WILD WEST TOUR
A TRIP OF A LIFETIME...
This is an incredible trip that has something for everybody. This ride is over
3100 miles long and covers some of the most beautiful scenery of the
western United States. <strong>Take</strong> your time and see it all on the best way to see
it - on the back of a motorcycle..
TRIP SUMMARY
This ride map takes your from Dallas to Las Vegas and back. On the way, it guides you through such
sights as Santa Fe, NM, The Grand Canyon, the Four Corners area, Zion National Park and Bryce
Canyon, and Durango CO. While this trip can be done in 9-11 days, we suggest taking a more lei-
surely pace of 14 days to make sure that you enjoy all the sights and not rush the trip. This guide will
be broken down into days with most days of riding ranging from 200 - 400 mile. You can do more
riding in any one day, but we wanted to leave time to enjoy the sights.
• Leg One starts off leaving Dallas and heading to Amarillo, TX.
• Leg Two takes you from Amarillo to Santa Fe
• Leg Three guides you up to the Four Corners area and onto Flagstaff and the Grand Can-
yon.
How you
get there is at
least as important
as where you’re
going...
• Leg Four takes you on into the Hoover Dam and Las Vegas.
• Leg Five is on to Zion and Bryce Canyon
• Leg Six continues to Durango
• Leg Seven guides you through Taos and Roswell
• Leg Eight returns the rider back to Dallas.
OUTBOUND: DALLAS TO VEGAS
DALLAS
Dallas is a gateway to the west made popular in TV shows, movies and other media. Around
the world, Dallas and Texas are synonymous. Even though this is the start of the trip and many
people wish to get to riding, don’t forget about the many sights to see while in Dallas from the
somber site of the Kennedy assassination to the site of the hit TV show - there are just too many to
list here. Don’t forget about Dallas’ world class dining, shopping and nightlife.
Also, don’t forget about Fort Worth which is just a short drive away. Visit Sundance square,
which is a vibrant and lively city center or take in the once daily cattle run through the city streets
at the Stockyards. There are many sights to see in Fort Worth.
Suggested hotel and lodging:
Our shop is convienient to both DFW and Love Field. The suggested locations below our
arranged from more expensive to least and all are fairly close to Sport Ryder Rentals Carrollton
Gaylord Resort
The Gaylord is a lovely resort just north of the DFW airport and a short drive from our location. It is
a destination in and of itself...
<strong>Take</strong> <strong>care</strong> on your trip...
While all of this trip is
through areas that are
well travelled, <strong>care</strong> must
be taken while planning
any long ride on a motorcycle.
Check the weather
<strong>care</strong>fully before you go
and each day for that
day’s ride. Bring appropriate
clothing. Some of
the ride is through
sparsely populated areas.
Watch your water, gasoline,
and cell phone
charge - but don’t rely
on your phone. Some areas
have no service.Pack a
tire repair kit. Tire
punctures are the most
likely mechanical failure
to happen on the road, a
a good kit with CO2 cartridges
can be worth its
weight in gold ( all of
our rentals come with
tire repair kits ). Also
take <strong>care</strong> that you do not
bite off more that you
can chew - expect to average
about 50 miles per
hour after stops and
rests have been figured
into your day...

OUT OF DALLAS
Most of the driving between Dallas and
Amarillo is on US 287. As long as you stay
on 287 you are good to go to Amarillo. To
get to 287, take I-35 north toward Denton.
Exit on 469 and take US380 west. When
you reach Decatur, turn on to US287/81
headed toward Amarillo.
PALO DURO CANYON
It is often claimed that
Amarillo
Your first stop on your trip is the main city
in the Texas Panhandle. In the past, Amarillo’s
importance originated from it’s center in the
cattle trade of the old west to the oil boom in the
Texas Panhandle at the beginning of the last
century.
