KANSAS COACHES ASSOCIATION<br />
- General Information -<br />
- Although the objectives of the <strong>Kansas</strong> <strong>Coaches</strong> <strong>Association</strong> are multi fold, the three primary goals are:<br />
A) To promote harmonious relationships between the administrators and coaches in their respective<br />
schools and to work in a close cooperative way with the KSHSAA.<br />
B) To assist in promoting pure and wholesome amateur interscholastic athletics and the coaching<br />
profession and to work together for the improvement of conditions in <strong>Kansas</strong> school activities.<br />
C) To have a representation to whom may be referred athletic challenges of general interest in the hope<br />
of creating better relationships between schools and a sympathetic understanding among coaches.<br />
- The <strong>Kansas</strong> <strong>Coaches</strong> <strong>Association</strong> is a voluntary organization not organized for profit.<br />
- The members of the KCA Executive Board and the <strong>Sport</strong>s <strong>Chairperson</strong>s serve on a voluntary basis.<br />
- The <strong>Kansas</strong> <strong>Coaches</strong> <strong>Association</strong> is the only coaches' advisory organization to the <strong>Kansas</strong> State High School<br />
Activities <strong>Association</strong>. The hierarchy for recommendations to the KSHSAA from the KCA follow the steps<br />
listed below:<br />
1. Recommendations from the <strong>Sport</strong>s <strong>Chairperson</strong>s of the KCA - documented by surveys from the<br />
coaches.<br />
2. Reception by and approval of the KCA Executive Board, who in turn is the liaison to the KSHSAA.<br />
3. Reception by the KSHSAA Executive Board as presented by the KCA Executive Board during the<br />
KSHSAA April Executive Board meeting.<br />
4. Reception by the KSHSAA Board of Directors.<br />
- The 2012-13 <strong>Kansas</strong> <strong>Coaches</strong> <strong>Association</strong> dues are $30.00:<br />
The KCA membership fee automatically provides the member status in one state organization (KCA) and two<br />
national organizations (National Federation State High School <strong>Association</strong>s and National High School Athletic<br />
<strong>Coaches</strong> <strong>Association</strong>).<br />
Membership in the KCA provides- 1) "COACH-OF-THE-YEAR" awards program with plaques portfolios 2)<br />
<strong>Kansas</strong> coaching service certificates (20,25,30+ years) 3) KCA emails and articles on the web:<br />

Membership in the NFHS provides benefits listed on the next page.<br />

Guidelines for <strong>Sport</strong>s Chairs<br />
There is a <strong>Sport</strong> Chair that will report to the Executive Board of the KCA in each sport. All <strong>Sport</strong><br />
Chairs will be members of the <strong>Kansas</strong> <strong>Coaches</strong> <strong>Association</strong> and serve at least a two-year term.<br />
In order to help build a close working relationship between the KCA executive board and the KCA sports chairs<br />
persons, each sport has been assigned an executive board member to contact. Listed below are the board<br />
members and the sports they are assigned:<br />

The 1 st Vice President (Brad Smith) is in charge collecting the Coach of the Year award information and may<br />
be contacting you also.<br />
There are three parts to the <strong>Sport</strong> Chair job as listed below.<br />
1. Each <strong>Sport</strong> Chair is responsible for surveying all of the coaches in their sport across the state of <strong>Kansas</strong> for<br />
recommendations of rule changes or procedures specific to their sport. The official KCA survey form (found<br />
on the next page) must be used to report all recommendations to the KCA.<br />
A. The KCA survey form, which includes all survey results and recommendations, should be copied,<br />
completed, and forwarded to the KCA president no later than March 1.<br />
B. Each <strong>Sport</strong> Chair may call and discuss recommendations and ask questions of the KSHSAA staff<br />
assigned to their sport. All recommendations must be turned into the KCA for presentation - not to<br />
the KSHSAA staff.<br />
C. Each <strong>Sport</strong> Chair will have at his/her disposal a budget of $250.00 for expenses occurred such as<br />
postage or telephone calls. Receipts for the bills up to $250.00 should be forwarded to the KCA<br />
Executive Director/Treasurer for reimbursement. The KCA will also provide the <strong>Sport</strong>s Chairs with<br />
letterhead and envelopes (contact the secretary).<br />
2. Each <strong>Sport</strong> Chair is responsible for surveying coaches in their sport to determine a Coach of the Year<br />
recipient. Coach of the Year recipients must be members of the KCA. Please review the Coach of the<br />
Year Guidelines included in this packet.<br />
3. Other responsibilities……<br />
A. Each <strong>Sport</strong> Chair is requested to supply a list of preferred clinic speakers for the August Coaching<br />
School to the KCA president and to David Cherry, KSHSAA, in early December.<br />
B. <strong>Sport</strong> Chairs are encouraged to write short articles for publication on the KCA website. Each sport<br />
has a subsection for its use and any information will be posted including notice of vacancies,<br />
surveys, or articles.<br />
C. Encourage all coaches to join the KCA.<br />
D. Attend the KCA business meeting during the KSHSAA Coaching School in August in Topeka.<br />

Coach of the Year Awards<br />
Each <strong>Sport</strong> Chair is responsible for selecting a "Coach of the Year" for their sport. This award<br />
is presented at the KSHSAA Coaching School in August. The <strong>Sport</strong> Chair is responsible for copying<br />
the "Coach of the Year Recipient" form (found on the next page), completing it, and forwarding it to<br />
the KCA 1st Vice President. These forms are due to the 1st Vice President on the following dates:<br />
Fall <strong>Sport</strong>s (Cross Country, Football, Girls Golf, Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis, and Volleyball) are due<br />
by December 1.<br />
Winter <strong>Sport</strong>s (Basketball, Bowling, Gymnastics (Even Years), Wrestling) are due by March 31.<br />
Spring <strong>Sport</strong>s (Baseball, Boys Golf, Middle School, Girls Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Boys Tennis,<br />
Track) are due by June 1.<br />
Guidelines to consider for Coach of the Year nominees:<br />
1. Any head coach of a Junior High, Middle School, or Senior high is eligible for recognition.<br />
2. Classification of schools (6A, 5A, 4A, etc.) is not an important factor. The KCA award is for the<br />
coach in each sport who is deemed worthy of recognition by his/her peers.<br />
3. Win/loss record.<br />
4. Post season competition.<br />
5. The recipient of the KCA Coach of the Year Award must be a member of the KCA.<br />
6. A past recipient of the Coach of the Year Award is ineligible to receive that award for the next<br />
