Within our diocese, Catholic Charities of West Tennessee

report and a great response to the call of our Holy Father. I invite you to read

Annual Reports traditionally look backwards, and while 

ours is no different in that regard, this year we also want 

to take a peek forward too. A Mission of Service... A 

Better Tomorrow is not just a theme, but indeed, our 

marching orders. 

Throughout these pages you’ll see the names and faces of 

the people - staff, volunteers and donors who make the daily 

work of Catholic Charities of West Tennessee possible. You’ll see 

much of what we have done as well as what we are planning. 

There is a role for you and your family at Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, and 

it can be as small or as large as you want it to be. A one-time visit to drop off no 

longer needed clothing, a weekly promise to deliver food boxes to hungry senior 

citizens or volunteering to help a low income neighbor prepare their income tax 

return are just three of many opportunities we offer. 

Finally, by the time of next year’s annual report, Bishop Terry Steib will likely be 

happily retired with a new Bishop in place for West Tennessee. For over twenty 

years Bishop Terry has been a blessing to our diocese in so many respects – but 

none more so than in his commitment to the poor and disadvantaged whom we 

serve at CCWTN. We will miss his guidance, encouragement and accessibility and 

wish him a long, happy retirement!

Emergency services are for those most in need – In an area where almost 

half of the children live in poverty we count on all our partners to help 

us in our mission. This past year we started a “Lobby Library” and our 

volunteers hosted a health fair at a parish with a large Hispanic 

population. We also began a partnership with eight other area 

entities called No Hungry Senior - a multi-million dollar 

grant program to feed frail elderly. In addition, our 

programs provided food for children at Camp Love 

& Learn, seniors in area hi-rises, the working poor 

at our large scale community food distributions 

as well as the folks in our headquarters’ 

neighborhood. Our clothing programs dressed 

more than 12,000 persons and we shared our 

abundance with other agencies. Gifts For God’s 

Children touched more than 4,200 elderly and 

little ones at Christmas too.

St. Sebastian Veteran Services, the newest program of 

Catholic Charities of West Tennessee launched on October 

1, 2013. Our program is primarily funded by a grant from 

the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and focuses on 

homeless and at imminent risk of homelessness Veterans 

and their families who reside in Shelby County, TN. 

Our program is highly collaborative with other local 

resources and includes a vigorous outreach approach 

to end homelessness among veterans & families with a 

goal to keep Veterans & families living permanently & 

independently in their own homes.

We will continue working with other local providers on “Coordinated Entry” procedures to provide more 

effective services to the homeless and those at imminent risk of homelessness, by allowing a client to access 

our services from multiple locations.

Educating immigrants in West Tennessee of the processes and avenues legally 

available to them or their family members, brings dignity and hope. Joining 

together with the other immigration non-profit agencies in our area, more 

immigrants know and are taking advantage of Naturalization and Deferred Action 

for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) processes. 

Oumu doesn’t make much money; she speaks broken English but is a very 

independent and smart lady. We found she qualified for a fee waiver and 

exemption to complete the naturalization process. She studied the civic and 

geography materials and presented herself with confidence for her interview. 

In September 2015, she naturalized, becoming a United States citizen. She 

is making sure her children complete their processes too; if Mom can do it, 

they can do it! 

Volunteers are needed to tutor immigrants like Oumu; it is very gratifying 

to watch new citizens take their Oath of Allegiance to the United States at 

a Citizenship Naturalization Ceremony.

According to “Mr. Smith”, he had everything to live for. Life was good. 

He had a successful 30 year custom furniture building business, had 

been happily married for 35 years and lived in a “big little town” as a self 

-described middle class citizen. His life took a terrible turn in early 2015 

when his father and mother (whom he was very close to) died within 2 

months of each other. To numb the pain of this loss and his desire to join 

them, Mr. Smith went on a month and a half drinking binge, began sleeping 

in his 16,000 square foot warehouse and became homeless after he was 

hospitalized for two months. 

