From The Worthy Grand Master
Brothers,
There truly has never been a better time
to be a Kappa Sigma! This issue of the Caduceus
celebrates the results of the 2011-2012 academic year,
and I am very proud to announce that this will go down in
history as our Order’s greatest year!
Allow me to share just a few of our many accomplishments this past year:
• Today, the Star & Crescent is represented on 305 campuses, more than any
other men’s college fraternity.
• This year, our chapters and colonies pledged more men than any other
fraternity in history, setting a new World Record!
• More men were initiated into Kappa Sigma this year than in any other year
in our 142 years of existence.
• For the first time ever, 45% of our undergraduate Brothers have at least one
certificate of Ritual Proficiency, demonstrating their commitment to our
Rituals and the values contained within, and the rejection of negative forces
such as hazing.
• Kappa Sigma donated almost $1.8 million to charitable causes, and
performed almost 500,000 hours of service this past year, making a real and
significant difference in countless lives across North America.
• The re-launched Jacksons Men program has been a huge success, with 150
new Jackson’s Men committed and almost $1 Million in donations pledged to
the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund.
WGM Nascimento with the Brothers of Kappa-Eta.
I have been fortunate to travel across the continent this year, visiting
with Kappa Sigmas from New York to California, and am satisfied that our
undergraduate Brothers are among the very brightest young men on college
campuses today. I have been particularly pleased to participate in the installation
of 6 new chapters this year – especially the re-installation of my
home chapter, the Kappa-Eta chapter at Widener University.
As this issue goes to press, the HQ staff and volunteers,
led by Executive Director Mic Wilson and Conclave Deputy
Commissioner Tom Kelly, and are hard at work finalizing
our 2012 Leadership Conferences in Las Vegas and New
Orleans. We are expecting a record attendance at these
A GREATER CAUSE
A Greater Cause Commission
Announces Two New Major Initiatives
By Josh M. Zimmer, A Greater Cause Commissioner (Xi-Lambda, University of Delaware, ‘97)
The A Greater Cause commission
went into this year’s
Leadership Conferences coming
off of one of the best years in
the fraternity’s history. Kappa
Sigma set a new record this past
year by giving $1.7 million dollars
to charitable organizations and
causes. This new record was due
in no small part to the tireless
dedication and hard work of our
undergraduate and alumni brothers,
who together committed to
making our world a better place.
All Kappa Sigma’s should have tremendous
pride in what has been
accomplished this year!
In order to build upon the tremendous success from
the previous year, two major initiatives will be introduced
this summer at Leadership Conference. The first initiative to
be rolled out is Kappa Sigma’s Day of Service. This fall, the
A Greater Cause commission is asking all brothers to join
together on one day to give back to our surrounding communities.
Chapters will be given several suggested events
to participate on the Day of Service. The goal is that every
brother takes the challenge to be part of Kappa Sigma’s largest
scale philanthropy effort in our history.
» BEGINNING FALL 2012 «
The second initiative is Kappa Sigma’s partnership
with Tee it Up For the Troops (www.teeitupforthetroops.
org), a non-profit, grassroots organization whose mission
is to “honor, respect, remember and support all those who
have served in our Armed Forces for this great nation.” Tee
it Up for The Troops (TIUFTT) has raised over $3 million
since its inaugural year in 2005 through golfing events held
throughout the country. Those funds have been distributed
to numerous programs that support military veterans and
their families. Kappa Sigma will be working with TIUFTT this
year by having brothers volunteer to help with golf outings
Kappa Sigma set a new record this past year by giving $1.7
million dollars to charitable organizations and causes!
eing held throughout the country, especially their mar-
quee event, the National Day of Golf, which is being held
on Friday September 8th in Mendota Heights, MN. Kappa
Sigma will also work to help TIUFTT kick-off their newly
formed “Freedom is Sweet” campaign designed to engage
the restaurant industry in supporting their mission. Our
partnership with TIUFTT is a perfect alignment with Kappa
Sigma’s Military Heroes campaign and both organizations
look to enjoy a mutual partnership in giving back to the
military community.
As with all areas of fraternity life, Kappa Sigma con-
tinues to be the leader in the Greek world in philanthropic
efforts. When it comes to helping those less fortunate then
ourselves or supporting those who have sacrificed for our
country, being the best is never enough. There will always
be opportunities for Kappa Sigma to help make the world a
better place and it is a moral imperative that each of us look
to make the most out of every possible opportunity. H
A GREATER CAUSE
Pi-Chi Brothers & Alumni Pull Together
For Shooting Victims’ Families
By David R. Brinkman, AA, Pi-Chi Chapter, Lake Erie College (Theta-Upsilon, Miami University, ‘81)
On the morning of February 27, 2011, tragedy
struck the city of Chardon, Ohio. News spread
like wildfire throughout the small community,
about 40 miles east of Cleveland, that
a gunman had opened fire in the high
school cafeteria. It was just after
7:30 am and students were settling
in to their first period classes when
the shots rang out…
The principal made the announcement, but everyone
could tell from his voice that this was not
a drill. The school of nearly 1,100 students
immediately went on lockdown, as they
had practiced many times before. The
alleged assailant, a 17 year old male
who was waiting in the cafeteria
for a transfer bus to an alternative
high school in a neighboring city,
unexpectedly opened fire. The 100 students who were beginning
their study hall period scattered from the cafeteria
as the attacker took aim at his victims. He then ran through
the hallways, chasing another of his presumed targets. The
gunman was flushed from the building by a heroic effort
from a Football Coach, fled toward a local nature preserve,
but was apprehended by County Deputies within hours.
The community was in shock. Every local television
and radio station interrupted programming. Even CNN,
MSN, and other worldwide news outlets were reporting
the story from Chardon High School. Parents were search-
16 The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma • Summer 2012
ing for answers about the safety of their children, as well as
the teachers and staff in the building. Students could only
send sporadic and abbreviated texts and messages to family
members as cell phone lines were jammed.
But the damage was done… six students were
shot, five of whom were taken to nearby hospitals
for treatment. Within a few days, three of the students
had passed away from gunshots to the head
and another, as of this writing, continues to receive
hospital treatment, paralyzed from the waist down.
At Lake Erie College, just ten miles north of
Chardon, concerns were shared by students who
may have graduated from, or had siblings at, the
nearby high school. Brothers of the Pi-Chi
Chapter at Lake Erie, when learning of the
incident, immediately realized that
they had direct ties to the tragedy. A
recently graduated Founding Father
had a brother and the Alumnus Advisor
had a son, both Juniors at Chardon
High. Immediately, Brothers began texting and calling,
in hopes that these Brothers’ family members were not
injured in the shootings. Fortunately, they were not, but Pi-
Chi’s caring for the victims and their families and desire to
help out continued.
Pi-Chi Brothers immediately jumped into action to
partner with the local Waffle House Restaurant to host a
fundraiser for the Chardon Angels of Hope Fund, benefitting
the victims’ families. Brothers sent a press release to
local television and radio stations, as well as local newspapers,
to advertise the event. Businesses, Staples and Reed

Above: Brothers and staff at the Waffle House in Chadron, OH.
Activewear, helped out by donating flyer and t-shirt printing
services, respectively. Brothers, Pledges, and even local
Alumni joined in to work the evening shift at Waffle House for
three consecutive days, doing everything but cooking. Brothers
also circulated, sharing the story of their fundraiser with
travelers who had only heard of the tragedy on television.
Though scheduled during a Spring Break weekend,
shifts were completely covered by Kappa Sigma workers,
and the event was a success. An article to advertise the
event, as well as a recap during the event, appeared in
the local newspaper. A video interview with three Pi-Chi
Brothers appeared in the online version of their paper, as
well. Waffle House donated a percentage of the evening’s
gross receipts and Brothers also collected donations at
the cash register. The Waffle House General Manager
was so moved by the outpouring of support and the
Kappa Sigmas’ dedication to the event, that he personally
matched 50% of what was collected in the donation
bucket. Though a small chapter from a small school, Pi-Chi
raised over $900… one of the most successful fundraisers
in the Chapter’s short history. H
BROTHERS IN ACTION
The War on Hazing Starts with YOU!
By Richard N. Whirley, Brothers in Action Deputy Commissioner (Lambda-Xi, Georgia College, ‘03)
Originally, Kappa Sigma was founded for mutual protection
against physical and mental hazard. A group of men
banded together to prevent the ruthless Cossa from
penetrating their ranks and causing the detriment
of their society. They found like-minded
men and invited them to contribute to
that protection and to share in its mutual
benefits. The good news is that it
worked… at least, temporarily.
Some years later, nearing the
1970s and 80s, the ruthless effect of
Cossa somehow reared its ugly head.
However, this time Cossa appeared
from within our own Order. Posing
himself as a trusted and true Brother,
Cossa slowly managed to penetrate
and harm our ranks by turning us against
ourselves. He twisted and skewed Kappa
Sigma’s life lessons under the misused guise of
silence and secrecy. Once he had our unwavering
commitment to what we thought was a society of friends and
brothers, he then manipulated our teachings and abused our
trust. He began to teach us that hazing created brotherhood
and that surviving a treacherous and tormenting pledgeship
would somehow make us a better Kappa
Sigma, a better citizen, and a better man.
Too many of us blindly and willingly
followed Cossa’s teachings, and in many
cases caused irreparable damage to our
own beloved Brotherhood. Collectively,
we have been forced to close over
1,000 years of Kappa Sigma history at
Chapters across the country because
our men lost the courage to stand
up against Cossa when he presented
himself under the secret signs of Kappa
Sigma. Will we let this continue? Will we
let Cossa lead us to our own destruction?
Will we fail the men that came before us and
let Cossa be triumphant? Brothers, remember
that “the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was
convincing the world that he didn’t exist.” H
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing”
PREVENT THE PROBLEM:
Creating Effective BIA for Pledges
By Corey G. Hill (Theta-Psi, Oklahoma City University, ‘05)
Last summer, Kappa Sigma Fraternity declared a war on
hazing and launched an initiative to empower every brother
to confront and eliminate hazing from their chapter. This
past Founders Day, 14 chapters sought assistance to reform
their pledge programs. The Brothers in Action (BIA) Commission,
with the help of local volunteers, assisted these chapters
in creating and implementing
phenomenal improvements to the
pledge education process.
Through these improvements
chapters have experienced an
overall improvement in chapter
operations; new initiates feel more
empowered and work more collaboratively
with the entire chapter
after receiving a proper education
focusing on the history and
traditions of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Chapter leadership has also
reported increased participation in
chapter philanthropy and community
service events, membership
on committees, and commitment to learning the ritual. The
best way to eliminate hazing from your chapter is having an
effective Brothers in Action for pledges program.
