HOW TO SUPPORT <strong>OUR</strong> <strong>HAWKEYES</strong> Carver-Hawkeye Arena Enhancement/Dale and Marilyn Howard Family Pavilion,September 2011 In addition to the annual fund (I-Club) and Hawkeye Visions Endowment program, there are other ways to support Our Hawkeyes: Capital Projects Capital campaigns are designed to provide Our Hawkeyes with the best facilities and equipment needed to train and compete with the best in the Big Ten Conference and the nation. These projects showcase the commitment to our current and future Hawkeyes. The UI Athletics Department is 100 percent selfsupporting and, as such, receives no state tax dollars. Therefore, the cost of any capital project will be funded with private philanthropic support from fans of the Hawkeyes, friends of the UI, and departmental revenues. James M. Creating Your Hawkeye Legacy Other ways to give include estate planning, planned giving, bequests, charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trusts, memorials and endowments, retained life estate, charitable lead trust, cash, appreciated securities, closely held stock, retirement plan assets, real estate, and life insurance. Donor Advised Funds While it is generally permissible for donors to direct gifts to the University of Iowa Foundation through donor-advised funds (DAFs), there are restrictions imposed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that impact certain types of DAF contributions, including those to support the University of Iowa Athletics Department. A contribution to qualifying DAFs (often held at community foundations) is treated by the IRS as charitable contribution at the time of the contribution to the DAF. The donor may then advise to which charitable organization(s) distributions are made, such as to the UI Foundation. Certain laws and IRS regulations prohibit a donor, donor advisor, or their family member from receiving more than incidental benefits as a result of the DAF distribution. The potential consequences of receiving impermissible benefits include jeopardizing the tax-exempt status of the entity maintaining the DAF and imposing significant excise taxes on the donor and/or their family member. One of the impermissible benefits for a donor or family member to receive as a result of a gift made through a DAF is the right to purchase athletics tickets. I-Club gifts at all membership levels provide member benefits including the opportunity to purchase UI Athletics tickets. Therefore, neither the UI Foundation nor UI Department of Athletics may accept a gift made through a DAF for I-Club membership, even if the donor ultimately chooses not to purchase the tickets. Importantly, a donor may still support the UI Department of Athletics through a DAF gift if the donor declines all benefits that would otherwise be provided as a result of the gift. These gifts are directed into a UI Foundation fund that does not afford any donor benefits and provides unrestricted support to the UI Department of Athletics. Methods of Giving Online: jointheiclub.com Check/Money Orders/Credit Cards: Checks and money orders should be made payable to the UI Foundation. The UI Foundation accepts all major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Add Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT): Approved authorization for the UIF to deduct directly from your bank account on a schedule selected by you. Securities: Donors have the ability to support Our Hawkeyes through an electronic transfer of stock or via the actual stock certificate. Bequests: Gifts through wills and bequests can provide donors the opportunity to sustain their family name in conjunction with UI Athletics. Payroll Deduction: UI faculty and staff members are able to enroll in a payroll deduction plan to support Our Hawkeyes. Monthly Giving: This program allows you to split your annual donation into smaller payments, while still achieving the level of support you desire. Matching Gifts: Ask about your employer’s matching gift policy to see if you can increase your support of Our Hawkeyes.
