Founded in 1950 as a one-person 

international trading company, 

today, ICC engages in both world-wide 

trading and manufacturing at facilities throughout the United

In addition to the international and domestic trading and 

marketing of chemicals, plastics, and pharmaceuticals, ICC’s 

manufacturing operations include extrusion of plastic resin

batch and production of color concentrates; production of specialty 

chemicals; production of coatings, synthetic resins, sheet molding

management experience — scheduling ship, rail and truck

managing foreign exchange risks, and negotiating

• Distribution division, operating from offices in New 

York City and Chicago, which supplies a wide range of

financing imported products, enabling it to provide the

Dover Chemical Corporation (www.doverchem.com) 

has grown to be a preeminent supplier to the world-wide 

chemicals and plastics markets since its 1975 acquisition 

by ICC Industries Inc. 

The Ohio-based company has continued to evolve, and 

currently ranks as the second-largest liquid phosphite 

producer in North America, with its organophosphate 

plant and Doverphos ® product line. The 1997 construction 

of an on-site alkylphenol plant enabled Dover to serve as its 

own supplier and to participate in the market with paranonylphenol 

and other alkylphenols. 

Dover has built a new, state-of-the-art facility to 

manufacture Doverphos S-9228 ® — a patented plastics 

additive invented by the company. After years of rigorous 

petitioning and testing, Doverphos S-9228 ® earned FDA 

and global approvals for use in indirect food contact 

applications. Dover ensured a continuous supply of critical 

raw materials for this product by building a para-cumyl/dicumyl 

phenol plant in 2000. A complementary blending 

operation allows Dover to offer various forms of Doverphos 

S-9228 ® in combination with other blend components. 

Further acquisitions and investments enabled Dover to 

expand its polymer additives offerings with its Doverlube ® 

and Tri*Cal ® calcium and zinc metallic stearates in 2003. 


Although its focus during recent years has been in 

polymer markets, Dover’s continuous improvements and 

expansions have made it the leading producer of 

chlorinated paraffins in the U.S. In 1996, Dover acquired 

the solid chloroparaffin business of Hoechst A.G. and 

currently markets this and other products through both a 

direct sales force and ICC Chemical Corporation. 

Dover reinforced its commitment to the lubricant 

market with its 2002 acquisition of Mayco Chemical from 

Castrol Industrial N.A., enabling it to offer a full line of 

lubricant additives including sulfur chemistry. Dover also 

acquired the petroleum additives business of Ferro 

Corporation and integrated all metalworking 

manufacturing at its Indiana location. These acquisitions 

expand Dover’s presence in the global marketplace by 

combining superior-quality product lines with the 

international reach of ICC Industries Inc. The value of

Primex Plastics Corporation (www.primexplastics.com), 

founded by ICC Industries Inc. in 1965, is a recognized 

leader in the U.S. custom sheet extrusion industry. 

From its roots operating a single three-machine plant in 

Englewood, New Jersey, Primex has earned and enjoyed a 

steady evolution, now encompassing six state-of-the-art 

U.S.-based manufacturing facilities located in New Jersey, 

Indiana, Georgia, Nevada, Texas and Florida, as well as a 

plant in the United Kingdom. 

With over 100 processing lines, Primex extrudes 

plastic sheet using polystyrene, polyethylene, acrylonitrile 

butadiene styrene (ABS), polypropylene and polyester 

resins — in addition to an assortment of specialty products

Timisoara, is one of Romania’s largest paint and lacquer 

producers. The company was founded in 1923 by Eugene 

Farber, the father of Dr. John J. Farber, Chairman of ICC 

Industries Inc., and was nationalized in 1948. In 1999, 

Azur was reprivatized when ICC Industries Inc.

Research and Development 

ICC’s New Product Development Center, located in Indiana, 

was established in 1992 to serve as corporate leader in the 

forward-thinking expansion and enhancement of the ICC 

companies’ product arrays. Providing comprehensive technical 

assistance both internally and directly to ICC customers, the 

facility operates in full compliance with ISO 9001. 

The Center’s special area of focus is thermoplastics, with emphasis 

on complete products and concentrates (master batches). 

Capabilities 

Physical Testing 

The Center is designed to administer all of the physical property 

assessments typically presented in an industry data sheet. 

State-of-the-art equipment for such tasks as computerized 

tensile, compressive and flexural strength testing is utilized in a 

temperature-controlled laboratory to assure accuracy of measured 

values. Other, less frequently reported values, such as coefficient 

of sliding friction and thermal expansion, are also routinely 

measured. Examinations of small-scale phenomena, such as 

surface defects and contamination, utilize the facility’s researchgrade 

binocular microscope with integrated digital camera. 

Sample Preparation 

Two roll mills, lab-scale single-screw extruders, leading-edge 

sheet co-extruder with five layer capability, and high-temperature 


capable Battenfeld injection molders are used to prepare test 

specimens of new products and product improvements. 

Environmental Testing 

Accelerated weathering is performed in a QUV Cabinet and 

Xenon Arc Weatherometer, with heat and humidity aging 

chambers available as well. Computerized color spectrophotometers 

are used in the evaluation of accelerated 

weathering specimens along with loss of ductility as 

measured by loss of impact strength or elongation. 

Flammability 

Ignition resistance testing, such as is specified by Underwriters 

Laboratories, FAA, and DOT, is routinely conducted. 

Analytical 

High accuracy measurement of glass transition temperature, 

crystalline melting point, and recrystalization temperatures 

are made with a Differential Scanning Calorimeter. FT-IR 

is utilized to further enhance the efficiency and accuracy of 

all identifications. These “fingerprints” identify many 

elements of thermoplastic composition. For more complex 

identifications, the facility enjoys access to the industryleading 

analytical capabilities of Earlham College in 

Richmond, Indiana, which can conduct NMR, HPLC, and 

scanning electron microscopy.
