Infuriating news first. The Public Petitions Committee 

for the Scottish Parliament recently rejected an 

LGBT-inclusive policy for schools. The petition, organised 

by TIE (Time for Inclusive Education) failed to sway 

MSPs across the parties as Parliament couldn’t “force” 

local authorities to change their educational stance. 

What the hell was Section 28 of the Local Government 

Act, then? This would have been a step just beyond the 

repealing of that (just 12 years ago) but the reversal of 

some of that damage, a message of support and hope to 

subsequent generations of our community. Tie cofounder 

Liam Stevenson has described this as “a setback, 

nothing more” and will continue to campaign. He is also 

standing as a candidate for the RISE party at the next 

election, with a clear and determined focus on wider 

LGBT issues. 

Mhairi Black, MP for Paisley, came under fire from a 

nasty little homophobic Twitter attack, being described 

by a user as a “gruff old lezzer”. She responded beautifully 

to tell “any gay women who see or receive abuse 

like this [to] please know it’s not normal and it’s not ok. 

#LGBT”. 

Of course as Feb comes around, some of us are all a-flutter 

with love, some stress about what to buy for loved 

ones and some of us (me included) tend to become even 

more embittered than usual. If Valentine’s Day is too 

much to cope with, think back to the original Roman festival 

all the nonsense is based on, Lupercalia (The Festival 

of the Wolf). Why not host an orgy, run around in 

goatskins and whip bystanders with branches to promote 

fertility? No? Makes as much sense as a stuffed 

bear holding a heart. For fellow cynics, LGBT Health & 

Wellbeing will be hosting a Men’s Valentines Horror 

Night on 11th Feb. 

Maybe you’d rather punch someone? KnockOut Glasgow 

have announced more upcoming dates. The first two 

sessions of each month (Sat 6th Feb and Sat 5th Mar) will 

focus on conditioning and getting fit while learning some 

boxing skills. The last two sessions of each month (Sat 

20th Feb and Sat 19th Feb) will be about learning techniques, 

in which participants can learn to box or improve 

on existing skills. £5 per session, 11am-12.30pm at John 

Paul Sports Centre, Summerston. 

Terence Higgins Trust will be encouraging people across 

the UK to Toss Off for them on Pancake Day, Tue 9th Feb.

Art for Artsake 

The Xmas lights are switched off, 

the trees are packed away or recycled 

for another year. Around 

the country scores of performers, crews 

and production teams are returning 

from their annual visits to Pantoland. 

Theatres are now launching the spring 

and summer programmes as they count 

the profits that pantos have poured into 

their coffers, meanwhile we at ScotsGay 

got a snap shot of pantos and shows 

around the country this past festive period 

so let’s get to those reviews. 

Priscilla Queen of the Desert Review: 

The Playhouse in Edinburgh traditionally 

close out the year with the biggest and 

best productions (Wicked in 2014 and 

the recently announced Mamma Mia to 

close out 2016) so it was an interesting 

choice to bring Priscilla Queen of the 

Desert back for a third visit and place in 

the lucrative Xmas slot. 

It’s a choice that has paid off. In my last 

review of the show, I criticized the lack 

of investment in the show, with a second 

rate and technically inferior Pricilla Bus 

being used. I’m glad to say the show has 

been updated and given a brand new 

Bus which truly shines in all its LED glory. 

As this production is an additional stop 

to the UK Tour, the principal cast including 

Duncan James (due to already being 

booked for Panto at the Southampton 

Mayflower) was not available therefore 

drafted back into to play Tick is Jason 

Donovan (on his third visit to Edinburgh 

in the role) who actually breathes new 

life into his until now rather tired performance 

as Tick. He seems to be thoroughly 

enjoying his short return to the 

role of gay father craving the acceptance 

of his son. Also joining him in the leads is 

UK tour regular Simon Green (No not 

Betty Legs Diamond) as a wonderfully 

emotional Bernadette- a transgender 

lady putting her drag queen past to work 

in order to find love on their journey 

across Australia. Finally, newcomer to 

the role of Adam is the gorgeous Adam 

Bailey who is no stranger to high heels 

having appeared in the off West End revival 

of Taboo. He brings an innocent and 

naive charm to the character whose stupidity 

serves to hurt others until a shock 

forces him to grow up a little. 

