We hope you enjoy the latest edition of our
fortnightly newsletter, bringing you a flavour of
all the wonderful things that have been
happening in and around school over the last two
weeks. A special thank you must go to Henry
Grub and Niamh Herrett for the outstanding work
they have been doing to raise awareness of the
‘Don’t Stand By’ campaign from the Holocaust
Education Trust….really inspirational!
The Imberhorne Gardening Club have been
selected to take part in an exciting new project
called ‘Rocket Science’, involving the
planting of seeds after they have travelled
into space.
The seeds, which have spent the last few
months under micro gravity conditions at a
space station, will be received by our students
in March to be planted. Their growth
will be measured under strict conditions
against that of mere earthly seeds and their
progress will be noted to see if they’ve
been affected or whether they grow at all!
BBC News Reporting
From Imberhorne
Monday 18th January had a buzz of excitement
to the day, as a BBC News crew visited
to interview our students for an article due to
be aired in February. Hugh Pym from the
BBC Newsdesk reported from a Year 10
PSHCE lesson and then interviewed a small
group of Year 11’s on the issues surrounding
the emotional and mental well-being of young
people today. Following a government task
force initiative, the news team were interested
to find out from our students what pressures
they think young people face.
Chosen for the work that we completed last
year, piloting resources from the Samaritans
in our PSHCE lessons, we were thrilled to be
invited to take part in this report. Not only
was it a fascinating insight into what goes on
behind the scenes of a national news item, it
also gave our students the chance to voice
their opinion and reflect on an important topic,
something we encourage our students to do
in their fortnightly PSHCE lessons which focus
on a variety of personal, social, health
and citizenship issues.
Mr Turner, leader of PSHCE provision at KS4
said, “the students involved today were a
credit to the school and young people, the
crew were so impressed with their maturity
and awareness. They spoke eloquently about
important
issues and
I’m really
looking forward
to the
report”.
Players of the Match: James Pearse & Matt
“Imberhorne started strongly on the slick 3G
surface but it was Oathall who took the lead
after a few errors from us. After a swift
turnabout at half time and with the score 1:1
Imberhorne dominated the start of the second
half but again fell behind due to a wonder goal
from Oathall. Heads didn’t drop though and
Imberhorne got back in the game. Final score
3:3. What a game, next step St Bedes County
Imberhorne 0 v St Bedes 3
Player of the Match: Lewis Michael
“On a horrible pitch and in horrible conditions Imberhorne’s cup double dream got
washed away in the rain and sleet. After a bright start by our boys, St Bedes took
control scoring two quick goals. Imberhorne had no answer to the gale force winds
and horrendous pitch” Mr Collyer
REMEMBERING THE HOLOCAUST: DON’T STAND BY
By Niamh Herrett and Henry Grub
Listen to Niamh and Henry’s radio broadcast
www.meridianfm.com/listen-again/
In November last year, we visited Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous concentration
and death camp in Poland that was in use during WW2 – 70 years ago. This week,
people across the world have been remembering the genocide on Holocaust
Memorial Day 27th January. The Holocaust is not only a historical event but
something that has repercussions and lessons for us in the modern day.
Many people, over the years since, have said “never again”. Everybody today
recognises the significance of the Holocaust, the sheer number of people
systematically murdered had never been seen before or, thankfully, since. But there
is always the question, “how did the Holocaust arise?” Naturally, it is easy to
attribute the event to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Whilst this is mostly true, it is the actions of the
public, ordinary people, that also had a hand to play.
This is how the Holocaust can teach us such profound lessons today. For it is the actions of us, the ordinary
people, that can help ensure that an event like this never occurs again.
In 21st century Britain, we find ourselves in a complicated web of international crises, which are fuelling
controversial public and political opinions on both sides of the Atlantic and in Europe. Journalists,
columnists and politicians are regularly voicing racist and prejudiced comments and the media is in danger
of indoctrinating people in the UK to support their agenda.
One thing that the Holocaust has taught us, in a broad sense, is the idea that we shouldn’t “stand by”. This
is the theme this year for Holocaust Memorial Day – don’t stand by. In the 40s, victims were taken to the
camps aboard trains. But who drove these trains? The train drivers were not forced to carry out this task;
and they could easy have said no and continued with their usual tasks. If every train driver had said no,
would this not have caused a break-down in the system? It would probably not have prevented the
Holocaust, but it could have caused a delay and saved lives. The lesson here, is that if we speak up, we can
challenge what is wrong and prevent discrimination.
