Our history began shortly
after the close of World
War I, when members of
the Los Angeles Board of
Education, the Chamber of
Commerce, and business and
labor leaders held a series of
conferences to talk about Los
Angeles’ need for a centralized
vocational training program.
Out of those meetings came the
initial concept of what would
become Trade-Tech, modeled on
a class in power sewing offered
to downtown garment workers.
By the end of 1924, training
programs in “beauty culture”,
printing, plumbing, and the
building trades were offered at
various locations around the
city and briefly consolidated in
a soon to be outgrown building
located at Eighth and Grand
Avenues.
History
History of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College
Trade Tech: 85 Years of Proud History
In the early Spring of 1925, the
Los Angeles Board of Education
created the Frank Wiggins Trade
School, naming it after a
prominent Los Angeles
Chamber of Commerce member
who had been a driving force in
promoting the development of
vocational training. The school
relocated to a new building at
1646 South Olive Street in 1926,
and through the ensuing years
gained a reputation for the
success of its graduates in
industrial careers as well as the
dedication of its faculty and
staff. The advent of World War
II created an exponential
demand for the college’s
training programs in support of
the war effort. The college’s
Aircraft and Welding Trades
departments operated directly
under the supervision of the
Federal War Production Training
Program, while the majority of
other programs were quickly
reformatted to provide shortterm
training of six to ten
weeks’ duration, often at war
production plants located
throughout the city.
LATTC moved to its current
location in 1957. In 1966, an
existing educational institution
with a strong business program,
Metropolitan College, was
merged with Trade-Tech,
resulting in an even broader
range of educational offerings.
Finally, in 1969, LATTC joined
the newly-formed Los Angeles
Community College District
(LACCD), making LATTC one of
the nine colleges that comprise
the District. Today marks our
62nd commencement exercise.

career certificate is truly
a significant accomplishment
when you consider all of the
work and time necessary to
fulfill the requirements.
Now your dreams will begin to
take shape. It doesn’t matter
whether you are entering the
job market or a four-year
university, your path will be in
better focus, your steps toward
your goals will quicken. On the
horizon, will be things you
never thought possible.
Remember what you learned
here at Los Angeles Trade-
Technical College. It will
provide you with a foundation
that will support your lifelong
learning. We know the lessons
captured at this college go
beyond simply the textbooks
and the lectures. We have a
faculty that is committed to
building whole individuals,
students like yourselves who
are trained, prepared and eager.

because I know for many the

pushed through obstacles that

Eric Warren
Keynote Speaker
Eric Warren is from Los
Angeles, California. He is
a graduate of the 1970
Class of Susan Miller Dorsey
High School. Eric went on to
graduate with a Bachelors of Art
degree from Concordia College
in Moorhead, Minnesota. He
began his professional career as
a Radio Marketing Consultant
and ended his career in St.
Louis, Missouri with the
legendary CBS Radio station,
1120 KMOX, and “The Voice of
St. Louis”.
In 2005 Eric was a finalist on
the Food Networks “The Next
Food Network Star”. During his
competition on the Food
Network he placed fifth out of
ten thousand Cooks and Chefs
nationally. In December 2010
Chef Eric appeared on the
Oprah Winfrey Show and in
2011 he appeared on The Oprah
Winfrey Network, in People
Magazine and “O” Magazine.
Eric has completed all of his
graduation requirements at Los
Angeles Trade-Technical
College, Culinary Arts Program,
where he received the Fred J.
Aves Scholarship Award, the
Chef Boyardee Scholarship
Award and the Deans Honors
Award.
Today Eric is employed as a
Personal Chef and has been
married for four years to the
lovely Susan Grayson Warren,
they have three grandchildren.

Dr. Freddie McClain
Dr. Freddie McClain has
been with the Los
Angeles Community
Colleges for over 34 years as an
administrator and faculty
member.
Dr. McClain received his B.S.
degree from California State
Polytechnic University, Pomona,
and his M.A., MSW, and Ph.D.
Degrees from the University of
Michigan in Ann Arbor,
Michigan. He is currently
completing the final stages of
his dissertation for a second
Ph.D. in Psychology at the
University of Santa Barbara.
Dr. McClain works and consults
extensively with the Department
of Children & Family Services,
foster children, children who are
developmentally delayed and
disabled, and youth-at-risk
throughout the County of Los
Angeles.
Faculty of the Year
Jesus (Jess) Guerra
Jess Guerra is an Associate
Professor in the Diesel,
Alternative Fuel & Hybrid
Vehicle Technology Program at
Los Angeles Trade-Technical
College where he is also an
alumnus.
Jess spent his first six years in
the transportation industry
working with large truck fleets
where he honed his technical
training and experience in
running a maintenance shop.
He also gained another six years
of experience working for the
Los Angeles County
Metropolitan Transportation
Authority where he expanded
his expertise in alternative fuels
and transit bus shop
supervision. In 2005, he went to
work for LATTC as a full-time
faculty member.
Jess combines this experience
with an intense motivation to
assist individuals in building a
successful career path in the
field of Diesel, Alternative Fuel
& Hybrid Vehicle Technology.
At the present time, Jess serves
as Chairman of the Board of
Directors of the Southern
California Regional Transit
Training Consortium-a
consortium comprised of
multiple transit bus companies
and community colleges that
focuses on the technical training
of bus maintenance technicians
and other personnel. He is also
the Vice Chairman for California
Council of Diesel Education and
Technology. This Council was
formed by the California Air
Recourses Board and provides
training on emission regulations
enforcement for Diesel vehicles.

