DECADES DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Wedgwood started in 2007 when a band of
investors, thought leaders, and artists came
together around a transformative idea: that our
creativity and imagination reflect the very nature
of God, and people of faith have a responsibility
to be creators and patrons of the world’s finest
arts and entertainment. Wedgwood believes that
culture is actually “upstream of politics,” and if
we want to infuse the world with truth, beauty,
and goodness, we should start by infusing it with
good art.
As we look toward the next decade we are encouraged by the diversity of
the gifts, talents, and experiences of those in the Wedgwood community
who are responding to their calling to create culture and shape our future.
Over this next year, we stand on a firm foundation as we work to grow our
impact through support and Membership, deepen relationships with the
artists we serve, and walk intentionally alongside Members, helping them
explore where their passions and resources align with opportunities in
culture spaces.
The following pages tell the story of ten years of Wedgwood Circle, but
this is only the beginning. We hope you’ll join us on the journey through
the next decade. There is no thing else like Wedgwood Circle, and the
Circle is you!
Gratefully,
Over the last 10 years, we have been committed first and fore most to
investing in those who are called to create content for the culture at
large. At our annual event in November 2016, Mako Fujimura said that
“Christian ” should never be an adjective; we wholeheartedly agree. As
C.S. Lewis wrote: “The world does not need more Christian literature.
What it needs is more Christians writing good literature.”
We also have been committed from the beginning to a paradigm, not a
program. Culture is not static, and neither is Wedgwood. Over ten years
we’ve added programs and projects, invested in hundreds of artists and
have grown into a deep community - artists, investors, patrons, creative
industry leaders, thought leaders - who share in this mission.
WEDGWOOD
OVERVIEW
Wedgwood Circle is a network of creative
industry leaders, artists, investors and patrons
working together to create art and entertainment
for the common good. We accomplish this by
advancing thought leadership, offering oncein-a-lifetime
Member experiences, and by
facilitating capital flow for projects in many
art-related sectors. We believe creativity and
imagination reflect the very nature of God, and
that people of faith have a responsibility to be
creators and patrons of the world’s finest art
and entertainment.
WE
DO
6
WHY WE
DO IT
@7
Wedgwood focuses on the creation of art
and entertainment in the industries of film,
music, television, publishing, theatre, fashion,
fine arts, comics/graphic novels, computer/
console gaming, and new media. We do this in
three ways:
CONNECT
Building a community of common cause, including investors, patrons,
sector experts and funded artists. Sharing experiences through concerts,
live performance gatherings, Inner Circle Experiences, retreats, and
conferences that celebrate the efforts we are undertaking together.
EDUCATE
Informing investors and donors and the community through reports,
events, proprietary “sector strategies” and other recommended readings,
and connections with sector experts. We seek to inspire others to live into
the Wedgwood mission in their own networks and communities.
CAPITALIZE
Facilitating strategic capital deployment through a granting patron pool
and special member projects, as well as the Wedgwood Culture Fund, a
mechanism we developed to focus on facilitating deal flow and programrelated
investments.
Wedgwood Circle’s mission rests on the
understanding that ideas have consequences, and
cultural content shapes ideas. Our name is drawn
from Josiah Wedgwood, a renowned innovator,
scientist and businessman who is considered by
many as one of the most influential figures in the
history of Western civilization ceramics. He was
also a supporter of the 18th century Anti-Slavery
Committee and designed a ceramic medallion
depicting a slave kneeling in chains surrounded by
the inscription, “Am I not a man and a brother?”
Benjamin Franklin said of Wedgwood’s tokens,
“they may have an effect equal to that of the best
written pamphlet.”
Although thousands were freely given to anyone who shared Josiah’s
sentiments on slavery, thousands more were manufactured and sold.
Wedgwood showed that one could promote social change while building
a business. The Wedgwood Circle is inspired by this vision and model of
doing good while doing well through cultural engagement and cultural
artifact creation.
PATRON FUND
Ten percent of Wedgwood Circle Member fees seed a patron pool that
supports artists through micro-grants. Since it’s inception in 2008, the
patron pool has granted over $700,000 in grants of $500-$5,000 to
artists and projects that embody “the good, the true, and the beautiful” in
the mainstream market.
PROGRAM RELATED INVESTMENTS
Managed through the Wedgwood Culture Fund, Program Related
Investments (PRI) are deployments of non-profit capital into for-profit
opportunities that promote the mission of the non-profit. Currently
our investments are in the areas of music, graphic novels, literature and
television. Returns from investments will help replenish the fund for
additional high-risk investments in innovative and culture-creation. Since
2009, we’ve moved over $400,000 through PRI funding.
PITCHES
Wedgwood Circle investors move capital to individual artists, specific
projects, and/or companies. Our community, made up of sector liaisons
and other creative industry leaders, helps curate for-profit strategic
initiatives for investments that exemplify significant potential for cultural
influence.
PROJECTS
Wedgwood Circle encourages Members to explore the areas of art and
culture they have a specific passion for, and we make ourselves available
to support them by strategizing, facilitating and potentially managing new
and existing projects that fit their interests. In addition, the Wedgwood
Culture Fund supports the work of foundations for their projects in the
areas of culture engagement.
