SCHOlARSHIPS & ENDOWED CHAIRS<br />

Grants or contributions at certain levels from foundations or individuals<br />

can establish, in perpetuity, an Endowed Chair in honor or in memory of<br />

a designated individual or individuals. This amount can come from one<br />

source or be pooled from a number of sources.<br />

Only sixteen chairs are available for this designation. Eight have been<br />

endowed to date, with eight still remaining.<br />

The chairs that have been endowed are:<br />

• Concertmaster - Donald and Sylvia Robinson Family Foundation Chair<br />

• Principal Violin II - Chair in Memory of James M. Patton<br />

• Principal Cello - Robert and Jean Walsh Chair<br />

• flute/Piccolo - Chair in Memory of Marie Maazel from the Drue<br />

Heinz Foundation<br />

• Oboe - Chair in Memory of Vira Ingham Heinz<br />

• Clarinet - Aaron Silberman Memorial Chair<br />

• Trumpet - Chair in Honor of Richard J. Scarton Established by Friends<br />

and Family<br />

• Keyboard (Piano, Organ, Celeste) - Robert and Jean Walsh Chair<br />

Remaining chairs are:<br />

• Principal Viola • Principal Bass • Bassoon • Horn<br />

• Trombone • Tuba • Harp • Percussion<br />

Scholarships and awards available to current PYSO members:<br />

• The Marie Maazel <strong>Orchestra</strong> Dues Scholarship fund provides<br />

financial assistance to members who need help paying the annual<br />

membership dues.<br />

• The Markus and Esther Klein Scholarship fund provides financial<br />

assistance to string players who are graduating high school and<br />

continuing their musical education at the college level.<br />

• The DeBroff-Yahr Concertmaster Award underwrites a portion of the<br />

concertmaster’s dues.<br />

• The Karen leininger Viola Award underwrites a portion of the principal<br />

violist’s dues.<br />

• The Paul J. Ross Young Musicians’ fund is available to PYSO string<br />

players, but it is administered through the <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> Foundation. It<br />

provides financial assistance for dues scholarship to PYSO members as<br />

well as TRYPO members.<br />

• The Henry Marconi Scholarship provides the opportunity for certain<br />

PYSO members to coach with Mr. J. Richard Page, principal bass<br />

clarinet with the <strong>Pittsburgh</strong> <strong>Symphony</strong> <strong>Orchestra</strong>.<br />