These chapters improved their BIA for pledges programs
by focusing on the 2 primary objectives of pledge
education: 1) Learning the history and traditions of Kappa
Sigma Fraternity, and 2) Learning chapter operations
through integration into chapter operations.
Learning the history and traditions of Kappa Sigma
Fraternity is essential to beginning to understand the
BROTHERS IN ACTION
values of Kappa Sigma. Bononia Docet is an aid to chapters
in the development of the pledge program. Bononia
Docet outlines the history and traditions of Kappa Sigma,
and through an effective pledge education program,
brothers will help pledges learn the history by being
positive role models embodying the values the history
and traditions encapsulate.
By participating in or allowing
actions that are contrary to
Kappa Sigma values, initiates are
causing extensive damage to the
education process.
Learning chapter operations
through integration into chapter
operations ensures new initiates
have a working understanding of
the chapter and introduces the
hands-on training Kappa Sigma
provides. Pledges should have the
opportunity to learn how to run
different functions of the chapter.
From planning a community
service event to working on the chapter budget, your BIA for
Pledges program is an opportunity for you to train the next
group of leaders how to run the chapter and give them a
head start on building the relationships with administration,
sorority leadership, and others on campus to ensure the
chapter is successful.
If you are looking for ways to improve your BIA for
Pledges program contact the Brothers in Action Commission.
The Commission stands ready to help you improve
your program. H
OUR RITUAL
Kappa Sigma Enjoys Best Ritual Year on Record
By James H. S. Levine, Ritualist (Xi-Lambda, University of Delaware, ‘97)
During the 2011-2012 year, Kappa Sigma broke countless
records, as Brothers worked tirelessly to surpass so many of
our prior benchmarks. Perhaps nowhere has Kappa Sigma
smashed so many records over the past 12 monts, however,
as with our Ritual accomplishments. Over the past year, we
have seen nearly all of our prior Ritual records eclipsed and
new all-time highs achieved across the board.
This year Kappa Sigma awarded 4,814 Ritual Proficiency
Certificates, a 49% increase over 2010-2011 and the highest
number ever awarded in a single year! We marked the
seventh consecutive year of growth in the number of Certificates
awarded, and the 4,814 Certificates are more than
double the number awarded just five years ago. As the year
concluded, nearly half of our undergraduate Brothers held at
least one Ritual Proficiency Certificate – an astounding 45%
of all undergraduate Initiates. Additionally, 15% of undergraduate
Initiates held two or more Certificates – a remarkable
accomplishment especially in light of the record-setting
growth in our overall undergraduate membership. Both of
these proficiency percentages are the highest year-end levels
on record.
Also during the 2011-2012 year, a record-setting 51
Brothers became Masters of the Ritual – a 25% increase over
the prior year. These Brothers include Los Angeles District
Grand Master Michael D. Preston, Jr. (Kappa-Eta, Widener
University, ’92) and Ritual Commission Member Elliott Bert
Hopper (Kappa-Iota, Middle Tennessee State University, ’91),
both of whom earned Explanatory Lecture Certificates and
became Masters of The Ritual some 20 years following their
Initiations. Brother Chris W. Holloway (Rho-Pi, Young Harris
College, ’12) became the fastest to achieve such recognition,
becoming a Master of the Ritual only 16 days following his
Initiation. Additionally, Brother Zachary P. Ringlein (Nu-
Upsilon, Winthrop University, ’11) because the 500th Master
of the Ritual in Kappa Sigma history! All told, Brothers from
34 Chapters became Masters of the Ritual this year, with 11
Brothers becoming the first in their Chapter’s history to attain
this extraordinary accomplishment.
Our Ritual is the most special part of being a Kappa
Sigma. All of our most important occasions as undergraduates
(and sometimes alumni) in Kappa Sigma are marked by
performance of the Ritual. When we become pledges, we are
exposed to the Pledging Ceremony. When we are initiated,
we experience the Initiatory and the Explanatory Lecture.
When we become officers of our Chapter, we receive our
positions through the Installation of Officers Ceremony. These
events are made even more special when the ceremonies
with which they are marked are performed properly and with
the dramatic presentation Brother Stephen Alonzo Jackson
and our forefathers intended. Learning and understanding
the Ritual is an instrumental part of being a Kappa Sigma, and
only by constantly seeking to improve our knowledge and
“Our Ritual is the most special part of being a Kappa Sigma... [it] is
the tie that binds all true Kappa Sigmas to one another. Embracing
and exhibiting the principles the Ritual teaches us, makes us better
men and Brothers and strenthens the Order as a whole. ”
20 The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma • Summer 2012

proficiency of these ceremonies can we truly achieve all that
we are capable of as Kappa Sigmas.
As we embark on the 2012-2013 year, I am confident
that even more Ritual successes lie ahead. Over the coming
year, our Brothers will continue to push themselves to
improve their Ritual knowledge and proficiency, fulfill the
expectation of Brother Jackson and strive for new records,
new heights, and a Brotherhood more dedicated to the
principles that make Kappa Sigma exceptional. The time is
now to commit to ensuring that our Ritual continues to be
performed as Brother Jackson intended, and that all of our
Chapters are prepared to properly perform the Ritual for the
generations of Brothers who have yet to join our noble Order.
To that end, I challenge each of our Brothers to push themselves
to achieve even greater Ritual successes and ensure
that when we meet in Las Vegas in 2013 for the 69th Biennial
Grand Conclave, more than half of our Brothers are Ritually
proficient for the first time in Kappa Sigma’s history! H
51 Brothers Recognized as NEW Masters of The Ritual
Our Ritual is the tie that binds all true Kappa Sigmas to one another. Embracing and exhibiting the principles the Ritual teaches us
makes us better men and Brothers, and strengthens the Order as a whole. The Ritual Commission congratulates the 51 Brothers
who, during the 2011-2012 year, earned one of Kappa Sigma’s most extraordinary individual achievements: Master of the Ritual.
These Brothers have demonstrated the dedication to commit the time and effort needed to make our Fraternity better and are
an inspiration to all Kappa Sigmas. (An * indicates a first Master of the Ritual in the chapter’s history)
Five Chapters Win Ritual Competition
Additional Delegates Sent to Leadership Conferences
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Ritual Commission
sponsored a competition among all Kappa Sigma Chapters.
The Chapter in each Area that earned the most George
Miles Arnold Cup points from August 1, 2011 to May 1, 2012
was awarded an additional four free Leadership Conference
registration packages and a second hotel room for those
Brothers this summer in New Orleans or Las Vegas.
The response to the competition exceeded all expectations.
Over the course of the year, Brothers from 213
Chapters earned Certificates, representing over 80% of active
Kappa Sigma Chapters. It was remarkable to see the
great effort put forth by so many Brothers to earn Certificates
and points for their Chapters. Chapters and Districts
pushed one another to reach new levels of excellence, and
competition in most of the Areas was fierce throughout
the year, with many Chapters setting their own new Chapter
records for Ritual proficiency.
At the conclusion of the competition, however, there
could only be one winning Chapter from each Area, and the
Ritual Commission is honored to announce the following
Chapters as the winners of the 2011-2012 Ritual Competition:
Area 1: Xi-Rho (Richard Stockton College)
Area 2: Omicron-Lambda (Southern Polytechnic State Univ.)
Area 3: Chi (Purdue University)
Area 4: Epsilon-Mu (University of Tulsa)
Area 5: Theta-Zeta (Eastern New Mexico University)
The Brothers from these Chapters demonstrated remarkable
commitment to the Order, and we are proud to
recognize them for their zeal and dedication to the Ritual,
the core of our beliefs. The Ritual Commission commends
all Brothers who earned Certificates and participated in
this year’s competition!
Improve Your Chapter’s Ritual Proficiency
By Focusing on the Pledging Ceremony
This year, a record number of Kappa Sigma Chapters
achieved new levels of Ritual success. More Chapters achieved
personal records for Chapter proficiency than ever before, and
an astounding 18 Chapters ended the year with 100% of their
members (including spring pledges) Ritually proficient.
One of the primary drivers behind this success is the
number of Chapters that incorporate Ritual education into
their Brothers In Action for pledges programs. Pledges learn
the portions of the Pledging Ceremony that they experienced
when they were conducted through the Ceremony and, after
Initiation, learn the complete Ceremony and test for proficiency.By
exposing pledges early in their pledgeship to the
principles upon which our great Fraternity was founded, we
ensure that they better understand what it means to be a
Kappa Sigma, and how they can contribute to the success of
the Chapter and the Order as a whole.
“It’s something we’ve been doing for years,” says Xi-Beta
(Northeastern University) Grand Master of Ceremonies Andrew
Murray. “All pledges learn the Pledging Ceremony and after
their Initiation, most want to earn additional Certificates.”
The Xi-Beta Chapter has won multiple Ritual awards, and is
one of only four Chapters that received 100% Ritual Proficiency
Awards each of the past two years.
While Xi-Beta was an early adopter of the approach,
many Chapters have followed their lead. Past Xi-Rho (Richard
Stockton College) Ritual Chair Ken Hellings recalls when his
Chapter first began incorporating Ritual into its BIA program.
“At first, some Chapter members were a little uneasy about
pledges learning the Ritual, but we had heard about other
Chapters’ successes and decided to give it a try. We were
amazed at how quickly and easily it changed the entire Chapter’s
Ritual outlook,” says Brother Hellings, who helped lead
the charge at Xi-Rho.
“Not only was it an opportunity to show our pledges how
important Ritual is to our brotherhood, it also became an
extremely deep and meaningful experience for them. It was
an exercise of trust, patience and confidence that unified our
Chapter, as only Ritual can.”
Xi-Rho’s experience is shared by the Omicron-Lambda
Chapter (Southern Polytechnic State University). “Our Chapter
(…and teaching it to your pledges!)
OUR RITUAL
had struggled with Ritual since we were founded,” says Grand
Master of Ceremonies Trey Mathews. “We were thinking about
how the Chapter could improve and make Ritual more of a priority.
Once the pledges started, the Brothers began studying as
well. None of the big brothers wanted to be outshone by their
littles. It really helped us establish a positive Ritual culture, and
we are confident it will remain like this for years to come.”
There are many different approaches Chapters can take
when teaching the Pledging Ceremony. Some Chapters choose
to teach during pledge class or study hours, while others use a
more targeted one-on-one technique.
“Big brothers are responsible for teaching their littles, and
then they spend some time during pledge class to make sure
everyone is learning correctly,” says Xi-Rho’s Hellings. “The personal
teaching is one of the primary reasons why it has worked
so well for us.”
