MESSAGE FROM
GARY BARTA
University of Iowa Director of Athletics
Teams from coast to coast envy the competitive edge Iowa
Hawkeye fans provide the hundreds of UI student-athletes on
24 teams who proudly wear the black and gold.
That tradition of Hawkeye loyalty includes visionary financial
support. Thousands of fans provide financial assistance through
a variety of ways to support Our Hawkeyes.
Scholarship costs continue to rise each year, accounting for a
greater percentage of the Athletics Department’s annual budget.
More than ever before, your support enables Iowa to recruit top
student-athletes. Your gifts also defray costs associated with team
travel, facilities, equipment, and medical support.
UI athletics supporters are crucial members of the Hawkeye team,
and we count on the loyalty and generosity of Iowa fans to help
keep Our Hawkeyes successful and respected around the nation.
Thank you … and Go Hawks!

THANK YOU
Supporting the Student-Athlete
Each year Athletics Development strives to not only
help offset growing scholarship costs, but also fund the
complete student-athlete experience. As tuition costs
continue to rise, along with the additional costs in the
many other areas associated with supporting nearly 700
Hawkeye student-athletes across 24 sports, financial
contributions are more important than ever.
Your support of Our Hawkeyes is essential to ensuring that
all student-athletes are provided the necessary resources
to stay competitive on the field and in the classroom.
Thank you for your support of Our Hawkeyes.
THE PRIORITY POINTS SYSTEM
In keeping with the spirit of Hawkeye loyalty, and in recognition
of the generosity of those who support Our Hawkeyes each year,
the UI Department of Intercollegiate Athletics developed a priority
points system that is fair, orderly, and includes Hawkeye fans in the
process of selecting their football, men’s and women’s basketball,
and wrestling season ticket locations.
The Priority Points System quantifies each contributor’s and
season ticket holder’s relationship with UI Athletics by considering
a number of different criteria, including giving to athletics, years
of season ticket purchase, and alumni/letterwinner status.
Priority points help the Athletics Ticket Office determine seating
upgrades for season tickets, away-game ticket allocations, postseason
ticket allocations, bowl-game ticket allocations, and other
athletics considerations.
POINTS DESCRIPTION
3 for each year of purchase of
season tickets for sport involved
(football, men’s basketball,
women’s basketball, or wrestling),
beginning with the 1972 season
for football and 1982 for men’s
and women’s basketball, and
wrestling*
1 for every $100 of cumulative
dollar amount carries over from year to year.
*Years of season ticket purchase are based on each individual sport, as acknowledged by the UI Athletics
Ticket Office. Student tickets do not count in years of purchase for the general public and only count for
faculty/staff that start their employment with the university immediately after graduation.
HOW TO SUPPORT
OUR HAWKEYES
Hawkeye Visions
Endowed Scholarship Support for Our Hawkeyes
■■
UI Athletics covers the full cost of each scholarship the Hawkeyes offer across 24
sports, a total that exceeds $10 million annually; those expenses rise each year
both in terms of dollars spent and as a percentage of overall athletics expenses.
■■
■■
Endowed scholarships are a crucial source of funding for Our Hawkeyes
UI Athletics is self-supporting and receives no state funding
How Endowments work
Endowments are funds with a minimum balance requirement in which the principal
is invested in perpetuity and a portion of the fund’s value (payout) is allocated for the
donor designated purpose. Under the Foundation’s spending policy, annual payout
will be increased by Consumer Price Index (inflation rate) for the prior calendar year.
Historical annual payout over time has averaged 4.5% of endowment value. The
investment objective for the University of Iowa Foundation endowment is to seek
maximum total return consistent with the preservation of principal, diversification, and
avoidance of excessive risk. These objectives are designed to provide a steady flow of
income for donor designated purpose.
When scholarships are endowed by generous and loyal supporters, those
reimbursements to the UI are covered, allowing the athletics department to direct
annual gifts and other revenues toward other essential needs. Endowed scholarship gifts
through the Hawkeye Visions Endowment Program have enabled Iowa’s intercollegiate
athletics programs to move forward even in the face of rapidly increasing expenses.
