2 WElCOME fROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends of PYSO: There are many things that make this time of year joyous. Among the contributing factors are the growing hours of daylight, milder weather and the budding of trees. We just feel better and more connected with the renewing world around us. Further adding to this sense of rejuvenation is the anticipation of the sounds of spring like the cacophony of birds singing in the early morning or the melodious sounds of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO) at their spring concert. Our dedicated musicians of the PYSO happily have not been hibernating during this past winter. They have been busy honing their musical skill, perfecting their syncopation and exercising their artistry under the baton of Lawrence Loh. The concert that you are attending today is a result of their commitment to their creativity. Our board of directors shares the commitment of the young musicians. We want to ensure the survival and growth of symphonic music through education, access and resources. To that end, we have created an Instrument Fund to provide financial resources to renew and replace instruments on an ongoing basis. We also have been making preparation for the annual fundraiser entitled “Fascinating Rhythm” that will be held on June 2, 2012. Efforts such as these depend on the collective contribution and participation of our friends and family like you. We are pleased to note special thanks to Wells Fargo and the Binkley Family for their recent generous financial contribution to the PYSO. Let’s spring forward together with the joy of the season and renewed zeal to support our wonderful musicians of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra! Kimberly Jackson President
HISTORY Vira I. Heinz Marie Maazel HISTORY Ladi Stanisha – Founding President Stanley Levin – Founding Music Director 1945 – PYSO is founded and the first concert is performed at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. Stanley Levin is the founding Music Director and Ladi Stanisha is the first President. 1954 – After a brief hiatus, PYSO is reorganized with Vira I. Heinz as President and Marie Maazel as Managing Director 1962 – PYSO becomes affiliated with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra 1971 – Opening of Heinz Hall / PYSO Parents’ Association is formed. WORlD PREMIERES 1991 – John Anthony Lennon’s “Suite of Fables” 1993 – Morton Gould’s “The Jogger and the Dinosaur” 1995 – Morton Gould’s “Hosedown” 2005 – David Stock’s “Clarinet Concerto” 2009 – John Harbison’s “Mary Lou” Conductor Stanley Levin with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Music Hall in 1947. 3
