Remember who the Governor was when you joined Rotary? How about
the Club President? You might, if they were in fact your Rotary Sponsor,
the one individual we all remember in our Rotary Journey. You may have
made an introductory visit to your club or maybe even the three visits
some clubs require prior to membership, however; the first day of Rotary
for all of us generally started on the day we were inducted into OUR Great
organization.
Does your club make a BIG DEAL of a new member induction? It should
be a really big deal and that’s what we’ll be talking about on our next
webinar titled: The Lost Art of the Induction.
Webinars are easy and fun. You can participate from the comfort of your
own home, with your favorite snack and beverage! Please invite others
in your Club & District by simply forwarding this invitation. They can
register using the link included.
•Videos must be relevant to the theme.
• Although we do not wish Clubs to use
a professional to create the video, we
do suggest that they approach local
experts to advise them. Media contacts
are always useful!
• Take a look at the videos for download
on rotary.org to get some ideas
and look at the discussion about President
Ravi’s theme.
Club of the Month
Awesome activities and ideas from large clubs
Winston Churchill has stated and I quote, “No idea is so outlandish that it should not be considered.”
In this article, ideas from the large clubs in our ‘Awesome District’ will be shared on how they assist last December
with ‘Disease Prevention and Treatment in their community.’
During this month, clubs such as the Rotary Club of
Liguanea Plains and the Rotary Club of Tortola made
donations to foundations, and / or partnered with
other organizations to encourage persons to get tested
for HIV.
Pictures from the Rotary Club of Tortola
Lower Left: Donation check of $1,000 to the HIV/
AIDS Foundation for medical assistance, Test Kits
and Condoms for the “Know Your Status, Get Tested”
Initiative leading up to World Aids Day (1st December
2015). Lower Right: A healthy run with Rotarians
and the BVI Community on World Polio Day.
The Rotary Club of Eleuthera partnered with a church
to provide medical screenings to all of the children
present at a Back to School event and donated vitamin
supplements, ensuring that the children were
not experiencing any health challenges, thus improving
the health and wellbeing of children in the community.
Well done!
The Rotary Central Cayman Islands also wrote and
recorded Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) on
topics like STD’s, AIDS, and how they are transmitted,
the impact on pregnancy etc. These clubs also
partnered with others to organize diagnostic tests for
checking ones blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
Nice!
In an effort to fight prostate and testicular cancer in
the Virgin Islands, the Rotary Club of Tortola supports
the BVI Red Cross in screening over 1000 men each
year. This annual screening provides an opportunity
for men to get tested, it helps to catch many cases in
the early stages, and helps to saves lives. What a wonderful
initiative!
The Rotary Club of Southeast Nassau continued their ‘Breast is Best Campaign’ to encourage mothers to
breastfeed. Billboards were even erected in several prominent locations on the island to bring further awareness.
Lovely!
Whilst the Rotary Club of East Nassau, committed to providing 9-10 Hearing Aids for needy children ensuring
that these children who could not hear would be able to after receiving the hearing aids. Bravo!
The Rotary Club of Kingston made a financial commitment to the
University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) for the construction
and equipping of a paediatric oncology isolation, known as“Sean’s
Gift”. Their goal is to offer an environment equipped and amenable
to saving children’s lives as well as augment the ability and capacity
of the UHWI’s Paediatric Oncology Department to accommodate
more children in administering critical cancer care. In the picture
The Rotary Club des Cayes distributed five hundred (500)
Sawyer Filters to the communities of Chantal, Crabier, Marc
and Raymond, four different rural areas nearby Les Cayes to
provide clean water, which will help to decrease the spread
of diseases such as gastrointestinal infection, cholera, and intestinal
parasites, which affects the population in Haiti. Outstanding!
The club also finished the construction of ten (10) flush toilets
with hand wash stations in the elementary school, Perpetuel
Secours, in Les Cayes DAF 132. Excellent!
Pictures from The Rotary Club des Cayes:
Beneficiaries receiving hygiene and training Information
(above) and community members going home with their
complete filter kits (right).