“The most important thing was to develop a plan and stick
to it,” says Brother Mathews. “Once our BIA program was set,
it was easy to keep to the schedule. When the pledges test for
proficiency the day after Initiation and start studying for additional
Certificates, it’s awesome to know that they understand
and appreciate the Ritual.”
In addition to helping increase a Chapter’s proficiency,
learning the Ceremony helps pledges understand their obligations
and gives them additional insight into what it means to be
a Kappa Sigma. Studying the Ritual also helps integrate pledges
with the Chapter, which makes them more productive Brothers
following their Initiation.
Chapters should, however, take great care to properly instruct
pledges to protect the secrecy of the Pledging Ceremony,
as we do the entire Ritual. We should explain the importance of
Ritual privacy, that they are being exposed to something truly
unique, and that all efforts must be taken to conceal the Ritual
from non-members.
As we celebrate the successes of the past year and
continue to push toward new Ritual achievements, the Ritual
Commission strongly encourages all Chapters to incorporate
the Pledging Ceremony into their Brothers In Action for pledges
programs. Please contact a Ritual Commission member anytime
for Ritual assistance. H
Executive Committee. Brother O’Dwyer has provided ongoing
leadership to the Brothers of Nu-Gamma Chapter to help
rebuild New Orleans, Louisiana. These efforts have continued
since the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in
2005. Brother O’Dwyer and the Brothers from Nu-Gamma
Chapter have been instrumental in cleaning and refurbishing
homes of the elderly and disabled, fire houses used by the
New Orleans Fire Department and playgrounds throughout
the community that have fallen into disrepair. On January
14, 2011, following the most successful community service
trip by the Nu-Gamma Chapter, New Orleans Mayor Mitch
The Endowment Fund of Kappa Sigma Fraternity
launched the Brotherhood Above All Campaign in November
of 2011 and at the close of the 2011-2012 year has
raised almost $1 million in pledges. These pledges have
been generated primarily through the Jackson’s Men program.
Almost 150 Brothers have signed up to be one of Jackson’s
Men since November and almost 100 chapters have
made a commitment to the Campaign as Jackson’s Chapters.
Since the 1989 launch of the Jackson’s Men program, 3,233
Brothers have become one of Jackson’s Men.
“The response to the initial launch of the Brotherhood
Above All campaign has been extraordinary.” said Worthy
Grand Master & Endowment Fund Trustee S. Christian Nascimento.
“I am most proud of the alumni who, despite being
away from their undergraduate days for some time, are
giving back to keep Kappa Sigma strong, and of the undergraduates
that have committed to giving.”
the Jackson’s Men program. Those levels are Standard Level
($1,000), Ruby Level ($1500), Pearl Level ($2500), Emerald
Fund has established a goal to sign up 2,500 new Jackson’s
Men in the five-year campaign. These Brothers have made
a commitment to assure that the Kappa Sigma Fraternity
remains the Most Preferred Fraternity in the World today.
Chapters of Kappa Sigma are also able to participate by
giving to the Endowment Fund at the same levels, and have
responded in force. “The Omicron-Upsilon chapter committed
to become a Jackson’s Chapter because our chapter recognized
the importance of continued education. There is no
better way to ensure the continued growth of our great Order
• Retire the debt of Kappa Sigma International Headquarters
The Endowment Fund and the Fraternity highlighted
these efforts at the donor recognition event that was
held at the International Headquarters on Founder’s Day,
December 12th, 2011. Over 100 Brothers attended and
were updated on the campaign and the State of the Order.
Those in attendance were also treated to a keynote
address by Endowment Fund Trustee and U.S. Senator
Richard M. Burr.
The work of the Endowment Fund will help secure
the future of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Endowment
great benefit for our undergraduate members who excel
in academics, supporting their local community, and demonstration
of leadership, it is also a great rush tool. Many
chapters have mentioned how they use the Scholarship
Leadership Awards as a rush tool, in addition to all the
other benefits Kappa Sigma has to offer. They have also
expressed how this can not only make an impact on the
Par For
The Course
If you could be anything in the world,
what would it be?
“A dog with his head out a car window.”
Such was the ethos of John Nelson Frankel. Since his
death on December 30th, 2010, the Delta Chapter of
Davidson College has ensured John’s significance is known
far beyond the time at college. With the help of friends,
family, and fellow students, the Brothers have raised over
$110,000 in cash and have secured $55,000 in future
pledges to endow the John Frankel Memorial Scholarship.
In just a number of months, his memory has provoked such
an immense groundswell of support that Davidson College
already has the scholarship’s first recipient on campus.
John’s lively, ever-sarcastic spirit lives on.
Yet John’s significance echoes far outside the Delta
Chapter and his roles as Grand Master of Ceremonies and
Grand Procurator. He will endure in the communities he
loved most, because they loved him. His home in Pelham,
NY saw him serve as president of his graduating high
school class. Camp Dudley, his summer camp since a young
age and where he spent his last moments, came to rely
on John’s inspiration and humor, whether in the chapel or
around the campgrounds. Davidson College, a place which
he thrived in and profoundly impacted, still feels his legacy
today in student government, leadership development,
and perhaps most importantly, in the social fabric of the
30 The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma • Summer 2012
school. It is this legacy the Scholarship seeks to celebrate.
Immediately following John’s passing, the Delta Chapter
Brothers amassed in New York City for an initially somber
yet ultimately cathartic New Year’s Eve. What stemmed
from this gathering is a truly remarkable effort. Shedding
the lethargy of grief, the Brothers instead found vigor
and courage, revitalized by the tall task ahead of them.
In conjunction with John’s girlfriend and her close circle
of friends, they set about collecting hundreds of names
and drafting letters. Brothers’ uncles, aunts, cousins, and
grandparents were all submitted as contacts and potential
donors. Upcoming graduation presents for the seniors
converted to future pledges. Teachers and administration
at Davidson who interacted with John pledged donations.
Pelham residents sent their support south. In a matter of
weeks the distant goal of $100,000 rapidly grew closer. As
graduation neared, however, the figure remained elusive.
That is until 45 students, a mix of Brothers and Class of
2011 students, decided to definitively usher in the Scholarship
with pledges of $1,000 over the next five years. The
John Frankel Memorial Scholarship was officially endowed.
Yet the drive for donations never once muddled
the true reason for the Scholarship: to ensure John’s life

Brothers have raised over $110,000 in cash and have secured $55,000
in future pledges to endow the John Frankel Memorial Scholarship
extended far past that late December night. Future generations
of students deserved to feel John’s élan and his utterly
unique brand of warm sarcasm. With this in mind the Delta
Chapter founded not one, but two annual charity events,
each one remembering a different aspect of his life. FrankelFest,
a kickball tournament created with his girlfriend’s
eating house, commemorates his love for Friday afternoon
kickball with the fraternity. A warm April Saturday provided
the backdrop for the first annual tournament that attracted
students from all corners of Davidson, a testament to John’s
disdain for insularity on campus. Tireless planning yielded a
seamless day, one that closed with a moving award ceremony
and the presentation of the Frankel Cup. The event
raised over $2,100.
The second event came this fall. As their own, intimate
homage to John’s revered spirit, the Delta Chapter held
the first annual Frankel Invitational, a golf tournament on
Davidson’s three-hole course. Every Fraternity formal would
find John sneaking off in the early morning with three or
four Brothers to snag a round of golf. Returning to find
everyone still asleep, he’d remark, “par for the course.”
To honor his love for the links, the Brothers signed up and
caddied for over 65 students on a brisk November Saturday,
passing John’s legacy on to the new class of freshman while
reminiscing with those seniors and juniors who knew him
best. Replete with raffles, mini-golf, and chipping contests,
the all-day event offered a fitting tribute to a Brother who
loved all activities, all while raising over $1,300.
The Scholarship now totals $165,000, half of which
comes from a handful of donors, and the other from over
250 individual donations. The size and speed of the effort
is unprecedented on Davidson’s campus. At the one year
anniversary of John’s passing, the magnitude of the accomplishment
seems only fitting for a Brother who was so
integral to the fraternity.
Looking towards the future, new opportunities will
arise. Each new class of Delta Chapter Brothers will learn
about John’s legacy and will carry on his memory. In the
words of a 2011 graduate, “At Davidson, John was known
for his leadership and his ability to do seemingly everything
with an effortless smile and carefree optimism. Despite
the hectic pace of Davidson life, there was always time for
a late-night milkshake run, philosophical ramblings, or a
friend in need.” With the help of his family, friends, and the
Delta Chapter of Kappa Sigma, John Frankel will endure.
Lawyers Against Hunger Spring Event Huge Success
WGP Hugh M. Robert helps distribute food to needy families in the Tulsa, OK area during the inaugural “Celebrate Spring” event.
Lawyers Against Hunger raised funds for its first “Celebrate
Spring” event and were able to hand out over 250
boxes of food and a ham to Tulsa area families on April
3, 2012. The Celebrate Spring event was done in April to
coincide with a number of holidays that are in April and
May. Partnering with the Eastern Oklahoma Food Bank,
the combination of a ham and a pantry box was designed
to help feed a family for about a week.
This is a new project for Lawyers Against Hunger as
we “celebrate spring,” Worthy Grand Procurator, Hugh M.
Robert (Epsilon-Mu, Tulsa, ‘95), and one of the co-founders
said. “Lawyers Against Hunger is looking for new ways
to feed the hungry in our state, more than just once per
year. We hope doing a spring event will someday be as
big as our Thanksgiving event.” We received generous
support from the legal community across the nation
Tulsa again partnered with Iron Gate Ministries, a
Tulsa soup kitchen to identify and screen participants of
the event. Connie Cronley, Iron Gate executive director,
said the spring selections were focused on getting food to
families. Recipients in the spring drive were from veterans
groups; Day Spring Villa; Emergency Infant Services;
Youth Services of Tulsa; Veterans Administration; Veterans
Administration Drug Court Tulsa Mental Health
Association and Indian Health Care, Cronley said.
The ultimate goal is to continually be raising funds to
help feed hunger Oklahomans year round through large
32 The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma • Summer 2012
events such as these and also providing grants when
matching grants come available to food banks and organizations
like Iron Gate.
“We are unique in fundraising because any monies
raised in Tulsa stay in Tulsa,” Robert said. That also applies
to campaigns in Oklahoma City and Norman. To this end,
Lawyers Against Hunger partnered with Iron Gate Ministries,
Eastern Oklahoma Food Bank, and Emergency Infant
Services to launch a campaign entitled “Live Local, Give Local”
where they will empower donors to connect with local
charities with the express purpose of addressing hunger.