In a wider sense, Auschwitz thus teaches us to challenge acts of prejudice or discrimination, in wider
society and in our local communities, even if unpopular or inconvenient. We must also promote tolerance
of others by recognising the role every member plays in the town, or at a national level. It is also important
that we increasingly learn not to take the media at face value, critically challenge and evaluate what you
read and watch. We must learn to say “I disagree” with what we are exposed to. By accepting intolerance it
will grow, just like it did in the 30s before WW2.
We are very lucky today to live in a democracy. We can be involved in the democratic process of the UK
and we should exercise this, because we need to ensure that we influence the government’s role in global
events. It must not be forgotten the Nazis started out life as an ordinary political party, but because they
were not held to account by the public, they worked their way into a position of ultimate power. By making
sure we engage in our democracy, we keep it as a democracy. We keep it free and fair for the generations
that come after us.
Today, we view the Holocaust as one of the darkest periods of human history. Whilst it is central that we
do not forget those who were murdered, it is of the utmost importance too that we learn from history; so
that from the victims’ deaths there is hope for the future. After all, George Santayana once said; “those who
do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it”.
On 15th January, a group of Year 9 girls attended a Computing and Robotics
Workshop. The session was run by Curiosity Hub, an organisation formed by
the University of Brighton, to
support the promotion of
STEM subjects (Science, Technology,
Engineering and
Maths). Students really enjoyed
the activities and got an
insight into robotics. Mr Sisley
commented on how many girls
will now be inspired to study
the subject further.
Angry Gulls
On 13 th January we held a Year 9 science workshop for our passionate
and talented scientists.
We had two visiting staff from Brighton University, Richard Robinson
and Jonathan Hare, who set up and organised ‘The Angry
Gull Workshop’. The challenges were to make a mechanism to
drop ‘poo’ from a plastic seagull and to calculate the trajectory of
the poo to land on a specific target...a teacher or a pupil.
Toby Chatfield, a Year 9 student said “I liked how much freedom
we had when we were making the mechanism. I thought it was fun
and interesting. The two Scientists who ran the workshop were
passionate which made it even better for us”.
Congratulations to the following students for completing their
Duke of Edinburgh award. A huge commitment is needed for this programme
and we are very proud of their achievements.
Carl Rafala Workhop
Student Review
We were lucky enough to participate in a
wonderful workshop on 22nd January.
We would like to thank our teachers for
providing us with the opportunity and
Carl Rafala for showing us how to creatively
express ourselves through the media
of short story writing.
The day started off with a quick and
helpful crash course in short story writing,
provided by our visiting American
author. This taught us how to structure
and manage our writing, which allowed
us to tap into our inner authors. The
mentoring that Rafala provided gave us
confidence to transform our ideas into a
story.
The rest of the day involved us planning
and developing our thoughts until we
were comfortable and certain that we
could write and elaborate on our stories
well.
Twenty six of our most keen Key Stage 3
creative writers were given the opportunity
to take part in a one day workshop on 22nd
January with published writer Carl Rafala.
The workshop was combined with the composition
of entries to the ‘500 Word 2016’
challenge. This is a prestigious annual
short story competition offered by BBC
Radio 2.
Miss Badshah said “They have all worked
so hard and are thoroughly enjoying the
day”
We look forward to reading a few of the entries
and hope to publish one or two in a
future edition of 'Contact' and on our website.
Please use the following link for more information
on the BBC Radio 2 competition:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00rfvk1
Once we began, Rafala continued to advise
and inspire us with encouraging
words and thrilling concepts to add clever
twists to our work that you wouldn’t
typically expect.
The only way this workshop could have
been better, is to have given us another
day with Rafala as we enjoyed the experience
thoroughly. So all in all, a wonderful
day.
The Year 9 Careers Workshop is on Tue 9th
Feb 9am-11am. We would be really grateful
for volunteers from the Imberhorne
Community to support this event. We like to
have as many volunteers from as many
different career backgrounds as possible to
give our students a wide and varied
overview of career types and industries.
Small groups of students sit with each
volunteer and ask a series of yes/no
questions about their job. After 5 minutes,
they guess what the volunteer’s job is. The
volunteer then talks about what their work
involves, how they came into their career
etc. before rotating round to another group
of students.
If you or someone you know is
interested in ‘volunteering’ then please
get in touch with Mr Jim Turner, our
Careers Officer, jturner@imberhorne.co.uk
or alternatively, Mrs P Hattam, Work
Experience Coordinator,
phattam@imberhorne.co.uk It’s a fun event
for all those involved. Our volunteers have
always enjoyed the experience!
