Cwmbran. Look out for the many pieces of Artwork around Brecon canal
basin, developed with local school children and community groups.
Montgomery Canal
Although derelict for many years this canal has now being reborn. It is a true haven for wildlife as
it winds itself through the picturesque Welsh Marches. Its journey begins at the junction with the
Llangollen Canal at Welsh Frankton and meanders southwards for 35 miles towards Newtown. It
is almost entirely rural with many sites of Special Scientific Interest along the way. At present, only
certain sections are navigable by boat, but the canal offers many opportunities for fisherman and
walkers.
Steer your own course
Hiring a cruiser or narrow-boat is a fine way to experience the magic of the region’s canals at a rate
of knots that suits you. Find out more about the jewel-like waterways at www.exploremidwales.com
Giving you just the right amount of time to appreciate the scenery rolling by, these locomotives
of a bygone-era.
Link the Past with the Future
Proud of their heritage, the Welsh hold a lot of store by what happened in the past. Not, as some
may think, to lament lost battles or celebrate victories, but to keep alive the things that matter and
help us understand who we are today - as individuals and as part of the rich tapestry of people that
make up a community. Or, put another way, just because it’s interesting and fun – and you never
know what you might find, or who you might meet.
This approach to history isn’t about dusty books sitting unused on the shelves, or studying mile
upon mile of yellowing microfiche, it’s about talking to people who have stories to tell, sharing
old photos, pouring over well-thumbed records, and tracing long-lost family members. The joy is
in finding out that a local village was home to an ancient church and a holy well, as the Friends
of Pilleth discovered, or in learning about different ways of life, as the people of Powys did with
their ‘diary of the day’.
With the choice of online searching, or a hands-on delve into the records, journals, accounts and
newspapers kept at County Hall, you can trace your own family tree, marvel at other people’s
memories, and create some new ones of your own.
And the good news is that they not only want to share this living history, by presenting the
information in all it’s glory at http://history.powys.org.uk, they’ve also given visitors the tools to
discover it for themselves at Powys County Archives. For details, email archives@powys.gov.uk or
write to: Powys Country Archives, County Hall, Llandrindod Wells, LD1 5LG and ask for leaflet.
For a wealth of culture
Although snapshots of Welsh culture are apparent in virtually every aspect of a trip to Mid Wales
and Brecon Beacons, an excellent way of getting to the essence of what it means to be Welsh is
by exploring the changing way of life over the centuries, as portrayed in the many museums of
the region.
A chance to experience customs and traditions, follow achievements in science and technology
and see the skill of local craftsmen (and women), each museum takes you back in time to
understand the here and now of the people who live in Mid Wales and the Brecon Beacons
today.
Basged lawn o gelf a chrefft
Nid yw’n debygol y byddwch yn mynd adre’n waglaw gan fod diwylliant a thirwedd Cymru
yn gymaint o ysbrydoliaeth ar gelf a chrefft Canolbarth Cymru a Bannau Brycheiniog. Wedi’u
creu â llaw, eu turnio, eu gwehyddu a phaentio â gofal, gellir gweld sgil a chreadigrwydd
crefftwyr lleol yn y stiwdios, orielau a siopau amrywiol o amgylch y trefi. Ac er y byddwch yn
siwr ̂
o ddod ar draws crochenwaith, lluniau, cerfluniau, gemwaith neu gerameg di-ri a fydd yn
siwr ̂ o’ch denu, gallwch hefyd wneud dim byd mwy nac edrych o’r fan hyn …
Take a step closer to nature
People say that a picture tells a thousand words. For photographers and film-makers, Powys is the
land of plenty. It’s blessed with some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes (and wildlife)
in the country, which have been captured on DVD by award-winning film-makers living and
working in Powys.
Many are presented by TV wildlife expert Iolo Williams, who’s filmed everywhere from lush
wooded valleys and gentle rolling hills, to craggy mountains and imposing dams and reservoirs.
In the Brecon Beacons DVD, Ben Fogle also gets in on the act introducing the Beacons as one of
his favourite National Parks, one which he loved visiting as a child.
Powys really is a film-maker’s paradise and these DVDs show off the county in all its ever-changing
beauty through the seasons, filmed from the air, on hill tops and even underground.