2017 WEDGWOOD ANNUAL OVERVIEW
SECTION
TWO
MOLLY MALONE
+ NISOLO
13
STORIES
Molly joined the Wedgwood Inner Circle in
2016 and lives in Austin, Texas. She attended
her first Annual Event in 2015 and immediately
jumped into the community, especially drawn
to impactful creative entrepreneurship. Molly
met and chose to invest in Nisolo at the 2016
Annual Event.
WHAT DREW YOU TO THE WEDGWOOD COMMUNITY?
I work in the technology space, but I am personally passionate about the
arts - creative areas that fall outside of my day to day. I was looking for an
outlet to explore those spaces beyond my profession in IT and Wedgwood
offered me a way to do that
WHAT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN THE COMMUNITY?
Hands down, the relationships have been most important to me. It’s been
amazing to hear what others are doing in their own communities and I’m
inspired by their stories! They are helping me better understand how I can
create cultural impact in my networks and local community.
HOW DID YOU CONNECT WITH NISOLO?
My first introduction to Nisolo was at the 2017 Annual Event. I was
intrigued by their business model during Patrick’s panel and I had the
opportunity ask more questions at dinner. After hearing his story, we met
at the store to talk about the business model.
2017 WEDGWOOD ANNUAL STORIES
14
In my conversations with Patrick, I was impressed with the business plan.
And the simplicity of the marketing and the quality of the products,
beautiful shoes, beautiful bags, beautiful jewelry was all very relevant,
simple and marketable. The aesthetic of their storefront was beautiful
and so inviting. And the connection back to the family in Peru including
the impact they have had on that community by employing others is truly
inspirational.
I love that they have grown to employ additional people from that
community and all the children of Nisolo employees are now going to
school. This is meaningful not only to the business, but has created a
tangible impact on the community. The business acumen and social
impact is very powerful and that was the reason why I invested.
WHAT ULTIMATELY MADE YOU SAY “YES” TO INVESTING
IN NISOLO?
It was definitely that combination of great story, solid business, and social
impact. But after I evaluated the business plan, I said yes. I was looking for
a combination positive long term impact socially and financially, and we
felt like Nisolo was a viable investment opportunity.
FAVORITE NISOLO PRODUCT?
I love the jewelry! The brass and bone ring and necklace are new staples. I
love the chukka boots, but I think my favorite shoes are the patent leather
oxfords. They’re beautiful!
2017 WEDGWOOD ANNUAL
FROM GRANTEE
TO MUSIC VETTER
17
My name is Brooke Waggoner, and I write a lot here in Nashville. I
compose, I make records and tour, and I do a little bit of production.
I felt at a very young age, as a young child, that I was meant to do music in
my future. I didn’t really know what that looked like, but I knew it was the
way that I could express and communicate in a way that I couldn’t with
words or any other medium. So to be able to talk about things I really care
about, and things that I feel like should be a part of the conversation of
culture, music seemed to be the obvious conduit for that.
I’ve been with Wedgwood almost 8 years. Early in my career when I was
starting out, things were really formative and I was needing some help
and support. I got hooked up with Wedgwood through Charlie Peacock
and received a micro-grant, which helped buy a touring van for me and
my band at the time. It was a crucial and very pivotal moment, and the
grant let us move forward and have access to where we needed to go and
spread the music.
I’m now a Vetter for Wedgwood. I helped secure a grant for an artist
named Timbre (Cierpke), who is this beautiful, magical harp player/singer/
artist/writer. That was really special, to help provide some seed money
for her and her vision, and was a tremendous full circle moment for me.
Getting to share the work that Wedgwood is doing with fellow artists who
have great things to say and things they’re making, but don’t necessarily
have access to the monetary things they need to make that happen on a
broader level, and connect some dots there has been incredibly satisfying.
It feels like a sense of “paying it forward” and getting to help to build
some of those bridges feels like a real impact. Being 10 years into my
career at this point and to get to talk about that with young artists has
been special…this incredibly next level experience for me. It’s about other
people’s work, and that feels very satisfying to be a part of.
STORIES
CONNECTING MEMBERS
+ SECTOR LIAISONS
18
When Wedgwood Sector Liaison Carter Pilcher founded Shorts
International in 2000 it was a labor of love, and over the last 17 years
it has grown to become the world’s leading short movie entertainment
company, functioning as a distributor, broadcaster, and producer for the
short film format. Shorts International includes SHORTSHD, a 24/7 HD
TV channel dedicated that brings audiences the best short films from
around the world. It also runs an on-demand service for short movies
through iTunes and other outlets, and is responsible for the theatrical
distribution of the Oscar Nominated Short Films in theaters across the
US and Europe each year.
As a voting member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts
and a member of the Short Film and Feature Animation branch of the
US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka, the folks who
hand out the Oscars),, Carter has extensive experience in the short movie
production and entertainment space.
On February 25th, Members had the unique opportunity to join Carter
and the 2017 Oscar-nominated short filmmakers in Los Angeles at the
Shorts Awards ceremony, which is held the night before the Oscars each
year. This event is part of a new series for Wedgwood Members called
Inner Circle Experiences. Small and curated, these events are designed to
bring our community closer together around an interesting culture project
or event. As Wedgwood rolls out more Inner Circle Experiences across the
year, we look forward to introducing Members to more the incredible work
being done by Sector Liaisons and other leading artists who are creating
good, true and beautiful art for the the world.
