SCHOlARSHIPS & ENDOWED CHAIRS
Grants or contributions at certain levels from foundations or individuals
can establish, in perpetuity, an Endowed Chair in honor or in memory of
a designated individual or individuals. This amount can come from one
source or be pooled from a number of sources.
Only sixteen chairs are available for this designation. Eight have been
endowed to date, with eight still remaining.
The chairs that have been endowed are:
• Concertmaster - Donald and Sylvia Robinson Family Foundation Chair
• Principal Violin II - Chair in Memory of James M. Patton
• Principal Cello - Robert and Jean Walsh Chair
• flute/Piccolo - Chair in Memory of Marie Maazel from the Drue
Heinz Foundation
• Oboe - Chair in Memory of Vira Ingham Heinz
• Clarinet - Aaron Silberman Memorial Chair
• Trumpet - Chair in Honor of Richard J. Scarton Established by Friends
and Family
• Keyboard (Piano, Organ, Celeste) - Robert and Jean Walsh Chair
Remaining chairs are:
• Principal Viola • Principal Bass • Bassoon • Horn
• Trombone • Tuba • Harp • Percussion
Scholarships and awards available to current PYSO members:
• The Marie Maazel Orchestra Dues Scholarship fund provides
financial assistance to members who need help paying the annual
membership dues.
• The Markus and Esther Klein Scholarship fund provides financial
assistance to string players who are graduating high school and
continuing their musical education at the college level.
• The DeBroff-Yahr Concertmaster Award underwrites a portion of the
concertmaster’s dues.
• The Karen leininger Viola Award underwrites a portion of the principal
violist’s dues.
• The Paul J. Ross Young Musicians’ fund is available to PYSO string
players, but it is administered through the Pittsburgh Foundation. It
provides financial assistance for dues scholarship to PYSO members as
well as TRYPO members.
• The Henry Marconi Scholarship provides the opportunity for certain
PYSO members to coach with Mr. J. Richard Page, principal bass
clarinet with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