The UI is grateful for the visionary support of alumni and friends who have
demonstrated their pride in the athletic and academic success of all Our Hawkeyes by
establishing named, endowed scholarships, while also perpetually linking their name
with the proud Iowa Hawkeye tradition.
16 Athletics Development • jointheiclub.com
The Power of an Endowment
Endowed funds provide stable, long-term financial support. Unlike athletics operations revenue (such as
ticket or concession sales) or annual I-Club contributions, gifts to endowed funds are invested to protect
the “purchasing power,” so that over the long term, the funds will fulfill the donors’ specified purposes.
The amount made available to UI Athletics continues to accrue, providing crucial scholarship support for
generations of Our Hawkeyes.
The goal of the Hawkeye Visions Endowment Program is to work with Iowa Hawkeye supporters to
secure sufficient resources to endow each student-athlete scholarship in every sport.
How You Can Help
Your investment in the future of Hawkeye athletics can permanently endow a variety of student-athlete
scholarships. Following are some examples of support levels within the Hawkeye Visions Endowment
Program:
HOW TO SUPPORT OUR HAWKEYES
Carver-Hawkeye Arena Enhancement/Dale and
Marilyn Howard Family Pavilion,September 2011
In addition to the annual fund (I-Club) and
Hawkeye Visions Endowment program, there are
other ways to support Our Hawkeyes:
Capital Projects
Capital campaigns are designed to provide Our
Hawkeyes with the best facilities and equipment
needed to train and compete with the best in the
Big Ten Conference and the nation. These projects
showcase the commitment to our current and
future Hawkeyes.
The UI Athletics Department is 100 percent selfsupporting
and, as such, receives no state tax
dollars. Therefore, the cost of any capital project
will be funded with private philanthropic support
from fans of the Hawkeyes, friends of the UI, and
departmental revenues.
Other ways to give include estate planning, planned giving, bequests, charitable
gift annuity, charitable remainder trusts, memorials and endowments, retained
life estate, charitable lead trust, cash, appreciated securities, closely held stock,
retirement plan assets, real estate, and life insurance.
Donor Advised Funds
While it is generally permissible for donors to direct gifts to the University of Iowa
Foundation through donor-advised funds (DAFs), there are restrictions imposed by
the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that impact certain types of DAF contributions,
including those to support the University of Iowa Athletics Department.
A contribution to qualifying DAFs (often held at community foundations) is treated
by the IRS as charitable contribution at the time of the contribution to the DAF.
The donor may then advise to which charitable organization(s) distributions are
made, such as to the UI Foundation. Certain laws and IRS regulations prohibit a
donor, donor advisor, or their family member from receiving more than incidental
benefits as a result of the DAF distribution. The potential consequences of
receiving impermissible benefits include jeopardizing the tax-exempt status of
the entity maintaining the DAF and imposing significant excise taxes on the donor
and/or their family member.
One of the impermissible benefits for a donor or family member to receive as
a result of a gift made through a DAF is the right to purchase athletics tickets.
I-Club gifts at all membership levels provide member benefits including the
opportunity to purchase UI Athletics tickets. Therefore, neither the UI Foundation
nor UI Department of Athletics may accept a gift made through a DAF for I-Club
membership, even if the donor ultimately chooses not to purchase the tickets.
Importantly, a donor may still support the UI Department of Athletics through a
DAF gift if the donor declines all benefits that would otherwise be provided as a
result of the gift. These gifts are directed into a UI Foundation fund that does not
afford any donor benefits and provides unrestricted support to the UI Department
of Athletics. To learn more about supporting the UI Department of Athletics with
a DAF gift, please contact the I-Club at (319) 467-3410 or iclub@uiowa.edu. For
specific information regarding your legal or tax situation, please consult your own
professional advisor.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When should I make or renew my annual contribution?