Now, Amarillo and the surrounding Pan-
handle area are a unique blend of two American
eras. There are the working ranches, essentially
unchanged in the day-to-day operations from
the late nineteenth century, and there is a vibrant
twenty-first century economy, providing leader-
ship for the modern west.
If you get a chance and have the time,
check out Palo Duro Canyon. At dusk, the musi-
Palo Duro Cabins
There are two CCC vintage cabins perched on
the rim of the canyon. Though rustic, these cab-
ins have been renovated and have modern heat-
ing and cooling systems. Each cabin consists of
two rooms plus restroom and shower. One room
has a futon that turns into two twin
size beds. The other room has one full size
bed. There are no kitchen facilities, but there is a
table and charcoal grill located just outside.
Cooking is not permitted inside the cabins. Bed
linens and towels are provided. A maximum of 4
persons are permitted per cabin.
In 1933, the C.C.C. built four very small cabins
near the turn-around area of the park. Referred
to as "Cow Camp Cabins", these have been
renovated and are available for rent. Three are
one-room, and one has a second small "alcove"
room off to the side. Each cabin has a full size
bunk bed that sleeps four, a small table with two
chairs, a small refrigerator, and a microwave. A
picnic table and grill are available on the out-
side. Bed linens and towels are not provided.
Also, make sure you keep your fuel level
high and know how far it is until your next gas
some of this area is very remote.
Total mileage here is one of the longest of
leg of the trip and may be where you decide
to break this section in half. We suggest
several places to stay in the text portion of
this guide. Teec Nos Pos is the next com-
munity and the closest to the Four Corners
area where you can stand in four states at
CANYON DE CHELLY
Located in Arizona in the heart of the Navajo
tribal lands, this canyon gets its name from
a bastardization of a Navajo word. Not as
grand as the Grand Canyon, it is nonethe-
less a great place to hike and explore, and
experience the presence of "those who
came before" in an up close and personal
way. Most of the Canyon is off limits to
outsiders--unless you employ a Navajo
guide--as the Canyon and surrounding area
is inhabited by Navajos today.
64
Canyon route

THE GRAND CANYON
Wow! Do they have an erosion problem!!!
There are parts of the Grand Canyon where
the silence is deafening. You can stand near the
rim ( but not too close... ) and close your eyes
and feel the emptiness in front of you. Is it in
your mind or something you can really sense? I
don’t know, but the feeling is there nevertheless.
What to see and do...
There are so many things to do at and
around the Canyon that you are only limited by
time and budget... and what you have reserved
for ahead of time. If you want to raft down the
Colorado or ride burros down the trails ( sorry!
no motorcycles allowed on these trails ) you may
have to reserve in advance and in some cases,
well in advance.
There are many things to do that also take
less time and preparation. There are many short
day hikes around the south rim; however, if you
decide to hike down to the river, please under-
stand and follow all of the guidelines for this
hike. Many hikers become distressed because
they think that the hike is a quick, several hour
trip and do not prepare adequately. Check with
the park rangers for more detail.
A really quick way to see the Can-
yon is by helicopter tour. These can be
arranged at Tusayan which is just a few
miles south of the South Rim Entrance.
). We have pictures from
our stay and there are unexplained
shadows! Spooky!

VEGAS!
So, you made it so far. We are not even going to
begin to go into all the places you can stay or
the things you can do in Vegas. There is just too
much already written and too much to go into
here. Suffice it to say there is plenty to keep you
occupied. So, should you stay for a few days or
continue your ride back - that is up to you to
decide...
THE RIDE BACK...
When you have had your fill of Ve-
gas, then it is time to head back.
This parrt of the ride will take you
I-515
93
through Zion National
Park, Bryce Canyon,
back thru the Four Cor-
ners area, into Durango,
down through Taos and
into quirky Roswell and
then back to Dallas via
Abilene. Make sure your
camera battery charged
as there is much to
see!
