For over 50 years, people
from all over Wales and
beyond have been helping
us to save and look after
special places on Wales’
beautiful coast.
Thanks to your help in
supporting our successful
Coastline Campaign,
originally launched as
Enterprise Neptune in 1965,
we permanently protect 157
miles of the coast you love.
Places like Rhossili Bay –
often voted Wales’ most
beautiful beach, the unspoilt
wildlife haven of Stackpole
and the secluded beaches
of Ceredigion, Llŷn and
Anglesey, are all in our
care and protection.
These places are cared for by
our team of rangers so that
you and future generations
can enjoy their breathtaking
beauty, rich wildlife and
fascinating heritage.

Our Story
Over a century ago
a farsighted Barmouth resident called Fanny Talbot decided
to give a wild and unspoilt hillside called Dinas Oleu to the
National Trust, then in the first month of its existence.

A YEAR HAS BEEN SAVED
BY OUR COASTLINE CAMPAIGN
SINCE 1965
Worried that modern
developments would spoil its
beauty, she was one of the
first people to see the benefits
of holding beautiful places ‘in
trust for the nation’.
Shocked at how development
was threatening the beauty
of the coast, he said
“It is urgently desirable that
the coast should be preserved
in its natural beauty.”
Forty years later, when the
National Trust’s protection
of the coast had extended to
just eight miles, the historian
George Trevelyan visited
Pembrokeshire.
Then, in 1965, the National
Trust launched its Enterprise
Neptune appeal, starting with
the purchase of Whiteford
Burrows on Gower.
Since then, our protection of the very best of the
Welsh coast has increased to a total of 157 miles.
An amazing achievement made
possible with public donations.

restoring valuable
wildlife habitats
mending eroded paths
…all so that you and your
family can get more from
your visit to the coast.

We’re responding to
the challenges of sealevel
rise by a creating
an amazing area of
wildlife-rich salt marsh
at Cwm Ivy, Gower.
We hope this will reduce
the flood-risk down the
coast whilst providing
great bird-watching
opportunities.

Thanks to the Coastline
Campaign fund, we’re
creating four kilometres
of new coastal walks
at Southwood,
near Newgale,
Pembrokeshire.

Llŷn
We’re joining up with
the local community
to restore a valuable
part of Llŷn’s maritime
heritage, two traditional
fishing boats, built
about 100 years ago
in Aberdaron to a
unique design.
