MUTUAL MATERIALS COMPANY
Our story begins with the
Great Seattle Fire of 1889
that destroyed over 30
acres of the downtown
business district. The only
building left standing after
the fi re was built with
brick. Before the smoke
cleared, a city ordinance
was passed declaring that
all buildings and sidewalks
in Seattle had to be made
of fi reproof materials.
Workers from all over
the United States came
to Seattle to help rebuild,
including Daniel Houlahan,
a bricklayer from
California. And, in 1900 he
went on to found Builders
Over the past century,
we are more aware than ever
of the responsibility we have to
maintain our natural resources.
WHY BRICK?
Choosing the right siding for your home is a decision with lasting impact.
You want your home to have curb appeal, style, personality, and
longevity. Brick is the only siding choice that offers you
all of these benefi ts in one.
STYLE
Brick is multi-dimensional. Unlike stucco or
siding, brick allows you to achieve virtually
any architectural design through a variety of
complementary shapes, colors and textures.
Whether you are building a new house or
remodeling your existing home, brick options
range from full veneer, to creative details that
show-off your personal style, to accents such as
arches and quions.
QUALITY
Quality is something that each of us innately
understands. We might not be able to defi ne it,
but we know it when we see it. Your home tells
the world who you are and what you value. With
thousands of years of proven performance,
building with brick is building for generations.
MAINTENANCE SAVINGS
Brick never needs painting or sanding. Brick won’t
rot, fade, peel, or dent. In fact, brick actually
improves with age. Think of the time, energy and
money you save never painting again.
ENERGY CONSERVATION
As a natural insulator, brick is slow to absorb or
lose heat. You’ll be warm in the winter and cool in
the summer, all while saving money on fuel bills.
FIRE RESISTANCE
Made from clay fi red at nearly 2,000°F, brick is
the most fi re resistant siding material available.
Because of this feature, many insurance
companies offer reduced rates for brick homes.
RESALE VALUE
According to Marshall & Swift’s Residential Cost
Handbook, if and when you decide to sell your brick
home, it will command a higher price, making your
initial investment a very wise one indeed.
VENEER
Craftsman, Tudor, cottage,
contemporary —brick is all of these.
Whether you want to build a home entirely of
brick, or add drama with accent elevations
or wainscoting, brick is an excellent choice.
Used alone or in combination with another
material, brick’s range of color and texture
options will make your vision a reality.
Ebony and Red Varitone Cedar Creek
INTERIOR
Brick brings a feeling of hospitality and
warmth to interior spaces. Adding brick to
an accent wall, fi replace, kitchen, or wine
cellar turns ordinary spaces into works of
art. Whether your fi replace is wood burning
or natural gas, brick is not only aesthetic
but a functional material.
OUTDOOR
FEATURES
To extend the architectural design beyond
the four walls of your home, use brick on
fencing, pillars, lampposts, planters, and
entries. It will withstand the elements,
never rotting, fading, or peeling.
locations. Our products can also be found at building material retailers
and lumberyards throughout the United States and Canada.
Visit www.mutualmaterials.com to fi nd a location near you.
Can I install my own project?
Yes. However, we recommend hiring a qualifi ed mason for more diffi cult
projects such as veneer, architectural details, tall structures, and
fi replaces.
Does Mutual Materials offer installation services?
No. But we can recommend a number of qualifi ed masons. Please call
our customer service line and we will gladly refer you to several longstanding
masons in your area. We encourage you to bid your project
with several contractors and check with the State to verify a contractor’s
license and bond.
How do I clean the new masonry I installed?
For brick, natural stone and Robinson Rock , Mutual Materials sells a
variety of cleaners developed to remove latent mortar from masonry
surfaces. Mutual Materials customer service can recommend the right
cleaner for your project. Follow directions on label for best results.
Cultured Stone ® should not be cleaned with any materials containing
acids. For best results, carefully clean as you go and dry brush excess
mortar before it sets.
Should I apply a water repellent to my new masonry project?
Masonry exposed to weather should receive a water repellent coating
once the masonry is cured (usually 28 days). This will help keep your
masonry looking new. Mutual Materials can recommend the right water
repellent for your project. Avoid any sealers that contain acrylics.
What type of maintenance do masonry products require?
Brick, natural stone, Cultured Stone ® , and Robinson Rock require very
little maintenance. Occasional brushing or hose rinsing should suffi ce.
Avoid the use of any acidic materials, as they may damage masonry.
Please do not pressure wash Cultured Stone ® , as you risk voiding the
warranty. To avoid impacting the color of the stone, Owens Corning ® also
warns against the use of dust removal products (Endust ).
COMMON QUESTIONS
WE HAVE THE ANSWERS
What is the white fi lm on my masonry / natural stone, and will
it go away?
The white deposit you see is called efflorescence. There is no need
to be concerned that your product is damaged or defective, and
it has no adverse effect on the physical structure of the product.
Efflorescence is normal on clay and concrete masonry, as well as
on some natural stone. It may appear on the surface of new and
older projects alike, and is a naturally occurring phenomenon. It
occurs with leaching of salts that are deposited on the surface
when water evaporates. Efflorescence can correct itself over
time and exposure to the elements. It can also be cleaned with a
number of commercial cleaners. However, we recommend that you
discuss cleaning options with your contractor or a Mutual Materials
customer service representative before attempting to clean
efflorescence.
Can masonry products be used to remodel my
existing home?
Yes. Masonry products are excellent for home makeovers. Cultured
Stone ® and Robinson Rock can be installed without the need for
supporting foundation. Brick and natural stone will require additional
support from either a below-grade footing or an attached steel angle.
What is the difference between Natural Stone and
Cultured Stone ® ?
Natural stone, as its name implies, is made by nature and cut at quarries.
Cultured Stone ® is cast in molds taken from carefully prepared natural
stone. Each color and texture uses its own blend of portland cement,
lightweight natural aggregates and iron oxide pigments.
What is the difference between Robinson Rock and
Mutual Materials ® natural stone?
Robinson Rock is natural stone that has been cut into thin pieces
allowing it to be installed without a supporting foundation. Our natural
stone comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors and averages
3" to 5" thick.
