Afrotrend Magazine 3rd issue 2016

In this issue we look at the Zambia fashion week 2015. I loved that some designers decided to take a bold step with their collection, one of them is DebbieChu. Her collection was something that we don’t get to see on the Zambian runway, big ups to her. The must – haves are straight from the runway, we selected some pieces that just have to be part of your wardrobe. The local destination is a place not so far away from Lusaka town called Tiffany’s canyon, you can easily visit this place with family or friends because it’s the perfect weekend getaway.

David Tlale: Guest fashion designer at the ZFW 2015
DESIGNER NAME: DAVID TLALE
BACKGROUND: South Africa
BRAND VISION
Over the past 10 years since he launched his brand
in 2003 winning the "Elle New Talent in South Africa,
and being noted as the Best Designer by the
Sunday Times in South Africa, this award winning
designer David Tlale has proven that he is indeed a
design force with creations that go far beyond expectations.
The year 2005 was a testimony of a great journey
unfolding when Tlale was appointed "Head Designer
for Carducci Woman" under the House of Monatic
Group in Cape Town South Africa.
In 2007 Tlale focused on growing the David Tlale
movement, and was one of the 4 young South African
Fashion designers to be selected to present
their Couture Collection during Paris Couture week.
This was the turning point for the brand where
Tlale began to view his brand through the eyes of
the world.
2008 was a fruitful one for the David Tlale brand; a
year in which Tlale: was voted the most stylish designer
at the South African Style Awards, he was
also voted Mzansi's South Africa's Star Designer of
the year.
Nominated for the Mercedes-Benzes Fashion and
Art Awards along with many other accolades and
nominations, Tlale was invited to judge the Elle
New Talent competition a place where his journey
in fashion began. award winner
Tlale's proud moments of 2008 included Designing
a show stopper Couture master piece for
British super model Jordan Dunn at the closing
show for Virgin Mobile Cape-Town Fashion
Week.
Chosen to be an ambassador for the Change-4-
Ever campaign that aims to alleviate poverty in
Southern Africa. Launched a Green Collection for
the voluptuous women of Mzansi; including the
likes of Judith Sephuma, Lebo Mashile, KG
Moeketsi and Anele Mdoda.
2009 marked a turning point of the brand when
Tlale won 'Designer of the Year" after showcasing
his debut Spring/Summer 2010 Ready-to-
Wear Collection that defied all expectations at
Africa Fashion Week awards hosted by international
super model Alek Wek. This Award afforded
Tlale to debut his brand at Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week New York Spring /2010 amongst
other three African designers, courtesy of African
Fashion International and Arise Mag. World wide
30

The catwalk journey didn't only expose Tlale to
the world but he has enjoyed PR, MEDIA exposure
on both local and international coverage and
showcase, taking the brand "David Tlale" to astronomic
heights. His household brand that firmly
stands its ground among an ocean of other labels,
this being attributed to the sheer design erudition
and precision that challenges mediocrity.
Exciting times continued when Tlale collaborated
with "LEGIT" and designed a diffusion line {Van
der Tlale} for two seasons Spring and Fall/12. The
journey went on when Tlale was "NOT" on schedule
for MBFW New York but, he presented his 1st
solo Ready-to-Wear Fall/12 Collection at the
South African Consulate premises in New York
City during Fashion Week.
In 2010 Tlale continued his movement, he showcased
at Mid-night the "Butter-Fly" Collection that
blew the media, fashionistas, buyers and crowds
away during the World Cup tournament at the
Africa Fashion week 2010 Johannesburg "South
Africa" his creativity lead to Tlale to be hailed the
"King of Fashion in SA.
It was in 2011 when Tlale closed the "Iconic Nelson
Mandela Bridge" in Johannesburg to present
his Fall 2011 Collection with 92 Models comprising
not only run-way models but, celebrities,
sports personalities that make South Africa to be
as colorful as it is; that completed the commemoration
of celebrating Nelson Mandela's 92nd
birthday in style… Later in the same year the
South African Mint approached Tlale to collaborate
his "Climate Change" Collection, and Minted
a Coin in Tlale's Honor. Not only that, but closed
part of the Mint to prepare for the spectacular
Collection during the Africa Fashion Week that
year.
Surely 2011 was the year that Tlale celebrated the
opening of his 1st ever flagship boutique at the
Michael Angelo Towers in Sandton, Johannesburg.