Financial contributions are accepted any time during the athletics
giving year, which runs from July 1 through June 30. Contributions
should be received by the UI Foundation before June 30 for upcoming
athletics year for football season ticket and parking consideration for
the following year. Please note: football and men’s basketball per-seat
contributions count toward annual I-Club recognition levels.
How do I secure reserved parking for football gamedays?
Season ticket holders at the Silver Hawks level and above ($1,200+
annually) have the opportunity to purchase a football parking pass for
parking near Kinnick Stadium. (Please see page 11.)
How do I make a gift to the Iowa Hawkeyes?
Gifts can be made online through our Give Now button at
jointheiclub.com, by calling the Iowa Hawkeyes Athletics
Development Office at (800) 648-6973 or (319) 467-3410, or by
mailing your gift to the UI Foundation (UI Foundation, Athletics,
P.O. Box 4550, One West Park Road, Iowa City, IA 52244)
How does the Priority Points System work?
The Priority Points System quantifies every I-Club member’s and
season ticket holder’s relationship with UI Athletics by considering
a number of different criteria, including giving to athletics, years of
season ticket purchase, and alumni/letterwinner status.
Is my I-Club gift tax deductible?
80 percent of your I-Club gift is tax deductible because you are
receiving a benefit (valued at 20 percent) from this gift. For more
information, seek the advice of your accountant or tax advisor, or
view IRS section 170(1).
Can I use a company match for my athletics gift?
Often times, yes. Please check with your company’s human resources
department for more information and to review any specific
restrictions within your company’s matching gift program. Matching
gift forms are available through the company providing the matching
gift. Please contact the Hawkeyes Athletics Development Office with
additional questions regarding matching gifts.
What are Priority Points and how are they used?
Our priority points system is a fair and consistent method of
assigning seat locations for football and men’s basketball season
tickets, allowing for football away-game ticket purchase, bowl-ticket
purchase, and other related opportunities.
Can I receive I-Club “credit” for a gift I made to other areas
of the university?
No, only gifts made to the I-Club (or sport-specific development funds)
are eligible for I-Club giving credit. However, gifts made to athletics
campaigns count toward priority.
If I already make a per-seat donation for season football tickets, do I
need to make an additional gift for men’s basketball season tickets?
Individuals who have season tickets in Kinnick Stadium and Carver-
Hawkeye Arena seating zones that require per-seat contributions will
be required to pay whichever is greater of the two.
Example A: If you have 4 seats in Zone I ($600/seat required)
for football and 2 seats in Zone I ($600/seat required) for men’s
basketball, a total minimum annual gift of $2,400 is required. (The
$1,200 owed for the men’s basketball season tickets has been satisfied
with the gift made in association with the football season tickets.)
Example B: If you have 4 seats in Zone III ($200/seat required)
for football and 2 seats in Zone I ($600/seat required) for men’s
basketball, a total minimum annual gift of $1,200 is required. ($1,200
total, not $800 for football PLUS $1,200 for men’s basketball.)
Example C: If you have two outdoor club football season tickets ($2,200/
seat required) and six seats in Zone I for men’s basketball ($600/seat
required), a total minimum annual gift of $4,400 is required. (The $3,600
owed for the men’s basketball season tickets has been satisfied with the
gift made in association with the football season tickets.)
Who do I contact regarding tickets to athletics events and/or parking?
The UI Athletics Ticket Office handles all requests for tickets to
Iowa athletics events. Individuals may contact the Athletics Ticket
Office by phone at (800) IA HAWKS (800-424-2957) or order online
at hawkeyesports.com. Football season ticket renewal forms are
mailed in January each year. Individuals who did not order season
tickets for this season but are interested in purchasing season tickets
for next season should contact the Iowa Athletics Ticket Office.
Priority parking at athletics events is a benefit for I-Club members at
certain giving levels; passes are purchased from and mailed through
the Athletics Ticket Office.
hosted from mid-April to mid-June. Visit jointheiclub.com for a
complete list of locations and dates.
