Your local health services
Longer
GP opening
hours

NHS Leeds West Clinical Commissioning Group
has produced this guide to help you find out
more about your local health services.
The CCG represents our 37
member GP practices and is
responsible for planning and
funding your local health
services.
We are one of three CCGs in Leeds
and we look after a population of
around 367,000 people.
Longer GP opening hours
Some GP practices in our area are
already trialling a scheme to offer
longer opening hours. For the majority
of practices this should ensure that
patients can access services 12 hours a
day over five or seven days a week.
Over 30 practices are now open
longer hours, including early mornings
and late evenings. Some of these
practices work together to offer
weekend and bank holiday opening
from 8.00am to 4.00pm. This means
that patients can have a doctor’s
appointment for routine care in
evenings or weekends, but it might be
at another local practice.
You can book an appointment by
ringing your GP practice in the same
way that you do now.
Your practice will be able to tell
you about their additional opening
hours, and where you would be able
to see a doctor at a weekend.
You can book routine and urgent
appointments in advance or on
the day, by ringing your GP as
normal. You can also book or cancel
appointments online.
Please check your GP practice’s
website and keep an eye on their
reception notice boards to see their
opening times.
You can find a full list of our
local GP practices in this booklet,
together with their contact details.
You can also find more information
on the CCG website at
www.leedswestccg.nhs.uk/
Seeing your GP
Your GP appointment -
keep it or cancel it
We want to improve access to GP
appointments for our patients. You
can help with this by making sure
you attend your appointment or
cancelling it if you no longer need it.
More than 12 million GP
appointments are missed each year
in the UK, costing over £162 million.
Missed appointments can cause
serious delays in treatment for other
patients.
Most people have genuine reasons
for not being able to attend their
appointment. If you no longer need
your GP appointment please let your
GP practice know so that they can
offer it to another patient.
Make sure your contact
details are up to date
Please help your GP practice keep
your details up to date. If you’ve
changed your address, telephone
number or mobile number, then
please let them know.
Many practices now send text
messages as appointment reminders,
to share important information, or as
a way of getting in touch with you
urgently. If you would like to receive
messages through your mobile phone
then just let the practice have your
mobile phone number.
If you register with your GP practice
online you can update your details
directly, or simply speak to staff at
your practice.
Make the most of
your appointment
Before your doctor’s appointment
• write down your two or three
most important questions
• list the medicines you’re
taking, including any vitamins
and supplements
• write down details of your
symptoms, including when
they started and what makes
them better or worse
• tell your surgery or hospital
in advance if you need an
interpreter or any other help
with communicating
• you could also take a relative
or friend with you to help
During your
appointment
Always ask questions if you’re
unsure of what’s being said. If
there are any words you don’t
understand, ask for them to be
written down and explained.
During your appointment, you
may want to write notes about
what’s being explained to you.
This may be useful if you need to
look back on what was said.
3

Before you leave
your appointment
Before you leave, check that you’ve
covered everything. For example:
• Have you asked all the questions
on your list?
• Have you understood everything?
If not, ask for it to be explained
again
• Ask what happens next and
when. Will you need another
appointment?
• Make sure you know who to
contact if you have any problems
After your appointment
Once you leave your appointment,
remember to keep your notes safe
so you can refer back to them if you
need to.
Book any tests that you need and put
the dates in your diary or planner.
You should also know who to contact
if you have any questions about your
appointments.
If you’re expecting some test results,
make sure you fully understand what
they mean.
If you don’t
need your
appointment please
let your practice
know so they can
give it to another
patient
Accessing GP services
online
You can now book or cancel an
appointment, or order repeat
prescriptions by visiting your GP
practice’s website.
To register for online services, you’ll
need to contact your local GP practice
to get a username and a password.
Once you have these, you can take
advantage of online services from the
comfort of your home, on the bus or
wherever else you may be!
GP practices have secure connections
so the only people who can see
your details are those working in the
practice.
GP online services are expanding so
you’ll soon be able to view your own
medical records online, for free.
If you think you don’t have the
confidence or skills to use online
services, speak to your GP practice
who will be able to help you.
If you know someone who can help
you access the internet then you
might find this website useful:
www.learnmyway.com/
what-next/health.
It has an online guide that shows how
to use online GP services.
The next time you need a GP
appointment remember that you
can do it online. You can still ring,
or visit your practice to make an
appointment if you prefer.
4