Also joining the cast exclusively for the 

Edinburgh run are Karen Dunbar in the 

role of Shirley (which is really a one song 

cameo with a comedy bra put to full 

effect) which while fun for the brief time 

we see her is actually a wasted 

opportunity. Also joining the company 

for Edinburgh in the role of Bob the mechanic 

that gets Priscilla across the outback 

is Gavin Mitchell (he of Still Game 

fame) who rather than give into the 

temptation of comedy overdrive actually 

delivers an understated and honest performance 

that drives the character to 

new depths of honesty and likability - job 

well done. 

The show retains all its old charm, glorious 

costumes, stunning choreography 

and some of the best disco and pop hits 

from the last 40 years. It’s a truly fun 

night at the theatre and adds to any 

party night out. With James Duncan set 

to return to the Glasgow stop of the 

show it will be a must see party 

extravaganza so don’t miss out.

James returning to the role of Tick)

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 

Review (Glasgow King’s Theatre): 

The King’s Theatre Glasgow returns to 

opulent and family based pantomime 

following last year’s lackluster attempt 

at Peter Pan with this glitzy production 

of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 

from the pen of the production director 

and panto legend Eric Potts. 

Telling the familiar story of Snow White 

who is the fairest in the land much to the 

chagrin of the Wicked Queen, this particular 

production gives the show a healthy 

dose of Glasgow Patter and draws on a 

local cast which includes rather remarkably 

the return of Gregor Fisher (Rab C 

Nesbit) to panto after a length break. 

Gregor is on top form and pays affectionate 

tribute to the legends of the 

King’s past with an entrance set to Francie 

and Josie’s theme music and the cry 

of “Hello there!”. It’s a special moment 

indeed. His Hector is a character that has 

more than just a little of Rab C in him but 

it’s so much the better for it. 

Joining Gregor in the role of Muddles is 

Des Clarke in his fourth panto outing. 

Des, while likeable, tries far too hard to 

emulate the great Gerard Kelly, which 

doesn’t work. Clarke is in a difficult 

DILF - lightful

KaleidoScot catches up with James 

Hurrel, who started one of Scotland’s 

most popular gay men’s 

nightclub, DILF, and finds out what’s it all 

about. 

KaleidoScot: DILF: What’s it all about? 

James: DILF is a sweaty dance party 

aimed at gay men, currently hosting 

monthly club nights in Glasgow and Edinburgh. 

We recently held our Glasgow Festive 

Bash Party at The Poetry Club where we 

had over 400 guys spread over three 

rooms. Our guest DJ from London Wes 

Baggaley served up a mix of disco and 

some choice classic pop, and residents 

DJ Eddy Murf and guest DJ Christian provided 

Club Classics. 

The night was packed with hot bare 

chested men, their hands in the air right 

up until the lights went out. Grrr 

The name DILF is the male version of a 

popular slang acronym that most people 

are familiar with, it’s a bit naughty and 

meant in a very tongue-in-cheek way. 

KaleidoScot: Who goes to the party? 

James: DILF events attract a huge range 

of guys and as we encourage self-expression 

we see a lot arrive or change into 

fetish wear, leather, rubber, sports kit or 

dancing in their pants! It’s all going on! 

Most dress casually in jeans and t-shirt 

although ‘Taps-Aff’ inevitably occurs and 

there are others who go to great lengths 

creating their ‘outfits’ – they add a real 

fun vibe to the party, it’s definitely fun. 

It’s a very friendly and ‘up for it’ crowd, a 

lot of whom I’ve known for many years, 

so it’s lovely to have their support. It’s 

also attracting a lot of new faces every 

month, and it’s great to see people interacting 

and making new friends – as word 

spreads, the audience is definitely growing. 

KaleidoScot: Any interesting or fun stories? 

James: I’d been talking about booking a 

live act to perform at the event and with 

the help of Bobby Gibson from The Waterloo 

Bar who managed to connect me 

with one of my favourite Scottish vocal 

dance divas, Mary Kiani, currently residing 

in Sydney Australia who, I may add, 

is a HUGE gay icon there and a bit of a 

star in a lot of people’s eyes here at 

home. 

She was excited to hear about our DILF 

party and wanted to know more as I had 

previously worked for her when she 

owned the nightclub SLAVE here in Glasgow 

back in the late nineties. 

She warmly agreed to come and “perform 

for the boys” her words btw and 

gave a fantastic performance interacting 

with the audience, telling them she was 

actually a MILF and generally giving us 

some great patter in-between belted out 

some top dance tunes and even treating 

us by singing one of her greatest hits as 

an encore impromptu and acapella 

“WOW she has some pair of chops” I 

heard someone remark! 