This move re-affirmed that the "Tlale movement"
goes on…
Tlale's daring and bold, his brand is the one that
defies convention and impenitently employs unpredictable
use and understanding craftsmanship,
fabric, color and texture.
After he gained interest from the international
media and customers, Tlale pursued to be on
schedule and was accepted by IMG at Fashion
Week. Tlale presented in September 2012 his
debut Spring/13 ready-to-wear Collection at the
Lincoln Centre in the BOX during Mercedes-Benz
Fashion Week New York; courtesy of the National
Empowerment Fund in South Africa. These were
moments of celebration and appreciation to "The
Almighty", as Tlale was the 1st South African designer
To show-case solo on schedule at fashion
week.
As 2013 marks the celebration of the ‘Tlale decade”
He continued to present his 2nd Collection
at Lincoln Centre New York in February 2013 his
“Decadence” Fall/13 Collection. Tlale took the
“Decadence” collection on tour to South Africa
and show-cased during the ‘Mercedes-Benz Fashion
Week Joburg’ in March 2013 and exhibited
his works of art at the Gauteng Legislature Piazza,
and Launched a hand bag range that is sold
nation-wide in South Africa. Tlale has continued
the tours in different countries and his
“movement” goes on.
Fashion Day Out
Following Zambia Fashion Week was an initiative of
the Zambia Fashion Council – Fashion Day Out – an
event that created an opportunity for the public to
have a feel of – and purchase – pieces fresh off the
runway, and also just for fashion enthusiasts to interact.
Winners Circle Association were on hand to add
an educative element to the event by hosting a series
of ‘Think Tank’ sessions throughout the day, with panelists
such as Stan Kaseke of Woolworths Zambia as
well as Christina and Donna of Kamanga Wear.
It was great to see some of Zambia’s vibrant fashionistas
turn up in their numbers, as well as the random
passers-by that just wanted to know what was going
on.
We bring you, Fashion Day Out in pictures.
1.Foundation/concealing dark skin:
For dark skin, the foundation to be used must be
water–based. Dark skin is always to look oily,
and using cream foundation will worsen the skin
even more. Foundation makeup includes concealer,
foundation, and powder.
2. Eye Makeup for dark skin:
Dark Skin Makeup Tips
While applying eye makeup, go for dark colors
like browns, prunes, copper and burgundy. Dark
metallic colors can also be used. A dust of translucent
powder over eye shadows is more than
enough for a smooth glow for an evening party.
It is better not to use eyeliner for dark complexion
as it may spoil the look of eyes if not applied
properly. Only natural and clear color mascara is
good for dark complexion skin.
3. Blush for dark skin:
Many people still feel and believe that makeup looks
good only on fair skin. Surprisingly, makeup can look
just as flattering on dark skin. The key is to know
what particular makeup to use. Irrespective of any
skin tone it is always advised to highlight the inner
glow of the skin and keep the makeup less.
Cleanse tone, moisturizes and scrubs your skin, then
apply the concealer, foundation, and the powder to
create a smooth base. Avoid cosmetics that are honey-based
as it could make dark skin look yellow, ex-
Choose rose, deep orange and coral shade blushes
for dark tone skin and avoid brown and peach
shades. For a very dark skin tone, one can
choose dark rose for the day and plums, wine
and bronze shades for evening. For night, shimmers
with gold tone blends well with dark complexion
skin.
4. Lip color for dark skin:
Avoid frost finish lipsticks and choose matte finish
ones. Choose shades like browns, burgundy,
berry shades, plums, beige, soft pink and gold.
There are many lip colors like chocolate and
coffee colors that look great on dark skin tone.