Lawyers Against Hunger is a unique opportunity for
Lawyers to give back to our communities and help address
a real problem in our community. As George H.W. Bush said
in his inauguration, “we are not the sum of our possessions,
they are not the measure of our lives, in our hearts
we know what matters, we cannot hope only to leave our
children a bigger car, or a bigger bank account. We must
hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal
friend, a loving parent, a citizen that leaves his home, his
neighborhood and his town better than he found it.” I
believe that as advocates, we share the same fundamental
belief and understanding that we are here for a purpose
and that purpose is to positively affect somebody’s life that
we may never have the opportunity to meet.
Clockwise from top left: The Kings of the Compound, Brothers Scott A. Blake (’77), Eric Troy Nicolaisen (’77) and Mark A. Anderson (’77);
Located in the UCLA Fan Zone, the Delta-Nu Tailgate Compound attracts a lot of attention.; Kappa Sigma undergraduates and alumni
getting to know each other.
Nothing quite defines college football as well as an awesome
tailgate, and the alumni of the Delta-Nu Chapter
know a thing or two about putting on an awesome tailgate…
they’ve been doing it consistently for over 20 years.
Every game day at the Rose Bowl is an all day affair.
Set-up, orchestrated by Brothers Scott A. Blake (’77), Eric
Troy Nicolaisen (’77), and Mark A. Anderson (’77), and
accompanied, among others, by recent graduates Brothers
Robert B. Paul (’10) and Noah Rooney (’10), begins promptly
at 6 AM, oftentimes before the sun has melted the frost
off the lawn (yes, sometimes even in sun-burnt Pasadena it
gets so cold that the men need to don sweaters).
There are no cars present at what the Chapter refers
to as the Kappa Sigma Compound, which is instead made
up of a several adjacent canopy tents, essentially creating
an outdoor living room that leaves all passers-by looking
jealous. Since the Chapter is currently without a House,
the compound, located in the heart of the exclusive Bruin
Alumni section of the tailgate grounds, has served as a
sort of “makeshift House” for the Chapter. It’s a place for
Brothers to come together, discuss and consult, socialize
and enjoy each other’s company, and, for some, to relish
the memories of the bygone undergraduate years.
The Delta-Nu tailgate at the Rose Bowl is unique in
that it is the only Greek tent in the alumni section and
the pomp and circumstance with which Delta-Nu observes
this common pregame ritual is an integral part of
our recruiting. The event showcases the community and
brotherhood that exists within the Chapter, as well as the
fact that the Brothers remain in contact and have good relations
with our alumni… a notion that reflects well on the
character of our men, both undergraduates and alumni.
While the lack of a Chapter house does impose an
immediate hardship both on maintaining a fraternal
atmosphere among the Brothers as well as attracting new
pledges, having the best Rose Bowl tailgate, which always
features a visit from Joe and Josie Bruin, as well as front
row performances by the Alumni Marching Band and
ALUMNI UPDATES
Epsilon-Mu (Tulsa)
Lawyers Against Hunger distributed Turkeys and pantry
boxes to over 2,000 families at the end of 2011. There
were 1,000 turkeys given out in Oklahoma City, 500 in Norman
and 500 turkeys along with a pantry box in Tulsa.
In 2011 Lawyers Against Hunger raised over $60,000
to purchase Thanksgiving meals for those in need. Lawyers
Against Hunger partnered with the Eastern Oklahoma
Food Bank and Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to
purchase the food which was handed out. The event had
over 50 volunteers from law firms in the Tulsa area and
law students from the University of Tulsa College of Law.
This year, Lawyers Against Hunger had a competition
between the cities of Tulsa, Oklahoma City and
Norman to see which group of attorneys could raise the
most money. It came down to the wire and Tulsa narrowly
beat Oklahoma City with Norman trailing in at
third place. “There are no losers in this competition, only
winners from each community where we raised funds to
help feed the hungry” said WGP Hugh M. Robert (’95),
attorney at Sherwood and McCormick and co-founder of
Lawyers Against Hunger. “All funds raised by lawyers in
the respective competition cities are staying in those cities.
We partnered with Iron Gate to help identify those in
need and include many deserving groups such as Emergency
Infant Services, Veterans groups, Youth Services,
and many more,” says Robert. He went on to describe
“one of the many reasons why we had such a great
response from Lawyers and many other groups is that we
all recognized the significant need after seeing Oklahoma
ranked as the fifth hungriest state in the country with
many of the hungry being children.”
Lawyers Against Hunger had several other local businesses
step up and help this year such as Arnie’s Bar and
McNellie’s who provided hot-dogs and refreshments for
those who were standing in line waiting to receive their
Thanksgiving meals. Additionally, there was music and
entertainment for children which began at 11:00 AM.
Each turkey could feed 10 - 11 people and the pantry box
was designed to supplement a family of 4 for an entire
week. This is the third year lawyers have raised money
to help provide Thanksgiving meals and the number of
families fed has more than doubled each year.
Summer 2012 • The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma 41
…Continuing the Legacy.

The Caduceus is your magazine, and we work hard to produce a high quality publication,
but we need your help. Here are some guidelines and tips for submitting articles and photos
that will assure that we produce a professional, top notch magazine every time.
Article Submissions (Chapter News, Alumni Updates and Articles)
We work within very specific and limited space when producing The Caduceus, so it helps if your submissions fall
within certain parameters. We understand that sometimes you’ve got a lot to say, but in general, we ask you to limit
your submissions to around 250 words or less (that’s around 3-4 concise paragraphs). If you need to write more,
then please do… understanding that we may have to edit some content for space.
• Always write in third person (i.e. “the chapter” instead of “we”) when possible.
• Include the initiation year of Brothers when using their names (i.e. “Brother Stephen A. Jackson (‘72)”)
• Please include captions with any photos that you submit.
Photo Requirements
When submitting photos for inclusion in The Caduceus (for Chapter News, Alumni Updates or feature articles,
please submit the highest quality available. If your photos are of insufficient quality, they may not be used.
• Avoid having alcohol in any photos, especially cans and bottles.
• When taking outdoor photos, avoid shooting into the sun.
• Use a flash indoors. Dark photos tend to be grainy and blurry.
• Set your camera or smart phone quality to the largest size with least compression.
• For best results, always send image files that are at least 850kb (compressed).
• Take more than one photo. Sometimes the first one is not the best.
What about the resolution?
Image resolution is a tricky thing to understands. The chart below has some basic guideline specs, assuming
that most cameras produce images that are at 72 dpi in the camera’s native file format/default settings.
For Chapter News or Alumni Updates
(Assuming photo resolution is 72dpi and in RGB mode)
Minimum = 800 x 600 pixels (or similar ratio)
Uncompressed JPEG or TIFF of around 1.5mb;
Maximum Quality JPEG of around 530kb
Preferred = 1024 x 768 pixels (or similar ratio)
Uncompressed JPEG or TIFF of around 2.3mb;
Maximum Quality JPEG of around 850kb
WHY IS ALL OF THIS
SO IMPORTANT?
We want The Caduceus to look the
best it possibly can. Photo quality is
very important, as is an understanding
of what makes a good photo. At
right, there are three photos of various
resolution, file type and quality
to demonstrate the difference.
a little over $700,000 in previous years, and this year, the
Brothers are excited to say they helped contribute to that
astonishing number by raising another $52,500!
The Chapter decided to support three charities for
this year’s event. First, they wanted to support the Military
Heroes Campaign with a donation to The Fisher House Foundation.
Second, they wanted to make a contribution to John
Clark Packer (’01), a 2005 alumnus of Mississippi State University
and Chapter member. He was diagnosed with cystic
fibrosis and continues to battle this terrible disease. Lastly,
Delta-Chi raised money for the Jerious Norwood Foundation,
which hosts various football camps and contributes to other
charities for terminally ill and underprivileged children.
Charity Classic Chairman, Brother Bradley S. Hollinger
(’08), organized the event and led a team to help him execute
the plans. The team was responsible for organizing the
BBQ dinner that Delta-Chi hosted to help raise money. They
also helped develop an ad-packet that was distributed at
the event. Each member of Delta-Chi was asked to sell three
hundred dollars of ads to be placed in the packet.
The team was also responsible for publicizing the event.
They used social media, press releases in newspapers, posters,
and t-shirts to help spread the word about the event.
With the help of Twitter and Facebook, the Brothers were
able to inform the community and campus about the event.
They also developed a poster, and the same picture on the
poster was also on the back of the t-shirts. The posters were
distributed around campus and to local businesses to help
spread the word. The t-shirts were also a big success, with
many sororities encouraging their members to buy t-shirts
to help support the event.
Overall, the Charity Classic week and event was a
tremendous success. With much help from the Dean of
Students office, Greek Life office, Starkville High School,
precious charity classic Chairmen, supporting corporate
businesses, and alumni, the men used every resource they
could find to help promote the event and make it successful.
Delta-Chi is so proud of the members and the hard work
and effort they put in to making the event so memorable
this year. Without their help working the game, working the
Charity Classic Dinner, putting up posters, the football team
going to practice and preparing for the game, the incredible
result of this A Greater Cause service event would not have
had the same outcome.
Alpha-Nu (Wofford College)
Left to right pictured are Brothers Benjamin D. Bramhall (’11),
Josh A. Whitney (’09) (Grand Procurator), W. Bennett Whitehouse
(’09) (Grand Master of Ceremonies), Mackenzie B. “Mack”
Walker (’10) (Grand Master), Robert E. James (’10), and Samuel
J. Quave (’08) during their recent trip to Vietnam and Cambodia.
Over the January term, six brothers of the Alpha-Nu
Chapter, Ben Bramhall, Josh Whitney, Bennett Whitehouse,
Mack Walker, Robert James, and Sam Quave,
took part in a school sponsored trip to Vietnam and
Cambodia. The purpose of the trip was to educate the
students as to the history and traditions of the Vietnamese
and Cambodian peoples.
While overseas, the Brothers took part in multiple
philanthropic events, such as visiting a Friendship Village
in the city of Hanoi for Vietnamese affected by the long
term effects of Agent Orange used by combatants during
the Vietnam War. There are still thousands of orphans
left from the turmoil caused by the regime of the Khmer
Rouge and Paul Potts and the civil war that ensued
following their overthrow. The men took in a play put
on by the children living at an orphanage in downtown
Siem Reap, the capital of Cambodia. In addition to donations
made to the orphanage, the Brothers got to spend
some quality time interacting with the kids and getting
to know them a little better.
The Brothers left Vietnam with a renewed respect for
what they and many others have come to take for granted
living in the United States. The experience in Vietnam
and Cambodia not only made the students better people
but also better Brothers for Alpha-Nu.