Are you an informal carer?
Informal carers help the person they
care for to deal with illness, disability
or mental distress.
If you care for someone, there are
a number of things you can do to
help them. This means they may not
have to see their GP so often, or
have to go to a hospital emergency
department.
Make sure the person you care for:
• keeps taking their prescribed
medicines
• has a well-stocked medicine
cabinet to help them manage
common minor ailments
• doesn’t have to go out when the
weather is bad
• finishes a course of prescribed
antibiotics
• seeks help and advice from their
pharmacy straight away if they
start to fall ill
Also, make sure they have enough
supplies of their prescription
medicines in case surgeries and
pharmacies are closed.
Unless it’s an emergency don’t take
the person you care for to A&E or
call 999. If you are in any doubt, call
NHS 111 to get the right treatment.
Self-care advice and information on
the right NHS services can be found
at www.nhs.uk.
Don’t put off
getting your flu jab!
If your GP practice has invited you, or
a member of your family, to have a
free flu jab it means you really should
have it because you need it.
The flu jab is available for free for
anyone who is in one of the ‘at risk’
groups. This means those who are
aged over 65 or those under 65 who
have an existing health condition that
makes them at greater risk of falling
seriously ill, or even dying, as a result
of getting the flu. It is also offered
free to all pregnant women as well
as carers of people who are in the ‘at
risk’ groups.
This year the national programme
is also extending the age range for
children to include school children
in years one and two. Children are
offered protection against the flu
through a nasal spray.
For advice and information about
the flu vaccination, speak to your
GP or practice nurse.
6

Children under five
Almost all babies, toddlers and
children will get common childhood
illnesses like coughs and colds, fever,
diarrhoea and vomiting.
Most of the time you can treat your
child at home with advice from your
pharmacist, GP or health visitor.
It’s a good idea to keep a small
supply of useful medicines in a
locked cabinet or somewhere where
a child cannot reach them. Make
sure you’ve got the right strength of
medicine for the age of your child,
always follow instructions carefully
and check use by dates. Read the
label carefully and use sugar-free
options where you can.
In your medicine cabinet
you could keep:
• a thermometer
• plasters
• liquid painkillers such as baby
paracetamol or ibuprofen
• barrier creams
If your child has been prescribed
medicines by a doctor, make sure
they are taken as directed.
Antibiotics are not always the
answer, but if they’ve been
prescribed, make sure your
child finishes the course.
Patient Advice and
Liaison Service (PALS)
The Patient Advice and Liaison
Service (PALS) can provide
confidential help, advice,
information and guidance on
all aspects of healthcare.
The PALS team is available:
Monday to Friday: 8.30 - 4.30
Registering
with a doctor
If you have not registered with
a GP practice, simply contact
the GP surgery and ask to
register with them. Find your
nearest GP practice by visiting:
www.nhs.uk
Registering
with a dentist
There is no need to register with
a dentist. Simply find a practice
that’s convenient for you,
whether it’s near your home or
work, and phone them to see if
any appointments are available.
If the dental practice you first
contact is full or doesn’t provide
NHS care, this doesn’t mean
that there is no NHS dental
care available locally. Find
your nearest dentist by visiting
Get involved
with the CCG!
Join the CCGs’
community network
Network members receive a copy
of our quarterly magazine which
informs them of local and citywide
opportunities to have their say on
services as well as the latest local
health news.
We also invite network members to
take part in projects that may be of
particular personal interest to them.
We do this because we want to
ensure that our local communities
get involved with the work we do
and help us make decisions that
mean we can improve the health
and wellbeing of all the people we
serve.
We need you…
We want to continue to expand our
network of patients, carers and the
wider public so that we can listen
to the views of people from all the
different communities we cover.
There are lots of ways you can get
involved. You need to live in the
area of Leeds covered by our CCG,
or be registered with one of our GP
practices to get involved and help
to shape local health services. You
will receive regular updates and
information, and be asked for your
views and opinions on local health
services. Find out more at
www.leedswestccg.nhs.uk/
get-involved.
Join your patient
reference group
If you’re interested in having a say in
the way your local health services are
delivered, you could get involved with
your GP practice’s patient reference
group.
Groups meet on a regular basis to
discuss the services on offer, and how
improvements can be made for the
benefit of patients and the practice.
Some practices also have ‘virtual groups’
who regularly communicate by email.
To find out more, get in touch with
the practice manager at your GP
surgery.