The reaction from that night and the 

buzz from working with a professional 

like Mary has given me an appetite for 

more live acts so watch this space! 

KaleidoScot: What are our plans for the 

future? 

James: We plan to keep building on our 

success here in Scotland and have now 

launched DILF as a monthly event on the 

last Fri of the month at Studio 24 in Edinburgh. 

After the success of parties held in Sep 

and Nov we’ve been inundated with enquires 

so we hope support continues to 

grow – we’ll be inviting guest DJs to play 

here and hope to incorporate the live 

acts as well, keeping it relevant and 

fresh. 

Glasgow-wise we hope to grow the 

event each month as numbers increase 

and intend to work hard to ensure each 

party is as memorable as the last and 

look forward to celebrating our first 

birthday party in May to coincide with 

the launch of our website.

position as many compare him to Kelly 

automatically when they should just let 

him be himself. Clarke could help by 

playing the role his way rather than how 

Kelly would have done. 

Juliet Cadzow is bad and rotten to the 

core in an excellent performance as the 

Wicked Queen although it’s obvious in 

one of her numbers she is lip synching 

but that aside she delivers in spades. 

With Jenny Douglas as Snow White and 

the gorgeous and vocally talented Allan 

Jay as Prince rounding out the principal 

cast. 

With a full cast of two dwarf actors and 

two teams of panto babes, stunning 

sets, costumes, comedy and all the 

latest pop tunes this is a winning production 

and, although the Ghost Busters 

scene is a bit outdated, it still adds 

charm. Now the King’s have built 

momentum let’s home their 2016-17 

panto can capitalize on it further.

King’s Theatre Glasgow, Run Ended 

Peter Pan Review (SECC Clyde 

Auditorium): 

Glasgow is a lucky city with three major 

pantos on offer. Both King’s Glasgow 

and the Pavilion have panto not to mention 

various local companies producing 

panto in the smaller venues and the 

city’s biggest venue the Clyde 

Auditorium are offering Peter Pan for 

their audiences’ delight. 

Following a well-documented departure 

of local boy John Barrowman last year, 

the Krankies are joined by American 

superstar David Hasselhoff in the role of 

Captain Hook. It’s in that casting that lies 

the production’s biggest problem. 

It was obvious that Hasselhoff was just 

coming off serious knee surgery and 

spent the entire performance limping 

about the stage, although thankfully it 

did actually suit the character. However, 

when David started to sing it was a show 

stopping moment for all the wrong 

reasons: heavily out of tune and in a 

pitch all of his own. When he stops it’s a 

relief, the other issue being that David 

simply because of being American 

doesn’t understand the art form he is 

working in which shows on more than 

one occasion with comedy lines fluffed 

and a driving 

pace that is 

straight out of 

Baywatch and 

Nightrider (both 

of which get a 

look in). 

David aside, 

what remains is a 

solid panto with 

the Krankies taking 

centre stage 

in a comedy 

double tour de 

force aided by Glasgow legend and Pride 

regular Michelle McManus whose 

massive voice fills the auditorium with 

ease. 

The totally beautiful Keith Ramsey plays 

Peter Pan perfectly pitching the child like 

innocence to the right level making him 

likable to the entire audience. With a full 

supporting cast and the signature touch 

of QDOS pantomimes and their 

stunning special effects this is big 

budget panto for the masses that is 

sadly let down by the lead star. 

Let’s hope QDOS learn the lessons here 

and cast the recently announced Aladdin 

at this venue next year with better grace 

and sensibility than this Peter Pan. It’s 

obvious that John Barrowman should 

return and let’s hope he does.

Bizet – Les Pêcheurs de Perles 

Metropolitan Opera live relay 

Jan 16th 2016 

This opera was receiving its first Met 

performance in a century – it will surely 

become a staple in the repertoire, with 

its haunting melodies and exotic, 

delicate sound palette far removed from 

the blood and thunder of Carmen. 