Alpha-Psi (University of Nebraska-Lincoln)
The Alpha-Psi Chapter has successfully put on a
new type of philanthropy at the University of Nebraska
Lincoln. Alpha-Psi set out to break the philanthropy mold
every fraternity and sorority abide by. Thus the “Concert
for the Cure” was created. The event was held at a local
venue and hosted a concert of up and coming artist XV.
The philanthropy was sold out and turned out to be
a huge success, raising over $2,000 for the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society. Members also attended the “Light
the Night Walk” to show support to families of people
with Leukemia. Due to its success the concert will become
an annual event. If you are an alumni please send
your latest contact information to: AlumniRelations@kappasigmaunl.org
on upcoming events.
Beta (University of Alabama)
During the recent Student Government Association
(SGA) banquet Brother Austin Gaddis (’09) received the
Senate Staff Member of the Year Award. Austin served
the Senate as the Communication specialist working
directly with the Speaker of the Senate. Austin is the Immediate
Past Grand Master at Beta. Brother Mark David
Kennedy (’08) received the highest SGA Award - The
John H. Pearson Award. Mark David has just completed
his term as SGA Vice President for Financial Affairs. He
recently completed his term as ODK (Senior Leadership
Honor Society) President. Additionally Mark David served
Beta as GMC during his junior year. Brother Kennedy
is the second Beta Brother to receive this award. The
previous winner was former GM and House Corporation
member, Christopher C. Lambert (’04). Additionally
Brothers Andrew J. Mills IV (’09) and Austin Gaddis were
both tapped into Mortar Board, a national honor society
based on leadership, scholarship, and service.
Beta-Beta (University of Richmond)
The Chapter recently held a raffle that raised more
than $650 for the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization
that aims to honor and empower returned service
members in various ways, including organizing rehabilitative
retreats and employment assistance. Beta-Beta has
seven ROTC members in the Chapter, therefore they have
made an effort to expand their involvement with the
Military Heroes Campaign through fundraising events like
this raffle, where attendees were charged a $5 entrance
fee for two raffle tickets and a dinner.
The raffle winner was able to choose one Kappa Sigma
Brother to chauffeur him or her around Richmond for
a night. “The focus on the military has strengthened our
brotherhood,” said Brother Timothy J. Peters (’09), philanthropy
chairman. “It shows that we truly understand
what our ROTC members are doing and that we support
their service and sacrifice.” Beta-Beta has the greatest
number of Reserve Officers’ Training Corps members of
any Greek organization on Richmond’s campus.
Chi-Omega (University of South Carolina)
The Chi-Omega Chapter enjoyed a school
year of vast improvement. During the fall semester, Chi-
Omega was proud to initiate 29 new brothers. Chi-Omega
also took its first winter pledge class in recent memory
adding 6 brothers, and finishing up with a spring pledge
class of 17 initiated in April giving Chi-Omega a total of 52
new members, making it the biggest rush in the Chapter’s
last decade.
Also this past April, Chi-Omega attained in a single day
81 level one Ritual Proficiency Certificates and 18 Level
Two Ritual Proficiency Certificates, while newly elected
Grand Master of Ceremonies Brother Mr. Andrew L. Chandler
(’10)attained three levels of ritual proficiency. This
record-shattering day was a testament to the dedication
of the Chi Omega Chapter, which improved Chi-Omega’s
overall Chapter ritual proficiency from 17% to over 80%.
During February, Chi-Omega hosted the South Carolina
District Conclave. Worthy Grand Procurator Hugh M.
Robert (Epsilon-Mu, Tulsa, ’95) was also in attendance,
and shared lessons on zeal and humility with the assembled
Chapters. District Grand Master Michael J. Uhrinek
(Xi-Phi, USC-Upstate, ’03) also shared some recruitment
strategies that the Chapters hoped to institute next year.
Chi-Omega was also active philanthropically. The
Brothers raised $10,855 for Military Heroes in their
Semi-Annual Chicken Pie Drop. Chi-Omega also pledged
to become one of Jackson’s Chapters, the highest level of
commitment on a nationally philanthropic level.
In addition to these Chapter improvements, Chi-
Omega saw its leaders excel at even greater levels. Grand
Master Thomas N. “Tom” Gonzalez (’09) earned the
Dean’s Award for Undergraduate Achievement, a prestigious
award only given out to 5 seniors every year. While
The Brothers recently had 18 seniors graduate, most of
whom have been members for all four college years.
The weekend before exams, several of the seniors took
a trip to Cleveland, MS to visit and meet with David M.
“Boo” Ferriss (’40) who is a baseball legend in the state
of Mississippi. Boo is not only an alumnus but also a
Red Sox Hall of Famer. This was a great way for the
seniors to go out.
Delta-Lambda (Montana State University)
The Brothers of Delta-Lambda at Montana State University
are making some huge changes and improvements.
The Chapter was placed in the top 20 for improving
recruitment. The Chapter had 18 new initiates in the fall.
The Brothers remodeled the front room, built a new patio
out back, and have plans in the works to remodel the
kitchen this summer. They have done a lot of community
service this year compared to previous years. Stop by
the house this fall and check out the improvements as
football season is just around the corner!

Delta-Sigma (University of Utah)
The Delta-Sigma Chapter initiated 15 new
members for the fall semester. The men raised approximately
$500 selling t-shirts and carving pumpkins for the
Primary Children’s Hospital of Salt Lake City. In the spring
the Brothers had a concert to raise money for Military
Heroes, in support of the Fisher Foundation’s Wounded
Warrior project. The Chapter is currently working on
getting 80% ritual proficiency. The Chapter got most
improved GPA on campus. Delta-Sigma partnered up
with Alpha Chi Omega and raised over $12,000 for NAMI
(National Alliance on Mental Illness). Overall the Delta-
Sigma Chapter is working hard and going step by step to
become the best Fraternity on campus.
Delta-Xi (University of Mississippi)
Delta-Xi continues its tradition of leadership on campus.
Brother Matthew T. Kiefer (’11) was recently elected
Attorney General for the Ole Miss Student Body.
Epsilon-Tau (California State University-Fresno)
In the fall semester Epsilon-Tau marked yet another
semester with the highest number of pledges amongst
the other fraternities on campus. The Chapter initiated
members 14 new brothers. The new members also
included the Chapter’s first legacy, Brother Christopher R.
Rowe (’11) whose father was a Kappa Sigma at San Diego
State University in 1975. This was a special and proud
moment for Brother Rowe and his father, as well as the
brothers involved in the initiation.
In the community, the brothers of Epsilon-Tau have
been actively involved. The Chapter has participated
in the Making Strides breast cancer walk. The Brothers
jumped out of bed at 6am and threw on their running
shoes to help set-up for and participate in the breast
cancer walk. Hundreds of people from the community
attended and thousands of dollars were raised to help
find a cure for breast cancer.
The Brothers of the Gamma-Pi Chapter at MIT participated as an installation team for the Sigma-Alpha Chapter at Hartford, Connecticut.
The Gamma-Pi Brothers received a certificate of appreciation for their efforts.
Gamma-Pi (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
On the weekend of Saturday, March 10th, 16
brothers of Gamma-Pi, along with brothers of Xi-
Beta Chapter from Northeastern University and the
Omicron-Epsilon Chapter of Adelphi University, came
together in Hartford, Connecticut for the chartering an
d installation of the Sigma-Alpha Chapter.
Gamma-Pi sent down two teams of eight brothers
to assist in the task of initiating the new Kappa Sigmas.
Aside from a short lunch break, the brothers worked for
several hours straight to ensure all members of the new
Sigma-Alpha Chapter were successfully initiated.
After the initiation was over, the brothers from all
four Chapters came together for a banquet to celebrate
the day’s events. In attendance were New England
District Grand Master Thomas J. Kelly (Xi-Beta, Northeastern,
’03), Ritualist James H. S. Levine (Xi-Lambda,
Delaware, ’97), and Worthy Grand Master S. Christian
Nascimento (Kappa-Eta, Widener, ’93).
Gamma-Pi was honored to be a part of the installation
of a new Chapter, and is excited to have made new
friends and Brothers from the Sigma-Alpha Chapter.
CHAPTER NEWS & EVENTS
Gamma-Theta (University of Idaho)
The Gamma-Theta Chapter added
17 pledges to the house to start the year
off. In intramurals, the house teams were
able to progress to the semifinals in football
and have done very well in the playoffs for
many other sports, such as soccer, volleyball,
and whiffle ball. This year Gamma-
Theta also participated in the annual
haunted barn community service. Brothers
and pledges dressed up in costumes and
helped run the local haunted trail and barn.
The haunted barn helped the Chapter gain
over one hundred hours of community
service. We have also participated in many
of the sorority philanthropies, such as Alpha
Gamma Delta’s annual Dodge Ball Slam.
The Chapter has been focusing on its
grades, having above a 3.0 at midterms, as well as furthering
our number of ritually proficient members. Brothers have
made great strides with University and sorority relations
on campus, getting involved in projects, such as a new
recycling program. Pledges and brothers have also grown
closer through a number of brotherhood events including
a monthly dinner at a local restaurant. Being close to
another Chapter has also helped build brother relations, as
many events have taken place involving brothers from the
Gamma-Mu Chapter located at Washington State University.
Gamma-Lambda (Iowa State University)
Gamma-Lambda recruited eight pledges for the
first pledge class of the fall semester. The Chapter maintained
its momentum and recruited a second pledge class
of 6 pledges for the fall, to bring the total pledges to 14.
This growth represents an increase in membership of over
100% since the end of the last school year.
In the fall, Brothers and pledges played intramural
broomball. Broomball is played on ice without skates
using paddles and a small ball. This was a great brotherhood
experience for everyone involved. Gamma-Lambda
participated in Blue Sky Day, a 5K run to raise money
for underprivileged children in Iowa. The Chapter also
organized “Klothes for Kids,” a clothing drive event for
underprivileged children.
Gamma-Mu (Washington State University)
The past fall Gamma-Mu doubled their recruitment
numbers by pledging 20 men; the largest number
that they have recruited in many years. Gamma-Mu has
been working on various community service projects
48 The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma • Summer 2012
Above: The Gamma-Theta Chapter has had a very successful year.
The Brothers take a moment to pose for a photo
The Gamma-Theta Chapter also had a great dad’s
weekend, celebrating with our dads and having a barbeque
in addition to many other events. Gamma-Theta is
also working on sending out our alumni newsletter which
is made twice a year to improve relations further with
alumni and keep them involved in house happenings.
and has placed a main priority on Ritual Proficiency and
achieving a F.A.C.E Award in the near future. In addition,
the men have made a commitment to renovating the
Chapter house, starting with painting the interior and
exterior. This past semester, the Chapter spent a lot of
time and effort into raising money for The Military Heroes
Campaign. By going door-to-door in both Pullman and
Moscow, Gamma-Mu has raised over $1,500 so far.