OUT OF THE CANYON
Follow 64 south from the Canyon. About
halfway to WIlliams, 180 will head off to the
east. If you want to visit Flagstaff take 180 -
it is a good ride and a more enjoyable road
than 64. But to get to Vegas the quickest,
stay on 64 until you hit I-40 and take it
west. At Kingman, pick up 93 toward
Nevada. There is often traffic and inspec-
tions at the dam, so plan accordingly. After
Boulder City, 93 turns into I-515. Follow I-
515 directly into Vegas.
Directions and maps are informational only. We make no warranties on the accuracy of their content, road conditions or route usability or expeditiousness. You made
it! Now just
wait for the ride
back!
HOOVER DAM
Set aside about half a day for the dam...
The Hoover Dam, no matter how many times
I see it, is always an impressive sight.
If you just have a few minutes, then
still stop and walk around. The two tours
offered take a bit but are worth the time
to see the inner workings and the history
of the dam. Be <strong>care</strong>ful, it can be 70 degrees
in Kingman and 105 at the dam!
INBOUND: VEGAS BACK TO DALLAS
Zion, Bryce, and Torrey, Utah
This is a great segment of the ride, but a
long one. For this reason, even though we show
it as one segment, we actually suggest splitting
this into two days of the trip. There is just so
much to see in Zion National Park, in Bryce
Canyon, and on Utah 12.
Zion National Park is characterized by high
plateaus, a maze of narrow sandstone canyons,
and striking rock towers and mesas making it a
showcase for geology. The arid climate and
sparse vegetation allow the exposure of large
expanses of bare rock and reveal the park’s
geologic history.
OUT OF LAS VEGAS
We don’t know where in Vegas you chose
to stay, so the specific directions show
generally how to get out of Las Vegas. Ba-
sically, get on Interstate 15 and take it north
. You’ll pass through Arizona and into Utah>
Look for St. George because soon after you
will be taking UT9 toward Hurricane and
Zion National Park.
Bryce Canyon is know for it’s unique rock
formations - the “hoodoos” which are formed
when ice and rainwater wear away the weak
limestone surrounding harder rock. Also, Bryce
is known for the darkness of its night skies and
lack of light pollution from nearby population
centers and light sources.
Suggested hotel and lodging:
Since there are several places that might
be good to stop for the night, we are suggesting
lodging for all three...
OUT OF ZION
Zion National Park is a great place to stop
and split this segment in two. Or, you can
keep going on to Torrey, Utah. But don’t
just enjoy the challenging riding through
Zion. Stop, get out and see the many sights
and trails. After you leave Zion, UT9 will hit
while not too many miles, will probably take
most of the day to ride. There are also many
things to see and do and if you start early, you
can probably get it all in. Areas to stop and look
at are Glen Canyon, the Natural
DURANGO COLORADO
Durango was founded in 1880 when
the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad
built a track to Silverton and
established Durango as the hub
of its rail system to transport
ore from the mountains to smelt-
ers in Durango. Durango is
Roswell, Abilene, to Dallas
This ride takes you back into Texas and
toward the end of your ride in Dallas. While it is
a fairly long segment, you should be able to do
it in one day - but don’t push it as you have
been doing quite a bit of riding in this trip.
If you have to stop, Abilene is a good palce
to do it. There is much to see and do and some
very nice places to stay while in Abilene. Check
out Abilene’s historic downtown, “Frontier!
the American West. Many of the
original buildings constructed
You’re finished and back in Dallas!
So how was your trip? You just travelled
over 3100 miles through some of the most re-
markable scenery on the planet. Your ride took
you through six states and through many differ-
ent environments. Some of your driving was
straight, highway driving, but we have taken
great pains to make sure that most of the ride
was on back roads and non-interstate travel.
So what did you see???
Six states, numerous national parks - so
many that I haven’t counted them. Some of it
can be a little overwhelming. But which was the
best? Was it the shear
size and majesty of the
Grand Canyon, or the
more personal and
intimately sized Zion?