Zurga and Nadir, both in love with the 

Hindu priestess, Leila, agree to renounce 

her and preserve their friendship. A 

veiled priestess is brought to the village 

to pray for the pearl fishers’ safety 

– it is Leila… 

The opera opened with a stunning scene 

of divers descending in streams of 

bubbles to the depths of the sea. The 

singing was superb – Matthew Polenzani 

and Mariusz Kwiecien’s duet ‘au fond du 

temple saint’ predictably stopped the 

show, but their solos, and duets with 

Diana Damrau, were equally 

magnificent, while their delicately 

nuanced acting underlined the 

emotional complexities of their 

situation. The contemporary setting 

didn’t float my boat, but the audience 

roared their approval.

pink look. Fri nights continue to see the 

double club night in full swing, with hip 

hop on the ground floor and Ikandy in 

the Lab. With partying till the small 

hours it makes CC’s the place to be. 

Moving next door to Habana which is 

looking pretty amazing following its 

makeover! With comfy new booths great 

drinks promos and Daz and his team

success. With a plethora of themes already

in the pipeline, the future for Drama 

looks good. Thu nights are also great 

nights in Chalky’s with the Cabaret Night 

featuring the stars of Cilla’s Drag race - 

each week featuring a different star with 

guests. It’s always packed, so be sure to

Next door in The Street, they had the 

Hogmanay party to end all Hogmanay 

parties and following the celebration the 

team launched Friday Night Fish Fry 

which have been a huge success. There 

is no word if the Fish Fry will continue on 

into Feb but its been a successful launch. 

The Street is still packing them in on quiz 

night and of course the Quality Street is 

one of the best places to kick off your pre 

club fun!

Feb marks LGBT History Month, this 

annual celebration of LGBT life, culture, 

counter culture and at its heart the journey 

through the rainbow for many generations. 

There is a wide programme of 

events planned across Scotland in collaboration 

with LGBT Youth Scotland 

and many other partners. One of the 

highlights in Edinburgh is the Laugh Out 

Loud LGBTYS Fundraiser on 16th Feb 

kicking off at 7.30pm in the Stand 

Comedy Club. With host Bruce Devlin 

and guests Susie McCabe and Larry Dean 

already on the bill (with more to be announced), 

it’s going to a belter of a night 

and your support will provide support for 

the generation of tomorrow! For full details

on offer too! Now that the UK Govt looks 

set to ban poppers, you may soon be no 

longer be able to legally odorise your 

rooms but Luke and Jack have enough 

dildos, jockstraps and cock rings to keep 

you going all through the winter season! 

SUCK with PuJazzle and Perry is a new 

night on offer in Dels before Lollipop 

Wednesdays in Polo and of course the 

fabulous and hilarious Bella Houston is 

still on hand with Queenie for karaoke 

every week! I do love a bit of Bella! The 

Riding Rooms has the fabulous Tom 

Harlow crooning and flirting with the 

punters. 

Contra at the Brunswick is still going 

strong for all the lovers of alternative 

music and will soon be joined by a new 

90’s gay dance party night called Lucid. 

Menergy @ AXM returned on 13 th of Jan 

with RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Katya and 

Trixxie Mattell, joined by the amazing 

Divina Di Campo fresh from BBC One’s 

The Voice and of course the fierce menergy 

house Queens, Acid Taint, Miss Tess, 

Jessica Diamond, Anne Phetamine and 

the ferocious Alice Rabbit. AXM also sees 

the return of super hot porn star Jake 

Bass! 

Katie’s Bar an ever-popular haunt with 

the Glasgow gays had a fabulous new 

year with Cheri Treiffel and Jackie G Spot, 

who is also their resident karaoke 

Queen. Katie’s has the amazing Mayhem 

Miller en route soon; I will most definitely 

be coming down to see her! Thanks for 

bringing some amazing talent across the 

pond for us drag fans to enjoy! 

So if you’ve survived Jan, you’ll make it 

through the rest of the year, so get out 

there, be queer and have yourself a good 

time now and again, as you can see there

be pissed as they say (either that or I 

need to find me some new friends). Now 

be honest, how many of you have 

already failed your New Year’s 

resolutions? Believe it or not, I have actually 

stuck to mine! I took a relaxing 

break away to start the year, celebrated 

my sister’s 21st without over drinking 

and found out I can apply for my 

Canadian Work Permit so I can move 

there later this year!!! Anyway, enough 

about this selfish biatch.... On with the 

show! 