Gamma-Tau (University of Colorado Boulder)
Overall, this was a very successful semester in athletics,
fellowship, and service. Gamma-Tau held its inaugural
Trap Shoot where twelve fraternity teams competed.
Kappa Sigma took home the trophy and raised over $2,000
dollars for the Fisher House Foundation. Gamma-Tau also
won Alpha Chi Omega’s Greek Grand Slam and took Third
in Greek Week. Spring recruitment went very well with 16
out of 17 bids accepted. To top it off, a team of six, led by
Brother David R. “Randy” Weeks (’73), was put together
for the American Lung Association’s Stair Climb in Denver
and raised over $5,000 dollars in Kappa Sigma’s name.

Gamma-Upsilon (Rutgers State Univ. of New Jersey)
College students would probably rank among the
highest on the list of people least likely to be awake at
7am on a Sunday. However, this was not the case for the
brothers of the Gamma-Upsilon Chapter of the Kappa
Sigma Fraternity, at Rutgers, who woke up before sunrise
to help set up and support the Walk for Diane.
The Walk for Diane is an annual event that raises
money for the Amy Foundation, a local organization
that raises money to provide free mammograms for less
fortunate women who cannot afford them. This is all in
an effort to raise breast cancer awareness and to provide
early detection for women to help the fight against
breast cancer.
Brother John K. Goodwin (Gamma-Beta Prime, Millikin,
’76) lost his wife, Diane, to breast cancer. Additionally,
there are some other brothers in the Chapter that
have been affected by breast
cancer. Brother Goodwin is
himself an alumnus of Kappa
Sigma. The Chapter proved that
brotherhood does not stop at
the end of Rutgers campus.
Waking up bright and early
is an understatement, considering
the brothers woke up before
the sun was even up. They
helped set up for the event and
helped themselves to breakfast.
Top: Brothers awake early to raise
awareness and raise money for
breast cancer. Right: Brothers supporting
the Walk for Diane.
When all the signs were in place, tables laid out,
and balloons inflated, the brothers’ contribution
continued. They put on their Walk for Diane shirts and
walked the three mile walk around Buccleuch Park in
New Brunswick, NJ.
Last year when Goodwin came, he approached the
Chapter asking for help with the Walk for Diane, and
the brothers instantly jumped on the opportunity. The
brothers were able to raise $500 for the cause, which
the Amy Foundation was very grateful for.
The Brothers set out to meet the previous amount,
but little did they know, they would surpass that amount
in about a month. After the first week of October, the
Brothers had already raised $3,000, but they were not
done yet. By the time the walk came, they had not only
met their goal, but raised ten times the amount.
CHAPTER NEWS & EVENTS
Kappa-Alpha (University of Nevada-Las Vegas)
During the semester the Chapter put on two events to
bolster, not only philanthropic goals, but to set precedence
throughout the University. The main event is BootCamp.
BootCamp is an annual philanthropy (four years running)
within the Chapter, which raised eight thousand dollars for
the Military Heroes Campaign. The event was accompanied
by a Red Cross blood donations and Locks for Love. The
donations to both of those were respectfully, 41 units of
blood and enough hair to fashion into nine wigs.
The next big event the Kappa-Alpha Chapter hosted
was a fundraiser. The fundraiser elected was a “Fight
Night” of sorts with a portion of the proceeds going to
Austin Richard York, a two year old child born with heart
trouble. He has undergone three heart surgeries in his two
years of life and the family was struggling with the medical
costs. Out of fight night Kappa-Alpha raised two thousand
and three hundred dollars in ticket sales. A spectator
during this event was an assistant to the boxer Floyd
Mayweather Jr., who after hearing the story of Austin York
offered to cover the medical expenses for this young child.
Overall the Chapter logged over 28,000 hours in
philanthropies and helped raise $130,000 for A Greater
Cause. Kappa-Alpha continues to be a presence at the University
of Nevada Las Vegas holding the largest philanthropy
on campus and exceeding expectations every semester.
Kappa-Chi (College of Charleston)
This school year has been a very successful one
for the Kappa-Chi Chapter. Between the two semesters
there were 21 total initiates, which is a record high for
the past several years. The Chapter, along with the PIKE
Chapter at the College of Charleston, held a beach volleyball
tournament at Folly Beach to raise money for Charleston
Waterkeeper. The joint efforts of the two fraternities
helped to raise around $700, which will aid the organization
in the protection of the Charleston waterways from
pollution. In total, $1,504 was raised by Kappa-Chi for various
charities this semester, and 172.5 service hours were
logged between the members. Brother Nicholas R. Hays
(’10) is leaving this summer to serve on a tour in Afghanistan,
and to represent Kappa Sigma at its finest. Kappa-Chi
wishes him the best of luck and looks forward to his return.
5th, 2011 which was held in conjunction with the fall
SEC Meeting held in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Kappa-Pi (University of Central Oklahoma)
Kappa-Pi held its Inaugural Kappa Sigma Boxer Run for Breast
Cancer, benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Kappa-Pi Chapter has had an amazing
year so far. The Chapter recently initiated 20 new
members into our brotherhood in the fall while pledging
5 new guys in the spring, the second highest total on
campus! The primary focus for the spring semester was
to raise money for our 22nd Annual Bathtub Push in
April, in which all proceeds went to the Military Heroes
Campaign and the Veteran’s Families United Foundation.
It is exciting to see what the new semester holds for
Kappa-Pi, as every Chapter goal in recruitment, ritual,
and academics have been shattered. This is a trend that
is fully expected to continue within the coming months.
In the fall the Chapter kicked off its Inaugural Kappa
Sigma Boxer Run for Breast Cancer. The event generated
$365 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and helped to
build momentum for rush.

Kappa-Rho Colony (Boise State University)
The Kappa-Rho Colony will be sending in its petition
to charter in the coming days. The members raised
over $1,100 at commencement last semester from the
biannual rose sale. The Brothers and pledges alike are in
good spirits about the upcoming semester and regaining
their charter. The Colony is proud of Brother Jeffrey M.
The Brothers of Lambda enjoyed a very
bountiful year that saw a second place finish in All Sing
and a third place finish in Carnicus as Brother Ian M.
Salter (’08) won best male actor for the fourth year in a
row. Furthermore, Lambda, along with the lovely ladies
of Chi Omega, finished third in the University of
Tennessee’s Greek Week. During Greek Week, Brothers
helped to build and construct a home for a single
mother through Habitat for Humanity.
Rush was a huge success in Knoxville as 35 new brothers
were initiated in the fall and 6 more were initiated this
spring. The brothers have done a great job of focusing on
getting the best and brightest group of guys on campus.
Several brothers excelled academically and in other
campus organizations this year. I. Cason Hewgley IV (’09)
was chosen to be a part of Mortar Board Honor Society and
also serves as Chaplain on IFC. Cason’s younger brother, W.
Preston Hewgley (’11), and Brother Adam G. Prosise (’10)
also were selected to serve on UT’s Judicial Board. As a unit,
Lambda, for the fourth straight year, won the Greek Cup
which signifies the overall Greek intramural champions.
Lambda would also like to personally thank Worthy
Grand Master of Ceremonies Derek L. Marchman for being
the keynote speaker at our Founder’s Day Banquet.
The brothers were honored to have him be there as they
celebrated their brotherhood.
Lambda-Lambda (Elon University)
The Brothers recently participated in a philanthropy
event called “Movember” in which the entire Chapter
grew facial hair and mustaches to raise money for the
Prostate Cancer Foundation and the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
The Chapter passed their annual philanthropy
goal of $8,000 and raised $20,900 during the month of
November, and finished the event which ended a few
days into December with $21,100. It turned out to be the
largest student run philanthropy event in Elon’s Greek
Life history. The “Movember” event as a whole globally
raised over $108 million for these foundations. Lambda-
Lambda ended up ranking #38 for teams raising money
in the US, behind corporations such as Morgan Stanley,
Deutsche Bank, and Google. Coverage of the success of
this philanthropy appeared in the student website and
the student newspaper at Elon, as well as the neighboring
city’s Burlington Time News.
Mu-Gamma (Texas A&M University)
The Mu-Gamma Chapter is pleased to announce
the most successful spring rush in the Chapter’s
thirty year history. The Chapter is very excited to have
hosted the Lone Star Conclave which was held in March
at the George Bush Presidential Library.
The Chapter also hosted a very successful fall philanthropy,
and was able to raise $2,500 for a local organization
called “CARPOOL.” CARPOOL offers sober rides to all
university students. In the past few years, Mu-Gamma
has come a long way and the Brothers are striving to
continue on their success.
CHAPTER NEWS & EVENTS
Lambda-Tau (Baylor University)
The Brothers of Lambda-Tau had a very successful
academic year in many aspects throughout their campus
at Baylor University. Recently, the Chapter welcomed 29
new members. During the spring semester, Kappa Sigma
paired up with Kappa Kappa Gamma to put on a 1st place
performance titled “Bienvenue a la Masquerade” in the
All-University SING production which is the largest off-
Broadway performance in the United States. Kappa Sigma
currently stands in 1st place in intramural points. Exciting
news continued for the Chapter this year with the return
of current active member and Marine soldier Josiah Johns
who has recently returned home from an eight-month
tenure in Afghanistan. Lambda-Tau is looking forward to
building this success in the years to come.
CHAPTER NEWS & EVENTS
Mu-Omega (Southeastern Louisiana University)
Mu-Omega recently hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament
with half-court rules called Hoops for Troops at the
Pennington Student Activity Center. The purpose of the
event was to raise money and awareness for the Military
Heroes Campaign and Fisher House.
Nu-Omicron (The University of Texas at Dallas)
During the 2011-2012 school year the Nu-Omicron
Chapter has risen to over 50 brothers. Of those Brothers,
91% are ritually proficient and the Chapter is striving to
reach 100% proficiency by the start of the next school year.
Nu-Omicron recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary
with a Formal/Reunion that included a number of the
Chapter’s alumni and the Chapter’s first initiate. The Chapter
raised over $1000 for the Military Heroes Campaign
through its traditional Box-A-Thon event and other various
philanthropic events. Nu-Omicron recently earned top GPA
honors among all Chapters in the Interfraternity Council.
Nu-Omicron will continue to grow during the 2012-2013
academic year as it continues to bring in quality men and
make the next 20 years just as successful.
in the Tough Mudder Challenge to raise money.