Or maybe you en-
joyed Dallas, Las
Vegas and the
more cosmopoli-
tan aspects of
y o u r t r i p . . . O r
maybe, it was the
challenging riding roads
to be found on all segments of the ride.
Isn’t a motorcycle a great way to
travel?
Seriously, everyone talks about the “wind in
your hair,” but, really, isn’t a motorcycle a great
way to do this trip? An recreational vehicle
would be very hard to maneuver through the
many mountain roads. And a rental car - well it’s
just not the same - you don’t get the smell of the
air, the feel of the temperature changes. The car
really takes you out of the experience - rather
than part of the experience, it just becomes a
conveyance. So we hope you enjoyed your trip.
WHY RENT?
We here at Sport Ryder Rentals were recently
asked the question, "Why should I
rent a motorcycle when I can own one?"
For some people the answer will be obvious,
but it's a good question and shows
that motorcycle rental is not for everyone (
but what product is? ). If you are a rider
that rides every day, then motorcycle rental
is not for you - but, there are distinctive
groups of people that make good if not
great rental customers. These reasons that
each group have for rental are listed below
- some of these reasons will be obvious.
Some, maybe not so much...
Reason #1: You want to try out a bike
before you buy. This is a very common
theme for customers that come to us. Motorcycle
dealers do not let you try before
you buy, and if they do, it is only for a short
ride around the parking lot - and what can
you really learn from that??? With motorcycle
rental at Sport Ryder Rentals, you
can rent for a day or longer and really get a
feel for the motorcycle and how you and it
interact. Do you fit with the motorcycle?
Are there certain ergonomic problems that
you have when you ride some distance on
the motorcycle. Do these go away over
time? Do you like the engine, the suspension,
the fit and finish, etc. All these questions
can be answered with sportbike
rental and sport-touring rental at Sport
Ryder Rentals.
Reason #2: YOU may ride every day and
not need a motorcycle rental, but don't you
ever have friends that come in from
out of town to visit and need something
to ride while they are here???
Now you have a choice - before
Sport Ryder Rentals, the only motorcycle
rentals was cruisers. Not
that there is anything wrong with that
type of motorcycle or riding style,
but sometimes it doesn't fit with
what you and your other friends are
riding. We have a rental motorcycle
that fits almost all "styles" of riding.
Reason #3: You don't live here and
you are flying in and want a bike while you
are on vacation in Texas. Maybe you want
to ride the Hill Country, use Dallas as a
gateway to the west, or travel down to Big
Bend - the second largest National Park in
the United States. Check out our ride map
section for more travel ideas. Or maybe
you are here for work and are just sick of
that company car - we definitely have the
solution for you!
Reason #4: You don't ride that much -
maybe 4 or 5 trips a year. Or maybe you
would take a few trips a year, but haven't
wanted to invest in a motorcycle and have
it sit in your garage doing little but depreciating
and needing to be maintained. You
are the perfect rental candidate! It's actually
cheaper for you to rent 4-5 times a
year and have us pay for the depreciation
and maintenance - and you get a new motorcycle
model to ride every year.
[21]
Reason #5: Your wife doesn't let you own
a motorcycle!!! DON"T LAUGH! Actually,
we have a certain group of customers that
fit into this category. Owning a motorcycle
would cause unnecessary friction in the
marriage. Motorcycle rental is a way that
they can keep the peace and get some of
the enjoyment of riding. We say - "Anyway
you can get your fix - take it!"
And finally, you know, for many guys, there
is the option of borrowing a bike from a
friend - and that is always an option. But
be <strong>care</strong>ful and realize that you are not insured
on your friends bike - at all. If you
don't have much to lose, then not having
insurance is not really a big deal - you
can't be sued for what you do not have.
But for those of you that have some assets
- like a house, retirement money, etc., lack
of insurance while riding is a BIG risk. We
are fully insured and full coverage liability (
with a very large umbrella policy ) is included
in our base rental rates.