This month’s article will look at some of 

the bigger things to come this year as 

well as a look at what’s to come in Feb 

(since Jan is practically or already 

finished, depending when you’re reading 

this). Also this year I have decided to get 

rid of the ‘Funny or Fierce’ photos and 

just include normal pics, most likely 

taken by the fabulous Miss Lisa Gray in 

Cheerz Bar and Club so be sure to get 

your Sun best on and get out there! I’ll 

also not be letting MySTI Moan anymore 

as I realised, she sounds like a miserable 

bitch when she does (we all know she is 

anyway, but let’s just let her keep that in 

her head). 

The big news in Cheerz is the return of 

Miss Cherry Bakewell / Kevin Thorburn! 

That’s right, everybody’s favourite ‘Tart 

with a heart’ is coming back to take over 

our Sun nights! Get your glad-rags/Sun 

best or whatever you wanna call it and 

get out to welcome her back!!! This bitch 

is one of the best this town has and she 

deserves an audience! 

The other big news is that after a dry 

spell (we all know that’s code for rehab) 

MySTI Hole will be starting her own 

weekly games night every Thu! With 

games such as Limbo, Ring Toss (no 

jokes please), Finish the Lyrics and many 

more. I’ve heard there’ll be some lip 

syncing with severe consequences if you 

don’t win For those of you ‘butch’ 

queens that don’t watch ‘RuPaul’s Drag 

Race, the final two contestants have to 

‘Lip Sync for their Lives and one of them 

wins whilst the other inevitably gets 

eliminated from the competition... 

i.e. dies. 

This is setting up to be the best student 

night in town! The night will be running 

from 9pm-Midnight but I know all you 

students like to pre-drink until around 

Midnight and show up for the Kiki (when 

it’s on) so there are some cheap drink 

deals and a cash prize to 

entice you into the bar earlier. 

Feb as some of you may not know (but 

definitely should) is LGBT* History 

Month and our very own GMH will be 

holding some events to celebrate/commemorate 

the achievements we as a 

community have achieved, and those we 

have lost along the way in our fight for 

equality ad against discrimination / 

stigma. See the attached photo for

One of the current heroes of the LGBT* 

community at the moment is none other 

than Miss Ru Paul herself! Through her 

career she has constantly been pushing 

boundaries and really brought drag and 

more importantly (yet perhaps inadvertently)

I am about to compare two trans women 

and show my love for one and my hatred 

of the other other. 

Laverne Cox, basically a nobody until she 

was cast on the hit Netflix show ‘Orange 

Is The New Black’. This girl is working it! 

She owns that character, she owns that 

body, that voice, that brain! She is a 

shining example of Trans women (or at 

this point do I just refer to her as a 

woman?) FYI, that’s not me being rude, 

I too am not 100% educated on trans issues 

and so I would like to know if the 

term ‘Trans’ is to be dropped after the 

transitioning process or even during the 

process. Laverne has also been quoted 

to say that she believes because of 

Caitlyn’s public figure she is making it 

easier for those in that situation to explain 

or make sense of what’s happening. 

However, here’s my beef with Caitlyn 

Jenner. First let me back up a minute. 

Before her transition Bruce Jenner was 

an Olympic medal winner and someone 

to be admired. Then he got into a car 

crash and killed someone (yeah, Google 

it, he killed someone) and... got away 

with it! Where’s the justice in that? (FYI, 

I’m using the name Bruce here as at the 

time of the accident he was still legally 

named Bruce and legally male, she 

changed these legally in Sep). Anyway, 

taking away from that (and forgive the 

upcoming pun), I admire Bruce for his 

balls to say ‘I want to become a woman’. 

Coming out as gay was hard enough so 

genuinely congratulations on the 

strength and bravery that took considering 

you live in the public eye. However, 

now that you are this beautiful Trans 

woman, and again, did I need to add the 

word ‘trans’ there? If we keep the title 

does that mean there are more than 2 

sexes: male, female, trans male, and 

trans female? (See a lot of this stuff is at 

the forefront of the media right now 

because of questions like this). Anyway, 

back to Caitlyn. All I’ve seen her do is 

walk around with those botoxed lips and 

act as a ‘symbol’ for the trans community 

without actually doing anything 

decent (or nothing I hear of anyway, it’s 

all gossip drama and scandal with this 

family). I didn’t like the Kardashians to 

begin with as they’re mindless twits and 

it seems that this wonderfully athletic 

person has decided to use the attention 

she’s getting from her transition to just 

become one of them as opposed to ask 

the tougher questions and push for 

more. *Slowly claps hands* Well done 

Caitlyn, well done.