On October 22, 2011, several undergraduates and
alumni from the Nu-Sigma Chapter completed the Mid-
Atlantic Tough Mudder Challenge. The men of Kappa Sigma
raised over $2,000 dollars benefitting the Wounded Warrior
Project, which raises over $3-million annually from these
challenges. The 10.5 mile obstacle course was designed by
Ex-British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina,
mental grit and camaraderie. Simply completing a Tough
Mudder is a badge of honor. Over 14,000 competitors
entered the event and all Kappa Sigmas finished in the top
20% of their heat, an impressive domination of the gruesome
course! Obstacles included freezing water, choking
smoke, and 10,000 volts of electricity, log carries, tunnel
crawls and the mountain climb.
Omicron-Epsilon (Adelphi University)
The Chapter has recently participated in the Light the Night Walk
at the Philadelphia Art Museum with the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority
from Temple’s campus. The Chapter raised money for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
On Saturday, March 3rd 2012, 12 brothers of the
Nu-Upsilon (Winthrop University)
Caption: This year the Nu-Upsilon Chapter
had some of its most productive semesters in recent
memory. Rushing and community service were at the
forefront of Nu-Upsilon’s goals, which were met and
exceeded. Kappa Sigma is currently #1 on campus with
a total of 49 members. Even though 7 were initiated in
the Alpha Tau pledge class on March 30, 14 brothers
are graduating either in the spring or summer of 2012.
by Wyndham Worldwide in support of the Special
Olympics. Brothers Martin Garcia (’05), Matthew A. Salvato
(’05), Paul F. Ungaro (’06), James F. “Jimmy” Morris
(’09), Ryan T. Catterson (’08), Raymond M. Hughes (’10),
Neil B. Bisciello (’10), Christopher J. Grunert (’10), Daniel
M. “Danny” Sepulveda (’07), John-Carlos “JC” Ortiz (’07),
Matthew A. Chmielowiec (’08), and Richard A. DelGiudice
(’09) participated in this flag football tournament which
included teams from all around the Tri-State area.
Alumni and undergraduates joined forces and raised
a total of $2,600 in support of the Special Olympics in
order to get the chance to play on the home turf of the
Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. Despite a rough
start to the day, the Kappa Sigma team concluded with
a 3-2 overall record, getting bounced in the playoffs in a
close game to the eventual tournament winners.
The team was treated to free food and concessions,
access to the visiting team locker room, free Snow Bowl/
New York Giants apparel, a viewing of the Lombardi
Trophy as well as introductions to players from the New
York Giants such as Lawrence Tynes. Team Captain and
Alumnus JC Ortiz organized the event, one that will now
be an annual occurrence for the Chapter after a truly
memorable experience at the stadium.
In the fall 2012 semester, the rush goal of Nu-Upsilon
is 14. Community service has once again been the
centerpiece of Nu-Upsilon’s activity in the 2011-2012
academic year. Since August, Kappa Sigma’s Chapter
at Winthrop has worked about 15,600 hours of community
service in and around the Rock Hill, SC area. On
April 13, members of Nu-Upsilon raised over $1,000 for
Relay For Life that went to the MS Society. Nu-Upsilon’s
20-year anniversary is also coming up in 2013.
Omicron-Mu (California State University-Bakersfield)
The Assistance League of Bakersfield held its annual
Chez Noel home tour recently, and volunteer Dona
Chertok said it was another success. Dona also wanted to
thank members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity Omicron-
Mu Chapter at CSUB for lending their brawn to help set
up the group’s Chapter room to accommodate vendors.
“Some of these young men also staffed as docents at the
homes on the tour, and the ladies loved them!” she said.
Omicron-Phi (Washington College)
This spring, the Omicron-Phi Chapter was able
to initiate six new members. This semester’s biannual
Pancake Breakfast yielded over of $1,400, which was
divided equally between two philanthropies, the Military
Heroes Campaign and Prostate Cancer Research. During
Spring Break, three brothers embraced the notion of “A
Greater Cause” by participating in a Habitat for Humanity
project in Columbus, GA. Brothers have also participated
in such charity events as Relay for Life, raising $1074.63
for the ACS, and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.
This past semester, the Chapter has had brothers
who were inducted into Washington College’s Cater
Society of Junior Fellows and the Omicron Delta Kappa
Leadership Honor Society. Kappa Sigma is the most
represented Greek organization in these notable societies.
Omicron-Phi is also highly represented in many of the
academic honor societies including Psi Chi (Psychology),
Beta Beta Beta (Biology), Sigma Beta Delta (Business),
and Pi Sigma Alpha (Political Science).
Omicron-Phi has also taken great strides in leadership.
Several of the brothers are members of the Omicron Delta
Kappa Leadership Honor Society, as well as the Order of
Omega Greek leadership society. The Omicron-Phi Chapter
also holds several positions in the Student Government
Association including Financial Controller, class Presidents,
Vice Presidents, Treasurers and Senators.
The Brothers have also spread to many extracurricular
clubs and activities including Students in Free Enterprise,
the Cross-country Club, the club rugby team, the Trap and
Skeet club and many others. In fact, several new initiates
spearheaded the creation, and now lead, a men’s club
volleyball team. Motivated by these accomplishments, the
brothers of the Omicron-Phi Chapter have an exceedingly
positive outlook on the semester of fall of 2012.
Omicron-Psi (Bloomsburg University Of Pennsylvania)
This year the Chapter was able to grow to an undergraduate
membership of 48 men. Omicron-Psi has established
its first campus wide annual philanthropy event,
“Hawks for Heroes”. Though the first event was rained on,
“Hawks for Heroes” allowed the Chapter to raise $1500 for
the Fisher House Foundation. Omicron-Psi logged over 1600
community service hours this year which was three times
the amount of any other fraternity on campus. Omicron-
Psi has shattered their ritual goals this semester with over
100% first level, and over 20% second level certificates.
The Omicron-Psi Chapter is very excited to hopefully
accept their first F.A.C.E award ever this summer in New
Orleans. In addition, Omicron-Psi was proud to assist at
the re-installation of the Kappa-Eta Chapter at Widener
University. It was a great opportunity for the Chapter to
get inspired about the ritual and the overall success of
this Fraternity. The re-installation was also very special
because Ryan F. Cellini’s (’09) father, Francis J. Cellini
(’77), is a Kappa-Eta alumnus.
Omicron-Upsilon (Temple University)
The Omicron-Upsilon Chapter at Temple University is in
the process of renovating their brotherhood room. It is
the first of such renovations since moving into the house
on Broad Street three years ago. The old, wood paneled
room is being completely redone with new walls, ceiling,
and floors, including a built in display case for the Charter.
56 The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma • Summer 2012
The Chapter is creating a plaque which will include the
names of all current and alumni members who donate to
the project. It is just one of many steps solidifying Kappa
Sigma’s presence at Temple University.
Omicron-Zeta (University of Hawaii)
The brothers of the Omicron-Zeta Chapter have been
working hard on being the top Chapter in Area 5, especially
after winning the FACE award last summer. Brother
Remington X. Poulin (’07) was awarded the J. Henry
Nicols Scholarship-Leadership Award and Brother Isaac E.
Lipscomb (’10) received a national Scholarship-Leadership
award. With the spring semester at the University of
Hawaii at Manoa winding down, the Brothers are looking
forward to another great year and are already planning for
what hopes to be the greatest rush in recent years. Aloha.
Pi-Chi (Lake Erie College)
Pi-Chi Brothers celebrate their Greek Week victory after the Volleyball
match against the Gamma Phi Betas.
The Pi-Chi Chapter at Lake Erie College focused on
community service this semester with a heavier Greater
Cause schedule. On February 27, 2012, tragedy struck
near the campus of Lake Erie College. Chardon High
School lost three students due to a gunman in the school.
With direct ties to the shooting, the Pi-Chi Chapter made
arrangements for a three-day fundraiser to help the
victims’ families, raising nearly $1,000.
The brothers continued the tradition of working
Painesville’s Parks & Recreation Department’s annual Easter
Egg Hunt. Brothers braved the cold to place eggs and
help the children find the eggs safely. The Chapter gave
up some sleep to serve breakfast to a local school for
students with disabilities. Breakfast was served to about
100 students prior to their state standardized test. The
brothers have already planned to participate in local and
individual community service events over the summer.
Congratulations to Brother Matthew E. Swanson (’10), for
earning Pi-Chi’s first certificate of Ritual Proficiency.

Palouse/Montana District Conclave
Nearly 70 Brothers were in attendance for the Palouse/Montana District Conclave.
WGMC Derek L. Marchman (Lambda-Xi, Georgia College, ’85) speaks to a packed crowd.
The Palouse/Montana District held a very successful
and educational conclave on March 31st hosted by
Gamma-Theta at the University of Idaho. Almost 70 undergraduates
and volunteer alumni from Gamma-Theta
(University of Idaho), Gamma-Mu (Washington State
University), Delta-Lambda (Montana State University)
and Delta-Omicron (University of Montana) gathered for
a day of learning and education.
The day was highlighted by guest speaker Worthy
Grand Master of Ceremonies Derek L. Marchman. Brother
Marchman energized the Brothers and talked about
many areas the Chapters can be successful in and work
to make themselves and Kappa Sigma better. Volunteer
alumni in the district, like Jose F. Diaz (Delta-Omicron,
Montana, ’07) (Assistant District Grand Master–Champion
Quest), Kevin T. Molm (Delta-Omicron, Montana,
’07) (Alumnus Advisor - Delta-Omicron), Cameron K.
Knigge (Gamma-Theta, Idaho, ’05) (Assistant Alumnus
Advisor–Grand Scribe - Gamma-Theta) and Jonathan R.
Baker (Xi-Omega, Idaho State, ’04) (Alumnus Advisor -
Gamma-Mu) all helped during the day and conducted
breakout sessions. The men gathered for an amazing sitdown
dinner at the Chapter house and enjoyed fellowship
at the end of the day while watching the Final Four
that evening. It was a great weekend of Kappa Sigma and
generated lots of energy in the district.
Pi-Epsilon (University of Houston)
The Pi-Epsilon Chapter at the University of Houston
has continued to reach new heights since first arriving on
campus in 2008. Not only can Pi-Epsilon claim the title of
“Largest Fraternity on Campus”, but also holds member
involvement in every facet of campus life.
This spring, Pi-Epsilon held their 5th annual Softball
tournament, to raise money for the Military Heroes
Campaign. With Pi-Epsilon climbing to the top of the four
pillars, they will be carrying the momentum forward as
they aim to surpass the previous semester’s successes by
having the top recruiting class along with surpassing all
goals of philanthropy and community service.
Psi (University of Maine-Orono)
The Psi Chapter continued its rise to becoming
number one on campus at The University of Maine
this past fall. Fifteen new members were initiated and the
Chapter is now up to 45 brothers. The spring semester is
shaping up to be just as successful on the recruiting side,
and becoming number 1 on campus is the next step. In the
area of service the Chapter also had a good deal of success.
