To generate is to cause something to come about. To create, to begin, to
catalyze; these are all generative movements. Inspired by our long-time friend
and founder, Mako Fujimura, and his work in the movement of “culture care,”
Wedgwood Circle has themed 2016 GENERATE.
In this work, Mako has given us three principles that will guide us this year as
we seek to nurture a healthy culture around us:
Cultivate and recognize Genesis Moments. As a community we will encounter
moments that spark ideas, and acting on them will provide needed support to
rising artists and new projects. Working with the community and facilitating
action/response to Genesis Moments lead directly to the creation of art and
entertainment that is good, true and beautiful for the common good.
Embrace Generosity. Whether by investing patron or for-profit capital, or
through the sharing of relational or intellectual capital, fostering a generous
community of investors and philanthropists will generate culture, realize
long-term impact and further Kingdom growth.
Develop Generational Thinking. Perhaps the most important aspect of culture
care, the work of impacting culture does not happen overnight, nor is it easily
measured against short-term goals. Culture care unfolds over a generation.
Thinking long term and about the impact of our work today on future generations
will allow us to see strategically rather than being short sighted.
This past year VISION gave us guidance for what we can do and where we
are going together. We will be unfolding some new programs this year that
were seeded in the last, and exploring new initiatives that will be realized in
the future.
You can expect 2016 to be a pivotal year for Wedgwood Circle as together,
we generate new ideas and programs, capitalize new avenues for investing
in artists and their projects, and pursue new ways of demonstrating our innovative
thought leadership. We are confident that the work of this year will
GENERATE “beauty, goodness, and truth” next year, and for many years after.