Likewise, the Rotary Club of St. Thomas was one of the partners in the Global Grant for Boulmiere Haiti to
provide safe water for the residents thereby not only helping with disease prevention but also ensuring that
the children can attend school instead of spending 3 hours collecting water. Superb!
The Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town and Rotary
Club of Road Town participated in Alzheimer’s
Awareness Campaigns to create awareness and
provide information on the disease. Both clubs also
partnered with the Lions Club to hold a candlelight
vigil on World Alzheimer’s Day. Magnificent!
Similarly, the Rotary Club of St Croix Mid-Isle partnered
with Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, Diageo
USVI (Captain Morgan), Quantum CT and the Department
of Health and Human Services to open
the first Multi-Sensory Room for Alzheimer’s patients
in the Caribbean at the Herbert Grigg home
for the Aged. Over 80% of residents at the facility are
afflicted with some form of dementia. The goal is for
the room to create a safe and soothing environment
for these individuals and improve their quality of
life. Such a great idea!
Finally, the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II joined with Rotaractors to host a mini workshop for EarlyAct Club
on hygiene and general health in particular. St. Thomas II also supported the EarlyAct club’s ‘Garden Project’,
which entailed planting gardens of herbs and tea bush to stress the importance of eating well to help reduce
diseases. Wonderful idea to educate the next generation!
Hope you enjoyed the excellent ideas that were shared in this edition. Please remember, “Ideas won’t keep.
Something must be done about them.” - Alfred North Whitehead
HAITIAN ART
UNIQUE HAND CRAFTS
Its people here, young and old are proud to be the first black nation to get its independence
since January 1, 1804. Rotarians have shown their great leadership in their community
and after the earthquake of January 2010, have given hope to the victims in many
communities by improving people’s living conditions, rebuilding classrooms and projects
in the different Areas of Focus are taking place where there is a Rotary Club. Thanks
to DAF Funds, Matching Grants and Global Grants and help from many Rotary Clubs
throughout our district and from many parts of the World, Rotary has made a difference.
Rotarians in Haiti understand well the this year’s theme and contin-ue to be a Gift to the
World using their skills for success, and working towards significance.
As DGN Robert always says while doing his training sessions to Rotary Clubs, “ROTARY
IS A POWERFUL TOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT! ”
ABOUT HAITI
Haiti means land of mountains and
everywhere there are mountains and
hills. Its natural beauty is magical.
The cool and even cold mountains provide
people with a change of temperature and a
get away from the Caribbean heat. Beautiful
beaches with white sand and clear blue water
are in different parts of the country making
you feel you are in paradise.
Visitors are welcome to see more if they
wish. There are waterfalls in Jacmel, Saut
Mathurine and others in different parts of
the country. That is not all, there are natural
caves to visit such as Grotte Marie Jeanne. Flowers are grown without any difficulty and in
gardens, Orchids can be admired attached to trees and showing off their beauty and color.
As far as historical sights , we have La Citadelle in the North that must be seen before leaving
the country.
Among many agricultural
products, Haiti produces
sugar cane, coffee, rice, and
many varieties of mangos.
A very important industry
that this country is know for
is the Vetiver making Haiti
the number one producer.
Vetiver a root plant which
is transformed into vetiver
oil, is sold in Europe and
United States to become
the base for perfume and
other purposes. The best
roots comes from the hills
in the south of Haiti and is
considered a gift from God
since it requires little or no
care. The best quality of
vetiver oil in the world is
known to come from this
country.
Haitians have a beautiful
culture, similar to that
of other countries in the
Caribbean, but is very
special and unique! It
welcome the tourists with
its music, folklore, dance
, traditions and artistic
talents. Once here, you will
appreciate and admire the
beautiful and original hand
L’Ecole Notre
Dame d’Altagrace de Delmas avait l’institution choisie
pour cette grande premiere.
La Formation avait ete couronnee de succes. On va l’etendre
prochain. La demande nous vient de
toutes parts.