Miguel Santiago
As a community organizer,
educator and government
representative, Miguel
Santiago prides himself on
working hard to empower Los
Angeles working families. Born
to immigrant parents, Miguel
attended local public schools,
community college and then
graduated Magna Cum Laude
from the University of California,
Los Angeles (UCLA) majoring in
History.
A lifelong resident of the San
Fernando Valley, Miguel has been
an active, steady and consistent
member of his community. He's
a founding member and twoterm
past President of the
Canoga Park Neighborhood
Council. With his assistance,
Canoga Park became a nationally
recognized "All-American City".
As an educator, Miguel taught
middle school at Guardian Angel
Catholic School in Pacoima.
Miguel also served in several
capacities at Our Lady of the
Valley Catholic Church. As
Parish Director, his major
accomplishments were
establishing educational
outreach programs for low
income and immigrant
communities, developing
projects that increased political
awareness and involvement and
coordinating youth projects and
charity programs. He also helped
develop the church's English as
a second Language
Programming, Citizenship drives
and voter education programs.
Miguel Santiago was appointed
to the Board of Trustees of the
Los Angeles Community College
District on March 26, 2008 and
was sworn in on April 9, 2008.
He was elected to the Board the
following year during the 2009
primary election.
Perrin Reid, Esq.
Ms. Perrin Reid is
currently serving as the
Executive Assistant to
the Chancellor of the Los
Angeles Community College
District. Before her arrival at
LACCD, Ms. Reid served as the
Director of the Office of Equity
and Diversity, Office of the
President, and Legislative
Liaison, Office of Government,
Legislative and Community
Relations at California State
University, Long Beach (CSULB).
As a member of President King
Alexander’s Cabinet, Ms. Reid
ensured EEO/ADA compliance
with CSULB policies and nondiscrimination
laws; additionally,
she administered the university’s
federal earmark process related
to faculty proposals, monitored
state and federal legislation
related to public higher
education and, with the
president, met with legislators
and aides in Sacramento and
Washington, D.C. to further the
CSULB legislative agenda.
Ms. Reid’s previous professional
experience includes service as an
English instructor at Glendale
Community College (CA), UCLA
Writing Programs, and Mount
Holyoke College (M.A.) and
lobbying experience with
TransAfrica, Inc., a non-profit
organization which advances
U.S. foreign policies toward the
nations of Africa, the Caribbean
and Latin America. Ms. Reid
holds a B.A. in English degree
from Tufts University (MA), a
Master of Arts in English degree
from the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst, and a
Juris Doctor degree from Loyola
Law School (CA). She also was a
member of Harvard University’s
Institute for Educational
Management Class of 2008.

Graduation Requirements
The Board of Governors of
the California Community
Colleges has authorized
the Los Angeles Community
College District and/or Board of
Trustees to confer the degree of
Associate in Arts and Associate
in Science.
The following requirements
apply to students entering for
the first time effective July
1983.
I. Unit Requirements: 60-64
units of course credit in the
selected curriculum.
II. Scholarship Requirements:
“C” (2.0) grade average or
better in all work attempted.
III.Competency Requirements:
Students must demonstrate
competence in reading,
written expression, and
mathematics.
IV. Residence Requirements:
Completion of at least 12
units of work in residence
and attendance at the college
during the semester in which
the graduation requirements
are completed.
V. Course Requirements:
Students must complete all
classes required in their
major, combined with
general education courses
described under plan A or B

Los Angeles Trade-Technical
College to any student who
successfully completes a
sequence of courses established
by the department and
approved by the college. This
sequence of courses shall
include but is not limited to the
essential occupational courses
required in the major. The
student must maintain a grade
point average of 2.0 or better in
the courses required for the
certificate.

Distinguished Graduate Award
Some students in today’s
ceremony are wearing
special Gold Honor Cords
that identify them as honors
graduates. They have earned
this distinction by maintaining a
high grade point average and by
completing the requirements for
the Distinguished Graduate
Award.
Dean’s List honors are awarded
each semester to full and parttime
students who earn a 3.5 or
higher grade point average.
President’s List honors are
awarded to full and part-time
students who are placed on the
Dean’s Honor List for three
consecutive semesters.
The Distinguished Graduate
Award is one of the most
significant and prestigious
honors available to the students
at Los Angeles Trade-Technical
College. This honor is
bestowed on graduates during
the College Commencement. In
order to be considered for the
award, a candidate must:

LATTC at the time of
petition, and is in good

Jeanette Shammas
Honorary Degree
Jeanette Shammas is the
owner of the Downtown LA
Auto Group, seven
automobile dealerships located
in the Figueroa Corridor.
She was born in Chicago to a
building contractor from
Sweden and his American wife,
but she moved with her family
to Los Angeles at the age of four
and grew up in Hollywood
where she attended Fairfax High
School. Jeanette enrolled at
USC in the midst of the
depression, but because of
financial constraints left and
found employment first at See’s
Candy and then very soon at
the Bank of America. She
married Nick Shammas, a used
car retailer who during World
War II opened a factory
supplying materials for the
military effort. After the war,
she raised two daughters and
helped her husband establish a
car business in Studio City.
In 1955 the Shammas family
purchased Felix Chevrolet and
moved the dealership to its
current location across from
USC. Over the next two
decades the Shammas family
opened more auto dealerships
on Figueroa including
Downtown LA Motors
Mercedes-Benz and Nissan,
Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi
of Downtown LA. Nick
Shammas passed away in 2003
and Jeanette assumed his role
as owner of all the stores in the
Downtown LA Auto Group. In
2009 Jeanette purchased Carson
Nissan.
Jeanette Shammas has
supported and contributed to
many community organizations
over the years including the
Center Theater Group,
California Hospital and,
especially, Los Angeles Trade-
Technical College.