Brothers at the Kyle Lake Foundation golf tournament.
A food drive was run benefitting the Good Shepherd
Food Bank and over 1000 food items were collected from
the community as well as $420 dollars. The Chapter also
held its annual event called “Sausagefest” where the
Brothers served grilled food during the University’s Family
and Friends weekend to benefit the Military Heroes
Campaign’s Fisher House.
The Chapter is also hard at work on increasing relations
with alumni, as a successful Homecoming was held
this year. Psi is also moving forward with their housing
project and the men are exploring new ways to collect
funds to help them build a Chapter house on campus.
Rho-Phi (Utah Valley University)
The recently installed Rho-Phi Chapter at Utah Valley
University has been awarded the joy of being the first
Fraternity on campus and a Chapter at the largest public
school in District 45. Despite the pervasive stigma against
fraternities in highly conservative Utah Valley, Rho-Phi is
determined to further Jackson’s dream, and has realized
that there is no excuse not to do so at a school with a body
of 33,000. Not only have they set the goal of reaching 60
members in the next year, but they also intend on producing
at least one Master of the Ritual by the end of summer.
Rho-Phi intends to set an example to both the administration
and the student body of its Alma Mater of what
a good thing Kappa Sigma, and Greek Life in general, is,
and to bestow upon future generations of Utahans the
honor and privilege of becoming a part of the Order.
The enthusiasm and passion for the Order have most
definitely carried over from installation, and Rho-Phi has
no intention of resting contentedly until the Star and
Crescent is the pride of Utah Valley!
Rho-Nu (University of Texas – Tyler)
The Brothers joined alumni from the Lambda-Tau
Chapter of Baylor University at The Kyle Lake Foundation
golf tournament in Tyler, Texas, on May 7, 2012. This
partnership provided the opportunity to serve a fellow
Chapter within the North Texas District in order to help
raise over $43,000. Brother Jeffery Kyle Lake (Lambda-
Tau, Baylor, ’92), a 1994 graduate from Lambda-Tau,
Baylor University in Waco, Texas, was electrocuted on
October 30, 2005, as he stepped into baptismal waters
at University Baptist Church and reached out to adjust
a microphone. The Kyle Lake Foundation exists to assist
Christians and Christian churches to be better equipped
for making the presence and message of Christ both real
and meaningful in an ever-changing world, “…above all
else, one who walks in the light of God.”

Rho-Tau (Queens College)
The Brothers of Rho-Tau recently helped with the preparation
and execution of the 2nd largest display of The Aids Memorial
Quilt in the US.
Rho-Upsilon (University of The Incarnate Word)
The Rho-Upsilon hosted their first annual fundraising
golf tournament, The 1st Annual Kappa Sigma Golf Classic.
This was held at the Alamo Quarry Golf Course in San
Antonio, TX. The Alamo Quarry Golf Course is well known
for the quarry rock that was taken from this beautiful landscape
and used to build the state capital in Austin, TX. The
tournament was an 18 hole scramble that also consisted
of 4 holes that held longest drive prizes and closest to pin
prizes. With about 20 players, 5 of which were brothers of
the Rho-Upsilon Chapter, and a full team of brothers from
the Xi-Delta Chapter, University of Texas at San Antonio,
the turnout was a success. “This tournament turned out really
well, we collected about $2,500 and we all had a great
time.” said Brother Jacob M. Ramirez (’11), the Fundraising
Chairman of the Rho-Upsilon Chapter. Participants included
many sponsors such as the Delta Beta Chi Sorority Inc,
Delta Xi Nu Sorority Inc. and Brother Alejandro E. Flores’
House to celebrate the 142nd Founder’s Day.
This year for the 142nd Founder’s Day, the Theta-Eta
Chapter began a new tradition. The Chapter invited the
Chapters from around central Arkansas to come celebrate
this glorious day. These included Nu-Kappa (University of
Central Arkansas), Omicron-Gamma (Arkansas Tech University),
Omicron-Tau (University of Arkansas-Fort Smith), and
the Henderson State Colony, which is now the Sigma-Gamma
Chapter. The Chapters met at the Kappa Sigma Lodge at
the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and enjoyed a great
meal while discussing the recent and upcoming news each
Chapter had to share. Many brothers became great friends
after this night. The Theta-Eta Chapter expects this new
Theta-Iota (San Jose State University)
Theta-Iota Brothers give fellow Brother Matthew C. Ballard (’09)
a salute at his final NCAA basketball game.
The esteemed Brothers of the Theta-Iota Chapter gave a
loving salute to their fellow Brother as Matthew Ballard
stepped onto the basketball court for his final NCAA game.
It was Brother Ballard’s senior night, and his name
was called for his recognition like all of the other seniors.
However, Ballard found out that this night, he would not
be treated like the rest of his teammates. As his name was
called forty Kappa Sigma’s chanted, “Kappa Sigma!” then
“Matthew Ballard!” and twelve brothers tore off their
shirts revealing “MATT BALLARD!” spelled across their
chests. Matt did not notice what his brothers had done
until the athletic director pointed out the excited Kappa
Sigmas. After a short time of standing shocked, the six foot
eight inch Ballard began laughing and pointed at his brothers
who began again to shout in unison. This time, they
chanted, “Six foot eight!” with simultaneous clapping.
Afterwards, Matt Ballard told his fellow brothers, “All
I can say is you are the best bros ever! I love you guys!
AEKDB!” The Brothers of Theta-Iota did more than just
support a Brother that day, they gave him the night of his
college basketball career, and showed the SJSU community
what true brotherhood is.
Theta-Rho (McNeese State University)
Many great things are taking place for Theta-Rho.
The Brothers of Theta-Rho Chapter held an initiation of
twenty two new brothers in the fall semester. With these
new brothers, the Chapter is looking stronger all the time.
Theta-Rho dominated this year in IFC events and came
out on top once again winning the golden sledge hammer.
Theta-Rho participated in Battle for Breast Cancer and it
was a great success. The Chapter was involved once again
this year with Bowl for Kid’s Sake in March of 2012.
Theta-Theta (Western Kentucky University)
The Theta-Theta Chapter hosted its fifth Christmas
Week Pageant in the Downing University Center Audito-
60 The Caduceus of Kappa Sigma • Summer 2012
rium. The pageants’ entrance fee proceeds were donated
to Toys for Tots. The Chapter also donated valuable toys to
the Toys for Tots organization. The pageant which consisted
of 16 contestants involved three rounds in which
the contestants showed off their best outfits. In the first
round the woman showed off their sorority letters, in the
second round it was formal wear, and in the final round
the contestants showed off their holiday spirit.
Xi-Beta (Northeastern University)
Xi-Beta was proud to bring home Northeastern’s
Chapter of the Year for the 2011-2012 academic year.
This academic year the Chapter has completed over 6,500
community service hours and donated over $17,000 dollars
to charitable organizations. In February and March,
Brothers competed in the Run Up Boston Place, which
benefited the American Lung Association. On campus,
Xi-Beta was busy with its annual “Busting Ours to Save
Yours” philanthropy event. During the event that supported
the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG Foundation,
Brothers sold candy and nuts to raise awareness and
spread news about the Foundation.
In March, over 100 Kappa Sigma Brothers participated
in the Northeastern Relay for Life. Kappa Sigma, once
again, was a top team in terms of donations and the top
team in terms of participation. This spring the Chapter
hosted two events to benefit Kappa Sigma’s Military
Heroes Campaign. The first event featured an all-you-caneat
appetizer feast. The second event was a pizza eating
contest at Uno’s, which had participants from numerous
student organizations around Northeastern. All proceeds,
over $1,500 from both events went to the Military Heroes
Campaign to support the Fisher House Foundation.
Xi-Iota (Columbus State University)
The Brothers initiated a pledge class that epitomizes
the quality, and ideals of this beloved Fraternity. Philanthropy
chair, William P. Carson (’09), organized the 5th
annual Shave to Save event for breast cancer awareness.
Several of the brothers even went the extra distance to
dye their hair pink to spread further attention to this
cause. The Brothers were even mentioned in an article in
the Columbus Ledger, regarding this event. Overall the 5th
annual Shave to Save event had a great turn out.
Xi-Omega (Idaho State University)
Xi-Omega finished strong this spring semester
and had a spectacular last few months. The Chapter held
their 8th annual Easter Egg hunt for the local children and
had nearly 150 kids show up on the 8th of April. The fol-

Theta-Zeta (Eastern New Mexico University)
lowing week the men participated in a competitive Greek
week and had a blast. On April 20th Xi-Omega started
up yet another 24 hour bike-a-thon named Ride for the
Troops (R4T) event. During this 24 hour event the brothers
rode around the university’s quad, the event featured
several speakers, a raffle and BBQ. The Brothers reached
their goal of raising $2500 dollars. Xi-Omega is proud to
announce that the Chapter was the Greek week winner
for the third straight year in a row. The Chapter also had
their alumni retreat on the 28th and where brothers meet
the alumni brothers. This year is the largest graduating
class of Xi-Omega with 6 brothers who graduated.
Xi-Rho (Richard Stockton College of New Jersey)
The Xi-Rho Chapter recently held its annual Polar Bear
Plunge to Support Veterans. The event which raised over
$1,300 for the Military Heroes Campaign was held on one
of the colder days of winter. A large number of students
and friends ran into the cold ocean in Brigantine to support
the cause. “We jump into the ocean to show our gratitude
for everybody raising donations for the Military Heroes
Campaign,” said Sualeh Hafeez (’09), Grand Master of Xi-
Rho. In addition the event received coverage on NBC 40.
IS GOING DIGITAL!
Kappa Sigma is pleased to announce that the Winter and Spring editions of The Caduceus
will be delivered exclusively in digital online format via the World Wide Web. Seeking to
reach an optimal balance between digital and hard copies, the traditional print editions of
the magazine will be delivered for the Summer and Fall issues.
THE DIGITAL AGE IS HERE!
• From U.S. News & World Report, to PC Magazine, to
the University of Michigan’s alumni magazine, some of
the nation’s oldest and most heralded publications have
already gone to partial or all digital (paperless) editions.
• A survey of 1,152 newspaper and magazine journalists
conducted by PR Week in January 2008 found that
more than half anticipate a decline in print circulation
and an increased focus on their outlet’s Web site.
• Another survey, conducted that same year by Zogby
Interactive sites that nearly half of 1,979 respondents
(48%) said their primary source of news and information
is the Internet, an increase from 40% who said the same
a year earlier.
• A 2007 University Business study found that 57 percent
of college and university magazines and 79 percent of
newsletters have gone digital in some capacity.