“If I had not been admitted to Genesis House, I hate to think about 

where I would be now. I probably would be dead. Genesis House 

has given me an opportunity to get back on my feet and to be 

independent. I have gained self- awareness, understanding and a 

chance for me to get a good look at myself. Not long ago, I tithed 

one tenth of my earnings from one of my jobs and bought the 

contents of an 18 wheeler that I donated to the local food bank. 

Never would I have imagined that I would be residing in a program 

that is the recipient of the food bank or that I would acquire a job 

working at the food bank as well. I know now that God is not just an idea. 

He is a reality”.

We will evolve into a new (Rapid Rehousing) model of housing assistance for homeless populations that 

suffer with chronic mental illnesses and /or co-occurring disorders.

Camp Love and Learn serves a multi-cultural group of Kindergarten through 

Fifth Grade children focusing on Academic Enrichment, Nutrition and Fun... 

all in a safe, secure environment. 

Without intervention, all children typically regress during the summer 

months in terms of what they have learned during the previous school year. 

This is disproportionately worse for children in lower income families. Camp 

Love and Learn offers a unique, eight week summer experience for children 

at risk of falling behind in basic skills, primarily Reading and Mathematics. 

In 2015 Camp Love and Learn returned to St Paul School in Whitehaven... 

and expanded service to the Raleigh area, locating at The Church of the 

Ascension. Camp Love and Learn provided service to approximately 200 

children of the working poor.

Camp Love and Learn will return to St. Paul’s while also hosting a new camp at St. Michael’s in the Berclair 

neighborhood. We will increase our focus on pre and post testing to better understand the academic outcomes 

we are delivering to campers and their parents.

Articulates the mission of Catholic Charities 

by merging Scripture and the Catholic Faith 

tradition into meaningful and practical 

activities. This is a fancy way of saying that it 

acts as fertilizer and glue. As fertilizer, it grows 

ministries and programs by developing parish 

and community networks, mentoring leaders, offering learning opportunities, providing human capital and other 

resources. As the glue it helps us to adhere to the spirit of our mission of living the Gospel. Learning opportunities 

include: Catholic Social Teaching, JustFaith, Bridges out of Poverty, Transition To Success, Adult Learning and 

Leadership Development.

Develop a resource that catalogs and connects the care and concern ministries of all parishes and entities in our 

diocese. Goal here is to provide a way for ministries in various locations to “talk to each other’ and to prevent 

duplication of services. 

Social Enterprises 

At Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, social enterprises are small 

business start-ups with both social and commercial goals. Our 

clients are paid a fair wage, taught valuable job skills, work on 

interpersonal skills, and build a demonstrated work history that 

can hopefully allow them to transition into external employment. 

Our Camp Love & Learn Notecards and St. Bernard’s TM line of dog 

biscuits, bandanas, and bowties are sold in various marketplaces 

with all proceeds reinvested back into our Genesis House, Camp 

Love & Learn, and Bouquets of Hope programs. St. Bernard’s Biscuits 

are all natural dog treats that are baked and packaged by residents 

of Genesis House. St. Bernard’s Bandanas and Bowties are made 

by clients of our agency. Camp Love & Learn Notecards are blank 

notecards featuring original artwork from children of our Camp Love 

& Learn summer enrichment camp.

Volunteerism 

Volunteers make our programs work. Because of them, we serve more people 

and we do so very efficiently with little dollar expense. We count on volunteers to 

multiply the value of our donors’ gifts. And they always come through, whether 

we need a huge number for a one time project or a few who are willing to show 

up weekly for an ongoing project. They also show up wherever we go, whether 

we are in the Jackson Deanery or at all ends of Shelby County.

Through our ministry Bouquets of Hope, volunteers and hard-to-employ 

clients breathe new life into gently used floral masterpieces by repurposing 

them into smaller, smile inducing bouquets that are then delivered to patients 

in hospitals, hospices and nursing homes throughout the Memphis area. The 

ministry also serves as a job training tool for our clients. Through part time job 

opportunities, clients from Genesis House, Immigration Services, and St. Sebastian Veteran 

Services have the opportunity to work with some of the top floral designers in the 

Memphis area while learning job skills that lead to full time employment. Bouquets of 

Hope has provided a priceless amount of media exposure to the work of our agency and 

has greatly increased public awareness of Catholic Charities as a whole.
