Carl Rafala Workhop
Student Review
We were lucky enough to participate in a
wonderful workshop on 22nd January.
We would like to thank our teachers for
providing us with the opportunity and
Carl Rafala for showing us how to creatively
express ourselves through the media
of short story writing.
The day started off with a quick and
helpful crash course in short story writing,
provided by our visiting American
author. This taught us how to structure
and manage our writing, which allowed
us to tap into our inner authors. The
mentoring that Rafala provided gave us
confidence to transform our ideas into a
story.
The rest of the day involved us planning
and developing our thoughts until we
were comfortable and certain that we
could write and elaborate on our stories
well.
Twenty six of our most keen Key Stage 3
creative writers were given the opportunity
to take part in a one day workshop on 22nd
January with published writer Carl Rafala.
The workshop was combined with the composition
of entries to the ‘500 Word 2016’
challenge. This is a prestigious annual
short story competition offered by BBC
Radio 2.

Once we began, Rafala continued to advise
and inspire us with encouraging
words and thrilling concepts to add clever
twists to our work that you wouldn’t
typically expect.
The only way this workshop could have
been better, is to have given us another
day with Rafala as we enjoyed the experience
thoroughly. So all in all, a wonderful
day.
