Sister Nivedita Educational Complex
Rajkot, Gujarat, India
Sister Nivedita Educational Complex is a coalition of institutions and activities that promote education as
a 'means to an end' and not the end alone. It aims to redefine education beyond classrooms and books. It
focuses on overall development, practical knowledge, fun learning and life-long education for the
students to reach the pinnacle of success.
"National education is, first and foremost, an education in national idealism. We must remember,
however, that the aim of education is emancipation of sympathy and intellect. Knowledge is the goal and
trained faculty is the aim."- Sister Nivedita

About Us
Sister Nivedita Educational Complex was founded in 1968 by Shri Gulabbhai Jani and Smt. Ushaben Jani.
Ushaben and Gulabbhai Jani were Professors of Economics in a college affiliated to Saurashtra University
in 1967. As part of the celebrations of the birth centenary of Sister Nivedita, they arranged few lectures
and programs in the college. Swami Atmasthanandji, the then President of Ramkrishna Ashram, Rajkot
was quite impressed by their work. Swami Atmasthanandji asked them to carry out the same activities
at the school level as well. Inspired by him, Shri Gulabbhai and Smt. Ushaben opened a small K.G. school
in the name of Sister Nivedita in 1968 and thus Sister Nivedita Educational Complex (SNEC) came into
existence.
The aim of SNEC is to provide quality education to all. We aim to challenge the conventional "teacherto-student"
or one-way method of teaching, giving way to active involvement of the students in the
learning process through group workshops, activities and interactive sessions. Our effort is directed to
encourage self-learning, while developing the mind, body and spirit.
After one year of activities of Sister Nivedita Educational Complex, parents and guardians of the
students approached and persuaded us to start primary school and a year later to start High School and
Higher Secondary School. Brick by brick, SNEC was built and today it indeed stands as a huge educational
complex with a number of sister institutes and activities as a part of it.
Vision
Our vision is for an inclusive, empowered, happy, stress free and enlightened world, in which we all live
in harmony with values, integrity and civic sense believing in freedom of expression and respect for all.
Mission
In partnership with our community, we will ensure that each student acquires the knowledge, skills and
strategies, necessary to reach his or her full potential, and become a good, productive and responsible
citizen.
FOUNDERS’ NOTE
The aim of education is to produce a good human being, a good citizen, a good art appreciator and an
original thinker.
We believe that all children are potentially divine and can and will learn in a positive and nurturing
environment. We understand that teaching and learning require a state of readiness and a sense of
timing. Students need to be exposed to a range of teaching and learning styles so that they come to
recognize and seek their own best learning situation. Our greatest challenge is to help our students learn
how to achieve their highest academic potential, to be confident in their own abilities and to use those
abilities responsibly.

We have developed a warm and safe environment conducive to learning. We want to make a difference
in our students’ lives by teaching them value education, vital academic information, skills, strategies and
by enhancing positive social growth and physical development. As a result, our children will be life-long
learners who are sensitive to the needs of a changing world.
We have a dream that we want to create a world, where there will not be any discrimination of caste,
creed, religion and gender. People will live with harmony and peace.
“Vasudhev Kutumbakam” is our ancient motto. We want to endeavor to realize it in this present world.
School on Wheels
In 1994, the ‘School On Wheels’ project started with the vision of empowering rural schools and
educating children in marginalized areas. The program started with one school bus that travelled
through the interiors of the districts of Gujarat bringing training to the teachers, exposure to the
children and innovation to the principals of the schools. Today, School On Wheels has reached out
to thousands of children across several villages, trained hundreds of teachers, built infrastructure in
many schools and changed the lives of millions of villagers.
School On Wheels currently works with 88 village schools in 53 villages across 3 districts in the state of
Gujarat, India. In these schools, the issues of education are addressed in a holistic manner, looking at all
possible gaps that need to be plugged. This involves working with all stakeholders in the ecosystem –
the school administrator, the teacher, the parents, the village community, the government officials and,
the children themselves.
Sister Nivedita Continuing Education Centre
Sister Nivedita Educational Complex believes that education is a lifelong process. Continuing Education
Centre is a centre for providing life-long education, a centre to provide alternate employment
opportunities for those who have not received complete education or formal education.
It aims to train people and provide them with skills that make them self-sufficient and capable of gaining
employment or starting a business of their own. The concept of continuing education is particularly
appropriate in a country like ours where a large number of people have been denied basic educational
facilities and even where such facilities exist, large numbers are unable to avail the same because of
socio-economic situations. We should therefore provide increasing opportunities for all adults to learn
according to their interest and needs and to ensure that every person has an opportunity to develop his
talent and is not deprived of facilities on account of his failure to go through the formal education
system at one stage or another.
The aim of this centre is:

To develop and use learning resources from the community as a whole and facilitate learning
through experience.
To transform schools and other such educational institutions into ‘human development
laboratories’. Encourage creativity.
To study the need of the various sections of society and students to develop need based
schemes of education.
To provide facilities to help bridge the gap between the educated and the uneducated.
To promote innovative education projects
To provide means for discussion groups, seminars, symposia, study circles, etc.

Following are the activities that have been started at the Continuing Education Centre:

Computer Centre
- The computer Centre mainly serves the poor and deprived women to teach them basic
computer skills. However, the computer center is open for all individuals as part of
continuing education center for children to adults willing to learn. The computer centre is
equipped with 12 state-of-the-art computer systems, printers, scanners and web cameras.
The centre provides 11 different types of course including MS Office, DTP, Visual Basics and,
Internet Surfing ranging from 1 month to 3 months duration. Till date, 900 students have
been trained in this centre.

Institute of Garment Making and Fashion Designing

- Institute of Garment Making & Fashion Designing was inaugurated on May 1, 1995. The
institute was set up to train middle class women in garment making so that they can earn
well. The Institute is furnished with 32 common half shuttle machines, 3 fashion maker
embroidery machines, 2 wool knitting machines and 3 leather machines with motor. The
skills imparted at this centre are spread across a wide range of activities like common
stitching skills, paper cutting, embroidery and fancy works, needle craft, summer training
classes, wool knitting classes and leather bags making training. These courses range from 1
year certificate course to 3 years government course of T.T.N.C. that enables students to
become teachers. The institute also awards scholarships to needy women and donates
sewing machines to four women every year. More than 6500 women have benefitted from
these courses.

Institute of Dance and Music
Learning of dance or music in India is not only about learning an art form in all its complexity
and richness, it is also learning about a civilisation that shaped and inspired it. It is about
knowing Indian creativity, expression and the cultural and spiritual sustenance of the people of
this country. It is also about encountering the unique synthesis of many traditions that reached
out to each other creating a repertory of artistic expression that is hard to match.
It is learning to listen to the heartbeat of India. Facilities are available to learn all types of
classical and traditional forms of dance and music.

Institute of English
We believe that each student’s English requirement is different and it needs to be addressed in
a customized manner. Depending on each student's needs and future plan, we draft individual
modules and design a learning plan that will be unique for him or her. Institute of English was
started to provide high standards of language teaching at reasonable fees, with students and
staff working together to create a friendly and productive atmosphere.
Institute of Karate and Self Defence
Our System improves both body and mind, empower you with a life-saving skill, it s exciting,
fascinating and great fun.
Each individual's progress is very important to us - and we recognise that we all have different
needs, preferences and calibre, especially girls. In a high stress situation, we are incapable of
carrying out techniques that involve fine or complex motor skills. Our techniques are more on
real rather than on reel situation. Please note that Self-defence training within our school is
highly controlled. The focus is not to hit hard and cause 'damage' to other individuals, however
it is to learn self-defence & improve confidence and fitness at the same time as having fun.
Educational and Vocational Guidance Bureau
Educational Guidance is to helping the persons to do better in their studies and to select courses
and schools that will fit to their tastes and abilities. It is closely related to vocational guidance,

the helping of persons to find the right kind of work. Education can also be defined as the
process of becoming an educated person. Earning a graduate degree will help you improve your
career, as most careers nowadays require at least a Bachelor´s degree. There are many places
where you can find all the support you need and all the sources of knowledge that can help you
build a career. Our objective and mission is to help students take a more informed decision and
also to let them optimize the choices.

