MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF ATHLETICS
AT HARVARD WESTLAKE SCHOOL
February, 2016
Welcome to the Girls’ Basketball program at Harvard-Westlake.
The Wolverine Girls’ Basketball program has a long tradition of winning Mission League
championships and competing for CIF and State titles; winning eight league, four CIF and a state
championship since 1998. In addition, countless Wolverine athletes have gone on to play at the top
collegiate institutions in the country, making HW Girls’ Basketball one of the most productive
programs at the school.
Melissa Hearlihy, Head of the Girls’ Basketball Program, joined Harvard-Westlake at the start of the
2000-01 season, after playing collegiately at the University of San Francisco and being the head
coach at Alemany High School for 15 years. Her impact at HW was immediate, leading the
Wolverines to a CIF title in her first season. Since then, her teams have been perennial contenders
each season and have made a significant contribution to the HW athletic heritage.
This year Coach Hearlihy and the Girls’ Basketball team has achieved a first for a Harvard-Westlake
athletic team; being selected to compete in the CIF-SS Basketball Open Division. The Open Division
pitches the top 16 teams in Southern California against each other, in what could be argued, is the
toughest championship to win in the United States. To get to the Open Division Playoffs, the
Wolverines have played the toughest possible schedule, facing the very best teams in the area to
prepare for this opportunity.
Sustained success at the Varsity level can only be achieved by developing student-athletes from the
middle school through high school levels. Coach Hearlihy oversees our vertically integrated program
ensuring that our Middle and Upper school students are following a sequential program of ageappropriate
development.
The players and coaches are only part of the story when it comes to Wolverine Girls’ Basketball.
Special thanks go to the parents, support staff and administrators that log countless hours in service
to our school.
Thank you for your support of Wolverine athletics. I look forward to seeing you throughout the
season.
Go Wolverines!
Terry Barnum

HARVARD-WESTLAKE
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
It is the mission of the Strength and
Conditioning Department to encourage each
student athlete to strive for excellence.
Our primary objectives are to teach the proper
fundamentals of strength and conditioning,
improve athletic performance, and reduce the
risk of injury.
Our sport-specific training components include
ground, based movements, multi-joint
movements, three dimensional movements,
explosive training, progressive overload, pillar
stability, flexibility and recovery, energy
system development, linear speed
development and lateral speed and agility
development.
- Department Chair, Greg Bishop

HARVARD-WESTLAKE SPORTS MEDICINE
The Harvard-Westlake School Sports Medicine
Program provides injury prevention, care and
treatment services to the school’s student-athletes.
The Sports Medicine Program strives to establish
itself as a model of excellence in sports medicine
care.
Our services are categorized into the following
areas: injury prevention (taping, bracing, padding,
orthotic construction), management of athletic
injuries (first aid, evaluation, referral, contest
coverage) and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. We
educate student-athletes about athletic injuries so
they are empowered to lead healthier, injury-free
lives. We use the best technology available for the
prevention and treatment of athletic injuries and
upgrade equipment and supplies whenever
necessary.
There are four main goals of the Sports Medicine
Program:
‐ Provide efficient and timely care to our
student-athletes.
‐ Encourage an atmosphere that values health
and wellness.
‐ Enable injured student-athletes to safely
return to competition as soon as possible.
‐ Reduce the risk of athletic injury for our
student-athletes.
We work closely with the strength and conditioning
program, the coaches, the athletic support staff,
school administration, physicians and other
healthcare providers to provide the best possible
healing environment for our student-athletes.
HEAD OF HARVARD-WESTLAKE
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PROGRAM
Melissa Hearlihy is Harvard-Westlake’s
Head of Program for Girls’ Basketball.
In this role, she oversees the Wolverine
teams in the middle and upper schools
and teaches Physical Education.
MELISSA HEARLIHY
HEAD OF PROGRAM GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
“It continues to be an honor and a privilege to be
the Program Head for Girls’ Basketball at
Harvard-Westlake School, an institution united by
the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.
Our record and strength of schedule has landed us
in the prestigious CIF-SS Open Division. This is a
tribute to the girls’ efforts and determination.
Playoffs are the most exciting part of the season.
We spent the last nine months preparing ourselves
to get to this point. Starting with an excellent
strength and conditioning program coupled with
our overall game schedule which included a
national level tournament in Texas, we played
arguably the toughest league schedule in
California. Playing six open division teams during
the regular season certainly makes us battle tested.
The goal moving forward is to take on each new
challenge with confidence and excitement as we
are now part of a very elite group. Our experience
and effort will be the driving force for our
continued success. I am extremely proud of these
young ladies as they will always be known as the
first Harvard-Westlake team to reach the Open
Division.”
Hearlihy started her coaching career after
playing for the University of San
Francisco. After graduating USF she
became an assistant coach at Alemany
High School and within a year became
head coach at the age of 23. In 15 years
at Alemany she won three CIF Southern
Section championships.
Joining Harvard-Westlake in 2000 she
has continued her winning ways with the
Wolverines. Hearlihy has led her Harvard-
Westlake teams to 6 Mission League
titles, three CIF championships in 2001,
2009 and 2010 and the 2010 California
State Division IV Basketball
Championship.
In 2010 Hearlihy was named the CIF
Division IV and ESPN RISE State Coach
of The Year and in 2011, she was named
the Daily News Coach of the Year.
In close to 30 years of coaching Hearlihy
has won close to 600 games, putting her
in the top 10 of all-time career wins in the
Cal-Hi Sports State Record Book &
Almanac.
Go Wolverines!!!!!