Health
The hush-hush festive season weight... The Detox therapy
It’s post festive season and our jeans are getting
a little too tight. Back to work and normal daily
routines but after all the fun, The wardrobe
seems to start malfunctioning and getting back to
that work out regime isn't easy at all.. Well don’t
despair there is a secret called detox. You can still
shed a little fat by getting rid of all thosed toxins
accumulated during that time of reunions and
bliss and cheer. The market has a lot of non pocket
friendly alternatives but my mother taught me
one inexpensive DIY kitchen recipe that has
worked for decades for her, me and the family Of
course.. It is all centered around a citric fruit
called the Lemon ^ I know right, I was Trying
make it sound cooler but yes our every day Lemon..The
recipe is simple also, you take it freshly
squeezed every morning before any meal and you
start with four (4) lemons and keep increasing daily
by four (4) lemons till you get to 24 daily by
four (4) lemons till you get to 24 and then start
decreasing daily by our lucky number four (4).. So
you detox plan should look a little like this
Day one-4 lemons
Day two-8Lemons
Day five-20 lemons
Day six- 24 lemons
Day seven- 24 lemons
Day eight- 20 lemons
Day nine- 24 Lemons
Day ten- 121emons
Day eleven- 8Lemons
Day twelve- 41emons
And viola you're done.. 12 days later you've lost
from 2-4kilos your system is clean, skin feels great
and your wardrobe can survive.^ Detoxing has
many benefits including making your body very
susceptible to conceive so ladies there you have it,
the effective and easy way to kill many birds with
one stone... Remember to drink two litres of water
every day it works wonders for a healthy body and
clear clear acne free skin and ofcourse toxin free
body... Measure yourself while youre at it..
My Two Cents
2016 fashion resolution
1. I will feel perfectly OK about
spending money on accessories
I always always ALWAYS avoid spending money
on accessories (especially jewellery), even
though I have preached to the masses on MANY
occasions that accessories are not only a worthy
investment, but they have the power to
completely change an outfit. Yes, I am a hypocrite,
and in 2016 I feel like that is something I
should work on.
2. I will find and buy the perfect leather
jacket
I’ve been saying this for about the last 3 years,
but leather jackets are expensive and my taste
is irritatingly particular. I vow that 2016 will be
the year that I will find AND purchase the best
ever perfect leather jacket and will live out my
days happily knowing that I have done so. This
one by Veda or this one by Acne are currently
at the top of my list, if someone would like to
donate.
3. I will find and buy the perfect woollen
overcoat
The exact same sentiments apply for a long
woollen overcoat as the ones I have expressed
for the leather jacket. Preferably, this coat will
be calf length, slim fitting and black.
4. Wear heels more often
I have kind of put heels in the “fancy pants”
basket and never really taken them out. As in,
I’ll only wear them when I’m going somewhere
special and every other day is reserved for flat
boots, sandals or sneakers. Now, I work in an
office full of women at one of the world’s biggest
magazines so you would THINK that if
there was one workplace in the whole world
which would be conducive to my wearing high
heeled shoes on the daily, it would be this one.
Alas, I just always feel too dressed up and cringe at
the thought of people saying “Oooooh look at you
all fancy!” as soon as I walk through the door. I’m
also really short so heels would actually do me a
big fat favour. So that’s the plan – wear heels more
often, not because I have to, but because they look
really nice and
yolo.
5. Spend less on cheap stuff/Invest in the good
stuff
My wardrobe is like 85% cheap, which isn’t necessarily
a good thing. Not because cheap sucks, it is
actually the opposite of sucky. But we all know it
isn’t exactly the best quality. So if 85% of my wardrobe
is actually just rubbish where does that leave
me? It leaves me in a dump, that’s where. 2016 I’m
going to buy less but spend more.
37

8. Be a little less casual on the weekends
I literally become a whole different person on the
weekend. I go from work Nikki to weekend Nikki
and I feel like work Nikki would be really disappointed
with weekend Nikki’s efforts. Fact is, I just
like to be comfortable, dammit! But I feel like if I
just styled up my basic tee-dresses a little better
rather than just throwing on a pair of Birkenstocks
and calling it a day, I may feel a little more confident
in the fact that people think that I look nice.
6. Stop contemplating things I really LOVE
and just buy them so that I don’t hate
myself by the time said item has sold out
world-wide.
I do this ALL the time and I drive myself insane. I
see a thing that I want to buy, when it’s available
to buy, and because I am a non-risking-taking
Taurean, I um and ahh about it until it is no longer
available anywhere in the entire world. Case in
point: these Miu Miu sandals. In 2016 if I love the
shit out of something, I am buying it ASAP and
saving myself the tears.
7. Throw out every single pair of “daggy”
knickers and replace them for sexy/cute/
grown up knickers.
I feel like this one is also kind of a gift to my husband,
who is such a trooper and tells me I am
beautiful and sexy even when I am in tracksuit
pants and an old jumper. But mainly, I just want
to feel a bit more gown up and I feel like this is a
pretty good place to start. These are a great introduction,
what with their business in the front,
party in the back thing going on.
Travel: Tiffany’s Canyon a weekend getaway
Set in the country side of Chilanga, this place is
