gear for a 2017 release date, according to Variety, who spoke with MGM
CEO Gary Barber and Sylvester Stallone on the subject of the new film. According
to the Italian Stallion himself, the franchise’s next installment could
take place in the past, allowing Rocky and Apollo Creed to reunite: “Think
of ‘The Godfather 2.’ ” If execs do end up aiming for 2017, that could mean
Creed’s Ryan Coogler would be out as a director, since—see above—he’d
be busy with Marvel’s Black Panther, out early 2018.

Up-and-comer Chadwick Boseman (42, Black Panther) will star as attorney/civil-rights
pioneer Thurgood Marshall in the legal drama Marshall, the
sixth feature film from House Party director and Django Unchained producer
Reginald Hudlin. The film will focus on a case early in Marshall’s career,
long before he became the Supreme Court’s first African-American justice.
Jacob Koskoff (Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth) collaborated with his trial lawyer
father Michael Koskoff on the script, and Thurgood Marshall’s estate has
given their full cooperation to the film’s producers.
Breaking Glass Pictures added the dark comedy My Big Night, from
Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia (The Last Circus, Witching & Bitching), to
its 2016 slate. The film centers on the less-than-smooth preparations for
a TV network’s New Year’s Eve spectacular. Blanca Suárez (I’m So Excited!,
The Skin I Live In) and I’m So Excited!’s Hugo Silva star alongside Spanish
musical superstar Rafael. A theatrical release is slated for this April.
