Wilhelm Bartelmann opened on October 7th 1 870 as the first “Korbmacher” (wicker-ware-maker) in 

Rostock, Germany. One day in the spring of 1 882, a certain Elfriede von Maltzahn went into his workshop in 

the Rostock "Lange Strasse". She asked for preparation of a "seating for the beach as protection from too 

much sun and wind", as she was suffering rheumatism. Nevertheless, she did not want to miss the stay on 

the beach, because the fresh sea air and stimulating climate is widely considered good for your well being. 

Bartelmann then made the first “Strandkorb” beach chair at the Baltic Sea from willow and cane - a singleseater. 

In 1 883, he produced a model for two. His wife, Elisabeth Bartelmann, founded the first “Strandkorb” 

rentals in the world in Warnemünde, Germany. 

Since Mr. Bartemann did not file a patent and demand steadily increased, “Strandkorb” were soon 

manufactured by other craftsmen. Thus arose models with footrests, armrests, sidetables and in 1 897 

Mr. Bartemann` s former apprentice Johann Falk invented a model with an adjustable backrest, a so called 

"semi-recliner". 

There are “Strandkorb” now in the North Sea and Baltic Sea areas which have different designs. 

Since the past 1 30 years, the "Strandkorb" is growing in popularity. It is no longer only seen on the beach. 

The "Strandkorb" can now be found sporadically around the world and now in Nova Scotia. Despite the 

increasing demand worldwide it is still braided manually. Perhaps this is the reason why one lingering in a 

“Strandkorb” quickly starts dreaming. After all, the "Strandkorb" is a symbol of summer, sun, beach and sea.

We present three lines with unique features: 

RUSTIC 250 is the basic starting model for a budget that everyone can afford. 

This model is limited in its sizes and features. 

The CLASSIC & CONSUL gives the most variety and selection with extras. 

It is the best value for your investment and the most popular and traditional look 

of a Strandkorb made in Germany. 

The DIPLOMAT features some special design ideas which make this Strandkorb 

a great choice. Wicker and fabric is more limited than in the classic line.

"RUSTIC 250" 



The RUSTIC 250 is our basic starting model which is a 

great choice if you are on a budget. 

This Strandkorb is build lighter and comes with 

thinner cushions than our other models. 

All the hardware is, made out of strong zinc plated 

steel. 

The two special models on the next page come with 

some standard extras like the foot and neck cushions. 

A custom built Strandkorb with your configurations is 

possible but has some limitations.

"DIPLOMAT" 



Our DIPLOMAT is a special edition offering a unique 

design and comes with lots of extras. 

Comfortable seat width in the XL format offers lots of 

space and has a 1 2 cm thick seat cushion. 

The wicker patter on the sides is an ornamental 

design and is always made out of two color choices of 

round wicker. 

Wood selection can be teak or mahogany with a 

natural finish. The footrest can be separated and 

stowed in the large storage drawer under the seat. 

All hardware is made of stainless steel with a metal 

banding at the bottom for extra protection. The 

backrest has a hidden spring mounted for easy 

handling and adjusts 3/4 of the way down. 

Duo fabrics for the seat can be selected in this model 

and airtex fabrics for the interior matching the seat 

pattern.

Colors will not fade and the material is 

UV resistant. Easy maintenance with the 

looks of the natural material.

All wood material used is properly dry and bonded with exterior 

glue. Nordic spruce is treated three times for outdoor protection. 

Mahogany-Meranti is primed and painted with a natural stain to 

get a smoother and silk-like finish. Our teak wood stays natural 

without a finish but will last forever. You can get the wooden parts 

painted to match you Strandkorb design. These outdoor paints will 

still show the wood grain and will allow the wood to breath.
