Hon. Dr Byron Reuben Hove
1986-1999
Hon. Byron Hove served as a member of the Standing Commission between 1986 and 1999,
serving as its Vice-Chairman from 1995 till 1999. Before joining the Standing Commission, Mr
Hove was the National Chairman of the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society and also one of its
founding members. Outside the Movement, he served as a Justice Minister in the Rhodesian
Government (later to become Zimbabwe with independence in 1980) along with Hilary
Squires as his Co-Minister. He also worked for the Organization of African Unity, the
precursor to the African Union and at the National Archives of Zimbabwe. He was educated
as a lawyer in the United Kingdom. He received the Henry Dunant medal in 1999. 96 Mr Hove
was born in 1940 in the Mberengwa District, Zimbabwe and died in on April 10 th 1999 in
Harare. 97