Foreign University Information Bureau
We provide the information related to Foreign University Information by corresponding with the
university on student’s behalf and also get information from the citizens visited to our
organization from individual country.
Home Management Programme– Diploma in Home management.
Home Management encompasses both - art as well as science of management. Home
management essentially deals with different aspects of all house activities. Home Management
is not just restricted to nutrition or food, but it also covers subjects such as dietetics,
economics, hygiene, clothing, sociology, community living, home decoration, communication,
banking, elderly care, child development and family relations. Students, who are willing to
pursue his/her career in this field, must have a logical mind along with realistic approach and a

alanced attitude. Awareness and consciousness about right diet, lifestyle and health has
resulted in students becoming more inclined towards the field of home science. There are lots of
career opportunities in this field and it is one of the top career choices made by students.
- It not only empowers housewives to manage their home totally and skilfully, it has opened
new avenues and opportunities for students in all fields of life. There are broad arrays of job
opportunities in this field such as in pre-primary schools, primary schools, hospitals, welfare
organizations and counselling activities.
- It is not easy to manage multirole tasks that need to be tackled by any housewife. It is
necessary to have better skills and training in today’s modern and fast changing life. Today’s
kitchen also are more technological nowadays, as it is with many other household
equipments like, Washing machine, Dryer, Dish washer, Vacuum cleaner, Water filters, Flour
mills etc. Even the domestic help who might use such equipment need to be trained and
warned for safety as well as correct use.
High education is not required to manage these tasks successfully, but it certainly requires
basic education and systematic knowledge, skills and training to take care of all functions
and expectations of all family members. Any student with primary school education can
pursue this course.
This course of Home management contains various topics as under to especially satisfy this
need. Different recipes for lunch, dinner and snacks, Home decoration, House cleaning,
Kitchen equipments like, mixer, grinder, oven, toaster, juicer, gas, microwave etc., Other
household equipments like, refrigerator, Flour mill, Vacuum cleaner, Washing machine etc.,
Electronic equipments like, TV, Video Player, Music system etc. Telephonic communications,
First aid, Fire extinguishing, Home security, Optimum use of electricity, Child care and
Elderly care, Ironing, Gardening, Sewing and repairing, Budgeting and accounting,
preliminary knowledge of English and computers.
Working women, Professionals and aged persons whose children might have settled
elsewhere in larger cities in India, or abroad need such home managers who can successfully
manage entire home. This creates good opportunity and demand for such skilled and
trained experts.
There is a large demand o from foreign countries of such students who have completed this
course.
Sister Nivedita Continuing Education Centre organizes various full days, Home
Management Workshops on above topics. Nearly, 90 such workshops have already
been conducted till date, imparting demonstration and training by many functional
experts in the field benefitting more than 1000 women.

Summer Training classes
Do women want to learn only the art of cooking and embroidery these days? Not anymore. The
new age woman wants something innovative. Drop into any traditional summer training class
for women in the city, and you will begin to agree.
Some of the subjects they are interested in include — 'best out of waste', flower making, cloth
painting, table manners, how to welcome guests, how to arrange traditional function, how to
decorate walls in ethnic style etc. We organize summer training classes for Women and School
Children.
Sister Nivedita Continuing Education Centre has been established as a learner centered training centre,
much different from instructional pedagogy. Its aim is to work for promoting life-long education. This
would act as an alternative to the close door formal education.

Principal D. P. Joshi Public Library
Principal D.P. Joshi Public Library was opened with the generous donation of Shri Jyotasnaben Joshi &
Smt. Ushaben Jani. The library houses more than 25,000 books and 80 magazines and newspapers. We
also have separate sections for women, children, and audio-video material.
The library hosts a number of activities to cultivate the habit of reading among students. The library
arranges book exhibitions based on various themes every month. It also holds lectures of eminent
writers and poets. It arranges “Reading workshop” periodically. It provides books, journals and
magazines for more than 88 rural schools of School on Wheels program. The library encourages the
research work and arranges to get required educational content from other resourses if required.

