MAKINI STUDENT WINS UNITED
NATIONS COMPETITION
In a letter received from the Minister
of Education, Professor Sam Ongeri,
Makini School was delighted to learn
that two students from Makini Schools’
primary section were declared winners for
Kenya in the United Nations International
Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) East
African Essay and Drawing Competition.
Nine-year-old Makini student Derrick
Macakiage was declared the overall
winner in the Drawing category which was
for primary schools and he was followed
10-year-old Jeremy Biwott in second place.
These students worked on their drawing
from the first academic term, thereafter
submitting their entries in August 2010.
Their hard work and dedication paid off as
Derrick was flown to Arusha, Tanzania, on
an all-expenses paid trip by the Tribunal,
where he received his first prize of a laptop
as well as a desktop computer for Makini.
Jeremy also won a laptop.
In a letter signed by the Assistant Secretary-
General of the Tribunal, Mr. Adama
Dieng, all winners and participants of
the competition were congratulated
and appreciated for their support and
involvement in making the competition a
success.
Asked to describe his drawing, Derrick
Macakiage said “the picture was a
courtroom, with a prisoner who was the
accused, a judge in a white wig and two
policemen on each side of the courtroom.
The top left of the picture was of a photo
taken of the prisoner stealing a woman’s
handbag. On the bottom left was a
policeman beside a small cell. On the
bottom right was a policeman beside the
door as well as a group of lawyers.”
On hearing that he had won, he said
“I felt happy, surprised and nervous at
the same time because I thought I had no
chance of winning.”
The award ceremony on October 25th
2010 was attended by among others the
President, Registrar, Prosecutor, judges and
other staff of the International Criminal
Tribunal of Rwanda, Ministers of Education
and the Secretary General of the EAC.
MAKINI SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL SOCCER
SUCCESS
Hot on the heels of the World Cup conclusion
and the start of the English Premiership; Makini
School sent three youthful soccer teams to
Manchester, England, to participate and hopefully bag
medals in the recently concluded Keele Youth Soccer
Tournament, formerly the Umbro Cup. This is on the
backdrop of the school’s previous international sports
successes, where students have won medals for their
exemplary display of talent in various sporting activities
in the international arena. These include last year’s silver
medal win by Samuel Ndonga in a swimming meet in
South Africa, and George Mumo’s Bronze medal win in
Korea’s World Junior Tae Kwon Do competition earlier
this year.
Makini School sent under 11, under 12, and under
13 soccer teams to compete in the hotly contested July
event, playing other teams from Nigeria, India, Egypt,
Sweden, Japan, Spain and the host country England
among others.
The under 13 team reached the semi-final of the
tournament after scoring a total of 10 goals in matches
played against Spain, England, Sweden, Japan, and
Nigeria. With their third place finish, they bagged the
bronze medal in their category. The under 11 team also
managed a third place win, bagging the bronze medal
after scoring a total of 27 goals in matches played
against teams from USA, Egypt, and even Kenya. In
this category Makini’s Paul Ndunga was the top scorer
managing a total of 13 goals.
The Makini and the Nigerian Greenfields teams were
the first formal school teams to reach the semi-finals. The
other teams comprised of the best selection of players
from prestigious soccer academies.
The total goals scored by all three Makini School
teams during this year’s tournament was an impressive
49 goals which was a great improvement for these teams
earning them recognition as one of the most improved
performers in the tournament overall.
Encouraging and nurturing both academic and co
–curricular activities are some of the things that the
Makini School management focuses on. Now with
the prestigious certificates handed to the youthful
players by the Manchester United management during
the tournament, this support will only serve as further
encouragement to these rising soccer stars as they
attempt to emulate international world-class players.
COMMUNITY SERVICE BY THE
PRESIDENT AWARD SCHEME (PA)
MEMBERS ON 2ND OCTOBER, 2010 AT
ST. NICHOLAS CHILDREN’S HOME
The President’s Award (P.A) is a
youth empowerment scheme that
seeks to build the character of
the youth ensuring they remain
productive in society. The scheme is
divided into three sections namely
Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.
To attain each of these awards,
the following are the ventures that
must be successfully undertaken by
the individual student:
• The student must serve the
society by helping the needy
through free service delivery
• The student must develop his/
her special skills (talents) in a manner
visible to the President Award Scheme
assessors
• The student must prove a notable level
of physical fitness
• The student must go for an adventurous
expedition corresponding with the
level of award being sort.
At the moment, 44 Makini School students
are active members of the scheme and
in a bid to accumulate points in the
bronze category they visited St. Nicholas
Children’s Home for community service on
October 2nd. This allowed the students to
be of service to the less privileged in the
community as well as earning them the
much-needed points.
St. Nicholas is a children’s home that caters
for orphans and other needy children. The
home currently cares for about 270 children
and other underprivileged members of
society who are at different academic levels
ranging from primary to university.
TERM 3 VISITORS
The home relies solely on handouts from
well-wishers for food and educational
requirements. Through generous
contribution the children have been able to
start up various income-generating projects
and activities including poultry and dairy
farming.
The 44 Makini President’s Award Scheme
members donated foodstuffs including
maize and wheat flour, sugar, rice, green
grams and clothing. Apart from the
donations, the P.A members assisted in
splitting and storing firewood, cleaning the
dining hall and the chapel, and engaging
in various sporting activities with the
children.
The trip was a great success as the students
got a chance to engage in community
service in line with the requirement of the
office of the President’s Award Scheme.
They also learnt to relate with the less
privileged in the society, putting smiles on
their faces with their generous donations.