This library is open for general public. If a member of the public would like to have the privilege of
checking out materials, then he/she will have to become the member. Students of Sister Nivedita
School also have the privilege of using the library's facilities, including the ability to checkout materials,
free of cost.
On the first Wednesday of every month, the library also organizes "Granth Gosthi" or the book lover’s
club meeting. An author, poet or the creator is invited to present the gist of the book and present the
heart of this precious creation and the emotions that inspired the writer. Sometimes, participants
assemble and discuss the books that they have read and have been highly impressed by the content.
Any participant is allowed to present and explain the content in brief based on the books, VCD/DVD,
movie etc. from all around the world. The aim of the book lovers’ club is to enrich all the participants
with valuable knowledge and as many good books as possible.
Best Teacher Award
We believe that only dedicated, true teachers can change the society. They have the master key to
shape the future generation.
In our country, during ancient times, the teacher was called Guru and even today, we respect the good
teacher as almost the God, who leads students to light. He shows the right path to students.
To encourage sincere and dedicated teachers from all over the state of Gujarat, we honor them, one
each from pre-primary section, primary section and secondary section every year. There is no such
award for pre-primary teachers in Gujarat, other than ours!
A search and scrutinizing committee consisting of well known educationists select the teachers. These
selected teachers are then honored by giving them "Sister Nivedita Best Teacher Award".
Total of 54 such awards have been presented since 1995, that include cash prize, set of books and a
trophy to each school and teachers, at the hands of eminent educationists.

Dhanvantary Aushadhiya Upavan
Ayurvedic medicine means treatment by natural elements to remain healthy. Great Ayurvedacharyas
like Charak, Sushrut, Sushen etc realized medicinal qualities and importance of each plant growing in
nature and scientifically found effective ways of treating the sick without side effects.
Sister Nivedita Foundation has planted and raised more than 100 such precious medicinal plants in its
specially reserved 1500 sq ft. garden space to utilize age old proven knowledge and wisdom that provide
cheap medicines without side effects and is being practiced since centuries.
Ayurveda has now been accepted world wide as an effective alternative medicine and our purpose is to
educate interested persons about its properties, characteristics and use while observing the plant
physically.
Scholarship grant for girl students, up to standard 12 th , And “Educate
to Graduate”, higher education interest free loan scholarship with
help of Share & Care Foundation, USA, to all needy students.
We believe in making education sustainable and long-term. One of our biggest successes has
been to control the drop-out rate of adolescent students, especially girls, from schools. Many of
rural students do not have the means to continue further studies after primary school (Grade 8).
Also, most of the high schools and higher education institutes are in bigger towns and urban
areas and hence, students need to leave home and pay for accommodation to live and study in
towns and cities. This becomes a financially unviable option for the parents who are
economically backward and are not able to afford such expenses.
To make education long-lasting, especially for girls, Sister Nivedita Educational Complex
instituted the Scholarship program at the time of “Amrut Mahotsav” celebration of the founder
Smt. Ushaben Jani that provides financial reprieve to girl students to some extent. The
Scholarship program is for girl students who pursue high school education up to standard 12 th .
These scholarships are awarded on merit based on one’s performance in the examinations.

Till now, Sister Nivedita Educational Complex has awarded 1412 girl students with
scholarships worth Rs.7, 400,000/-.
To provide support for higher education to boys and girls both, we instituted the interest free
Loan program sponsored by Share & Care Foundation, USA that allows them to borrow some
funds towards their higher education and repay it in instalments, usually after they start earning.
This has been one of the most empowering programs as more and more students find it
extremely difficult to pursue higher education due to very high educational expenses. Till date,
Sister Nivedita Educational Complex has given interest free loans worth Rs. 20,141,000/- to
267 students.

Samudgar

Samudgar is a quarterly journal of Sister Nivedita Educational Complex published since June 7, 1995.
The aim of the journal is to include information that is useful to principals, teachers, students and
parents. It includes passages and articles by eminent scholars, authors and poets on various issues and
problems revolving around the education sector. These serve as sources of inspiration as well as a
constant guidance for its readers. We encourage students towards creative writing and publish their
poems, articles etc. regularly.
The publication also introduces the readers to a variety of books along with their critically analyzed
reviews. Samudgar also uses this as an opportunity to thank all its donors and mention their valuable
monetary contributions. More than just a storehouse of information, Samudgar acts as a quarterly
report on all activities of Sister Nivedita Educational Complex. It provides detailed information on the
activities and programs that have been implemented in the previous quarter and the achievements
thereof. Dignitaries, experts and visitors express their opinions and views about the Sister Nivedita
Educational Complex in Samudgar.
Samudgar is an attempt by Sister Nivedita Educational Complex to remain connected with its network of
donors and beneficiaries by keeping them updated at every step of our ladder of progress.
